    Was charged 400$ for a cleaning fee for smoke in the car. The car had a faint hint of smoke when I received it. Ridiculous. Shady business

    I am beyond disappointed with the absolute failure of service at this location. As a traveler with…read moreExecutive Elite status, I expect the "Emerald Reserve" experience to mean something. Instead, I was met with total disappointment and lack of accountability. I reserved a Full-Size SUV weeks in advance for a critical task: transporting athletes for the Olympic Committee. Upon arrival, I was told the branch was sitting at negative nine (-9) cars. How a rental hub manages to overbook to that extent is mind-boggling. The "solutions" offered were insulting: * Zero Accountability: I was told a customer support manager would call me to resolve the situation. I was there almost a week. Surprise--nobody ever called. * Passing the Buck: The staff literally told me to go check with Avis. Avis (rightfully) quoted a Suburban at $400 a day because of the last-minute nature of the request. * Financial Drain: Because National failed to honor a high-tier reservation, I had to shell out roughly $200 a day in Ubers just to get my athletes to their venues on time. Despite my status and the clear professional stakes involved, the staff offered absolutely nothing to mitigate the disaster they created. No voucher, no shuttle assistance, no effort. I have to return to Gainesville in two weeks, and I can say with certainty that I will never step foot in this National location again. They clearly don't value their "highest-status" members or basic professional reliability. Avoid this location at all costs if you actually need a car to be there when you arrive.

But for the number of times I have rented from them the ratio is low. And the way they handled any problems I've had has been outstanding which in the end goes a long way with me. I know everyone at this location and they are all very polite and accommodating. Need a bigger car than you originally thought, they will help you with that. They have the best prices in town and do not nickel and dime you like the other car rental companies here at the airport. All budget locations are speedy and give good service. Want to make things faster and get rewards? Sign up for Fastbreak online. It shoot ls you ahead of the line (except in gville because it's such a small location). You also have the majority of your info on file so it cuts down on on all the paperwork. If you travel a lot then they have the best rewards! I get tons of rental certificates which adds up to free rentals when I'm on vacation...BONUS!!!! Also, the manager that runs this region (gville to jax) is also very helpful and will go the extra mile to remedy any problems and make sure you always have a positive experience. Side note: Budget and Avis are connected at this location so go to the Avis counter.

    Update #2: I received another replacement. Much cleaner, much more on par with first rental in…read moreterms of quality (hybrid, intermediate suv). This AVIS location has given me dirty cars before, this one was just unbearable. Took too much time (had to leave work) to get to a decent outcome, but it is resolved. Upgraded to three stars to reflect my many decent experiences with AVIS prior to this incident. Update #1: Spoke with customer service agent over the phone again. He was very kind and helpful. He refunded a day of service. He says tI should be able to exchange the car again, which I will do after work (since I have missed quite a bit today). Hopefully the agent at the front desk is as kind as she was during our first two interactions. Bumped to 2 stars pending new pick up. Customer service is lacking throughout. Initial process was seamless. However tire was flat the next morning after very little driving... The process of getting this rectified was difficult. The replacement vehicle was dirty. They haphazardly cleaned and never offered another vehicle or any compensation for lost work time etc. In detail: I rented the car for transporting family for my grandfathers funeral. Initially very easy to get my car. I prepaid, there was a car available immediately. Tire was flat the next day when I went to pack on my lunch break. It was difficult to get anyone on the phone initially. On chat, the first agent on chat "left the chat" without responding and there was no way to reconnect. The second gave me the number for towing and after going through a whole automated phone call worth of questions, I was directed to a site to fill in the same questions, and at the end of this set of questions I was finally given the number to a human agent. My options were presented as try to inflate the tire with the provided air compressor then take the car to a shop myself and they would reimburse for the tire or drive back to AVIS for replacement. Chose the second option, which seemed like a downgrade, despite my used time and effort. In addition, the car was dirty inside and out. Mid on the seats, food and other debris in cup holders on floor etc. The service desk agent seemed annoyed that I bothered her about it. I asked for a replacement vehicle if they weren't going to be able to clean quickly (because this it the middle of my work day), and the guy was nice enough and said 5-10min to clean. However nice he was, it is reflected that it was a 5-10min cleaning job. The car is still quite dirty, but I have to go back to work. I cannot put anymore time into this. I am very disappointed. They could have at least given me a clean vehicle or the desk agent could have been a bit nicer for the exorbitant amount of time it took from my work day to rectify this.

I didn't say anything and he didn't ask and I was in a rush and forgot to do this. Later saw that $17 per day was added for one random protection I didn't ask for or want. I contacted Avis online and they seemed like they were looking into it, then they wrote back that it was legitimate and included on the original reservation. Ridiculous because they had me send them a copy of the reservation confirmation and it clearly shows the lower total and no coverages. They are dishonest AND incompetent. Great combination. Not that you have any better options at GNV but just know going in what to expect and protect yourself accordingly. Also be sure to do before and after videos and photos of your rental so they can't claim extra charges for take damage or that you didn't return it with a full tank. I have benefited numerous times from having done this.

I realized I needed to return it a day earlier than I had planned because of a pre scheduled flight I had the day of, in another city. Due to the prepay option, I would not be refunded for the extra day. I tried contacting customer service to either take off the extra day or to cancel and rebook. The first rep I spoke with was not very nice and told me there's nothing he could do and I would just have to return it early and hope that the shop would refund me. When I tried to explain that the policy told me that I wouldn't be refunded due to prepaying he repeated that he could not help me and then ended the chat. The second rep I got was even ruder than the first and had a nasty attitude the whole time. I was asking for help trying to figure out a way to cancel or change the schedule and she repeated "there's nothing I can do on my end" and instead of trying to assist me with options to change it she started getting irritated with me as I was trying to ask questions the figure out what I should do and also ended the chat on me. I finally found a way to cancel my rental hours later and I will say, I will NEVER be doing business with Hertz Again. It's a shame because I got automatic gold status with my credit card and I was excited to start using this company. Maybe try hiring more pleasant staff and setting a service standard. According to reviews this is a common theme with this company.
