Bacchus Capital Management has done it again!…read more Toro Sushi sits off the main drag in BSL. They have a small side parking lot which is an added bonus considering the parking constraints of downtown. The space is gorgeous. Bright white walls with blue accents. They boast a spacious indoor seating area complemented by even more seating in their upstairs bar/balcony area. We didn't have a reservation but we got there early enough in the evening that we were able to snag some seats at the bar and able to see the gorgeous sunset from the balcony. When I first saw the menu, I'll admit I was underwhelmed. This is NOT your normal sushi restaurant, which is what I was expecting. It is more of a Japanese tapas bar. It is super unique. To start off, I ordered the lychee mojito. It was pricey but good. We did the spicy edamame as an appetizer and it was spicy indeed and very tasty. For my entree, I selected the spicy California roll and it was a great size and very delicious. My date got the tuna tacos which I also sampled and they were also excellent. To top it all off, the service was spectacular- the young lady and gentleman working the bar were top notch and they were the cherry on the top for a wonderful dining experience.

Pretty good, but not as good as it used to be! I haven't been here since before COVID. Not sure if…read moreScott still owns this restaurant or not, but he wasn't there last night. The sushi was pretty good, just not as flavorful as I remember it. The ginger dressing for the salad did not taste like it had ginger in it at all. It was more of a vinaigrette dressing - so that was pretty disappointing. My son and his girlfriend got the Miso soup and neither one of them liked their soup. My daughter got chicken tenders and fries (she isn't quite into sushi yet, or seafood at all). She said they were the best chicken tenders she ever had. I really wanted the Pebble Beach roll, that has always been my favorite. The waitress said they have been out of scallops for three months. She stated they could go to a grocery store to get them, but their chain restaurant has certain place they purchase their seafood. That was a bit surprising!!! I always thought this was a somewhat local test owned by one person. Maybe it was bought out after COVID???

Had an early dinner here a couple weeks ago; my apologies for the late review…read more I also don't know why it took me so long to eat at this place! But glad I finally did! There is limited seating and if you are dining during a weekend or an evening that falls on a weekend, I would suggest making reservations. Now.....onto the food - since that's what you're here for anyway ;-) We ordered a total of five sushi rolls: two spicy tuna hand rolls and three specialty rolls including Pebble Beach, the Cajun Roll, and the Shotgun. The spicy tuna rolls were wrapped and cut into normal bite-size pieces (which I appreciate) and were probably the freshest sushi rolls I've ever had. Out of the three specialty rolls, I mostly enjoyed the Pebble Beach and Shotgun; but my boyfriend loved all three of them! We had not one single piece left - which also meant no room for any other entrees or dessert; maybe next time! The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was very laid back. They do have a small selection of beer and you can have your own bottle of wine opened at the restaurant for a nominal fee. Check it out...you won't be disappointed!

For sushi, we tried the Kimberly Roll and the Cao Roll, and both were excellent--easily the highlight of the meal. The Kimberly Roll, with its slight jalapeño kick on top, is a must-try for anyone who enjoys a little heat. The chicken and steak fried rice was another winner--flavorful and served in a very generous portion. The chicken katsu, breaded in panko, was good as well, but the sauce on the side was served cold. Our server mentioned that only their teriyaki sauce is served hot, which felt odd given that the dish itself comes out hot. In our humble opinion, heating up the sauces would make a big difference. Service was a B: a bit slow and not particularly warm, though not unfriendly. The ambiance matched what you'd expect from a hibachi-style restaurant--lively with the occasional flash of hibachi flames across the way, which adds some fun energy to the room. Bottom Line: Koi Sushi offers some great sushi and hearty portions, with the Kimberly Roll stealing the show. Service could be sharper and those cold sauces need attention, but if you're in Gulfport and craving sushi, it's worth a visit.
