I am extremely disappointed with how I was treated by Hertz in San Luis Obispo. I took the time to write a respectful and detailed letter to management regarding a serious concern about possibly being placed on a block list, hoping for communication, clarification, and professionalism. Unfortunately, my letter was completely ignored. No response, no follow-up, no acknowledgment whatsoever. What makes this especially frustrating is that basic customer service and professional courtesy should include at least responding to a customer who took the time to address concerns respectfully. Silence and avoidance only make the situation appear even more unprofessional and poorly managed. I understand businesses can make decisions, but completely ignoring customers instead of communicating transparently is unacceptable. I expected much better from a company with the reputation Hertz claims to have. Very disappointed in the management and overall handling of this situation at the San Luis Obispo location. I have rented from Hertz San Luis Obispo no less than 5 times over the last 3 years. Every time I arrive I get fantastic service while waiting for my luggage. Most recently I had Ariana who was able to get me checked in and my keys less than 5 minutes. I have also had Paige and Rosanna before and have had the same experience with them. Had a great experience at hertz. They're always my go-to place when renting a car. I didn't catch the lady's name when I checked in (long blond hair) she was so sweet & helpful. Very genuine and gave me some tips the next time I rented in slo. Quickest check out process ever, I got the keys right away. Easy to find my car, it was a really nice 2024 Hyundai Elantra- so fun to drive and great on gas! When I returned the keys there were 2 guys who greeted me, they were funny, detailed explaining the check out process and quick. I highly recommend this place. Honesty, customer service, professionalism,and politeness!!!! Upon return of a rental vehicle, we were immediately accused of creating damage to the UNDERSIDE of the right front fender. A scratch so minor and inconspicuous that only one with prior knowledge of it existence would have noticed. In my opinion, a scratch created by road debris. The agent said she spotted it as she left her office, even prior to performing her review? Immediately asking if we had obtained insurance? She explained that the scratch was consist with damage created by a curb when parking. I explained to the agent that we never parked near a curb, we always parked heading into a parking space as my wife will not park any other way. She became indignant and was not at all understanding or accepting of our views. A customer witnessed the exchange and walked out, stating to us outside that she would never rent from Hertz ever again, offering to write a letter on our behalf, and left for the Budget agency nearby! This whole family then was told they had to Uber not use courtesy van to the train station. I decided not to risk renting a car while mine being repaired. Negative stars for me on here, if it were possible. I got to Hertz after being picked up from the dealership. When I arrived, the blond was the one to first "help" me. First incident: I was sitting scrolling for the payment, I thought I had been charged from Hertz previously. I couldn't find it and had mentioned this to her. I asked if she needed my debit card... She just stared at me. I asked again if she needed a debit card and she replied with "well I need a debit card and your license if you want a rental car". I was SHOCKED. The attitude that came from this girl was extremely uncalled for. Second incident: I was asked to sign the papers, showing my charges. I was told it was supposed to be $120 which she had shown me prior and then next to my signature part it says $160. I asked about the charge that would have been next to my initial. She stares at me and then looks down at the paper and goes "once again like I had mentioned" blah blah blah..... this is when I asked her if she was ok. Her lovely response was "are you ok". I had mentioned that she had an attitude for some reason I couldn't understand why. She didn't have much of a response for that one. Third incident: she has me as a paper showing the Volkswagen Jetta that they were renting out to me, had no damage. I asked to see the keys so I could check the inside as well, which I do for any and all my vehicles for documentation purposes. She refused to give me the keys and said she would unlock it when I got to the car. Well.... I'm sure you can guess what happen when I walked all the way out to the car... she refused to unlock it for me. So I went about recording the outside condition of the car which indeed had at least 3 to 4 different damaged areas. So I recorded it and went back to show her. As I'm showing her the video, she proceeds to ask me what side the damages were on. When I asked her to go outside and mark them off, she refused to do that. She said "you can go do that, Im not going to". I let her know that this was her job and not mine and I'd appreciate it if she went out there and mark the damages that were on the Volkswagen that they were trying to rent me. Again, she refused to do it. Her next response was "do you want a car rental or not". I couldn't take anymore disrespect from this little girl. So I walked outside and got the lady with dark hair that had helped me a week earlier. She was so sweet and accommodating. I asked her if that blond girl had been there well and unfortunately, she had said yes, so I'm thinking this will need to be addressed to corporate now. After reading other reviews it's good to know this girl/kid must have a stick up her a$$ 24/7 and it wasn't just me to experience this unneeded outburst. This needs to be address ASAP and get taken care of or you guys will more then likely go under as a business due to terrible customer service due to one little girl getting a little too mouthy. Upon the recommendation of my significant other, we called Hertz to verify our reservation for a car with pickup set for July 9, 2021. The original reservation was made in January 2021. We called this Hertz location we were picking up from directly. The representative we spoke with told us someone had called and cancelled the reservation on July 5. When we questioned Hertz in regard to who had cancelled the car (since neither of us had called Hertz to cancel) the representative responded "the cancellation came from central reservation." She then told us they did not have the car we reserved and would not provide any alternative vehicles, other than providing the number for Avis. I continued to ask who cancelled the reservation and she kept attempting to gaslight us and explain to us how we had cancelled the reservation. Rather than find a solution she then hung up on us. The fact we reserved the convertible for an affordable price months in advance, coupled with the fact Hertz had no convertible, leads me to believe Hertz merely cancelled our reservation without any notice and rented the convertible to someone else for a higher price. This forced us to rent the car for a higher price since it was last minute. These shady business practices are beneath even the lowest snake oil salesman. read more

The first girl who checked me into my rental was so nice. But the girl today 12/22/22 when I dropped off was extremely rude for no reason. I called ahead, around 12PM and asked if there would be a shuttle available at 3PM, was told yes, I get there at 3PM and no shuttle. The girl at the counter told me "it's a courtesy we don't need to be here for you" instant jump to attitude out of the blue. I was shocked. And she continued to be caddy and rude until I left. I needed a rental car while my own was being repaired. A dude had run into it in a parking lot and actually left a note (what??!!). Last honest man. His insurance paid for the rental. When I went to pick it up they didn't have it ready so I had to wait. I asked if I could get a free upgrade because of my AARP membership. The woman says, "it's already an upgrade." It was supposed to be the equivalent of my own car but it was a rinky-dink Kia piece of crap. It was a complete downgrade and it sucked having to drive it all week. The car had clearly not been cleaned. There was a kid toy in the trunk and an unopened package of bonus Oreo's (yes, I did eat them!). There was also the previous driver's rental contract. But what really pissed me off is that the tank wasn't full. Hertz charges more than $10/gallon if they have to top it off. I filled it up myself before returning it but this meant that I paid for more gas than I used. I had to return it at the airport because the office across the street closes at 5 pm. At the Hertz counter in the airport I mentioned to the young woman working there that the car hadn't been cleaned and the tank wasn't full. She stared at me for a sec and the walked away. She literally said nothing to me and started inputing into her computer terminal. After a minute or 2 of getting the silent treatment I said, "so, is there anything else you need from me?" I'm not sure how long she would have just left me standing there. I finally said, "well, I guess I'm done here" and turned to leave. She called out, "did you fill the tank?" as I was walking away. I cannot understand why there are negative reviews for both the Hertz locations on Broad St. and the Airport. I was treated as if I were a VIP. The employees are very professional, friendly, and courteous. I was given a clean, attractive, and economical car that suited my needs perfectly. I also rented a Hertz car at the Truckee, CA airport to travel one-way to San Luis Obispo and was given an upgrade to a Land Rover at no extra cost because there was a request for it in San Luis Obispo. It was the most comfortable car I have ever driven and was well appreciated during the 6 hour trip in the heat on the 5. I have never had such outstanding service in a lifetime of traveling. Returned car today. This is 2nd car with problems I have rented from San Luis Obispo office recently. Poor car prep there. A I picked this car up at closing time on Friday, and they were closed for the weekend, I had no choice but to use the car as is. There were papers from previous renters and a cheap pair of sunglasses in the glove box. There was a candy wrapper in the driver door pocket. This car had a jammed or broken latch on the rear seat behind the driver. I could not release the seat to lay it flat, which made it very difficult to load our gifts, etc for the holiday. The worst problem was that the shoulder seatbelt was caught behind the latch, and could not be used at all. We ended up up unable to use the car to take my mother and her caregiver to family events, and had to use her old car instead. Which I was hoping to avoid by renting from a supposedly reputable firm like Hertz. I wrote a note about the problem and gave it to the agent at San Luis Obispo. She didn't seem to care, and didn't appear to read it. Even worse: I tried to email exactly the above info to Hertz, and their system would not accept it because of a keyword fault. I can understand why they have such poor reviews. I have never experienced such poor customer service in my life. We got a vehicle from them that wouldn't start the next morning (which the manager said was our fault) and when we finally got it started and returned it they wanted to charge us for the gas. I would have been happy to fill up the gas if I convinced I wouldn't have then been stranded at a gas station. bottom line, worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. I am a presidents club member with hertz and rent cars all over. My company has a contract with Hertz so I use them usually. I have never had a single good experience with Hertz SBP. I have received erroneous charges and they refuse to help. They are a franchise, so Hertz corporate will not step in. They have no drop box for after hours drop off. They have a terrible selection of cars and have been very rude and unprofessional. If I need to rent from SBP, I now use Avis and explain to my accounting team that that Hertz is essentially not available at this location. read more

I rented a car on 15 March for one way to LAX. I had a coupon for $100 off. They charged me $32.00 on 21 March. On 25 March they credited my account $32.00 On 25 April they charged my account $100. This place is horrific. It is a licensee with the Hertz corporation and thus if you call up Hertz they can't even see into their system to verify reservations, etc with them. Since this location is only open 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, it mean that if you're trying to contact them on the weekend or evening, you are flat out of luck. And speaking of that 5pm close time, they fully mean it. They will flat out leave you out in the cold. I called them at 4:50pm telling them I was on their way and to stay open if I was a minute or two late. Luckily I pulled up at 4:59pm with them already shutting the lights and getting ready to lock the door. I asked the woman working there what she was doing, that I had called to let her know, and she dead panned, "I told you on the phone we close at 5pm". Customer service here is horrendous, and she seemed upset that I actually had arrived by 5pm. Another customer walked up at 5:02 and the woman refused to let her in, just flat out telling her that they closed at 5pm. She "kindly" drove her across the street to the airport, since she apparently had to take my rental back that way for some reason. They also told me that they stop shuttling people to places at 4:30, so when I dropped my rental off with them and needed a ride to the auto body shop where my car was being worked on, they refused to give me a ride, literally a mile or two around the corner. we rented a car from hertz on broad street in san luis obispo,ca when we got there we asked about smoking in the car, they said they will charge $400 extra, it didn't matter the people we were with are non smokers so when we smoked we walked away, before we left my husband noticed a chip in the windshield and went back in and told them, they said we wouldn't be charged. They also took a $200 deposit which we haven't received back yet but i will be calling them in the next couple days to get that back. When we returned the car the rep said she smelled smoke in the car and we told her no we didn't smoke in the car and we could prove it, after 20 minutes of arguing and not wanting our witness she let us go, but said we can never rent from them again, LIKE WE WOULD, as we were walking out the door she flipped us off, WOW SO PROFESSIONAL we knew when we came back they were gonna try and get us for smoking, cause we admitted being smokers............don't worry HERTZ keep us on your list we will never rent from you again we rented the car from sept 2 thru the 7th 2021 read more

She overcharged me for the rental and then said that I had to an additional $100 because the car was dirty. It was not dirty, just some soil and crumbs on the floor. So, to make a long story short...was in a car accident. Not my fault, but the other parties fault. Vehicle needed to be fixed, the other person's insurance company rented me a vehicle from this place. My car is a Honda CRV. The reservations were made incorrectly by the insurance company to begin with. Beginning of problems. So, after we dropped my car off to get fixed my husband called to let Hertz know we were in the way. They had a Nissan XTerra. Popped the back open and it was filthy. I can't tell you the last time it was cleaned. Opened the doors and it had been vacuumed. I was going to be late for work, so I placed all my stuff and my sons belongings in the passenger backseat. As I'm driving I'm noticing all the dust, dirt and filth in the car. I ran my hand in the area of the hand rest and it had all the above plus small rocks covering it that hurt my fingers as I brushed it away. Call my husband to tell them I want a new car. This is the only SUV type they have. I can't pile kids backpacks and sports gear into a small compact car they have, so I'm stuck at the moment. Now calling insurance company to tell them to get me a car from another place. So, skip this place. Find somewhere else to rent locally. read more

They did not give me a car with a full tank of gas, as they claimed they did. I drove exactly 37.8 miles from the airport to dinner and then home (this was a loaner car from the car dealer that had to keep my car over night to finish my brake job) when I filled the tank with gas at the closest gas station it took 5.653 gallons of gas just before returning it the next day. The car dash said it was getting 21.8 miles per gallon, times that by the 5.653 I put in is 122.08 miles worth of gas. I drove 37.8 miles the speedometer proved that, my gas receipt prove how much I put in their car. They would not pay me for the discrepancy I was offered a $15 credit for the next time I rented a car, I don't rent cars so they were offering me NOTHING as I told Vice President Rental Operations person. They just made and extra $15. off of me, how many more people do they do this to? She even tried to blame me by saying that she did not know what I did with the car in the las 20 hours that I could have left it running and idling to use up 4 gallons of gas, I told her that she was calling me a liar she said no she was not that she did not know what I had done to lose that gas. . . it seems like a trick that they may play there. . . If I had not filled the tank they would have charged me $9.99 per gallon $56.37 had I only put in the 1 3/4 gallons that I had use then the would have charged me for the remaining 3.9 gallons at 38.99 so I was screwed either way. The Vice President Rental Operations person called me a liar and also called the service manager at the dealer a liar when I asked her why her story seeded to keep changing about how and why they could not pay me the $15. . . . The whole problem now is the ethical fact that the I was called a liar when I have proof that I am not and to call there service manager a liar to cover her ass. What she does not realize is that when the dealer rents a car for a customer and they rent a lot of cars from this Hertz for their customers that they are an extension of the dealers service and as such should not be calling the dealers customers liars or the dealer. This Hertz is a primely owner and operated franchise so they must think they can get a way with crap because it is an airport rental people fly in and out never to be seen again. Although the web says they rent to 20 year olds this is NOT true all the time. I phoned the 800 line to double check on this and they assured me there would be no problem. Now I am sitting on hold 15min+ because no one wants to speak to me. Twice in the AM I phoned and talked to representatives about renting a vehicle for my 20 year old as her vehicle is in the shop to get painted because a repair shop dripped battery acid on her paint job. I was assured both times she could rent a car. I made a reservation, gave AAA info, her credit card info. She went to the Broad St location and was told no way. They don't care what corporate says or does they are NOT renting to a 20 year old. Also, don't bother trying the airport location they won't rent to a 20 year old either. I was given a car without any walk through and it had something hanging underneath dragging on the ground from the under carriage, which I discovered upon my arrival home with it. When I returned it the next morning, prior to my trip, and requested another vehicle they asked if I had been in an accident with their car. They called the airport location and gave me a Nissan Sentra. The attendant who brought it over gave the counter manager a funny look and asked if she wanted a different car. She said that one was fine. I asked for a walk-thru since it was not done the first time and was told they only note damage when the vehicle is returned, so they don't do that anymore. What?! Liability issues! I drove the Nissan to LA and it was running hot, I noticed a puddle underneath the car and after checking under the hood found the coolant empty. I contacted roadside assistance and they sent me to the nearest Hertz location in Eagle Rock. They were amazingly nice and helpful! However, the car I had been given to drive in SLO was not on their fleet list, meaning it was likely pulled for repairs. So my conclusion is that the Hertz agency at 4554 Broad Street in San Luis Obispo not only lacks customer service, but clearly does not care anything about their clients' safety.
