She does require payment upfront though to discourage no-shows. CON: * The only thing I disliked is the ointment or serum she applied at the end. This review is solely based on the scheduling experience. I never received service, so I can't speak to it. I am new to the area and was looking for a new provider. I read really nice reviews and it was close to home, so I scheduled in advance for my first appointment. The first communication from Colleen was to notify me of the policy to pay in advance but then she told me that she needed to reschedule me because she had another appointment in another location that afternoon. She asked to move me up the same day, but my schedule wouldn't not allow it, so we rescheduled for the next week which was the day before I had a flight the next morning for a trip. I paid in advance and prepared for my appointment. About 1.5 hours before the appointment, Colleen reached out to say that she had to cancel appointments for the next 2 days due to a medical issue. I'm a reasonable person. I understand things happen, but I did express frustration to Colleen because this was the 2nd reschedule and based on her explanation of her issue, it was clear to me that she knew that she would have to potentially cancel the day before. I told her that I would have appreciated that consideration because it would have allowed me time to reschedule with someone else. I was offered a refund and it was returned right away. I would have been open to trying again if I felt that my time would be respected in the future, but Colleen did not offer customer service that was acceptable to me. She did text pictures of her issue and explain why she could not work. I explained to her that I did not need evidence. I believed her and would not want her to be unsafe, I just would have appreciated advanced notice (when she knew the day before that she would likely have to cancel). Wow! I really appreciate Colleen, this was my first visit to her - but prior to that, while coordinating, she definitely made me feel at ease and gave me an idea of what to expect. She has a great demeanor, is super fast and efficient - and trust me when I say that it was significantly less painful than traditional waxing. I am new to Yelp and often do not review but I felt compelled to let others know of my recent experience with Hey Sugar. I found Hey Sugar after much research on Yelp and other websites about seemingly quality sugaring places near my college campus. I made an appointment with Colleen for full legs + Brazilian + underarms at first, and that's when I first learned of the prepayment policies. For that combination of services, clients need to pay half the amount upfront, and even if the plans change the day of -- like you do not have enough hair to be sugared -- you are still responsible for paying for that service. I hadn't found that at other (yet further) sugaring locations, but I was in a short timeline and, again, wanted something close to campus, so I decided to stay with this company. I canceled my first booking and decided to do a Brazilian and underarm combo instead. After I booked, I received an email from Colleen stating I need to pay $49 per the prepayment policy. I had assumed the pay-half prepayment policy she explained during the full leg + Brazilian + underarm combo applied to all her services. I got an blunt answer of "no". So I replied like, "I understand and I'll send it shortly." I also asked if she has a list of prepayment policies somewhere on a website or page so I can be more familiar with them. I then got the response you can see in the photo with her essentially refusing my service outright. You can see my reply in the next photo as well. Overall, I was hopeful and excited to try Hey Sugar for its relative affordability and close distance to my university, but Colleen's lack of professional communication and client-oriented service was truly disappointing and lost her a customer. I hope other people are aware of this and her hidden/conditional prepayment policies before booking. Although this is no testament to the work that she does once you do successfully book with her, I think the interface a client has with a professional before they even book is very telling of the type of experience that client would have. Just had my very first sugaring experience this passed weekend with Colleen and it went pleasantly well!! Since I know it is tricky to find parking in DTLA especially on a Saturday I had my fiancé drop and pick me up to my appointment. This amazing woman did such a good job and was done in ten minutes. Tell me when you've ever had a ten minute Brazilian wax? And I had some stubborn hairs from a 2020 full of neglect. So communicative and understanding. I have only good things to say about Colleen and my experiences at Hey Sugar! I've been going to her for years and have been comfortable referring her to many of my friends. Colleen is super experienced and works very fast. The place is clean and she makes you feel very comfortable! She is a small business owner and does all her billing and payments herself. That being said, I've never had issues with payments. Just thought I would add that after seeing a previous review. The only cons might be the location, but it hardly poses as a problem. The place is small and might be a little weird to find for first timers, but she has a doorsign and you can always text her if you're lost! The one thing that you may have to work around is parking. Edinburgh Ave., is residential street parking with permits. I wouldn't chance it. Enter the nail salon and go up the staircase to Room 3 for sugaring. If she's with a client, you can have a seat and wait on the mini white stool next to a pile of magazines. Colleen is the one with tattoos on her with medium blonde hair. As for the sugaring.... It's an organic mixture of lemon, sugar, water and something else - I forgot (looks just like honey). She uses a dollop of it (mine was the size of a golf ball). So there's no sticks involved, and she uses the whole golf ball size amount on me - both front and back sides. At the end of the session, it looks like your cat just coughed up a hairball, lol! As you do the butterfly pose, Colleen will spread it on your parts, and she'll walk you through it with warnings and deep breaths, before she pulls. You'll also be hands on assisting her with pulling your skin taunt to ensure an effective, cleaner pull. She's easy to talk to, and will keep you distracted from the pain as much as possible. For your back side, you lie on your sides and assist her while she sugars. Afterwards, you can preview your kitty, and she'll tweezer any tiny ones you have and clean you up with tea tree oil, and will give you post care instructions until your next sugaring. Surprisingly, it didn't hurt as much (about the same pain as waxing - like a quick, electro shock you get from rubbing your feet on the carpet. For my first time sugaring, I've enjoyed it. Now, I got to experience both the wax and sugaring versions. Both are great and I feel so smooth all over, yay! Consistently great wax with minimal ingrowns and pain. I have had hard and soft wax from both really good and bad waxers, and now sugaring with Colleen. I want to stick with this and not go back to any other waxers. if you like hard wax, I can tell you that this is more efficient and has as little or even less pain than hard wax, with no irritation afterward. Also, Colleen makes you feel comfortable and I love that she applies pressure after she waxes each area to decrease any pain - this technique is KEY. Ladies (or gents), we all know getting a Brazilian wax is awkward and it makes you cringe thinking about the process. This is TMI but because of that reason I've delayed my session and pretty much .. let it go. I finally found the courage to reach out to Colleen to make an appointment after numerous painful moments of shaving myself. I've heard the pros of sugar wax compared to the regular wax people are more familiar with. And let me tell ya honey I was ready to be sugared! Location is in downtown LA and of course the parking is an issue. There's only metered parking or the option of paying $15 at the lot right next to the building (not worth it because your session will take less than 10 mins). The sugar process: I must say the most painful sensation you'll feel is when she's applying the sugar. And that's only because your hair is tugging with the sugar but it's nothing excruciating and completely controllable. Mind you, no strips are used just the pull of the dry sugar. This may sound like a nightmare but I am one that has zero tolerance for pain and this was far less painful than my previous waxing experiences with the strips. So happy with the outcome especially because I'm couple weeks in and still baby butt sugared!! Colleen is also great with responses through Yelp messages. Colleen is great! She's so professional, knowledgeable and very, very quick - I hadn't been in for over two months and she still had me completely done in well under 30 minutes. Sugaring works a lot better for me than regular wax - I have less ingrowns and redness. I also feel like it gets more of the hairs and I have less stragglers? It's basically a ball of gel-like sugar that's spread across the hairs and then pulled off, similar to wax. I personally also don't find it as hot as wax although I think Colleen can adjust the temperature to your liking. The studio is always clean and comfortable, it's downtown in a building near the fashion district (I take the bus, there are many stops nearby).
