After booking online with another agency in town and receiving a call that there were no rental cars available (Spring Break), my husband called Hertz and confirmed that they DID have a car available, and was told to book online, which he did. He had to put in a time for the reservation, so he put 11:00 AM. However, it took me a while to get in touch with my ride, who had to do something first, so I got to Hertz at 3:00. We walked into the agency and there was one woman sitting at a desk in the back. She greeted us and said something else that I couldn't make out so I started back toward her and she said "I SAID Someone will be with you soon" (or something to that effect) I guess that didn't sink in/slow me down quickly enough because, seeming alarmed, she repeated SOMEONE WILL BE WITH YOU SOON. Not sure if I appear threatening or what but ok. A fellow was unloading stuff out of a car in the parking lot and after a good little while he came in and sat down at another desk and indicated he was available to help. However, he informed me that since I did not show up at 11:00 AM they had rented the car to someone else (To quote "Seinfeld," "You know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation!"). He added that they did not have any other cars available, I asked if any were due to be returned and he checked and said not until after 5:00 (they close at 5:00). I told him that my husband had specifically called to make sure there was a car on site. He said, "Sorry, I don't know who he talked to, I just got here a little while ago." Since I had out of town weekend plans this was obviously very frustrating and disappointing. Won't be back. read more

This was the most HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE RENTAL EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. RUN, DO NOT WALK, DO NOT RENT FROM THIS POOR EXCUSE OF A BUSINESS. I reserved a 3 row SUV 1-month prior to a 1-week trip. I even prepaid for the use of this vehichle. I got to the business, there were 2 other customers there waiting to pick up a vehichle. There was only 1 person working there. The other customers had been waiting for 1 hour and 30 minutes. By the time I had secured a car, I had waited for 1 hour 17 minutes. DO NOT EXPECT TO JUST WALK IN AT YOUR APPOINTED TIME AND GET A VEHICLE. What was even worse is that when I finally was able to sit in her chair to be assisted, she then informed me that she didn't have a vehichle for me, other than a little car. I reserved a 3-row SUV because that is what I needed. She finally, after many harsh words, asked her manager about how to resolve the issue. She said they had a larger vehicle, but it would be a $40/day upgrade if I wanted to rent that. I refused to accept that resolution because I had already paid and reserved an SUV 1 month ago. So the manager said to give like or better value at no extra cost. So, I finally had a vehicle identified, but wait, it gets worse. I still needed to sign the contract and then go out and see the vehichle. Because it was a newer vehicle (1 year old) it had many bells and whistles. I asked her how to park, brake, move and adjust the seats, and work the a/c, stereo, navigation system, windshield wiper blades and lights. She said, oh, I'm not sure about all of that new stuff, you will just have to figure it out. It's probably like a lot of other vehicles. There is a manual in the glove box. Wow!!! why didn't I think of that? So when I picked up the "van" it was SOOOO NASTY inside. It had not been detailed. It smelt like smoke, which I am highly allergic to. It had children's feet marks on the backs of seats, chips, cookies and other trash in the floor and seats. Before I could even take my trip, I detailed the inside of the car, cleaned the inside and outside windows so that I could see out of them. I vaccumed the carpet and interior. There were no mats in the floorboards so the floorboard carpet was well worn, stained, frayed and coming up. This was only a 1 year old car. Once past all of the nastiness, I was able to pack for my trip. It did handle very nicely and got great gas mileage. That was about the only plus of this whole trip rental. When it comes to the contract and signing for something sight unseen, that was not so smart. Finally, I was picking up the car, after waiting about an hour, the lady did all of the computer work without letting me see anything that I was agreeing to. She took my credit card for putting a "$200 REFUNDABLE HOLDING fee" on it, printed out the contract, had me sign it BEFORE I even saw the car, or even saw the condition or the inside of the car. After I signed for the car, she quickly stuffed the receipt into a little folder. I did not look at the contract until I got outside to get the car. The contract said that the gas volume was 100% full. When I pointed out that the tank was NOT full, she told me to take a picture of where the level was in the car and not to worry about it. Just bring it back at the same level. I did that. It was a little bit more than about 50% full at pick up. In the store, she had said that if I wanted to pay for the "gas fill up" protection and not fill it back up on return, it would be $2.38/ gallon. That was NOT the case. When returning the car, it was a different lady checking the car back in. That lady said that the computer indicated that the tank was 100% full at pick up. On return, she recorded that it was returned at 90% full... So I was charged a $10.99/ gallon gas service fee. I pointed this out at check out and she said sorry I can't make any corrections or do anything about the bill, I have already closed out your ticket so you will have to call the billing department at the National customer service phone number to dispute the extra $90 charge. She kept saying, "I can't do anything for you. You will have to call the customer service line." Oh goodie, just one more thing I will need to do to finalize returning a car. When I called the number, it was this LONG phone tree that you had to use an automated assistance agent. After 45 minutes of going around and around with the telephone system, I finally was able to speak with a live person in "indonesia" or somewhere outsourced in a foreign land. I think I got the gas part resolved, but now, within a month, I should get the bill for the toll-road "ez pass" used while on my trip. According to the website, if you leave the box open, you will be charged one useage fee but, If you leave the box closed, you will be charged for each toll. Went to this Hertz to get a reserved Pick-up truck at 10 AM. No truck. I needed a pick up not an SUV. This office is very busy but the Gentleman who assisted me was very helpful. Got my truck at 2 PM a giant Dodge Ram 2500. Gas guzzler. Ok, so far the day started to look up. The truck had an abnormal gas amount which was a little more than ¼ tank, say 5/16 , but way less than half. Even took photos. Did not really worry as I added enough gas to get the vehicle back and satisfy the 5/16 full tank. It was about 6/16 but not quite 1/2 a tank. Did think much of it until I dropped it off to a the reservationist present. I gave her the keys and asked three times, " Anything else I need to do?" Answer was no and third NO was clearly made. Ok I leave and receive my receipt via email AND, I get hit for 2 gallons of gas for $23.85!!! Ok no biggie, I'll call, and resolve this - NOPE! You get an automated bot that puts the onus on YOU! Yup you have to prove with receipts that you purchased gas. Well, I thought if I could get someone in the office I could clear this up. After five tries, one try the phone rang 15 times, the woman who received the truck finally answered and placed me on a "short hold" - 38 minutes!!!! Then I was disconnected. This is still not resolved and I'm stoping payment and as of now taking my future business to Budget/Avis or Enterprise. Twenty bucks is twenty bucks because I put over 15 bucks of gas in that behemoth so we're talking 35 plus dollars! My car was in the body shop for repairs so I needed a rental. I went with Hertz because it was a name I recognized and because they seemed to have good rates. The car I got smelled bad inside and had Carpet pulling away from the door sills. I didn't complain about it because I needed transportation to and from work. The online quote I was given for my one week rental broke down the charges and showed a daily rate of $32.90. I asked at the time I took delivery of the car if I would be given that same rate if I needed to extend a day or two and was told yes. Lo and behold I had to extend the rental and the new daily rate came to $57.80 per day. I was given incorrect information. When it came time to return the car I filled up the gas tank until the pump clicked off and then kept clicking a few more times to make sure the filler neck was full. I drove the car 4 miles from the gas station to home and the next morning 6 more miles to turn in the car. They tried to charge me an additional $21 for fuel saying it wasn't full! This car was a Chevy Malibu with a 1.5L engine. It gets over 30 MPG and there is no way I burned $20 worth of fuel before it was turned in. when I got to Hertz to return the car there was only one person there and she had a customer at her desk and was on the phone as well. She asked me if I was returning a car and I said yes. She asked for the key and said that's all I needed to do. Didn't want to look over the car to verify the full tank of gas or for any damages. The emailed receipt I got was a surprise with the fuel charge. Seems shady to me. I was already home when I got the email and I tried to call the store, no answer. All I got was automated messages telling me to submit a gas receipt time stamped and dated just prior to returning the car. I didn't have one because the gas pump was out of receipt paper like they usually are so submitting for a refund online was out. I suspect that to be the case for most people so Hertz gets to keep a lot of unfair fees that way. The customer service I got was terrible. I sincerely wish I had gone with Enterprise instead of Hertz. They would have also provided transportation to and from the body shop as part of their service. When my husband and I arrived to pick up the pre-reserved vehicle at Hertz, the representative failed to share the additional fees that was required for an additional driver until AFTER my card was billed for the agreed upon charges. After learning about the multiple other fees (after my card was swiped for the agreed upon charges), I asked if I could cancel the purchase, but I were told my card was already billed. If I knew about the additional fees, I simply would have declined the entire purchase. I felt this practice was deceptive and this incident has broken my trust with the corporation. read more

I had to go into this location due to my contract expiring and I had initially rented in Texas. I have been in the rental for 2 months and this would be my 3rd month. However, no one ever stated there is a 62 day limit on a personal rental. I'm traveling with my job and since I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any problems I rented a vehicle. Unfortunately, the initial location I rented from in Texas has closed down till December 31. Nobody knows why. There is now an error on my account and no one knows how to access the file for another week extension till I go home. I will say Mitch and the individuals at this location went out of their way to help. Although the issue is still unresolved, this office has gone above and beyond their responsibilities to help with it. Not quite sure why it happened, but the initial renting location closed, my entire acct disappeared. We rented a small SUV and was given a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Nor great with the gas prices. It was comfortable but not clean. We returned it on time, vacuumed and sanitized. Once we got home we realized we forgot our EZ PASS tag on the front windshield. We called and were put on hold then hung up on. Called again and again. Finally a female answered the phone and said she needed to talk to the manager about the situation, but he was there. After multiple additional calls the manager called back 2 days later. The call went to voicemail. I called back immediately. I was told the manager was NOT there. The jeep was turned in on Monday 1/15. It's 1/19 and the still hasn't called. Our EZ PASS TAG INFO WAS CHANGED LESS THAN 30 MINUTES AFTER WE DROPPED OFF THE JEEP. Buyer BEWARE !! This leaves me to believe this NOT an HONEST business. read more

I clearly failed to read The return date of my rental. I brought it back a day late. I was like I wouldn't have made it there day before because I was sun drained. I don't know how Hertz does it, but they saved me almost half of what was priced on the Internet. This location is a smaller place and there's not many vehicles to choose from. I'm not sure where they park all of their vehicles either. However, the staff is very friendly and able to work with you on whatever you need. It's on the right side of Peters Creek Parkway as you come from south to north towards I-40 near Graybar. read more

Here is my experience with Hertz in Winston Salem NC. I rented a car with no issues the first time. I did overhear a conversation with a customer and a representative while I was returning that vehicle and observed that they don't charge everyone a deposit of $500. Ok, no problem. If you are inconsistent then you are inconsistent. The next time I needed a rental car I went back to them and I had to go to a different location and this time my not having a credit card was an issue. K already had to delay my trip one day because they have these bizarre rules...this one being that I had to wait 24 hours if I want to use a debit card instead of a credit card. This next time I was absolutely crucial. It was so important to get to my destination but on the day of the rental I could not rent a car because suddenly they decided to run my credit and I was out of luck at the very last moment with no solution. I am not leaving anything out here. This is exactly how it went down. You cannot count on Hertz to be consistent and reliable. You suck Hertz. You absolutely suck at what you do! read more

Reserved a rental online on 6/16/2020. Went to pick up on 6/17/2020. First issue was there were 3 employees & only one even acknowledged me. Second issue - The man who finally helped me took a call in the middle of helping me and instead of putting that person on hold, he had a 10 minute conversation. Third issue - I was denied renting a car because my credit score wasn't high enough. Even though I handed him my debit card with $4K in the bank. Did I mention all 3 employees were African American with 2 other African American customers waiting. I am Caucasian. December 16, 2021 Hertz Car Rental 2731 Peterscreek Parkway Winston Salem, NC 27127 To Whom it May Concern, I wanted to share an experience we had with Hertz this past weekend that will ensure you have a customer for life. Driving home to Maryland the evening of Friday December 10, 2021, my friend and I hit a deer on Highway 77. We were near the Mt. Airy exit and the tow truck towed us to a hotel which appeared to us to be in the middle of nowhere. The people were very friendly and were told this was the town of Mayberry. We were trying to make it to Hagerstown Maryland to take gifts to my grandchildren who rarely get to share time with their beloved Grandmother...me. We woke up Saturday the 11th we were told by all the local car rental that there would be no available rental cars until Wednesday of the following week! Panic started to sit in. We contacted the Hertz Rental in Winston Salem and spoke with a wonderful representative Dakota. He showed empathy and was very concerned. Dakota assured us he would have a car for us. I pleaded did he know anyone who could come get up. He said there were only 2 Hertz employees working that day and that no one could come pick us up. Minutes later Dakota contacted us and said that Kirby had agreed/volunteer to come get up!! Like a angel from heaven Kirby picks us up in a large vehicle which was able to accommodate all our gifts. Kirby had no idea we had the cargo that we did. Kirby was so kind and considerate, and we enjoyed our ride to Winston Salem. We rented our vehicle and continued our journey to Maryland where my grandchildren and family awaited us. We arrived at the hotel in the evening ordered food, played Christmas and were able to celebrate not only the Christmas holiday but survival and the joy of life. Caution when renting. They have changed their debit card rental policies.I was left with no rental and a shrug today thanks to then now requiring AAA or similar. I have rented in the past despite inattentive service and less well-maintained vehicles because of availability but learned my lesson today. Should have stuck with other agencies. read more

The staff were very friendly, but the cars were dirty inside and out. We looked at three different cars trying to find something reasonably clean. One had pet hair all over the seats and the other two were dirty and stunk of cigarettes. This is our first bad Hertz rental experience. I had a reservation at the airport. I called to make sure they had a car. Sent to a voicemail box that was full. I ubered there and not only did they not have my car. They couldn't tell me when one would be available or even if I could get one that day. I offered to leave if they could get me car in the morning and they could not guarantee that either. They did not offer to get me one or take me to another location. I had to uber back and my hotel due to a banquet I was speaking at and waste 40. That night I called an online number and was promised one in the morning for sure. I was about to leave the hotel and the location manager said they didn't have one. I called another location and ended up paying more than my reservation even though I now only had the car for 6 hours instead of 24. At first he wanted to charge me $380 for my now 6 hour reservation (my reservation was for a full-size at $49.) I was able to get a midsize for about $75 but did not want to argue for feel of not getting in the car. Then he gave me someone else drivers license. She happened to be there collecting that license for her father that they didn't give to him to days earlier. He almost wasn't aloud to fly as he did not have his license) I gave it to her and asked for my license. The salesmen then argued about who had my license till one found it in his pocket. Unbeleivable experience. When I calm down I will be posting this all over social media. I understand problems happen but you are vulnerable when traveling and to offer no solutions and only problem after problem is just wrong. I made arangemtns to sight see a place I will never be back to and instead almost missed my plane. I was treated like I was crazy for expecting to be in the car I reserved or or even having the original reservation price or car choice met. I hope people read this and do not let themselves get into this situation. Finally the online and public numbers for Hertz have no option for customer service or an unmet reservation. The options are for billing or a broken-down car. I could get a call center but no one who had any power to fix or help out in my situation. I rented a car from the Peters Creek Pkwy, Winston Salem, NC location. They charged my card for an additional day after the agent informed me that the car could be dropped off anytime that Sunday (while the office was closed), by dropping the key in the drop box. When I called Hertz customer service, the 1st rep told me you are automatically charged an additional day when the drop off location is closed when you return the car. I told her the agent at the location knew they were closed on Sunday, but told me what to do and I would not be charged for an additional day. Then her manager gets on the phone and lies to me saying the location has video cameras recording when people drop keys in the drop box. I called the location and ask them if they had cameras recording the drop box, they laughed a said absolutely not. We have no idea when the car is dropped off, but as long as the car is in the parking lot and the key is in the box when we open, there is no additional day charged. Then she proceeded to give me the sob story that they can't make any changes to bills and charges at the location, so I had no other choice but to go back through customer service managers who did nothing but said I'm sorry, but we are not removing the charge for the additional day. read more

I've been using this location for years and they've always had excellent service from beginning to end. The staff is really nice. However, I'm not sure what changed over the last few months but it has been my worst experiences with Hertz. I understand the location is under new management and I don't know if that's it or what. I have made 4 reservations between September and November and each time I have left without a vehicle. The first time I was told it was my fault because of a card issue (the same card I've used at the location the past two years), the 2nd and 3rd time they had no cars available (even though my reservation was made days in advance...and I'm a presidential gold member!), the last time I made the reservation the day before and when I arrived there were no cars ready, two hours later I left even though they assured me that a vehicle was on its way. I put a formal complaint in with Hertz Corporate and hopefully there's an alternate way to use my points (hotel, flights, etc) so that I can cut ties with the company.
