Yes! Yes! Yes! I'm not sure where to begin.... The Hermosa is the oldest hotel on Catalina and it's amazing. They have done a great job keeping it up and keeping it authentic. We had a Jack & Jill room and it was so cute! Our son loved having his own room with a shared bathroom, and we parents loved having our own space as well! It was very clean and relaxing and had a microwave, mini fridge, tv, etc. We loved the vintage feel of the hotel. Honestly, the highlight was Josh. Josh manages the hotel and is truly one of the most genuine, nicest, good vibe-giving, positive person ever! Not only that, but he is super passionate and knowledgeable about Catalina and loves to share. His vibe and attitude are contagious! I cannot say enough about him and his hospitality. This hotel sufficed for our two night stay. The owners are friendly and laid back, there is a cute bar downstairs and complimentary coffee and tea. Check in and check out was very easy and the staff was helpful when I asked for extra toilet paper. The room was just ok-plug in our room was hanging out of the wall, the floor was not the cleanest and the shower head was very low (we are short people) and we had to duck to get our head under the water. This hotel was sufficient for a short overnight stay, but it is nothing fancy. If this hotel were on the mainland I would say that the $200/night price tag we paid was on the high side, but since it's in Catalina Island and near the beach it's probably in a reasonable range. The rooms are a bare minimum: don't expect much more than a bed and a TV. There was a microwave on top of a small fridge as well, and one bedside table. There are not very many outlets available throughout the room, so charging phones and stuff could be a challenge. Also, because there was no table in one of the rooms, we had to eat on the bed, which was ok, but not great, especially if you have messy eaters. The other room (we had two adjoining) had a small "desk" area. The bathrooms: showers were small, but the size was ok. The water was not hot! It was just lukewarm on one side and downright cold in the other, which is not great for someone who loves a hot shower. The curtains were too big for the shower as well, so the whole time the curtains would rub up against you. Overall I guess the stay was fine, and if I were on a budget I'd stay here again. read more

I came here with a group of 4 including myself for a girls weekend/birthday trip. We chose to spend a little more and stay in this hotel vs a different accommodation thinking it would be clean since it is marketed as a $500 per night "boutique hotel". We arrived hopeful and in good spirits until we discovered: mold in the bathroom, our sleeping arragement was a bunk bed built for 8-12 year olds, the comforter looked like it had seen much better days (see photo attached- I wish I was joking), the napkin roll had dirt on it, the place smelled like a petting zoo, and if that is not enough: When my friend tested positive for covid and we had to leave early-- they refused to refund us anything (not even a small portion). Then, the manager had the audacity to come to the room and tell my friend who was in the room quarantined by herself feeling miserable that she needed to vacate immediately (mind you we were charged for the room that evening). I can't express in words how poorly we were treated by not only the manager, but the staff as well (aside from Rachel and Deena who were the only lights in that very dark place). I honestly wish I was making this up. It is sad for so many reasons. They have a room to store your belongings prior to check-in which is very convenient! Family got a Jack & Jill room in the hotel and I opted for a cottage room. Hotel & cottage is more on the vintage and modernizing side but it's the experience that we enjoyed. They were very accommodating to our needs. Though the rooms weren't very spacious it didn't matter as we were out & about, exploring. Note: if you have a stroller and/or need wheelchair access, this place does not have an elevator. I had a stroller but hubby and I didn't mind the flight of stairs where we stayed in cottage L. Expect to walk flights of stairs if you want a better view. Also, there are no tables and chairs in our rooms but we did hang out in the lobby to enjoy our hot coffee and cinnamon roll from the nearby cafe. Location wise, it was perfect for us as restaurants and main walkways were convenient located. Vons is also about a 5-10 minute walk too! Pic is from the cottage side of the hotel. Had a blast staying here with my boyfriend this past week! It was a nice little vacay for the two of us & this hotel was just perfect for 3 nights & 4 days. It is small but definitely perfect for couples, I could even fit an air mattress too. The bathroom shower is a bit tiny but I was use to that because I have a tiny shower back at home Lol. The kitchen was perfect, supplied us with soap & a scrub. The refrigerator had some ice packs which came in handy for our beach day. They do accommodate beach towels, beach chairs & umbrellas which I absolutely loved so much! The rooms seem like soundproof a bit because we didn't hear anything at all during the day/night, unless everyone was super quiet around us? we got lucky with nice neighbors. They also do have a bar which we didn't get the chance to go to:( but definitely will next time for sure! Everyone that worked there was super nice & any questions I had they had no problem answering. My bf & I will be coming back here soon again this year! Hotel Re-Opened after Covid-19 Review There were some unfavorable reviews which I was worried about but we got here mid June 2020 and the hotel spent their stay at home orders doing major renovations to the hotel! It's very modern and very clean. We had a GREAT time! The location is less than a 10 min walk from where the Catalina Express boat docks at. Less than a 5 min walk to the beach and like a 3 min walk to Vons. Every shopping area was steps away. The arcade nearby isn't open yet but that's less than 5 mins away. We booked a room with a kitchenette, a definite necessity when you bring kids. Room 133D is a 3bedroom suite with a kitchen and a balcony located with a Main Street access upstairs. I would say this would fit 3 adults and 2 kids comfortably or 2 adults and 4 kids. The room has WiFi. Only the living room and master bedroom have a TV. Bringing an Amazon fire stick will help your TV watching experience better. If you come here during the summer, I suggest you pack less clothes and more bathing suits! Lol. We were in the water everyday. There's a private beach nearby called Descanso Beach where you are allowed to take your drinks to the water, rent cabanas or kayaks. If you ask the front desk, they will kindly offer you a ride over there but you have to walk back. It's a 10 min walk though, so no biggie. The welcome desk has some super friendly staff! Matt was amazingly sweet and accommodating. The girl with the red hair, I think her name was Rachel offered many suggestions of what to do nearby. Booked a package online with ferry and hotel included for 2 days seemed like such a great deal but after booking the information was very different then online. I wanted this place to be cheap and cheerful, but it was more dingy and cramped. The outside of the hotel looked charming, but the inside was kinda depressing. Only stay here if you can't afford anywhere else. It's one of the cheapest places on the island, but there's a reason for that. It just feels yucky and stained. It's old, the rooms are small and there's no where to put your stuff. Even the drawers were full of extra blankets and bedding. Do not stay here for an anniversary or anything romantic. If you've got no other options, it does the job. In high season (summer) this hotel will feel like a rip off. There are two flights of stairs to pull your luggage up, and no one offered to help us with this. And while the windows look like they might keep sound out, you will hear the local live music as if someone was screaming it right into your ear. Bring ear plugs. The WiFi didn't reach our room, but it worked in the lobby. Nice touch: the fans in the rooms helped it feel less stuffy. We were bummed that the room wasn't avail until exactly 3pm. I didn't deduct any stars for that, because that's the proper check in time. But they weren't flexible with check in or check out (11am.) They do have a big room downstairs where you can store your luggage. Things I liked: the location is great, and they have a "community balcony" that can seat four or five on each floor. The hotel had extra bathrooms and showers to use. Our room had a mini fridge and a microwave, which was convenient. A big grocery store is only two blocks away. Unfortunately this was NOT a good experience. We booked a room and when we arrived the room was like a sauna! Full sun, and not enough window coverage to keep the sun out, and no elevator, no working ice machine( 3rd floor room) and the very very small window air conditioning unit wasn't working??? I went to the front desk, that was unattended for 20 mins and ask for another room. I was told they could give me another room for the night, the repair man was unavailable and I would have to go back to the room the next day. This is an adorable hotel with a fantastic location. Our little cottage is great! Our stay is not yet over, but I decided to write a review now based on our interactions with the staff. Everyone has been extremely welcoming, relaxed, and helpful. Bailey, in particular, has been wonderful. He has gone above and beyond our needs and has been happy to oblige our requests. I'm not sure if he's a manger (if not, he should be).. but he really seemed to care about our stay and grateful to have us as guests. Made us feel wanted and welcome. It's so relieving to have a good home base to come back to take a breather while exploring the island during the day, and to come back to wiped out at the end of it. The "owner" Josh is a total piece is crap of a person , And verbally abusing to his customers if they dare to ask for anything to please their stay. Also charges things without your consent and surprises you with fees that make no sense , And it's best just best not to confront him cause he'll scream and just flat out make your stay a memorable trip for the wrong reasons. Came over with my fiancé for couple of nights to celebrate my 50th Birthday. Upon check in Jasmine the hotel admin realized it was my big day and instantly upgraded our room to one with a kitchen. We were thrilled. She was very polite and inviting. The other girl, with red hair insisted helping up the stairs with our luggage and was just as inviting. The room was what I'd expect in Catalina. And what I mean by that is that everything is a little smaller and older. That's not a problem for us so just know before you go Avalon is a small island town so everything is a bit smaller. it's an old, quaint hotel with only stairs, no elevator. We had a Comfortable and clean bed. Bathroom was also clean with towels and soaps. Each morning when we went out for the day we were greeted at the front desk with a smile. On the last day the happily let us do a late check out after I asked them first thing in the morning. Our experience was a good one and we would definitely book this again in the future. read more

Run fast and far away from this seedy hotel. This is by far the dirtiest room that I've ever stayed in. Moldy shower head, dust-caked ceiling fan blades and window air conditioner, dirty bathroom fixtures, trash and crumbs on the floor, stained bedspread, stained sheets, discolored streaks at multiple locations on the walls, broken fridge, leaking shower out onto bathroom floor and just downright smelly. The condition was so horrible that I knew it was beyond anything management could do to fix with a simple phone call. Worse, there is only a single properly marked and routed exit from levels above the first floor. This is a fire trap. This place should be immediately shut down by the fire marshal. When I mentioned my stay to some local tour guides, they told me it had a terrible reputation for being the worst hotel on the island. I also spoke to a few other guests who had the same reaction as me. We agreed it was not just a bad experience, but uniquely awful. Like most vacationers, I work hard for my money, which sadly doesn't go as far as it used to. This place was a complete robbery. I would have killed for a Motel 6. Do not stay here! It's one of the most affordable hotels on the island but after staying there, you know why. First there is no elevator but they do tell you about that on their website. However the rooms are ridiculous. It was 3 of us and we got the suite. This so called suite is extremely small. it does have a full size bed and a sofa bed however if you let the sofa bed out, you can't open the refrigerator. That's how small it is. The room looked like they tried to provide some paint over staff but left it unfinished. Theres a so called kitchenette that was extremely dusty and uncleaned as well as holes in the window screens so insects could come through. When we arrived there was another resident complaining to management about the cleanliness of the rooms. There was one mirror in the whole room and it was over the sink. I'm 5 foot tall so I couldn't even see myself to check my face. If we were able to find another hotel at the last minute we would have. No one should have to stay in this place. On a positive note, the bartender was great. We needed a drink at the end of the night to accept the condition of our room. Some residents joked that there were shirts that said "I survived a night at the Hermosa" I now know why. read more

We stayed at the Hermosa Hotel in mid July 2021 in the Villas. We opted for this hotel based on their availability, location to the shorefront, and room amenities (kitchenette). Pros - great location - reasonably affordable for Catalina - nice exterior ambiance. Cons - unorganized and over promised establishment. Upon checking in, they said that they were overbooked and would need to downgrade our originally planned kitchenette room to a standard room. They slightly reduced our fee for the inconvenience, but seemed overall very unapologetic and unsympathetic. - the new assigned room was by far the smallest I have ever stayed in, it was dirty (stains on bed and curtains), the room floor had a significant slant which made the bed tilt to the right (we couldn't sleep because we were sliding into each other), the bed comfort was completely unacceptable, there was a protruding power outlet that blocked my pillow (no headrest), the tv didn't work, a tiny bathroom with a filthy shower (outdoor beach showers were nicer), - inconsistently nice vs rude staff - called to ask some general questions prior to the trip and they were short answered and rude. Had a pleasant welcome upon arrival and then had another rude staff member prior to checkout (probably the same person from the initial call). - no front desk beyond 6pm, only a special line for emergencies, so by the time we checked in and they told us our room had changed, they were closing for the evening so we couldn't voice our concerns there. This stay was for a birthday celebration and it was so disappointing to be such a dark cloud on an overall nice trip. The pictures shown in Yelp do not encompass all of the rooms. We had a lovely stay at Hermosa Hotel in Catalina Island! We stayed at the Deluxe Ocean View Cottage, two adults and two kids (3 and 5yo). First of all, the staff were all SO NICE! They were ready to help and so accommodating. We arrived at 11 am and stored our bags by the lobby, we headed to the beach to let the kids play and grab lunch and we soon got a call that our room was ready well before 4pm check in time. The cottage we were at is the nicest one, and sits at the very top of 90 steps of stairs. There is a landing every 10 steps or so, which I used to take a break because I'm out of shape apparently. The kids however ran up no problem. I still hear them go "what's wrong mom, its so easy!" The views were of the ocean and the city which was so beautiful to see at night. It's an old cottage that has been renovated DIY style-- However, please take the time to take a tour of the island and get the vibe. It is quaint, people don't live in huge modern spaces, but that's the charm of Catalina. Also we were mindful of being respectful of island living. That said, be prepared for small bedrooms and bathrooms (showers and toilets). The kitchen, bathrooms, bedding, towels were all clean. Small toiletries, and hair dryer were provided. Toilet flushed great, shower water remained hot. There's a wall a/c unit that worked perfectly for us. There were two small tv's in the unit with cable. The kids fit easily on the futon in the living room, the main bedroom is small and had a queen bed. The hotel is located about 4 minute walk to Descanso beach which we loved, we were able to borrow beach toys and a few beach towels from the front desk at Hermosa. It's also a short walk to Vons. A few things we wanted to note: -The double doors in the living room that lead out to the balcony don't really close all the way. I think the doors are too big for the door fame, it does lock though. -We like to walk barefoot in our living areas, but with wood flooring it was a little dusty and we had to wipe it down. I'd say wear house shoes/slippers. -At night the cottage is a little dark, there's warm yellow lighting in the kitchen ceiling and bedroom which is nice but white light in the living room ceiling fan is a little jarring. A floor lamp with warm light would be appreciated. -Please be careful with little kids in the balcony, use common sense. Thank you so much Hermosa Hotel! We had a great time! read more

We ended up having to stay an extra night because our boat back was cancelled and the girl at the front desk was so nice and helpful in getting everything sorted out. This is a nice hotel. It's not super fancy but it works. I picked this hotel because they will let me bring my dogs. The people who work here are very nice. I like room 4 which is located on the main floor, it does have a very small bathroom and really no storage but it is functional. Its also easy to go in and out of the hotel with my dogs. The cottages are very cute but some are up many stairs, not fun when you have to take dogs for walks a lot. The rooms are not ready until 4 but sometimes they are ready early and they will hold your luggage for you before the room is ready. There are a few things they need to fix but nothing that ruined my trip. Just know this is not a 4 star fancy hotel and all the rooms are different. read more

Our group initially booked a two-night stay at the Hermosa Hotel in Avalon, California as confirmed via the reservation. After arriving at the check-in time in the afternoon, we were met with unsanitary room conditions and a lack of deep cleaning for our party of four. For instance, we discovered our sofa was infused with bread crumbs, dust and dirt around windows, and unsanitary conditions in the restroom. However, we were willing to accommodate knowing we would only be in the room for two nights and enjoying festivities on the island. By Saturday afternoon, a member of our group received unprecedented news prompting us to make scheduled arrangements to leave that evening by 9:00 pm. In deciding to do so, our group went to the front desk to speak with management about the possibility of a credit or refund due to unforeseen circumstances, knowing that there was a minimal chance, but was encouraged to do so just in case. However, that's when management became irate with our questions of service and accommodations after asserting a medical emergency. Not only was the staff unpleasant regarding the rules and policies of which the management could not effectively articulate, but also in our questioning of a birthday gift that was purchased via phone and promised to be delivered to the hotel room. The birthday gift never arrived in the hotel room after a family member confirmed via phone with a member of management after receiving payment that the gift would arrive in our room. Above all, our group was deeply saddened by the discriminatory actions and unconscious bias towards a targeted member of our group not only from management, but guests of the hotel too. Our group was thrilled to spend our first time ever on the island of Catalina and capture the moment at the hotel location given its scenic backdrops like pictured on their Instagram page, but was approached by guests deeming us as "trespassers" and "disturbances to the community" after seeing the one African American person in their vantage point. In addition, after receiving a knock on our door from management, we was met by the general manager demanding us to leave and exit the premises without consulting us with accommodations or recommendations to improve our stay given the miscommunication coming from their superiors. Instead, we were demanded to leave the premises and vacate the island. We felt heartbroken by the fact that these assumptions were casted against us as we uphold certain values and respect to all. Our first time to Catalina Island was not the experience we had hoped for and ultimately ruined by the unjust and unorderly conduct from management by the Hermosa Hotel. read more

This room cost us $345.00 for ONE night. Touted as an ocean view room, they neglected to mention that we had to climb almost 80 stairs to get up there. Definitely a great place to stay in Catalina on a budget. The hotel is by far the most affordable place to stay on the island. The staff is very friendly (especially Nick!) and the check in process was very pleasant as our room was ready fairly early. However, it's important to note that there are few amenities offered here. It is clean and a comfortable place to rest your head after a long days worth of activities. Nothing luxurious. That said, it's probably best to bring a towel or two of your own as only one set is provided for short stays. My friend and I were a bit disappointed that we could not be provided two towels each without incurring an additional charge. Other cons would be the paper thin walls and constant noise. Guests coming and going were quite noisy and easily heard in our room as we were located right next to the stairway (no elevators). These cons were very minor, though! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. I will definitely plan to stay at the Hermosa again when visiting Catalina. read more

Cons: Sheets were clean but inexplicably sandy? There was no hot water. And the bathroom is tiny tiny. Beds were less than comfortable. I got little sleep due to sandy bed and extremely noisy neighbor's. Pros: easy access to the entire island, great location nice staff, easy bike and luggage.storage. affordable. This was the WORSE experience we've ever had. Someone broke into our room while we were asleep! The man broke through the back bedroom window where two kids were sleeping on the top bunk bed. My 11-year-old nephew was on his phone in the living room when the man walked down the hallway, my nephew screamed and the man ran and went back out the way he came. Before any of this happened, we were already going to talk to the manager because our room was filthy, the floor was so dirty all of our feet were black, the dishes were dirty, multiple outlets and lights didn't work, at night it is SO loud from the bar across the way and cars/carts driving past, and two windows did not have a lock on them. I'm writing this review because I don't want anyone else to experience what we did... our three kids are terrified, none of us can sleep and we're stuck here until the morning. read more

I do not recommend. They look for ways to up their price because if you book on booking.com its cheaper. Also they tried to charge me axtra $25.00 for my dogs without telling me first. The phone lady said booking is cheaper but if I upgrade it would be more for my Birthday week. My dogs are potty trained and they said only one dog is usually allowed. No thanks. It is a small hotel but very nice welcome staffs. Very good place to stay overnight at Avalon Catalina Island. Room is ready before time to check in and they let us check in before the time plus they also offered the beach chairs, lifesaver, beach towels, and sand playing shovels plus hot tea and coffee with free of charges all day long. I recommend this place if you are looking for a good place to stay over and good service. read more

I emailed the hotel earlier today, and doubt I will get a response. Shame on me for not reading the reviews before booking. WORST hotel experience of our lives. Filthy, uncomfortable, and rooms are tiny. Nothing at all like their website photos and descriptions. Complete opposite of everything we had hoped for -- bed bugs, dirty floors, hair dryer sparked flames, mold, heaters were broken, toilet was stained and FILTHY. Lobby bar was closed...the entire time. Ice machine broken and dismembered in the lobby. The list goes on. read more
