If I could give 0 stars, I would. This rating is more for their policies than the man who helped me at the desk. He was very nice but did not explain much of except for the original price that I paid for online. Once the vehicle was returned, my once total of $198 became $293 and some change. No explanation whatsoever on what the fees were from. I returned it at said time at the right date and location. Also, I received the car with half a tank in which I took a photo with a time stamp of the gas gauge. I immediately called Avis to inform them that the tank was not full upon pick up and needs to be noted or I be reimbursed if needed. The man made a note and I was told to return it half a tank as well. I returned it with a little over half a tank! I emailed asking for an explanation of the charges and I received no help or reply. Never have I ever had these extra charges from any other company even at different airport locations. I rented 2 cars, one going North and then 1 for the return home trip. The first car was dirty on the inside and we had to clean the inside as well as the outside windows just to see. The 2nd car I rented was a car in SF. The car only had a half tank of fuel and was dirty on the inside. I returned the car with a full tank. The staff said they couldn't do anything so I called customer Service and was told they would refund 20%. I was told it would take 3-5 days, we are past that deadline. They rent out dirty cars, low on fuel and they lie. If that refund hits my bank I will come back and amend this, otherwise I would suggest using Enterprise. By the way we prepaid for both cars which was why the staff said they couldn't do anything for us . read more

WARNING: THERE IS NO AFTER HOURS DROP OFF AT THIS LOCATION, even though they claim there is (as of November 2020) I had a terrible experience with SLO Avis. I rented a car one way to drop off at the SLO airport. I wasn't able to drop off the car until late in the evening (11:30PM). I called Avis in advance to confirm that they accepted after-hours rental drop-offs. I actually called the SLO Avis counter multiple times throughout the day but would always get redirected to the national number where you speak to a general customer service representative and not a local agent who works at SLO. The Avis rep confirmed that there was a drop-box location for the car key at the SLO airport location, which then prompted me to book my rental. Fast forward to the day I was returning my rental late in the evening. I parked my rental in the designated return spot and spent 20 minutes searching for a drop box. I did laps around the rental car parking lot, the airport, but could not locate a drop box. The Avis counter was empty (as expected) and I could not even enter the airport, even though the airport hours on the glass state they were open until 12AM. After experiencing an excruciating phone call with a useless Avis rep (once again, national number) who insisted there was a drop-box available and I just wasn't looking hard enough... I know this rep I spoke to wasn't from SLO Avis specifically, but what terrible customer service and the way he spoke down to me was just insulting. I gave up and just accepted the reality that I would have to come back the next morning to drop off the keys... which really messed with my travel plans. I returned the next morning as soon as they opened... there was no AVIS rep at the counter but at least the airport was open. So turns out.. the key drop off box is on the Avis counter.. inside the airport... which is locked out... So this is not a true after-hours drop off location. I don't even know when the true SLO airport hours are since there weren't any signs indicating they had been modified from their usual hours. Overall extremely frustrating experience. Never do a return at SLO airport Avis. Especially after hours, because it doesn't exist. Nobody will answer your phone call at the site and they are useless at the national level. Trying to spread the awareness so that you won't be left stranded late at night trying to return your rental car. Note: the Avis SLO airport address is 975 Airport Dr Suite 8, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. I had GREAT customer service from Sam at this location. The pickup and dropoff were easy and hassle free. What made this AMAZING was my experience once I got home to WA. I realized I accidentally left my disabled parking placard in the rental car and called to see if it was still there. Sam went out to the lot, found it, and mailed it to me. Saved me a huge headache since I didn't have to go through the process of getting a new one. This issue was due to my own forgetfulness and Sam could have easily blown me off, but he didn't. They were beyond rude. My flight out of SFO was canceled and I had to spend the night there. I immediately called this Avis location to let them know I wouldn't be able to pick the car up until the following morning. The man on the phone was nice and said it wouldn't be a problem. I arrived the following morning and my car was not there. The manager was very rude to me and said, "Surprise, if you don't show up for the car, we don't magically keep it for you." I said, "I called, last night, at 9:05 pm and spoke with *name*, he said it wouldn't be a problem." "Oh, well he didn't leave a note for me. You're going to have to wait while we ready a car for you." There was no apology for his sarcasm or rudeness. Moving on... The day before, my mother had stopped by and asked if she could drop off a free one-day coupon for my use. She was told that was fine and the employee accepted the coupon from her. When I explained this to the manager, he accused my mother of lying and "trying to pull a fast one" on them. I called my mother, who talked to the manager, told him the name of the employee and said she wasn't trying to make anything more difficult, that she was told she could do that. The manager hung up the phone and spoke poorly about my mother to me. I said, "Sir, she isn't trying to rip you off. She spoke with your employee - YOUR Representative - who said it was fine for her to leave that for me. "Well, that employee will likely be fired over that. He was wrong to do that." I replied, "That is between you and your employee, you have been rude to me since I got here and I've done nothing but try to give you my business." And so on. So, the guy who runs it is a total jerk. The women who works there with him is a total dumbbell. And apparently, they have no problem speaking poorly about their co-workers/team members to their clients. Just rent from any of the other open rent-a-car windows at SLO airport. Basically Avis did not provide us with the correct vehicle size and we were charged for the wrong type as well. Wifey had to rent a car for me for one way. She decided to go with Avis as they did not penalize us for the one way trip. Due to me being a larger person, wifey signed me up for a full sized car. I will say this part is my fault as I should have looked at the reservations and asked questions as I was a poor advocate for myself. The fellow at the counter was cordial enough and asked if a small car would work. My response was "sure" thinking wifey rented the cheapest we could. When I drove the car up to wifey, she WTF'd me saying that I paid for a full size car and a VW big is a small size. Welll darn!!! I was duped! My lesson for this experience is be your own advocate. So here's my Avis experience! -10 out of 100! I rented a car in Fullerton CA (fantastic service. Love this location) and went up to San Luis Obispo. My tire pressure was going down quickly when we got there and I was getting constant notifications from the car. I made ELEVEN calls attempting to get help starting Monday night into tuesday morning. No one answered, even though the location I was calling was still open for another hour and the emergency help line put me on hold multiple times and wouldn't connect me to anyone then IT WOULD DISCONNECT. I was disconnected multiple times and left without any help. When I finally got ahold of someone he put me off 3 hours then FINALLY let me come get a replacement. When I got this replacement, I told him that due to the rapidly flattening tire we weren't able to get gas because we didn't want to damage the car in case the tire completely blew but that if it was an issue I would go get gas. He told me not to worry about it. When I got home and returned this second car I was told there was 115$ of extra charges. We were charged for the gas HE TOLD US NOT TO WORRY ABOUT. I was also charged a cleaning fee. Why? There was a little mud on the floor mats. This was not extra wear and tear. It was minimal and would all come out with the normal cleaning that all cars are supposed to go through after return. Or does Avis not clean their cars in the middle of a pandemic? Then when the man at my rental location tried and failed to remove the charges, he told me that the charges were coded from an AIRPORT. NOT my home location. He said I would need to call customer service because he couldn't change those codes. That's understandable. When I called customer service the representative wouldn't let me explain the situation. He consistently cut me off and spoke down to me. He laughed at me and told me "you must not want to get these charges off" and threatened to hang up on me. He insisted I dirtied and damaged the second car even though those codes were used AT AN AIRPORT and I only ever went to one air port, San Luis Obispo. Then he suggested I drive to that location and complain to them (five hours away). I asked to talk to a supervisor and he said no, that he was working at home, they don't have supervisors. Threatened to hang up again. He insisted that the car I had just returned 20 minutes prior was the car being charged and that I didn't fill up the tank (I did) and attempted to tell me I had to prove I filled up the tank when the man I returned the car to said that the tank was full and the car was perfectly fine. Absolutely HORRIBLE customer service. He cut me off over and over again, refused to listen to why I felt there was a mistake, threatened to hang up on me, and laughed at me because I was upset at being charged over 25% more for the car. He also told me "you're lucky. The cleaning fee is normally 250$" BUT THE CAR WASNT DIRTY. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR AN EXTRA CLEANING FEE. Are all Avis like this? They don't do the walk around and check, just handed me the keys. The car smelled like someone smoked in there so complained and was told I won't be charged. Dropped it off at Union Station, LA, and again, no walk around, no checking for anything. Just dropped off the keys and find out later they charged me $240 extra because the car smells like smoke inside. Called them about the charge and told them I picked up the car smelling like that and that I don't even smoke. They told call the Avis I picked up car from. Called San Luis Obispo Airport Avis and they tell me they will look into it and call back, but still haven't heard back. I picked up the car on 12/21 and dropped off on 12/23. Called same day of drop off and now 4 days have passed. I even made complaint to main branch. Complaint #31309235. My suggestion, DO NOT waste your time and money here. Enterprise is more professional and helpful by far. read more

It was very clean and had a full tank of gas. The customer service was great. The paperwork was processed quickly both at pick up and drop off. Bait and switch. Ask for full coverage insurance - given the minimum. Ask if this assistance with my tire will be covered by the insurance I purchased? "Yes, ma'am" from the AVIS Customer Service Rep as well as the tow truck driver who simply put a donut on the vehicle - that was parked in my drive way. I explicitly asked both, "will this be covered by the insurance? Both said yes. I was never presented with a bill or an invoice for this "road side assistance." Did I sign a contract when I picked up the car? Yes, I did. Did I call AVIS as soon as I had a problem? Yes, I did. Did they lie to me and sell me a product they knew would not help me? YES THEY DID! One month later, I receive a charge on my credit card statement for almost $100. When I called customer service, all they could say was "you signed the agreement" and then when I mentioned bait and switch, she hung up on me. I WILL NEVER RENT FROM AVIS AGAIN AND I WILL TELL ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN THIS STORY! read more

This is THE WORST car rental agency at this location for professional travelers. I arrived on 25 Aug at 4:30. I was the first and only person in line after my flight. The rental agent took five minutes to check me in and said she just needed to go clean the car. I saw another customer approach after I left and I assumed that I wouldn't have to wait, but I did. Ten minutes after the customer behind me left the counter, the agent comes strolling out while texting on her cell phone, despite the fact she knew I was late for a client meeting. Then, fifteen minutes later, she pulls up in the car. I drive away irritated, but when I'm in the middle of rush hour traffic, she calls me to tell me she gave me the wrong key. She says she'll send someone out to meet me and to call back when I reach my location. Long story short, the car ends up turning off and I'm stranded until 10pm. She never answered the phone call when I called again 10x. Then, I called road service and they were shocked and said she never called or returned their calls. Then I found rotten food in the car. Discourteous customer service after the car we were given was making noise and shaking when accelerating. We called this location to inquire about switching out for another car (no one wants to end up on the side of the road during vacation) and they agreed we should come in and exchange the vehicle later in the afternoon when more cars would be available from the fleet class we paid for. We drove an hour to the location to switch out the car during the time interval they asked and when we arrived they had no cars available except a pickup truck. We were willing to even take an up-charge for any other car in the lot but we were told Nothing was available here or the madonna rd location. We are a family of 4 with luggage...how is a Nissan pickup truck practical for our reservation exchange? Being out of cars is one thing but it would have taken 5 minutes to give us a curtesy call or ask us to come back another day! It should have been a charge of $177.47, but my card was charged 3 times for that amount, so of course I cancelled immediately, not wanting to do business with a company that would do this. This was my firs time ever renting a car, so I don't have much to compare this place to. But I have been with friends that have rented cars and I felt like this place was a bit disorganized. It was included in our Expedia package along with the hotel room and flight. Needless to say, we got a good deal. We arrived late to Avis because our flight was delayed 2.5 hours. The Avis guy wasn't expecting us and was about to close up shop for the night, so I'm glad we made it. I do think it'd be nice if they kept track of their customers flights so they knew if they were going to get delayed, etc. It's a super small airport and not a lot of rentals go out, especially at 10pm. Anywho, we got to rent a mini and it did the trick for what we needed. They asked me if I wanted insurance and I figured it'd be a good idea, since you never know what'll happen. But it'll cost you. It costs anywhere from $15-$25/day depending on the type of insurance you get (liability, 3rd party, full coverage, etc.). I thought that was a little steep, but I ended up paying $80 for it anyways. When we returned the car, they didn't tell us we needed to know the mileage on it...so my hub had to walk back out to the car, which was a bit of a walk, to get the mileage. Overall, I'd probably use them again if it came in a package with a great deal like it did. read more

I was driving from SLO to their Anaheim location. In addition to my steering wheel shaking upon slowing down (which is an alignment issue), my rental had an engine system failure. I had to exit in LA, in an unknown area. I was from out of state. My destination was much further away than where I had to pull over. I was offered to be taken to LAX, but I was not going north. My mother had to come get me and she did not know the area either. In total it took 2 hours from calling to having my rental towed. I was not offered a refund even though I asked for one. I was extremely disappointed with the offer of 2 free days to make up for a rental that should not have been rented in the first place. This implies that I want to use your services again. My work uses Avis frequently and I am hesitant to use Avis again because my work relies on me traveling safely and on time to my destinations. Overall, I am disappointed. I had to pay in full for my rental. Waiting for the tow truck was time consuming as I had people waiting on me. Avis, you should be ashamed. Renting out unsafe cars is a way to lose customers very quickly. The only saving grace were your employees on the phone. They were nice. I tried being nice and that got me no where. read more
