I came here with a close friend. We were looking to adopt a dog or a cat as we were both about to move to a new place and we wanted a companion to help with nerves of a new place and being away from family and such. We spent almost an hour looking at all the animals and asked to visit with a little kitten named hector. We gave the lady helping us all the details about our move and that there would be another cat living in the home, ect. Everything was great. We met the cat, we loved him. He was shy at first but opened up be very quickly and we had a great connection with him. We talked about it and started to fill out the adoption paperwork and then all the sudden this woman at the front desk asks who we are filling out paperwork for, I say hector and her exact words were "oh we are going to have to think about that." At first I thought she was joking around, no she was serious. She claimed that hector a 4 month old kitten had become bonded with his kennel mate and she thinks if we try to take one without the other we will have behavior problems. I asked "what behavior problems?" She claimed that the kittens had gone to a foster home after they got fixed and were separated and supposedly acted "depressed". So an animal acted depressed after a surgery in a new place? Okay? That's very normal and not an accurate representation of the animals behavior. She should know that. She then became very firm saying "I can't let them go separately." So she started out with a maybe and then changed to a definitely aka story changing aka bs. Not to mention she would not look me in the face while giving me her "reasons" as to why we couldn't adopt him. We brought up the idea of foster to adopt which allows us to see his behavior and if he is truly depressed we would not adopt him and her response to that was that we were out of the range to foster. I live in Surry by the way, a town over. Here's the thing animals being bonded is a real thing but it's more often between two animals that lived in home together for years or maybe months, not between kittens who shared a kennel. Not to mention this was a 4 month old kitten, they haven't even formed their true personality's yet. She said that they always laid on each other as a reason they were bonded but news flash animals lay on each other all the time that are not bonded, for example the 4 puppies they had were all laid on each other when we got there and one went home by itself while we were there. I have adopted 3 animals as well as worked at animal shelter and I don't claim to be an expert but I'm not a dummy either and something was clearly fishy in this situation. There's was either something about us she didn't like, she was trying to save that kitten for herself/ a friend, she has some control freak problem, or she doesn't know what she's doing. The situation was extremely upsetting, animals are very important to me and when I'm filling out paperwork I have my heart set. She tried to show my friend "other kittens" but we don't see the animals as products we see them as potential family so we were not going to just grab another one. Honestly I cried for an hour after because I was heart broken. I'm not writing this review to tell people to steer clear of this shelter, because all of the animals there still need homes and for the most part most of the other staff were very friendly and helpful. I'm writing it so that lady has some form of accountability and for our experience to just be out there. I contemplated making a review at all but reading through the other reviews and seeing a couple of similar experiences, I wanted to share. read more

If you're looking to adopt an animal, I highly recommend Heritage Humane Society. They have a good website to help you get started. We adopted our first dog from HHS last year and wanted to expand our family, so we adopted a second dog about two months ago. We encountered the same staff and volunteers during both visits, and they were thrilled to see our first dog when we brought her with us to find her a brother/sister. Their facility was modern and clean, and there were several play rooms and an outdoor fenced area to interact with the animals. For safety reasons, I waited outside with our first dog while my husband and staff discussed possible candidates for our family. They brought out a few dogs one at a time until we found the perfect match for us, another older female. They screen their animals and potential adopters for suitability, and their fees were moderate (we payed about $200 for our second dog). It covered their shots and spay/neuter, if applicable. We were sent home with a small bag of dog food, a goodie bag, and a volunteer-made blanket. FYI, several area vets offer a free medical check-up one week after adoption. read more

This is now Heritage Humane Society of Williamsburg. This used to be a great place to Volunteer, visit and adopt pets from. Now they have a new director and it is now a dangerous place. In the last 5 months they have had more than 20 animal bites to the public and shelter workers. The dogs are going cage crazy and the cats are being stacked like collectibles because the new director does not have the knowledge to take care of animals and humanely remove animals that are not adoptable. read more

My roommate recently adopted an adorable cat from the shelter, and naturally, I visited because I was itching to get a pet. They have both dogs, cats, and a lot of kittens! The shelter is divided into two areas for the felines and dogs. There are two rooms where you can play with the cats/kittens. I've been a couple of times, and the switch out the animals in each room, so some of it is chance if they have kittens available or mainly older cats. There's a room with cages for older cats. On the other side, there are areas for the dogs, and they have another room if you want to meet with one animal at a time. The staff are always welcoming, and it's a great place to volunteer your time. Save some money from breeders and adopt a cute shelter animal instead! read more

We come here a lot because my daughter absolutely loves cats but we just don't have the time to spend with one and she's a little too young in my opinion (3years old) the staff are always very happy and friendly. Today we went and we got a free lesson in cat upper respiratory infections and how they can spread really fast and ways to prevent it. They really seem to care a lot about the animals they take in, it shows in the sweet, loving way the employees interact with the animals. read more

We adopted a wonderful dog from here a few weeks ago. She had an eye condition that was going to need treatment but she was a total sweetheart and I fell in love instantly. I knew she was going to be the perfect emotional support animal for my depression/anxiety disorder. What we didn't know was the myriad of other health issues that she had that were going to need extensive treatment. For example she had an eye ulcer on top of her condition that if we hadn't treated it she would have gone blind. She had worms that apparently the shelter knew about but never told us. She had a bad ear infection. All of these things were treated with SIX different medications some of which were given multiple times a day. Unfortunately we just didn't have the resources to be able to afford all the care she was going to need as we have a 9 month old. We had to take her back with no refund. Here I am a week later and I am still devastated over this whole thing because I loved her. I had built such a relationship in those few short days. I am writing this in hopes someone will read it and find her. Her name is Rochelle. She is the sweetest. She loves to lay on the couch and watch tv. She is very good in her crate and was amazing with my son. Please give her a good and loving home. I love you Chelle and I think of you everyday. read more

Heritage Humane is a wonderful place. You can tell they really care about the animals there and try so hard to find them good homes. They require their volunteers to go through a training session to handle all the animals and work very hard at adopt-a-thons to help people see their animals. They have events very often throughout the year to help the community get involved, fun things that people can come to regardless of whether or not they have pets, but also some for people to specifically bring their pets to something fun.
