UNRELIABLE. I made my reservation on September 6th for October 6th. This is a remote area so I spent a good amount of time researching options in the area before booking $800 in airfare to ensure there would be an option for me to get to a 6:00 am flight that is 45 miles away from my location (there are no Ubers or Lyfts....especially for a 4:00 am departure). This location was the only option in the area and confirmed they had availability for my reservation.
On Saturday, October 6th, the day of my rental, I called the location to confirm my reservation. I was told they had no cars available and she had tried reaching out to let me know but did not have my contact info (I received email confirmation of my reservation, but was told the location doesn't have access to this information). What's worse, I have an email confirmation from Hertz on October 4th, verifying my updated contact information in my Heryt Gold account. Clearly this location only tried to call me once prior to October 4th and never tried to call again. When I asked her when she tried calling she replied, "I don't know, I've made thousands of calls.". That's a lot of people to have to cancel on!
When I got to the location, the women was not pleasant. She was nasty and declared "let me explain this to you in a way you can understand.". She told me she empathized with me, but clearly she didn't as she would have tried to reach out to me on Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday to let me know of the reservation issues in order to allow me time to come up with a plan B. Had she done so, I could have picked up a car at the Portland airport when I landed on October 5th. She explained she is an independent contractor and could do nothing to help me and I would have to call Hertz customer service. The only issue there was that their customer service is closed Saturday-Sunday per my conversation with the Hertz employee at the number she provided me with. They bes the Hertz employee could offer me was a rental at next closest location.... my destination(the airport).
Ultimately, the cheapest option for me was to book a car service for $204 instead of the $93 I would have cost for the rental. The next best optiona would have been a hotel room in Portland or moving my flight which would have been more than the $111 cost differential. I am not sure why I am taking it on the chin for Hertz's error? They had a month to ensure they had a rental available for my reservation.
I fly and rent a car every week for work and use National. In my 3 years of this routine, I've never had a reservation with no car available. In the end, the location was unreliable, rude, and costly. I would not count on them if you are looking to make a reservation. read more
