This auction house is ok for its marketing. However I found it's not up to the standard with its asian arts offering. I recently purchased a longquan celadon censer; and was stated as Ming dynasty. Upon close inspections at arrival, the censer is actually a recent copy. Heritage stated no liabilities with any errors. However I do believe their service for identifying asian artifacts are subpar. I have been buying from Heritage for many years , on there website and in person. I am a small coin and currency dealer but do have a large collection for notes and coins as well . The last time I bid on an item and won , they charger me 20 % which is there going rate for winning purchases , but now charge 2 1/2 % for credit card charges as well . I feel that the 20% is more then sufficient to charge. It's not the money as much as the principal of nickel and dining you to death. read more

I have been dealing with Heritage SPORTS auctions for near a decade now. I have bought and sold baseball items from 100.00-10,000.00. As a consignor I use Peter Calderon and Derek Grady. They have provided me outstanding service to address any needs I have like advances or reserves. A few months ago I wanted to clear up some wall space, so they sent Nick Cepero out to my house to collect my artwork. He was very polite and we took care of business in less than 2 hours. Onething I really like about Heritage is that they cross over many new bidders from their other auctions which gives them the largest customer data base in the sports hobby I feel. As a bidder, I can't wait to see amazing items that they seem to come up with every auction. Their writeups are always detailed and the pictures are very clear so you know what you are bidding on. No matter what decade I'm collecting, I know Heritage will have something there that I want. Heritage is now the 500lb gorilla in the Sports auction industry. Even they they are still known for their Coins, currency and Art auctions, it won't be long until their Sports side becomes number one in the company. One little secret about Heritage which many don't know is.... They have a very easy to use auction history search. You can pull up items from auctions over a decade ago and "Make an Offer" to whoever won it back then. Its anonymous where the buyer and seller do not know each other and Heritage is the middleman facilitating the sale. Being a collector for my entire life and dealing with over 50 auction houses, I have to rate Heritage Sports with 5 stars as they deserve it. I was looking for a particular Old Master etching and found it being offered at Heritage so I decided to bid on it, knowing that it would be expensive. There are no bargains for Rembrandt etchings; they are popular, and the very early ones, not the 19th Century or 20th Century prints, run into the thousands of dollars. And I thought naively that bidding out-of-state with delivery out-of-state, it would be worth the expense. If you want something badly enough, you have to pay. What i did not expect was to have to pay a sales tax where the company has not an office in my home state; I do not pay the sales tax at other auction houses out of state unless they have an office here, which Heritage does not. But I paid it. The item I purchased was an etching, about 3 7/8 by 3 6/8 inches. It cost $90 + to ship it ground and with the sales tax, the added cost was over another $640. I'm "old school" and find fees and some taxes a bit much, especially when I do not expect to pay more than what is appropriate. Maine Antique Digest has had a number of articles about fees and premiums; it is an issue which many collectors find troublesome. I am going on 83 and while I like to buy an art work now and then, I would hate to think what a framed painting might cost to ship. The service was fine; the process was easy; the results were satisfactory, but I will think more carefully about bidding next time. read more

I have purchase two items from Heritage Auctions. The first was an 1896 presentation jar with sterling engraved lid. Absolutely lovely. It took about a month to arrive after the auction, but the packaging was so secure it took me a half an hour to completely unpack. There was no chance of this item breaking or being damaged in transit. Really great! Most recently, I participated in a Friday night live auction and purchased a beautiful ring. I didn't entirely understand how the auction worked, but I had bid on line prior and then signed on at the time of the auction and was able to figure it out. I am waiting for the appraisal on my purchased item, and will update this review after, but for now I am very happy with the purchase and the price. The shipping on the ring was faster my first purchase. I purchased it on 1/9/21 and it arrived at my home on 1/19/21. I will look forward to purchasing more from Heritage in the future. read more

I've bid on thousands of items and won a few. My experience with their coins auctions is that they are a bit pricey but worth it to a collector. However, I bid on some personal ceramics from a former astronaut and the items were poorly packed, damaged in shipping, and the problem never resolved. NOT happy about that. Horrible customer service. I have won thousands of dollars worth of junk in their auctions. Two incidents come to mind. I win some original art and paid right away. Several weeks later, the artwork has not been delivered. I call them up and they automatically blame for me for not giving them the right mailing address. I had provided the correct mailing address the first time. The item still does not show up. Much later, I see them at San Diego Comic Con, I ask them where is my item that I paid for weeks ago. They again blame me and say that I provided the wrong mailing address. I ask them to check the status of my item. I come back the next day and they tell me that they sent my item to somebody else. No apologies from Heritage. They are a bunch of empty suits. I ask them a question about their items in their Sunday Internet Comics Auction #121416 ending Sunday April 20, 2014, I asked the question on Monday and today and have yet to receive an answer. Additionally, they raise their buyer's premium to 20%. With California Sales Tax, that is an additional 31% plus to the winning bid. read more

I purchased a framed engineering drawing of Edison's light bulb filament in an online auction conducted by Heritage. When the item arrived, the glass was broken. I contacted Heritage to ask for financial support in covering the cost of the broken glass, which I was happy to arrange to be done locally. Their response was that I would have to send it back. This would have required re-packaging by me, insurance, and waiting for glass replacement while I was still out the cost of the item. Why I couldn't just take a picture, send it to them, and get it done locally (at lower total cost, given full extra round trip shipping and insurance both ways) was beyond me. Rather than hassle with it, I just went and got it done locally at my own expense. Disappointing given that there was such a simple solution. ________________ Update: Heritage contacted me and arranged for payment of the out of pocket cost for fixing the broken glass. I would have loved for this to be handled correctly the first time, but kudos to them for a quick and helpful response. read more

I have worked with Heritage Auctions as a buyer for over a decade purchasing photographs and movie posters . I have to say that it is efficient having in house shipping because it takes the sting out of dealing with third parties who rarely charge a fair and reasonable price. That being said, on items that I have purchased for $1 -$100 to be charge $19 as a surcharge is excessive. I realize its about a person's time but i would rather pay 25% than have to pay a standardized fee. If that's the case, the lots should not be individual titles but packaged with another. To buy something for $15 and pay $34 plus tax and shipping . That one item can cost $60 . It's times like the adage of "buy what you want, don't buy it because it maybe a deal". A deal is $15 -25 not $60 unless you really want the item read more

I'm in the final stages of auctioning off my comic book collection through Heritage. I had sold some comics through them before about 10 years ago and shipped everything to Dallas myself that time. But this time I had 17 long boxes to ship and got the idea to contact their Beverly Hills office, which I could drive to. I contacted Ed Jaster, who couldn't have been more accommodating. It was a simple matter of me making a master inventory list and then bringing the books to their BH office at a scheduled time. From there it was easy. They shipped the books to Dallas and charged me about half of what it would have cost me to ship on my own (without the hassle of packaging and going to the post office myself). Then for the auctions, they separated the collection into groups by title and similar grades. The common ones were sold in bigger lots but they ID'd all the right comics to auction individually, sometimes sending them to the CGC for slabbing (sparing me another hassle and more shipping expenses). I've been collecting a long time and I agreed with the grades Heritage gave the unslabbed books about 90% of the time, with the 10% difference sometimes being lower or higher than my grade, so it basically evened out in the end anyway. Having sold comics on eBay in the past, I can tell you this is a MUCH better way to go. Not only will you almost always get a higher price for your books (and I'm factoring in ALL consignment fees here) but you don't have to deal with packaging and shipping on top of then sometimes dealing with an unhappy (or shady) buyer yourself. Or a deadbeat who wins your auction but never pays. Heritage gets to handle all of that! As far as I'm concerned, that is a fantastic deal and more than worth any fees they charge. The fees are 5% commission (for you, the seller) of CGC graded books (plus the cost the CGC charges to grade). And 15% for "ungraded" books (which Heritage staffers grade). But the upside here is that they are trusted graders so non-CGC books will sell for much more through Heritage than any you would grade yourself and put on eBay, simply because buyers have more confidence in Heritage's grading accuracy. On top of the seller's commission, they charge a buyer's premium, which is solely on the buyer. That adds 19.5% commission to the price of a winning bid for the buyer and yes, it eats into your profit as a seller, but so many of my key books sold for way above Overstreet, I didn't care. Be aware that common books sold in large lots will usually sell for about 1/3rd to 1/2 of Overstreet value. But you won't get more on eBay anyway (or anywhere else - try selling your books at a comic book store and see what they offer). On the flipside, I sold one rare horror book that listed for about $60 on Overstreet for over $800 and that was AFTER buyer's premium and my 15% commission were taken out. You never know which book might be a hot property and Heritage gives you maximum exposure to the largest buyers pool out there. My ONLY knock on Heritage is that sometimes there's a lag in communication. At the start of my most recent experience, there were a few emails that weren't answered for many weeks. But since then, they've answered every concern quickly. I had this issue with them 10 years ago when I auctioned a bunch of books as well. Hopefully they'll keep improving in this area, but if they don't get back to you right away my advice is, be polite but persistent. If you don't get an answer from one person, then email the main contact on their home page also and you'll get an answer. It was hard to part with the core of my comic collection that I started accumulating almost 50 years ago, but I'm glad I went through Heritage. They made what at first seemed like a daunting if not impossible task relatively easy and they got me top dollar for my books, no question. It's also fun to watch your auctions go live on Sunday night. I thank Ed Jaster, Lon Allen and the rest of the Heritage staff for their time and their thoroughness and professionalism. read more

Let me sum my experience of dealing with Heritage Auctions, I have never had a bad enough experience with any business to compel me to write a bad review. It has nice wrapper on the outside but when it comes down to the most important part on their end of getting the goods to the seller they are horrible. The website is nice, the people in customer service answering the phone were nice, and they will tell you your item will ship "in 7 to 10 days after payment" even when you are writing them on the 21st day after payment. I did purchase an item around Thanksgiving and understand that it must be busy around that time, but that is no excuse to have the "It will ship when we get to it" attitude. The "it will happen when I get to it" attitude doesn't work at my job, I doubt if it even works at anyone who is reading this job. It took 25 days for my item to deliver and that was after exhausting more of my time than I feel necessary, and if I'm lucky I'll receive my wife's Christmas present and won't have to put a picture I of what I got her in a box. So, before you buy make sure to read other reviews around the web, I am not the only person who has had these experiences. One review I read summed it up pretty nicely. As a seller they expect prompt payment, and as buyer make sure they hold their end of the deal and promptly ship your item even if it means calling them daily. I also think that any reasonable seller would ship an item other than ground when they have made a mistake as a courtesy. I understand that ground is what I paid for, but I also paid to have my item ship in the 7-14 business days stated. So if you are in the Houston area looking for comic related collectibles, I recommend you do not buy from here and support you local comic book store instead like I should have. read more

I only collect CGC comic books. I have bought these items from Heritage Auctions since 2001. I never had a problem getting exactly what I'd won. I remember once suspecting the house of shill-bidding several years ago (and I'm still not sure that wasn't an issue at the time), but have since not had any such inclinations. My orders have arrived intact, although (understandably) a bit slow lately. Yeah there is this 25% buyer's fee, but it doesn't matter, just do the math and bid accordingly. read more
