If I could give them less I would. When renting the car I specifically explained to the representative who was the manager at the location that I am only seeking coverage for specific days. The manager then stated " I did explain to her that she could do the coverage for a week and extend it out if she needed." I only asked for the remaining days of that weekday. He then proceeded to tell me that the amount per day was 25 dollars and to sign. I asked for the total and he said it would come out to around 200 dollars without tax. He then proceeded to tell me to sign below. I've made multiple calls to the company and each time I was reassured I was not going to be charged for anything. The manager was deceitful and used these words. He stated he could do certain days the company claims they could not. This is Failure of representing the company policy's and fail to take accountability. The customer service is terrible, even for Gold Plus Rewards President's Circle members. The man on the left is unpleasant and not customer-oriented. He works on Fridays. If you can't smile at customers or resolve their issues, find another job. I reserved an SUV a few weeks before my arrival. When I arrived, they told me that only one car was left, which was not suitable for a family trip. There was a minivan and other cars in the parking lot at the same time. But he said he could only give me that one. I agreed. The registration process was very slow. They didn't move at all. As soon as I got behind the wheel, I immediately smelled marijuana and ash everywhere. The cup holders were spilled with liquid. These lazy employees did not clean the interior and gave me the car without cleaning it. They have a vacuum cleaner in the parking lot, though. The customer service is terrible. You're better off finding another location. This one should be closed. The second incident happened exactly a week later. I came in the morning and asked if there were any cars. The same employee who had served me a week earlier asked me if I had a reservation. I said that I didn't have a reservation. He replied that they didn't have any cars. I went out, made a reservation, and came back. I said that now I had a reservation. He said it didn't matter whether you had a reservation because we didn't have any cars. Then why did you ask about a reservation earlier? I asked when the cars might arrive. He said 4 p.m.(so stupid), the office closes at 6, and I need a car for the day to get to work. I was told the vehicle I reserved could not be released because I made a same day reservation. I was also told there are people that reserved the same sized vehicle, weeks or days before me. Why allow people to reserve vehicles that the company can't provide. If you run out of vehicles, the customer should be notified immediately! I travelled from the Bronx to pick up the compact vehicle I reserved & I was offered an electric vehicle. If I wanted an electric vehicle, I would have reserved one. The customer service was below satisfactory nor accommodating. There should have been a free upgrade, the next location should have been called, or I should have been notified of changes to my reservation. The heavy set Caucasian representative had an oh well attitude & the tall African decent representative made a very tasteless joke about the situation & I didn't appreciate the bad joke at all! read more

Hertz has filed bankruptcy, and they are now liquidating all of their assets. What does that mean? All of their inventory of vehicles (cars, trucks, etc) are up for sale!! Most will say, "I don't want a used vehicle from a rental place". To each their own, but with the prices being below Kelly Blue Book value; its a really sweet deal. So... I've just rented the full size SUV from Hertz @ amazing price during this busy season (even with Covid.. all of SUVs were rented out actually). I decided Hertz @ Fortlee due to the convenience of location ( close to where I live and the Newark Airport ) as well as the competitive price. of course. Well, it started as a bit of disappointment b/c when I got there to pick up my car, the representative said it isn't available and they wanted to contact me but couldn't locate my number to call ahead. ( booked through hotwire...so I blamed them lol) Wish they had e-mailed me though..as I am really responsive !. Anyway, it kinda screwed my plans for the day, but he was ready to offer other options like a big sedan... Unfortunately, I really needed the full size SUV to fit a huge carriers. He asked if I could come back in a couple of hours and I didn't really have an option, so I agreed. Well, then, why no deduction of ratings? He was apologetic (not rude) and seemed to understand how frustrated I was all while dealing with other customers and calls that kept coming in. I could tell how busy they were..and I understood there was nothing he could do for the renters who just won't return the car when promised . Anyway, I went back there a bit earlier than the time he told me to come back, and he said in 10mins I can get a car I wanted. So yes. the car wasn't clean due to obvious reasons that I rather wanted it asap..so I didn't mind..(had my own sanitation kit lol and wore a mask even inside a car). can it was more to pick up friends with lots of carriers. (emphasis on luggage rather than friends lol) Now the real reason for 5 stars is that the other gentleman who helped me out (a tall African American representative, I didn't catch his name) was so friendly with all things were going on..I could see he has been running around trying to take care of lots of things and even though I was early, he apologized for my waiting and promptly handled the matter without any issue. smooth ! Yes.. the car was from Florida and dirty outside with lots of scratches and all but very comfortable and worked out perfectly.....more importantly, a good ..personal customer service and their friendly demeaner made everything okay in my case. .. ( I wasn't even in particularly in a good mood either with a lack of much needed sleep) So my take is this...I know we all want everything to be perfect for us and all...but when it's busy season in which a few agents have to deal with such volume of businesses at once, just give them a little break. :) I have rented smaller SUVs for next 2 days, and I will update on the review. read more

I am a disabled Veteran. I've been a Hertz member for years, first as a normal everyday citizen, then with my Company. I've rented from Hertz in various cities across states, but my most favorite location is the one at my hometown of Hackensack, until now. I needed a business rental for a few days, but I had to rent from the city of Fort Lee, NJ. That's where I met this wonderful young man by the name of Jack, his customer service was exemplary, his demeanor was amiable and this location was spotless and well organized. When I arrived Jack gave me three choices of vehicles: 2017 Kia, 2018 Nissan Versa and 2018 Ford Focus. I chose the 2018 Focus, the vehicle is a beautiful colored Rust Red. I loved renting from Hertz @Fort Lee, this place is now one of my two favorite Hertz rental offices. Thank you Jack! read more

I picked up a car Tuesday morning I paid for a bigger SUV and they tried giving me a smaller SUV and I told them no. Then the guy gives me a car that has absolutely zero gas in it it's on empty I was lucky I even made it to a gas station. I've returned the car early last night and I have been trying to call the location for 3 hours they will not pick up the phone. The 800 number doesn't pick up the phone.. I booked a car, a few weeks in advance, for a trip out of state on Columbus Day weekend. About 20 mins before this location was set to close I called to let them know I would be arriving soon, since it was close to closing time . At this point the Hertz location informed me that the car I reserved was not available. When I arrived at the location another person was checking out, and I stood in line. After a few moments they asked why I was there and I said I was there to pick up the car I reserved. At this point, someone emerged from the back office and began addressing me. He didn't state his name, position, didn't say hello. Was just sort of mid sentence into why a car I reserved was in fact not reserved. They told me they had tried to call me a few minutes before, but hadn't left a message. I explained that it you fail to deliver a message to a person they will remain uninformed about the information you wished to share on said call. This struck them as brand new information. They explained that I could simply come back tomorrow for a car. I explained that I had a hotel reservation to get to and had just cabbed here from another state (NY to NJ). Again, they seemed confused about why I was interested in getting a car I had reserved. As I waited for them to assist the other customer in the storefront, she started telling me that all the car rental locations nearby were sold out, that this was the fifth place she had tried to rent a car. And here she was getting the last car this Hertz had. That's when it became clear that the car I had reserved wasn't missing in action, it was simply rented to another person who got there before me. To clarify, I wasn't late for my pickup, they just sold it out from under me. They told me there was nothing I could do, vacation be damned, come back tomorrow. Eventually I convinced them to call another Hertz location to secure a car there. But sweet lord were they awful. read more

I've rented here probably 5-6 times. Always had a clean & relatively new to brand new car. Never had any issues with the cars during the rental. Never saw any sneaky after charges like a few other companies. They have surprisingly lower rates (if you have AAA) than other car rentals in the area. I've gone to a competitor and didn't particularly like their sketchy location so when I can, I rent from here. Sometimes I have to do the drop box drop off. I always get an email receipt. Great customer service. Very laid back & very friendly. A few times too laid back but better than pushy or trying to trick you into things like those damn airport rental locations. read more

The manger Luke is nice until something actually goes wrong. I found that he acted smug like he was invincible. I am disappointed with Hertz for trying to charge me for a tire that blew out likely due to being overfilled. I had the car for less that five hours and the tire completely blew out and shredded on the high way. There is no evidence that I hit anything. When I called Hertz Roadside they were complete unhelpful and told me there were no new cars available near by and said the only thing I could do is put the doughnut on and wait until the next day or drive a far distance to an airport. I called Luke at Fort Lee Hertz and he basically said the same thing. He was acting very nice only to make sure I would bring the car back. Both Fort Lee Hertz and Roadside showed no concern for my safety & made me drive on a doughnut for almost 24hrs. When I brought the car back after having to drive to work on a doughnut, the manger Luke told me I was responsible for the tire. When he saw I was upset by this Luke sat back in his chair with his arms crossed in a "here we go" manner. I thought he acted smug and took zero responsibility for giving me a defective car. I think its a scam for Hertz to make you buy extra packages just to cover the "what ifs". That tire was clearly overfilled and I will be refuting all charges on my credit card. read more

I scheduled and pre-paid for a rental from this location a week ahead of time. 12 hours before I was supposed to pick up, I was called and told that not only did they not have any cars to rent me, but they didn't even carry the size I had requested (Economy). When I asked what their solution to this problem was, I was told to call the airport locations. I asked the representative of she could check to see if they had any available and she said I would have to call myself. As I was hanging up, the representative asked me to keep them in mind in the future because they have the best stock and best prices. I should have asked if she was high. If only I could put ZERO stars. Avoid this Hertz AT ALL COSTS. The employees are unprofessional, rude, and liars. They have a negative attitude towards women and have no problem talking down to them. I never expect services/companies to live by "the customer is always right" mantra, but I do expect them to operate with a sense of decency and respect, especially when the customer is trying to use facts, logic, and reasoning. I insisted multiple times that they check security footage to corroborate my side of the story. Instead, they believe, and I quote, "it is your word against ours." Avoid the men who work here and avoid the cars they rent. They will try to push their errors off on the customer to cover themselves. This is a disgusting method of operating. The manager, above all else, is a male chauvinistic, arrogant, human being. Corporate needs to step in and handle this location immediately. Because of the crazy storm in the east coast last night, Hertz didn't have cars returned. However, because I had a reservation, they took care of me when a full size car was returned and I had ordered a compact. They let me take the full size car and did not charge me extra for it. I would give 0 stars if I could. Was given a reservation for Saturday at 12noon and they close at 12 noon. The agent who processed this reservation was obviously at a call center in the phillippines. He messed up. Second mess up was I was never informed over the phone that this location closes at noon. The confirmation email also doesn't indicate this. Third mess up was whoever works at the fort lee location couldn't have the decency to call me and inform me that my reservation time was going to be troublesome. Nobody gives a damn. I just spent another hour on the phone with more call center incompetents. Have to take a cab the Newark and pick up a car there. No one in America wants to answer the call center agents so I'm going blind and hoping they don't charge me 3x as much now. Don't reserve through a call center.
