From the moment I walked in, I was obsessed with the atmosphere and all the thoughtful details that make the space feel so unique. I love that it effortlessly transforms from a cozy coffee shop by day into a cocktail bar at night--the vibes are immaculate no matter when you visit. The staff was exceptional and so helpful in walking me through the menu. One of my favorite things to do is ask the baristas what they recommend, and they definitely didn't disappoint. I went with a blueberry vanilla iced latte, and it was the perfect way to kick off my Friday.

Some were quietly relaxing while others were catching up over drinks. The coffeehouse-meets-cocktail-bar aesthetic is well executed and gives the space a distinct personality. I ordered the nonalcoholic Basil Needs a Break, and it was excellent. If you like basil, this drink definitely delivers. It was bright, refreshing, and very basil-forward. The service was friendly and welcoming. My only complaint was the temperature inside. It was nearly 100 degrees outside, but the bar felt warm with very little air circulation. It was almost refreshing to step back into the muggy heat after leaving, which probably isn't the feeling you're hoping to give your guests. I'd definitely come back for the drinks and atmosphere, but I'd hope for a cooler temp next time.

I'd been wanting to check out SoBro's Social Cantina for quite awhile, however, my schedule lately…read morehas been a bit bonkers and it's just far enough out of my way that I simply haven't made it. I'd taken the day off of work today. With a couple hours for lunch between obligations, I decided to finally stop in. This location of Social Cantina is at 46th and College on the Southeast corner in what used to be Gallery Pastry Shop (and before that it was the restaurant owned by Kimbal Musk - the slightly more normal Musk brother, though that's admittedly a low bar). Social Cantina is a Mexican joint that serves up tacos, classic entrees, lots of margaritas, and a few other items. They have daily specials including weekday lunch specials. They have their own parking lot with a couple accessible spots. In an extreme rarity, they have automatic doors (this is a leftover from Musk's place, though I like that they've kept it - I will say the first of two doors acted a little wonky today). They have a 1,000-square foot outdoor patio that is dog-friendly. Part of it is covered. I arrived around noon on a Monday for lunch. As I've nearly always seen people here when driving by, I was surprised to be the only customer. It stayed this way the entire time I was present. The atmosphere is contemporary, and the background music definitely leaned into American pop/rock/alt. I thought the music was a wee bit loud, but it wasn't overly bothersome. I ordered a chicken tinga quesadilla which included a large flour tortilla stuffed with mixed cheese and tinga marinated chicken served with chopped romaine, pico de gallo, roasted red salsa, and tomatillo crema. I ordered my usual iced tea. The bill came in about $21 - I should note that the quesadilla is an entree, and it's one of the higher priced items. However, it's completely worth it. It was delicious. I did get my always desired iced tea refill. Given the lightness of the crowd, the energy was light. There was one employee up front (I'm guessing manager), though he was joined by another one before I'd left. Of course, there were folks in the back. Social Cantina was founded in 2018. It's part of the Finney Hospitality Group that includes The Tap, Smokeworks, Yogis, and Kind Car Wash. I enjoyed my visit and would easily return. The menu, which also includes Cantina Bowls, isn't quite as extensive as some Mexican joints. However, I enjoyed it quite a bit and I really want to visit when it's hopping a bit more. I would note that nearly every business on this corner is territorial about parking. Signage indicates that. Social Cantina has a decent-sized parking lot, and there's street parking around it. Plus, it's directly on the red line with a stop practically right next to it. I also found the restrooms, which are single-user and unisex, pretty wheelchair friendly (though there were some chairs somewhat blocking the aisle - I was able to make it work). I'll for sure be back.

I tried the carnitas taco, shrimp taco, and pork belly taco. The carnitas taco was very dry at first, although one bite later had more flavor (and quite a bit of fat). The shrimp taco tasted undercooked to me and was also pretty bland. The pork belly pieces were actually delicious and flavorful, but the taco included jalapeños, which made it difficult for me to enjoy since I'm sensitive to spice. So I couldn't enjoy that. On the positive side, I tasted my daughter's birria tacos and thought they were delicious. We also had chips and esquites. The chips were flavorful, and while the esquites itself had good flavor, I'm not sure it really worked as a dip for me personally. Overall, I think some of this came down to personal taste and menu choices. My tacos weren't quite what I had hoped for on a special Mother's Day outing, but I would likely come back to try the birria tacos after tasting those.

The space has a laid-back neighborhood bar vibe with just enough quirky personality to make it memorable. The bartenders made us feel welcome from the moment we sat down, and after learning it was our first visit, introduced us to one of the coolest traditions I've seen at a bar. I won't completely spoil the "Polaroid game," but here's the idea: each week there's a different silly question. They snap your Polaroid, you write your answer on the bottom, and your picture gets added to the wall. Future visitors get to laugh at everyone's answers without ever knowing what the original question was. We spent way too much time trying to guess what everyone had been asked. On our first visit they were grilling their own 50/50 bacon-and-beef burgers out back, and I still think about that burger. It wasn't fancy--just hot, fresh, wrapped in foil, and ridiculously good. I was a little sad when they eventually switched over to serving Julieta's tacos through the walk-up window (which are fantastic, by the way), because I'd absolutely order that burger again if I could. The themed drink menus, friendly staff, fun atmosphere, and little details like the Polaroid tradition are what keep this place feeling different from every other bar in town. Bonus points to whoever runs their social media--they're always coming up with creative specials and themes that make me want another visit. If you're exploring the Stutz, don't just walk past Turner's. Grab a drink, play along, and become part of the wall.

We stopped by Turner's while attending an event at The Stutz. After debating venturing out into…read morewinter weather and playing the downtown parking hunger games, we decided staying in the building was the move. Convenience: 10/10. Turner's itself is a good sized establishment with a pool table and a few different seating areas, which makes it feel like a solid spot to hang out whether you're there for drinks, food, or killing time before an event. They also have a cut out window where you can order Julieta Tacos, which is a really cool option if you want to mix things up food wise without leaving the space. We grabbed seats at the bar where a bartender (didn't catch her name) greeted us and handed over menus. I mentioned we were there for the Devour menu and was told it was over... which was interesting since Turner's website was still advertising it earlier that same morning. After a quick check with a manager, they honored it, which we definitely appreciated because nothing says "Devour disappointment" like ghosted food promos. The Devour deal included a hot dog, chips, and a cocktail. I ordered the Miami Vice and honestly, no notes. Solid drink. We also got to pick snack sized chip bags hanging behind the bar, which felt a little like choosing snacks at a gas station, but hey, variety is variety. Now for the plot twist... We were told our hot dogs were ready and to grab them from the warmer. Exciting, right? Except when we opened the warmer, the foil wrapped hot dogs were... cold. Cold. Like they, too, were braving the Indiana winter. When we let staff know, there was a bit of a team huddle on how to handle it, which felt slightly awkward and unorganized. It also felt like we accidentally became "those customers," simply for wanting our hot dogs to be warm. Thankfully, another bartender, Andre, stepped in like the calm in the storm. He got fresh hot dogs warmed up and brought them out and he continued checking on us for the rest of our visit, which honestly saved the experience. Overall: Cocktails were good, the location is super convenient if you're already at The Stutz, and shoutout to Andre for turning things around! That said, I can probably check Turner's off my list and doubt I'll make a trip back unless I'm already at The Stutz & if I do return, it would likely be for drinks only!
