Place is trash. Rude rep yelling at an Asian person trying to rent a vehicle who was clearly confused. Raising your voice doesn't help someone understand more. If I didn't need the vehicle so bad I would've walked out. It's like they couldn't hack it at enterprise so they dumped this guy at Hertz. You have other options, use the other options. Cars are scratched up so take pictures and video for yourself. The interior window on my vehicle looked like if Stevie Wonder cleaned it with a dirty wet rag and forgot to dry it off. This review is based on my family's experience in the year 1999, I believe. As Californian travelers visiting family and friends across the US, we walked over to this Hertz (2 parents, 3 children, much luggage). Despite a reservation, they refused to rent a car to us after making us wait several hours, due to the erroneous allegation that my father was a felon. When I arrived to pick up the vehicle, a very rude staff just screamed, to me while I was entering the parking lot, that they did not had any vehicles available. I replied that I had a reservation. I rent quite often from Hertz and the location can be a bit confusing in terms of parking. It's located in downtown New Haven right on a busy corner. In my opinion, the spot has outgrown where they are.. I frequently have problems finding a place to park when I am returning the car as the spot is very small. read more

Gold membership won't help you. They have very thinly staffed this place and the employees seem fine, just highly constrained by the realities of this location and its limitations. - waited over 90 minutes - when I was seen was not able to fulfill rental because I did not bring hte credit card I placed the reservation with, with me. I offered to pay with other credit card, cash or a debit card and was told not possible - then refused to cancel my order - after I cancelled my order it did not seem to process and I had to dispute the charge with my credit card company. Bottom line this place is, as others have said, a total scam and you should seek business elsewhere. While I was there I saw them rent a car with the check engine light on and then insist the car was fine. only at the behest of the customer did they relent and rent him a different car. That car was three classes smaller than what he requested, he waited an extra half hour (part of why i waited so long) and then did not give him any refund. read more

I can't believe this happened a second time at the same location. I prepaid for a gas car and when I arrived there were no gas cars available, just a giant pickup truck and a bunch of electric cars. Renting electric cars is problematic for many reasons, but Hertz seems to think they can pull a bait and switch and shove their electric car fleet down everyone's throat. I asked the people behind the counter to cancel the reservation and refund my money. They told me to call customer service to get a refund and customer service told me to call the billing department. I asked the incomprehensible and bumbling Hertz customer service person to send me the phone number by text or email and she hung up on me. My weekend plans were destroyed. Terrible experience from beginning to end. Surly counter service -- the person refused to answer any questions, telling me to look up answers on the Hertz website on my phone as I stood in front of her. Wouldn't even answer, "What color is the car?" so I could spot it on their lot. Response: "It's the Toyota." The truly terrible part is that Hertz rented me a car with serious mechanical issues. I was driving it to another state for a close relative's wedding. Very quickly I found out that the car barely started each time. I began praying hard each time before I tried to start the car. The problem got worse and worse -- and I had a weekend's worth of wedding events to get to. I called Hertz on a Saturday to see about exchanging the car for a working model and was left on hold for 20 minutes only to have the agent return to tell me all Hertzes were closed on Saturdays (you'd think that would be information she'd have at her fingertips?). She told me to call again in the morning. When I did, guess what I found out? All Hertzes are closed on Sundays, too! The wedding was at 1 p.m. on a Monday, and the nearest Hertz was over two hours away, AND they had no cars available. Awesome! Did they offer me any other assistance or possible solutions? No! The car barely made it to the wedding, limped back to its state of origin, and refused to ever start again. I had to get it towed back to Hertz. Which was a whole 'nother clusterf--k, with Hertz initially sending the tow truck to the wedding state, and then texting me to ask for the phone number of the driver of the tow truck they'd called: "We would appreciate your advisement as they are currently unresponsive." Now, for all of this, you'd think Hertz would offer me a discount on the nearly $60 a day I paid for this pile of bolts and nervous aggravation? Well, first of all, when I called the New Haven office, the manager, Theo, seemed bored by my story. She said she'd have the district manager call me to "discuss compensation." I waited two days and called again. It seems the district manager had left for vacation without calling me. It has now been almost two weeks since that sad excuse for a car was towed away, and I have heard crickets from Hertz. So I finally called Egencia, the agency through which I rented the "car." They called Hertz on my behalf. Hertz or a Hertzbot said that "roadside assistance" had decided not to offer me any compensation for the defective vehicle, other than a voucher for a discount on a future rental. I asked why "roadside assistance" would be making that decision, and the person had no idea. This is just wonderful customer service, Hertz: Give me a voucher so I can rent another defective car from you so that I can be a nervous wreck during another important family occasion. And perhaps you will have me arrested for "stealing" it as well, just to amp up the experience? Sounds great! read more

I have used Hertz for decades, and have never had such a horrendous experience with Hertz or any car rental company for that matter. Though the bar is not all that high for these types of services, this experience exceeded even the lowest expectations of service. Upon landing in New Haven, I called the local Hertz 3 times to confirm my reservation that I booked directly through the Hertz website and let them know I was running a few minutes behind. They did not answer. After paying $25 for a Lyft to get to the Hertz site, then waiting in line for 15 minutes, I was informed that even though I had a confirmed reservation they did not have a car for me. Yasin was the rudest, most unprofessional individual I have ever dealt with in a service position of any type. Yasin is the type of employee who makes you never want to use a company again, no matter how desperate you are. She offered no assistance or apologies and with no emotion whatsoever said you need to leave now, we're closing. Thank goodness, the Avis rep was able to go out of their way and assist us. read more

First of all, we were told this location was at the Amtrack station. It's actually a few blocks away. Trying to get ahold of someone to pick us up so we could get the rental car was difficult. After finally getting the rental car, they charged 3x the reservation price. Did not notice until we got the receipt on the turn in. Then instead of simply refunding the difference, the Hertz main office said we used a different credit card than the reservation was booked under to pick the car up - which was because the woman said "any credit card will due" as we added the extra insurance to the car. I have had to put the excess fees in dispute on my credit card. I would NEVER rent from this location again! read more

Go elsewhere, anywhere. I believe I was the victim of a bait-and-switch tactic at this Hertz. I was given an incorrect receipt showing a lower amount to pay upon leaving. Upon returning I see that they charged me a higher amount. Hertz initially agrees to refund the difference and then overturns it, saying I signed a document. Interestingly, that document's signature doesn't match any signature I use. I'm currently in the process of initiating a chargeback with my credit card company because of duplicitous practices. I've used this Hertz several times and it's been average most times. A bit slow. This is the first time I've felt absolutely cheated. read more

Customer etiquette should be key for any car rental service. I had the worst customer experience while trying to book a car reservation with my corporate membership at this Hertz location. I have been a long time corporate member at Hertz and I have never received such poor engagement from management, until today. Steve Rubbo (spelling of last name may be incorrect), who claimed to be the general manager at this location had such subpar customer etiquette. My phone call with him, during an attempt to reserve a vehicle with my corporate account, was unhelpful and blatantly rude. If I could give it a 0 I would but that is not an option. Things you should know about me: I am a Gold Member/Presidents Club member with Hertz. In theory, if I rent a car before the HLE opens (which I did) my contract should be pre-printed, a car set aside, and all I have to do is show my drivers license. Is it a privilege? You bet ya! One I pay for with weekly rentals for work. Which is my today I arrived ahead of my pick up time, on a break from work, to pick up the rental. Instead I encountered a waiting area full of people, a stafd member haggling with a guy who did not like his car and wanted to pay in cash all, a shifting message - we have cars, we don't have cars, maybe we have cars - and a staff not particularly invested in good service, so I left. This is the closest Hertz from the New Haven train station. It's about a 10 min walk, so it's not bad. You're better off walking there than asking someone from Hertz to pick you up. There were two people working there and customer service was average as the lady was kinda slow and I wasn't sure what she's doing on her computer. It's about a 10 minute walk to this Hertz location which isn't terrible if you don't have bags, but chances are you will if you're arriving at Union Station. However, you can call the office and ask to be picked up. It usually takes about 5-10 minutes for them to get to you so you should call when you're about 5 minutes from the train station so you don't have to wait long. Service can by spotty as can the cars they give you. I'd reserved a mid-size car and ended up with the beast-like Lincoln Towncar as it was the only one they had with the NeverLost. It was only 2 years old, but looked much older and had between 50-60K miles. read more

However, the 3 people in the office, 2 women and 1 man, couldn't have been more professional and pleasant. They did their best to keep everthing moving and even maintained their sense of humor. The worst! I rented a compact car through my insurance. I told them I would need an suv for one day coming up. Sure, they said, just call. I needed it for Saturday. So on Thursday I called to reserve it. They didn't know if they would have an suv available on Saturday (why not- can't they get one? This is their business) but they would call me back. They never called. I called again Friday morning. This time they said the best plan was to call first thing Saturday. (Really? Call at their busiest time?) Okay so I call Saturday morning and they can't even confirm they have an suv because they have a lobby full of people (yeah, didn't see that coming). They would "call me back." Again. Again no call. I never got the suv I needed. The only reason they even get two stars is because the car I did have was fine - no issues with it. But the customer service! Absolute worst. read more

Rent a car for the weekend.Requested pick up/delivery service when I reserve the car online. I called 45 mins before reservation to remind them of the pick-up. Wait for 1 hr 40 min to have someone to get us. The driver said the hand-written phone number on the piece of paper he got was illegible. Late for almost one hour for our car rental. The office are tiny with about 4 counters. The car itself: clean on the exterior; the seat inside had some dirt, but it was ok. We didn't have problem with driving it. When we returned the car, we also asked for a service to drive us back. However, the lady in the front desk told us to talk to guy outside (around the garage). The guy outside told us to ask the lady in the front desk to drive us. They passed us around and no on wanted to do it after we have already paid all the fees. We were the only customer in office at that time, but they were *pretend* / maybe they were really busy doing something. We have to get a uber ourself in order to get back. Not happy. read more

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT rent from this location. I rent from Hertz 10-20 times a years and have never experienced customer service like this at any of the other locations I've rented from. First, they made me wait because they did not have any cars with GPS available, which I requested in my reservation. They finally get a midsize car with dings and dents all over it and a half tank of gas and send me on my 300+ mile journey. The car would shake terribly at 72mph and when it was going below 20mph it would feel like it was going to stall out. When I arrived at my destination the car leaked oil all over my families driveway. I called Hertz to exchange the car for a new one at the airport and they said no problem. After the 40 minute drive to the airport I discovered the airport location had closed early because it was Christmas. I left the car for dead at the airport, flew home and was charged the full price of the rental. I called the location to express my concerns and got manager Steve who asked me if a voucher would make me happy? I'm glad I paid for a service that ended costing me more money in the end because I had to buy a flight home. Management and customer service at this location is TERRIBLE. Pay the extra money and rent from a different location where you know you will get a car that will not break down. read more

Dropped off a car here before taking the train back to NYC. We had originally picked up the car in Hartford. Check out was fast plus they drove us to the train station. Not bad. Although, with the choice of cars I see available, probably shouldn't come here to pick up a car. The location pretty much looks like a junkyard. read more

I've been renting cars from this particular Hertz location for a few years now, and my experience with them has been constantly excellent. They are always friendly and I have never had any trouble with the cars I have rented. When I've called from the train station for a pick up they have been prompt and courteous. Be warned that this location is small so sometimes the wait can be more than a few minutes, this of course is not the employees' fault, just a fact of life. read more

Had no problem renting a car at this location and what I appreciated is that although they tell you that you need to make the reservation for someone to pick you up or drop you off, I dropped off the car and asked for the drop off service. My drop off was two towns away, about 15 mins, which is what is promoted on the website and was given a Lyft car. I really appreciated this since it was raining outside. Just because of this I would go back. Guess since I dropped off the car Monday morning it was not so busy and they accommodated my request. read more
