I was very surprised to see all these ratings for this Hertz location that were so poor. I have rented cars numerous times on trips to St. Louis and almost always had a horrible experience, renting from a nearby competitor who always seem to have the lowest prices. This was my first time using Hertz and from beginning to end it was the best experience by far that I have ever had renting a car from the airport area in St. Louis. Unlike my experience at other local rental agencies, this place was adequately staffed, and there weren't horrible, long lines. The car was what I expected. Bait and switch. I went in and gave the agent my President's Circle and reservation numbers. I was instructed to get a car out of the President's Circle. Upon exit, I was handed a new rental folio, and only after pulling through the exit gate did I realize I had been upcharged for a rental upgrade. This happened because the system at the gate and the employees in the office don't communicate. I did what I was told by the employees at the counter and at no point did the employee at the exit alert me that there was an issue with my rate. More so, they refused to even look at my President's Circle number when exiting. I wasted over 45 minutes of my night dealing with the employee at the exit and going back and forth to the desk. BEWARE. DO NOT USE THIS LOCATION. Today I've had a rather frightening experience with Hertz car rental of St. Louis airport location. I am in a Hertz rental vehicle from Springfield IL. I was having mechanical issues with my vehicle and called this location and the operator said they could help me. As soon as I arrived and try to discuss my concerns with the four people in the Lobby I was meant with straight Unprofessionalism. The four representatives in the lobby eventually said they could just switch out my vehicle which I tried to explain being a medical student I had a lot of supplies in the vehicle. I resorted to called the hotline and got my mechanical issue resolved, they told me to just drive around and find a mechanical person who could help me which I did and he was the only professional nice person there. After I tried to leave the property and was meant with resistance. As I was explaining my vehicle was from a whole other location which everybody saw me drive my vehicle into the lot. The man who lets you out repeatedly, told me to shut up and took my contract agreement from the Hertz in Springfield Illinois and would not give it back he also would not take my ID off my phone. He said two managers were coming, which I thought great the managers will understand. However, I was mistaken. A woman and man manager approach and told me that I was not going to be taking the vehicle. They told me they were going to be taking the vehicle that they had canceled out my driving contract. I panicked and had to call the police on them. The Police came and verified I was who I was saying to be and that the vehicle was in my name. I ended up, asking both the man and woman manager for their names which they said they will not give me their name. After this experience, I will never rent from Hertz again. Not sure if they are a antisemitic company, but I don't understand any other reason they would act like this. I will be following up with the district manager tomorrow. In case you have an early flight. They open their rental return at 4am even though all other sites state 6am. So that set me back an hour just trying to get ahold of any hertz employee at any location in the St Louis area for help. There wasn't even help on their linktree or customer service hotline. Extremely frustrating when you're trying to make a flight. If I were them I would update their conflicting times on all their sites and linktree. I also called 10 times from 6:30 am until 2:30pm and didn't get through until the 11th try. I would go to any other rental. I'm sure it will be less messy. read more

I wish there was a ZERO star. The customer service agent and manager (Devin) were the most unprofessional, unkind & unhelpful staff I have ever met. They could not, or would not, help with an error on booking or extra charges on receipt at time of rental and when assistance was requested, they refused rental of a car at that location. They literally snatched the rental receipt from my hand and threatened to call the cops. I have never in my life been around such unprofessional customer service staff. I have filed a formal complaint with Hertz and this Gold member will be using a new company moving forward. I'm hopeful that Hertz will reach out to make this right and that I can add an update to this review. If this is how their rental agents are allowed to treat customers, and how their managers resolve situations, this location is doomed. read more

Do NOT rent from this location. If you must, ASK FOR YOUR RECEIPT AS SOON AS YOU RETURN. I got charged a windshield repair fee of $175, there was NO DAMAGE to the car. I'm fact I told them that the usb outlet was loose. The employee (black male younger) who received the car did t say anything and we were there for a while unloading and waiting for the shuttle. I really don't remember much about my STL work trip because it was so mediocre, I just dissociated from the whole experience. One thing that stood out was the fact that I got to drive a pickup truck for the first time! I was staying only 10 minutes from Hertz so I figured I could make the drive. So much fun. Car Rental places can be a hit or miss, but I had a great experience at this location. I have been renting cars for a while so I am familiar with the process and I always take photos and videos when I pick up my car and right before returning. Always ask for receipts and ask questions!! The people at this location were friendly and accommodating. We had no issues getting to and from the airport. There were many cars to pick from and check-in and check-out went smoothly. I would definitely book from here again if I return to STL. read more

I took the shuttle from the airport to Hertz. There was no line, which was great, but it was as though the staffperson I dealt with had zero customer service experience. I didn't have the same credit card that I'd originally booked the car with, but she couldn't help me and I had to call a 1800 number for assistance - crazy! Hertz BBB Complaint Narrative September 19 2024 -I used the Hertz app online to make my rental car arrangements. Once I changed my return flight to Chicago from St. Louis, I went back on the Hertz app to change my reservation drop off to Chicago O'Hare. The app would not allow me to make this change. (Moment of Truth) -I arrived in St. Louis on Thursday night, August 29, approximately 10:45pm. I expected to see signs for Hertz Rental/Shuttle etc, and there were NONE. (Moment of Truth). All other Rental Car agencies had prominent displays for their service and shuttles running near the airport. Hertz had no signage on the sidewalk with all the other rental car agencies. No visible shuttles running. (Moment of Truth). How can Hertz be a leader in the rental car business and be the only rental car agency at St. Louis airport to have no signage and no shuttles running? -I called the general (national) Hertz Customer Service number and explained the situation; they put me on hold. Upon returning to the call, the service rep informed me that I was too late, and Hertz service at St. Louis Airport location would resume at 6am in the morning. (Moment of Truth). This was very stressful to hear. It turned out (thankfully) to be incorrect. -By chance and by luck, I stumbled onto another customer in a random upstairs parking lot (no signage) and asked him if he was waiting for a shuttle. He said he was waiting for Hertz, that he had the same problem locating Hertz following his flight, that he Googled the local Hertz location and phone number and had made arrangements for a shuttle to pick him up. This was purely a stroke of luck on my part to encounter this gentleman. -I took the shuttle to the Hertz St. Louis airport location to complete my reservation and pick up my car. I arrived at approximately 11:35pm. I explained my dilemma to the service agent - that I had the wrong drop off location on my reservation. The agent spent a few minutes attempting to change the reservation drop off location to Chicago O'Hare. She stated she was unable to change it, and that they would have to deal with it when I got to Chicago. (Moment of Truth) -Had I been able to change the reservation on the Hertz app, or had the reservation been amendable by the service agent at the Hertz St. Louis location (which either should be a no brainer), I would have been aware of the surcharge cost of $200 up front. This would have allowed me to make alternative plans, such as changing my flight back to St Louis as to not incur the $200 charge, or to research other rental agencies who might have more reasonable rates for different drop off locations. This decision-making process to avoid the $200 surcharge was not availed to me because Hertz failed to change the reservation, both disallowing it on the Hertz app, and disallowing the service rep to make the change. (Moments of Truth). -When I arrived at Chicago O'Hare, I Googled "Hertz Rental Return O'Hare" to get coordinates to drop off my vehicle. I followed the directions on Maps app on my phone. The directions lead me to some random ride share lot near the airport instead of the Hertz rental car drop off. (Moment of Truth). It took me another 20 minutes to locate the Hertz drop off location on my own. -When I dropped off my car, the service reps conferred about the location being different than what was on the contract (like I was some kind of criminal), and they slapped me with an unexpected $200 fee for the drop off location change (Moment of Truth). -I completed a survey at Hertz' request that was attached to my invoice. It documented some but not all of my negative experiences documented here. Hertz didn't bother to contact me about my experience. The Moments of Truth that I have articulated add up to a poorly designed customer service experience; and truly a 0 out of 5 rating for Hertz. Hertz is supposed to have a reputation as a trusted, dependable leader in the rental care business. None of what I experienced from start to finish contributed to a quality experience with Hertz. In my view, this is not Better Business, and the customer service was very poor from start to finish. Hertz has a lot of work to do to meet "Better Business" standards. read more

A bit confusing shuttle pick-up location (because it's not where other rental car shuttles are). No on-site agent to assist with pick-up / vehicle selection. Difficulty with check-in thru app / website. Exiting agent was unaware of posted vehicle pick-up signage. Only one exit line open at 6p, making for a longer (20 minute) wait to leave pick-up lot. And INCORRECT / FRAUDULENT charge for fuel when vehicle was returned with full fuel tank! As another review mentioned, GET YOUR RECEIPT AS SOON AS YOU RETURN before leaving the vehicle!! This Hertz location is convenient if you are traveling into St Louis Lamber International Airport. My only issue was some of the counter and vehicle personnel were not very proficient and efficient with there processes, so the vehicle checkout was a few minutes longer than it should have been. The shuttle pick up area was hard to find because they do not have a sign but we flew from southwest and we had to look for the sign that said "Rental Car Off Site pick up" I forgot what exactly it said but it was something along those lines. That is where you wait to get picked up from the hertz shuttle. Hertz Shuttle to the airport start running at 4am which was great because our flight was at 6am. Overall great experience I just wish they had a sign for the pick up area. Employees were nice. read more

Literally the worst car rental experienc. Extremely long line to get rental, charged for tolls per day which I did not want and did not realize was added. Tried calling once we reached the hotel an hour later to ask for this to be removed and was told that could only be done in person, of which there were no open locations near me at my destination. On return I was told even though they see I called, the daily toll charge cannot be removed. Yesterday I then receive notice two and a half months later that the car I rented was fined a red light violation. It is too far after for me to either acknowledge or refute which is really not an issue, but rather why I was not notified earlier. Hertz was also notified within two weeks on the red light violation and advised penalty fee would be $150 if paid on time (within one month). Now it is TWICE the amount as it was not paid on time and I am just now being notified. Unbelievable. I will NEVER use them again and will be sure to advise any one that will listen not to use them. read more

Hertz NEVER AGAIN! So today I got stranded in Evansville, IN as there are limited charging stations available between Lexington, KY & St Louis, MO. A good Samaritan helped with a portable charger but advised I should call roadside assistance to get a gas vehicle for my return trip. I did just that and was instructed to head to Lambert Hertz location for new vehicle. First rep said she was on her way out and didnt have time to do the exchange. Next rep advised manager Joshua that I was returning an EV vehicle Joshua said he was not exchanging an EV for gas. I advised that rep explained that there were vehicles available at this location. Joshua said I would need to make a reservation for his location to get a gas vehicle. So another $200 deposit and another rental charge for an additional vehicle despite the fact I had prepaid for this vehicle. I called customer service back who advised that there was nothing they could do and if I got another EV they would tow it to Louisville to be charged. Huh! Joshua needs some sensitivity training as well as the rest of his crew as I was here for a funeral and this drive which is 5 hours took 10 hours. read more

DO NOT BOOK HERE!!! You want to talk about a HORRIBLE experience renting a car. I had my reservation under a debit card. They wouldn't take it because I didn't have the card physically with me. Fine, I'll use a different one. They told me it would be a $500 hold and a soft credit check. (No thank you). I didn't have a credit card with me so they made me wait 4 hours in the lobby until my sister who was flying in could provide a credit card. Trash. No effort to help in any way. They can't do anything in store, everything is done by calling the customer service number that puts you on hold for 30 minutes. By the time I got a credit card in my possession the customer service center had closed and I would have to come back the next day to pick up the car. (I was only supposed to have the rental 1 day anyways) Never got my rental and ended up hitching a ride with my sister in a different car. Trash service. Trash policies. Never again. From pick up to drop off, the process was easy as could be. We took the shuttle from and to the airport. Both drivers were friendly and had great customer service. They even offered to adjust the temperature and gave area tips. We booked online as Gold Members. On arrival, our name was on the board, we grabbed a car from our section and we were on our way. On exiting, we were asked the standard questions, which shouldn't have happened since that info is pre-filled out on the profile. Hardly a deal breaker. I was less than impressed by this rental location. We reserved a compact car but was offered an economy, and told if we wanted anything bigger that we would have to pay for the upgrade. We had four people all with bags so we had no choice but to upgrade the vehicle. The vehicle we got had trash all over the trunk, dirt and stains all over the interior and had multiple dents and scratches around the front bumpers. I travel to the STL frequently to service Barnes Jewish Hospital and Hertz is my go-to rental car agency everywhere I travel. Most airports now have the rental cars onsite, however the STL is still old school where you need to take a shuttle ride to the agencies. No worries, just plan accordingly. The Hertz shuttle at this location are rolling in and out frequently and the driver's always have a smile and a story to share. I made a mistake using Hertz in ST Louis Airport. STICK WITH TURO. DO NOT USE HERTZ. Their business tactics are disgustingly deceptive. I was planning to extend my rental or upgrade to a Mustang or Infiniti as I was returning the car but the employee HAPPILY pointed out a rock chip in the windshield and happily announced that I owed $180. She screamed out, "Hey look! A rock chip!" She immediately got a yellow marker and made a gigantic circle around it. I have not even said anything and she pointed to my damages sheet noting that I did not identify the rock chip. I was kind of in shock at her reaction since I was intending to extend my rental or upgrade. Anyways, when I received the car from Hertz, it was at night and I could not find windshield chips. I focused on body damage because that was all I could see in the dark airport parking lot. Hertz should have a record of prior damages like Turo has. BUT EVEN IF, the rock chip was caused during my rental, there was ALREADY a prior rock chip which they simply just glued up. The repair should NOT cost $180 and there was no indication that there was cracking or that the windshield requires replacement. It is clear the company is scamming their customers when the employee looked so excited to find a rock chip so they can charge $200 per chip. AND the psycho still asked if I wanted to extend the rent or upgrade. That is just sociopathic. Just stick with TURO. It may not be as easy as Hertz because it depends on individuals and them responding, HOWEVER Turo has a record of damages photographed by prior renters. I expected Hertz to have a similar system, but it is clear they lack this system so they could squeeze out a $180 repair bill for any scratch or chip on their $40/day rental. When I fly into St. Louis for business about once a month - there are times when my company books me with Hertz based solely on price. How I wish it were otherwise. Maybe it is the seemingly overall lack of caring, or the rundown facilities at this location - but the customer experience at this Hertz is poor. This is surprising considering Hertz usually leads the pack in customer service and care. The shuttle buses are worn and give a bone rattling ride to and from the terminal - this is amplified by the poor state of the roads around the airport. Nonetheless - it begins with the little things and the smell of the shuttle buses begin to turn you against this experience immediately. Oh man. Where do I begin? I planned a trip back to St. Louis to visit family and I rented a car through Expedia to be picked up at the STL airport location. During the process of checking in, I was notified that I was on the "Do Not Rent" list. I had barely rented from Hertz before and there was no reason I should be on any list. They told me I had to call a specific number and after waiting on hold for over an hour and 15 minutes, I hung up. I contacted Hertz billing just to make sure there weren't any unknown charges attached my account and they confirmed there was nothing and they had no idea why I would be on that list. I left after 2+ hours of being there without a car. I called the "Do Not Rent" department again first thing the next day and finally got through to someone who confirmed I was NOT on that list. They did mention that my drivers license was expired in their system and I found out that my "issue date" was entered as my "expiration date". After then I was instructed to call the Loyalty Program office to update all my information (apparently almost everything entered by Hertz was incorrect in their system). I won't get deep into how rude Hertz corporate has been with all of this because that isn't applicable to this specific review about the STL airport location. What I've realized though after talking to multiple people at Hertz is it seems the issue started with the agents at this location entering in my drivers license information incorrectly. Mistakes happen, but there was no double checking? You don't think to go over what you just typed to make sure you didn't mess it up??? There wasn't even a sense of being compassionate about the situation. They don't even want to look you in the eye when you ask questions and I was never impolite when addressing them. The craziest thing of all is that you can't actually contact someone at this location. You are always routed to Hertz corporate. In the end, the whole thing was a mess and it all started with this location. I had to rent from a different company and will hopefully be picking that up later today. Messy. Crazy. Not acceptable. If I could give this location zero stars, I would. I rented a car from them this past weekend while mine was in the shop. I booked the car through Priceline and took their offered insurance coverage on the rental at $11 a day. When I arrived to pick up the car, the attendant asked me if I wanted to purchase Hertz coverage at $29 a day. I kindly declined and informed him that I had purchased coverage through Priceline. He then began addressing me in what I would refer to as an accusatory, bullying manor implying that I might damage the car and that if I did I would be liable. Fast forward to today when I returned the car- I had a family member waiting to meet me at this location to take me to the dealership who had taken off from a busy work schedule to drive me there. I parked the car and the attendant checked it out and handed me my receipt. I left not realizing until I made it to the dealership and picked up my car that I had left my keys attached to the key to the rental in the ignition of the car as well as my garage door opener. It had been less than an hour since I dropped off my car, so I immensely called the location and told them. A gentleman who did not identify himself expressed concern and told me that he would get somebody out to check the car. When I arrived, I had to wait to talk to anybody. Nobody at the extension I dialed previously would answer. Finally, an employee named "Derek" who would not provide his last name, went out to the car which had been parked to be rented again already and retrieved my garage door opener from the visor and said that there were no keys in the lost and found. Patiently, calmly, I asked him to check further as my keys had to be there. He repeatedly cut me off mid speech, raised his voice and yelled at me in front of other customers waiting to pick up cars, stating that I had obviously lost my keys, which had definitely been left in the car and that they didn't have them. When he didn't offer any other options other than to check with the attendants also checking in cars, he walked off. With nobody around recognizable from the time I dropped off my car, I tracked this "Derek" individual down again and asked to speak with a supervisor. He informed me that he was the supervisor and again declined to provide me with his last name or any other option for assistance other than to go check the parked car I had rented for myself. THE WORST!!! The fact that they are off site to the airport and only have a shuttle approximately every 1/2 hour is the good part. The agents at the desk inside the Hertz Rent-a-Car are rude and clearly have no idea what customer service should be. I rented a car two weeks ago and my daughter went last week to for the same. They wouldn't help her. They made her stand there for 30 minutes on HOLD while three agents sat there DOING NOTHING claiming they were unable to help. I noticed the attitude of the agent, and it was not as one would expect in the Midwest. Finally... the phone agent canceled the first reservation and then began a new one which was way more expensive than the first.
