Called stating there was no problem with my garage doors, I just wanted an annual service done on them. Was quoted around $80. When tech arrived, he told me it would be $150. When he got done then, he charged me the $150 plus the $80. This was merely an attempt to take advantage of the elderly in my opinion. This company came out, spent less than an hour at the home. They replaced the same wheel that came out on my garage door track, then tightened the tension on one side. Charged $85 for a Direct Labor, $65 for Travel (?). On top of this they charged me IA Sales Tax for their Labor and Travel. What was taxable? The last I checked labor and so called travel is not taxable. When I called to speak with them, they had no answers for my questions, asked where the work was done and said they'd call me back and hung up. I tried to call back and give them my number as it is different than the one on the service call, they saw that it was me calling back and hung up again. If needed I would most definitely call Hicklin Garage Doors and I will recommend them to anyone needing any type of work done involving a garage door. While I was watching to house for my parents who went out of town one of the springs on their garage door broke. Before I go any further I should note that Hicklin came to our house back in 2013 and did a spring repair and service on our door then as well (Im not an expert by and means but over 10 years on a base model spring sounds pretty good to me). So following my father's advice I contacted Hicklin Garage Doors to get an estimate. They did me one better, within 2 hours a service Tech, Collin, was at the door ready to take a look. After his initial assessment he advised me that it was in fact a broken spring and after a short but detailed breakdown of the different packages they offered Collin was hard at work. From the time I called to completion were talking about a span of no more than 4 hours. The work done by Collin itself only taking about an hour and that was with me standing there asking him all kinds of questions. Despite my quest for garage door knowledge Collin answered every question I had making sure I knew exactly what he was telling me. Very knowledgeable and very polite. He came on a Sunday but there were no jacked up fees for a weekend visit thankfully because we needed to get the car out of our garage ASAP. The call out fee is $45.00 and there was a considerable mark-up on the parts, about 300% comparing the cost for the same parts online, makes this company not an economical solution. Needed two garage doors replaced. Met with 3 companies in Des Moines and selected Hicklin. The main decision was price. My wife talked to their sales rep and said he was fine. Placed the order and they needed 1/2 down for the job. Put it on a cc and they said they would call. More than likely 4-6 weeks out. After 10 weeks I called the facility and they said my doors were in weeks ago. The lady said she called me multiple times. I told her I didn't have any messages or texts. She didn't know but she called. I thought fine, lets get this done. They got me in quickly and sent two installers to my house. They arrived around 9 am and were done around 4. My wife called me and said the installers were just sitting in their truck. She said they spent 1/2 the time on break. I came home and they went straight to work. The installation of the doors was good. They forgot the trim and said that wasn't included. I'm changing from brown doors to black. Also, the sales rep told us that the trim was included. When talking with their office the lady said that the trim was suppose to be included but the sales rep didn't put it on the sheet correctly. They came back the next day and put the new trim on. The installers were asking me when I was going to call the office and pay for the second installment. The installers said the lady in the office is not happy that they haven't been paid yet. I told them when the job was finished. So the second day I called to finish paying. The lady on the phone asked me how the job was handled. So I thought she asked! So I started on the very beginning with the story about calling me. I explained that I would bring my phone to their office and show them no calls or texts. Well little did I know she was the one who was suppose to call me. Ready for this, she started yelling at me telling me I was lying and HUNG UP ON ME. So naturally I'm now mad and called them back. They answered and put me on hold never to pick up the phone again. So I called back and asked for the owner. They said another guy works with the owner and is the go to guy. After a few days I got a call back and he asked my if I had a problem. At this point I'm tired and done. I said you know what you have going on I don't need to explain it to you. That is the end. We had to pay for trip charges, wasting our time and money. 3 different employees that had no clue what they were doing and charging for services that didn't work. Couldn't use my commercial business. Sent us multiple bills while I would explain. Why would I pay for service calls and still have doors that didn't work. Do not recommend this company at all. My price had already increased over $100 since I wanted two remotes and the keyless entry that I had did not work with the new system. I had increased the lift force on the opener to get out of the garage that morning, and asked Eric to readjust after the repair. We had them come out because the spring on our door broke. I called and they were out later that day. I had noticed wires on the sides had begun to fray as well. As I had Darryl inspect the door, I asked about the opener as we had to get really close to the door to open it lately. The opener was over 20 years old. We had a couple bad rollers, bad brackets (rusting) and our insulation at the bottom wasn't flush. He gave a reasonable quote for all of it. We decided to have him take care of all of the issues rather than having to have them come back out. Fortunately we were his last appointment of the day. I was not impressed with that gentleman at the time, so I did not call him back when it stopped working again. This company had some good reviews and I'm very glad I gave them a call. I Had a Large 18 foot door replaced and with in a few months the top panel on the door buckled. I had originally purchased a door with window on the top panel and due to the length of the door I thought that maybe the windows had something to do with the failure of the panel. I called Hicklin and I had to pay to replace the panel and this time I replaced it with a solid panel. And the panel collapsed again. This was happening as the door was closing and encountered something that kept it from closing and instead of the door stopping and reopening as the are designed to do the opener did not recoil but continued to try and close the door which resulted in the opener crushing both panels. this is what happened both times. Hicklin came again and during my conversation with Jake he told me that this was a brand of doors that they don't use anymore because it was a crappy brand, and while at the house we started to talk about the opener and its settings. This opener was not replaced by them during the first installation, and I was told it was in good shape. So. I began to look closer at the setting I noticed that there was a setting for the recoil pressure, that adjusts the sensitivity of how the door responds to resistance. This was set to full pressure, not lightest pressure. This was never adjusted by them either time the door was installed. my prior door was a wooden door that weighed a ton, and looking back I could see why this was set to full pressure due to the weight of the door. The replacement door was sheet metal and not even close to the same weight. This adjustment was never set by them during either install, and they will not take the blame for the failure and want to charge me for a whole new door. this is the way I see it. They are the "Pros" in hind site it seems very obvious that they should of adjusted the setting or at lest brought it to my attention. Their neglagance led to the failure of both doors and they wont admit to it. I spent over $2500 and now need to replace the whole door again. Due you want to trust them with your money. Now I have to open and close my door manually till I get it fixed. Ive talk to Hicklin about my thoughts on the opener and Jake jumped in hid truck and drove off. Great company? I have used Hicklin several times now and could not be happier with their service and quality. We inherited a somewhat dated garage door and opener when we bought our house, so within the last year we've ended up needing to replace the torsion springs, the gear and sprocket setup that moves the chain, and ultimately the entire opener (gotta love home ownership, right?). Hicklin is always able to get us an appointment next day, their service windows are small so you're not waiting around your house forever for a tech, and they are polite, knowledgeable, communicative, and professional when they arrive! We've had Greg and Kieran out (can't remember the name of the tech who did the springs) recently, and a big measure of a quality company (for me) is someone who doesn't talk down to me or dumb things down purely because I'm female. I have never once felt belittled or condescended to; quite the opposite in fact. I pride myself on problem-solving and being handy, and I like to know how things work, and they always go over the problem and repair thoroughly and don't jerk me around with vague numbers or explanations. Kieran in particular has been a pleasure to work with; he is the kind of employee every company should strive to attract and I hope his boss sees this and gives him a serious bonus! Worst Ever. My service guy got out of his truck to tell me what he wasn't going to do. During the visit he was kicking stuff around. I asked him if everything was alright. He was upset because Hicklin doors was sending him on SHIT jobs and now they were sending him to Panora to have the company truck tires changed. Today was his last day with Hicklin, he had not received a Christmas bonus and was moving on. I was charged top dollar for the work, as shady as it was, but I wrote the check....if anything to get him out of my garage and on his way.
