I want to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Hereford Arms for being so gracious and accommodating to us on Monday 19 of August. My mother recently had open heart surgery. She wanted to visit London as part of her "bucket list". I knew I had to take her to Hereford Arms at least once. I made an ambitious reservation time for a mere 3 hours after we landed at Heathrow. Visited from the U.S. A local friend brought us here. Loved it. Good atmosphere & location. Our waitress offered us a few beer tastes so we could decide our drinks. The steak was delicious. Kids menu was good and service was good. And I had one of the best desserts I've ever had anywhere; it was the Vintage Ale sticky toffee pudding, toffee sauce, Fuller's buffalo milk salted caramel ice cream. You must try it! If you are looking for a reasonable enjoyable delicious dinner this is the place! On a quick 3 day trip to London I ate here TWICE!! The atmosphere was so positive and the inside was very cozy. Our server for both nights was so kind. He made our experience wonderful. I ordered the cottage pie both nights for the reason that is was TO DIE FOR. Seriously. It was so fantastic. I've eaten here a few times over the last two years and I always enjoy this place. The prices are reasonable and the drinks are nice and cold. I have been there when the service was a little spotty but never bad. The staff was quick to get our orders placed and the food was oh so good. I usually get the fish and chips here and I wasn't disappointed (ever). This was also where we got our first taste of having to order everything at the bar. Don't expect table service all of the time. Aside from the local beer, they have my favorite, Stella Artois. My wife and son had the cider and enjoyed it. This is such good pub food, we'd take the Tube from across London to eat here. I was staying at Bailey's a block away so the walk was quick. It's also a block from the Tube. This pub is old, it is the alleged hangout of Jack the RIpper, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (they are both long dead in case you didn't know). read more

Mrs. M and I spent a few days in London a before heading to Scotland. Wanting to try a local pub we found our way to Hereford Arms. We were rewarded with a great experience, good food and friendly service. It was Fish & Chips for me and I could not have been happier, a giant filet that was close to more than I could eat and chips that were good too. Mrs. M tried the local Cheeseburger with Gouda and she said it was great. It must have been too as she said she had no desire to share! The staff was helpful to us as visiting Americans and kept a friendly banter going throughout the meal. I would definitely recommend Hereford Arms! read more

One of my favorite pubs/gastro pubs in London (technically Kensington)! Great music, food, atmosphere! Always check the black board for specials for appetizers and mains. First time in a proper London pub. Pleasant service, but a touch crowded. Food is decent - was jetlagged and still stuffed from lunch, so unfortunately couldn't finish my gnocchi gratin, but it was well done. Asians, beware - portions are really huge. Two people with average appetites should be able to confortably share an average portion. Of course, what really matters is what's behind the bar. A selection of cask and draught beer, largely dominated by Fullers beers, London Pride, ESB, honeydew etc. Pretenders should be satisfied with nonsense macros like Amstel and Kronenbourg. Ciders from Cornish Orchards should satisfy the sweet toothed. Enjoyed the atmosphere - loud but not overwhelming. And wasn't made to feel out of place despite very obviously being a foreigner. We visited recently on the recommendation of a traveling friend who'd been here in the past, and we found it to be an absolutely wonderful neighborhood pub filled with many locals and tourists alike. Lots of great local beers on draught, as well - including Fuller's London Pride, which the bartender recommended when we asked to try a "local favorite." And absolutely WONDERFUL traditional pub food, very well-prepared and served in more-than-ample portions - we really enjoyed our beer-battered fish & chips with a side of fresh mashy peas, and we also heard rave reviews about the "Sunday Roast" dinner served on Sunday afternoons. Insider tip - if you want to ensure that you get a seat for dinner, be sure to book a reservation in advance. We got lucky and found open spots at the bar, but the staff indicated that they often fill dinner reservations a day or two ahead of time. Oh memories... This was our local hangout while I studied abroad. What a classy pub. Great food and reasonable beers in an otherwise high end location. This pub was a few yards from the apartment I rented so I stopped by multiple times over my week in London. Each time I found the place was lively and the service was friendly. It's a bit of a cliché pub but the food is solid and overall it's just a welcome atmosphere. The beer selection could be better (it's a Fuller's bar) but they did end up having a couple of outside selections to keep things interesting. Came here on a Wednesday night (just before closing time) and was surprised to find it packed. My husband and I were immediately greeted and found a seat. I had the rack of lamb (which was delicious) and my husband had fish and chips - which were slightly better than some of the other pubs we had tried. The server was very sweet, although she did forget to bring me my salad and it took a while to get her attention to ask for the check. I was also surprised to find my beer (London Pride) was served at room temperature, which was kind of gross. I don't know if that's a British thing? This is a cozy upscale British pub, and one that satisfied deeply as an American come to enjoy drinking culture on the right side of the pond. It has character, like an old living room, with a smattering of nooks and crannies to chat in. It was fairly crowded with locals, who come to sling a few pints after work or to eat out during the week. The fish and chips was good, the batter a touch on the heavy side, but a large portion and fresh. It's a Fullers place, with the full list of beers by them. I prefer the Bengal Lancer and London Pride, and the Honeydew is nice and light if you want something more refreshing. They also have Staropramen, Guinness, Stella Artois on draft and have a list of about a half dozen coffees spiked with a wee dram. The bar staff is friendly and helpful too... and recommended visiting the Fullers brewery nearby. But my favorite part is that it has history here, with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle possibly being a frequent customer during his dribbles about 221 B Baker St. In my opinion, the best pub in the area, especially near Gloucester station. read more

As seen in reviews the number of nearby hotels has tourists discovering this place. But! I think it's fair to say they come in after walking past the glossy branded up chain-looking restaurants on Gloucester Rd in search of a proper English establishment. Note to tourists: be cool. (Fact: I am a tourist) this is a special place, the service is very friendly, it is incredibly well kept inside, the menu is outstanding and the atmosphere is homey, cozy and warm. Apparently beer was served room temperature which some of the American company I was with found strange and "gross," but oh, you know... Americans. ;) We had to seat ourselves (not sure if this is the norm though?), and you have to order at the bar. Warm, cosy atmosphere with very dim lighting. Uncomfortable chairs and somewhat kitschy decor. Great place to hang out with friends. I'd love to come back with a less... obvious crowd. read more

I live 300 meters away and my other local is the Stanhope Arms which is a total piece of shit pub so I tend to come here. The staff are mostly great, and it feels a bit like a livingroom in a middle-class British household (the flatscreen TV has a gold frame). It's very much a chain pub, and the food doesn't look at that great (it's certainly made in a commissary and reheated), but it's got a chill vibe and the outdoor area overlooks a nice square and they've got those red lightbulb heaters which I think are cool. Once, this sort of deaf gay dude was there and was really hammered and he got kicked out but he did all these hilarious dance moves (not ironically) and sang Kylie Minogue (not to be a dick, but he is deaf so he wasn't really in tune but it was hilarious) and kept hugging strangers and pretending he was a rich local and said these hilarious things to passersby. This is a completely dumb anecdote that has no bearing on the pub at all, but I was just there and am sort of drunk so eat it. They do really nice Fullers ales, and take care to keep the lines nice and clean -- their Bengal Lancer is currently on special and I really like it and the possibly German manager chick. All right, not too special. We were here for vacation, staying around the corner, and the husband wanted fish and chips. We stopped in of an evening. It was awkwardly laid out, the staff wasn't friendly, and it was WAY too brightly lit. The decor was on the kitsch side of historical, but that's a plus for me. The food was good (his fish n' chips, my roast with yorkshire pudding) but we were never given an opportunity to order a drink once the food order was in. In addition, we had the table near the waitress station, and the floor gave and swayed every time they walked past. Very uncomfortable. Definitely better than the Bell and Compass near Trafalgar, but not nearly as good as its South Kensington neighbor, The Drayton Arms. read more

I absolutely loved this place. The charm and character of this little pub are to die for. Heading back to the hotel I wanted to grab a quick bite to eat and opted for a classic, Fish and Chips. The fish was cooked to perfection, the chips were just the right size and crispy and the peas were extra mushy, just the way I like them. Not to mention, the food was extremely reasonably priced for the location. During my 3 days in London not only did I stop in once, but twice. The second day just grabbed a few drinks and sat outside. I believe they must have changed the chef since pre lockdown when I had well prepared , well cooked, fresh food, BUT today crab starter of brown crab arancini while nicely presented was deep fried and content had next to no taste of crab and main course of battered haddock and chips had been so deep fried and overcooked it was more about the batter than the fish and the potato chips... not great at all ! Fantastic first meal in London! Luckily arrived on a Sunday for "Sunday Roast" and had the roast beef. The beef was "choice" in quality, at best, (how beef is rated in the US, being lower quality) but the accoutrements were excellent. Cheesy cauliflower, mixed greens, and hmmm, the Yorkshire pudding. Loved it all! I would have gone 4 stars for the food, but the friendliness and beer selection definitely got the 5th star. Had an IPA from a local brewery that is only found here. Certainly recommend this pub for food, and beer, and the friendly service. Also, they have a huge gin selection, which apparently is all the craze in London right now. read more

Just got into town and had our first dinner here. Although we didn't have a booking, they were kind enough to work us in right away. The meal was wonderful: Scotch egg, fish & chips, braised beef special with mash, washed down with a Fuller's ESB. We weren't planning on a dessert, but the chocolate sponge with Fuller's coffee ice cream was spectacular. And all of the staff were absolutely lovely. Great pub! read more
