Upon arriving it was clear this is not what I was expecting. The pool is very small and located right next to the parking lot. Big enough to accommodate a family maybe two. Cottages are small, but we knew that. A very dog friendly place, but our cottage smelled like it as well. Strong urine oder throughout. The actual harbor is off the Illinois River and like most Illinois rivers the water is muddy and not the cleanest. This planned community felt like it had failed at the concept it tried to capture. The homes and cabins are all small and really overpriced. The feel of them inside is very cheap. For me this just isn't a place I would ever go again, but perhaps others feel different. read more

This is a nice property as a whole, even in the off season. There is a property designed for everyone and size family, from the one bedroom to the multiple room homes. Nice appliances and convenient parking right in front. There is a choice of harbor side or river side. read more

My experience here was brief but being a former Ottawa resident, just seeing the site of Heritage Harbor really shocked me. Hidden south of IL-71 and Rt 6, this harbor & resort is a good secret. We learned of its existence from friends who dock their boat at the marina. The area is very nice with new housing, a state of the art marina, swimming pool, restaurant, rentals, entertainment, etc. I'm not aware of another marina & resort in the area that's quite as nice. Truly an asset to Ottawa! read more

Heritage Harbor Marina Resort is a wonderful Escape for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. It is close for people living in Chicago and the suburbs. Stage 1 of the development was just completed and now they are starting on Stage 2. The Cottage owners are super friendly and very welcoming to guests. The staff is amazing. It is a quaint property along the Illinois River with a great restaurant overlooking the marina. You can always enjoy a great meal and a cold beverage at the Red Dog Grill. Starved Rock State Park is just a 10-minute drive away and you can go for a beautiful hike. The town of Ottawa is charming and filled with delicious restaurants, boutiques, a movie theater and a beautiful Park. read more

My husband and I spent a few days in this historic area. Our base was Heritage Harbor in "Peaceful River Nights" cottage. The house was adorable. Just enough for the 2 of us with a loft for extra lodgers if necessary. We enjoyed the screened in porch and also spent quite a bit of time sitting along the river. The development is still in the beginning phases so there is still construction going on but nothing unbearable. There is a pool, playground, marina, and even a restaurant. Unfortunately the hours on the restaurant info stated they closed at 4 so we missed out on the restaurant. (It looked like it might have been open later.) read more

If I could give Heritage Harbor less stars, I would. First off, the customer service is awful. I brought my family of 8 here, because I was interested in retiring here. I would not recommend this area to anyone for vacationing or residing. The river itself is very dirty and small. The scenery is industrial and doesn't provide nice views at all. I would not recommend renting a boat from the services here because they will change you for any and everything that they can, no matter how careful or safe you are. If you're looking for a fun, scenic getaway for your family then this is not the place to come to. There are enough nice places nearby the Chicagoland area-(Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan) that are more reasonable and enjoyable to spend your hard earned dollars on. read more

The service I received at this place was despicable! When I arrived at the Welcome Center to check in, I was sent to the house I had reserved. Upon arrival at the house and trying to open the lockbox, I noticed that there were people inside, so I knocked instead. The man told me that he and his family were staying there. Afterwards, I proceeded back to the Welcome Center and informed the staff of what had occurred. They claimed that they had my reservation booked for the following Monday after the weekend I had originally booked, which was a total lie! If this was the case, why did they send me over to the house? I believe they gave the house I rented to someone else. They offered me a smaller house and because I had driven there and prepared to stay there, I accepted. They charged me the same price I paid for the larger house as the smaller house. The house had only 1 bedroom and a loft/attic with two twin beds that required climbing a narrow spiral staircase that seemed to be made only for a small child to fit on. The room was set up for kids to sleep in. I had my 2 adult kids with me. My son is disabled and has to travel by wheelchair, and he requires sleeping in a queen size bed and they expected this house to accommodate our needs. I had to sleep in the loft/attic and my daughter had to sleep on the couch. They never apologized for the inconvenience. I believe they gave my reservation away because the house I reserved was supposed to accommodate 10 people and it was only 3 of us staying. Since I paid for the larger house, I should've been given it regardless of how many people were in my party. I can't believe how crooked these people are and they expected me to believe their lies!! I would not recommend this place to anyone to stay at because of the crooked, poor customer service I received. Unbelievable!! read more

We have rented cottages at Herons Landing on several occasions. Each time was a very pleasant experience. The units are spacious, well appointed, and provide wonderful views of the marina and/ or the river. All of the staff has always been courteous, helpful, and professional. We will stay again and would recommend to anyone who wants to stay in the area. read more

If you are going to buy the taxes per value of the property have to be the highest in the state. On a piece of property valued at $350K your taxes are around $10K per year. read more

Definitely not much of a resort! It's basically a struggling sub-division on the Illinois river. The houses are priced at twice the amount you could buy a nicer home for in Ottawa. The "waterfront" lots are $160K and overlook a mud hole. read more

In January (2015) I contacted Heritage Harbor and rented three cottages for a week (July 25th-August 2nd) for an event at Skydive Chicago. I have rented homes throughout the country for different events and I have never had a financial issue like the one I had with this establishment and the manager, Jeremy. I was emailed the base price for each cottage months ago and paid the deposit immediately. As the event approached, I called the office and spoke with Stacey to find out exactly how much I would owe for each cottage when I arrived. Unfortunately for me, the employee who quoted the final amounts is no longer employed at Heritage Harbor and the amounts were different than what was quoted originally. Jeremy had no explanation for that at all! All the sudden there were luxury taxes and rental costs tacked onto the final amount that I was already quoted. How is that even possible? They obviously do NOT follow the policy "the customer is always right" and charged my card an additional fee of $120. That may not seem like a lot of money but it's the principle. Jeremy looked me in the eye and basically said that I made up the numbers...as they were written in my handwriting. Seriously? His pompous attitude will guarantee that our crew never returns to their establishment ever again. Other cons...horrible landscaping, no wifi in our cottage, spiders throughout the house, minimal household essentials, plus the homes do not have much privacy with lots of windows without curtains. And the HVAC units in Lazy Days and Eddie's Hideaway would have the bottom half of the cottage freezing when the top floor would be hot! I'm all about customer service and Heritage Harbor scores a BIG FAT ZERO!!!! read more

Manager added bogus fees after we received a quote in writing and tried to physically intimidate a female friend that stayed with us. The houses are extremely tiny and there is at least a 20 degree temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs. Forget swimming in the river, it is a muddy mess down there. i live in Chicago and happened upon heritage harbor a few yrs ago. you will not meet a better group of people than these . the property is amazing .. we have stayed in cottages . last during the wine festival in sept of last year . sooo beautiful .. sooo peaceful and yet so fun !!! am considering buying here because its everything you need to feel at home and vacation at the same time . you can boat , fish . hike ,, play and lay at the pool . eat at their restaurant or just chill ! check it out is all I can say !!!!!! read more

Highly recommend spending a night down here. I travel a fair amount across the U.S. for work and would love accommodations like this anywhere I stay. Excellent marina. We arrived later than expected by about 2 hours. Jeremy was still there and was at the dock to help with lines. Everyone is very helpful and will go out of their way to make certain everything is fine. Bryson was very accommodating! The restaurant is terrific, good food and drinks. There is a courtesy car available to run into town. This is one of the finest marinas we have stayed in. read more
