My Problem: Last Thursday, I spent $100 to find out my 10…read moreyear old Trane compressor fried. The starting repair costs would be almost $4,000, however my usual HVAC company said the whole thing needed replacing. AWESOME! Just what I wanted to hear when we're expecting a foot of snow. Even better, he said Trane didn't make a model anymore that would fit in the existing closet. Solution: My Dad just had his entire system and duct work replaced about a month ago by Larry & Sons and they did a great job. So he told me to call them and see what a new system would run. Moe, the Sales Rep, came out that afternoon. He said he could fit a new system with the base models and the high efficiency ones. After going through the house, seeing what I had, didn't like currently, and what I wanted to have, we decided on one of the high-efficiency models, and got a final price worked out. Moe said they'd be here at 8:30AM on Wednesday. Problem Solved: Wednesday, right after we got a foot of snow, they showed up at 8:30AM (exactly) and went to work. They even brought in several heaters for me. These guys went above and beyond in every aspect of their work. They managed to do what Trane said wasn't possible. That evening, the foreman came up and told me they would have to come back and finish up the next day. They made sure we had plenty of heaters and cleaned up after themselves. Considering they'd been installing an all new system, in the freezing cold, and trudging through a ton of snow, you couldn't tell they'd been there. The next day they showed up again at 8:30AM promptly to finish. When they finished, they walked me through the house to make sure I was completely satisfied with each segment. They'd taken away all my old stuff. They'd dug my old cement pad out, where the outside fan sat, and built a new beautiful pad with about a foot of edging all the way around, surrounded by thick wood border. Next he showed me where they had installed some of the pipes and wires along the side of the house. It was well placed, and they even put a casing over the whole length that matched my vinyl siding. Then he showed me the closet where the main unit is. I couldn't believe my eyes. They'd removed all of Trane's equipment and connecting ducting. It looked like a laser had just gutted it and everything was new. He showed me how to change the filter, and where there was a light that kills anything that makes it through the filter. He showed me the return vents they enlarged upstairs to move the air better. Then he programmed the new LED thermostat, while showing me what he was doing so I could change it if I ever wanted. He turned the new system on and it was blowing nice and strong air; you could barely feel it before. The outside unit was just humming quietly. The past four days have been an amazing difference. The fan automatically adjusts how much air to push. It's even learning how long it takes for the temperature to change so when it comes to a time it's supposed to change (like being warmer in the morning), it actually starts the change gradually so it uses less power, and less noise. I'm sorry for such a long review, but I've never felt that just "It's great!" gives me any useful information. Larry & Sons did a fabulous job for my family. They put down floor protectors and wore booties over their boots, so when they were done, my house looks the same... plus a lot of well installed equipment.

I was disappointed with the lack of transparency regarding pricing. When I initially called, I was…read moretold the consultation fee would be $50, and that if we had multiple issues within the same category, we would only be charged one consultation fee rather than separate fees for each concern. We specifically called because our electric water heater had clearly caught fire. We even had photos showing the damage, so we weren't looking for someone to diagnose that it had burned up--we needed help with replacement and recommendations for the underlying tank issues. Instead, we were charged for a plumbing diagnostic, a water heater diagnostic, and a water sampling test, bringing the total to $150--three times what we were originally told. At no point before the technician performed these services were these additional charges explained or approved. I understand that diagnostic testing and water analysis have value, but customers deserve to know the costs upfront so they can make an informed decision. Clear communication and transparency about pricing would have made this a much better experience.

They came the first day and billed me $300 but didn't know what was wrong. Came back the next day and billed me another $400 still saying they couldn't figure out what was wrong with the heat pump. They said they would come the 3rd day and look at it again. After $700 in invoices for nothing, I said I was done with them. I shouldn't have to pay extra for their incompetence.

Bottom line: Air Doctor is a high-performing company you can call to have your HVAC issue diagnosed…read moreand repaired promptly, professionally, thoroughly, and at a fair price. Ken & Scott were very responsive; initial call was a Tuesday afternoon and they had a tech onsite the next day (Wednesday), who was trained & equipped to perform a leak test due to our central AC unit freezing up. The system was back up & running by noon the following Friday. The initial test (without nitrogen) quickly showed a leak at the copper pipes where they enter the coil unit. Ken was able to get us a soft copy quote the same day for parts & labor; they researched the unit warranty & history with the manufacturer & found the defective coil was itself a warranty replacement in 2020 (before we bought the house) & unfortunately had no coverage as such. I really appreciated the effort Ken put into looking at our situation & options, & the transparency. There was absolutely no mention of or pressure to buy a new unit but I did ask about a ballpark figure just to get an idea. Ken and I concluded that the repair was much more cost effective & appropriate versus a new system at this time. We agreed to proceed and Scott set up the parts order, with the repair set for the following Friday morning. Scott and his technician came out at 10am on Friday & advised us they'd be about 2 to 3 hours. They proceeded to remove the defective unit & installed the new coil, charged it with refrigerant, and ops tested the system while monitoring pressure to ensure no other leaks or issues were present. They cleaned up the HVAC room & even rerouted a cable powering the UV light so that it was neatly out of the way. Scott also provided great tips on checking the high level MERV filters we have & increased frequency of replacements as needed to ensure a good airflow. He also educated me on how to maintain the conversation drain pipe and pump with vinegar instead of bleach, to prevent the metal component of the float switch from corroding. Finally, Scott answered questions I had about our system's longevity and quality of different manufacturers' systems. A note about their professionalism: they always donned protective shoe covers before entering the house, without me ever having to request it. They always wore company logo shirts and drove professionally labeled trucks in good repair, & it was evident that Scott was instructing his apprentice technician. They also made sure all screws were where they should be--you'd be surprised how many maintenance techs (any industry) overlook details like this. I cite these as some examples of a solid, dependable company after many years observing best practices in my own career and those of other companies I've done business with both professionally & privately. We called in Air Doctor after filling a maintenance request though American Home Shield, who had initially assigned a different vendor, United Air Temp. They were not able to diagnose or resolve the issue over the course of about 10 days, having sent techs on at least 2 occasions who were not able to perform the needed leak test, with rescheduling always taking additional phone calls and at least two days to arrange. They also seemed more interested in selling us other services such as water heater cleaning or an annual HVAC maintenance agreement. After the last tech came in without any progress, we decided to ask help from a professional network my wife is part of along with Ken, and the result was as described above--a very prompt and thorough resolution.
