We have been going there annually for a work get together before heading to memorial service in Downtown Dayton. There can be anywhere from 10-17 of us going. We always give them 4-6 weeks advance notice and always ask for the back room. The last two years they pushed several tables together right in the front of the restaurant jammed up against the doorway where people come in and the kitchen door. Last years service was decent and the food just O.K. This year we ordered at 5 PM and our food didn't show up until 6:10-6:15. Since we were supposed to meet in Downtown Dayton at 6:30, I asked that the checks be handed out. It took over 30 minutes for the waitress to give us our checks and to a person we were overcharged, even accounting for the mandatory tip that was included. They only had one waitress working our party of 16 and should have had 2. As we were waiting on our checks, we noticed our waitress was over at another table taking orders when others were standing around. None of us felt like we had time to argue about the overcharges because we were already late for our memorial service. We will not be back and will be brining our business elsewhere from now on. read more

This place is fancier than I thought it would be (& pricier than what I had in mind). They didn't have much of a selection in terms of bbq but they do have other selections on their menu. We ordered cabbage rolls, fried oysters, a rack of ribs and cheesecake for dessert. The appetizers were pretty delicious but not sure if worth the price. There were only 4 fried oysters & a lot of it was breading that was kind of hard. The ribs were yummy too... They were crispier than we expected but still pretty good. I wish there was more BBQ sauce either on the ribs or on the table. The cheesecake was huge and again, pretty good. My hubby ordered a couple glasses of wine which looked like double pours so he was happy. I would come back here maybe for a special occasion when I'd be okay with spending $65+ again. read more

I don't get it. Supposedly a campus landmark dating back to the 60's. There is a line out the door on a Saturday evening before a UD basketball game. We had high expectations - but the food was awful. Old school place. Experienced servers are attentive. The bread basket was the highlight. Salty pumpernickel was tasty. Ordered the ribs as this place has BBQ in the name, so we expected them to be delicious. They were bad... Really bad. Very little meat. Small bones. The slight morsels of Meat were not falling off the bone. Sauce is loaded with mustard. The rack we had could have been cooked last week. Surely not fresh from the smokehouse. Steaks were tough and fatty. The pork chops were fine and a big portion. And the place is fairly pricey - over $20 per entree. read more

After the Old Hickory BBQ on N. Main Street closed, we needed a new place for ribs. Hickory BBQ has ribs that are just like Old Hickory. I'm not sure if these restaurants shared family recipes, but I can't tell a difference between Old Hickory and Hickory BBQ ribs. House salad dressing and bread offering is similar too. The bread comes from Ashley's bakery in Oakwood and is fresh most of the time. The rib dinner comes with full slab and two sides for about $22. I've tried the pork tenderloin sandwich thinking it may be like the one from the Submarine House, but it was not breaded and the size of a hamburger bun. The rib dinner is my favorite meal here. I've tried the NY strip and it's decent, but nothing extraordinary. I've heard the cabbage rolls are good, but never tried them. If you go on a Friday or Saturday evening or holiday like Valentine's Day or Sweetest Day expect a wait. If you don't get a seat at the small bar, expect to be standing and the bar area gets very crowded. The nice thing is the hostess will put your name and phone number down and you can wait in your vehicle in the parking lot and they will call you when your table is ready. If you like to come here for New Years Eve dinner, better make reservations by April as they get booked quickly. If you don't have a reservation for New Year's Eve, expect an hour to an hour an a half wait after 5pm. This place is one of the nicer independently owned restaurants in the Miami Valley. Absolutely the worst bar-b-que in the US. In fact, it is an insult to bar-b-que to call the cr*p this place serves bar-b-que. Ribs must be left out in the desert they are so dry. Charred bones with what used to resemble pork between them. If I were in need of new soles for my shoes or water skis, I would order their ribs. If anyone tells you this place is any good, I would seriously doubt the credibility of anything else they tell you. I wouldn't eat at this place if they paid me to do it. I didn't discover the Old Hickory until I was almost done with my time at UD, which was actually kind of sad. Everything tastes home-cooked, like the kind of dinner you'd get at Grandma's house. The BBQ is awesome, the steaks are pretty good, and I would buy the house salad dressing by the gallon if they sold it. The Hickory has a retro sort of look, and is generally pretty quiet. Had dinner there to night and ordered the filet medium rare. The steak arrived so overcooked I had to saw on it with the steak knife. No pink in the middle whatsoever. Ordered the 1/2 BBQ Chicken for lunch and it was alright. I called in my order from work and it was ready in 15 minutes. I appreciated their private lot since that strip of brown street can get busy. Easy in and out. The 1/2 chicken came with one side and I choose the green beans. Every thing was fine. The BBQ sauce on the chicken was very "tangy" as some other reviewers have said and it wasn't horrible but it wasn't great. Why a 5 Star? because I absolutely love their house salad! I love it so much I actually ordered a "double salad" for my 2 sides. Keep in mind a "double salad" is a huge heaping bowl of their mouth watering homemade salad dressing (that you can buy and take home and if you do be sure to ask the server how to ask the salad at home as there is a special way). I think I ate a full basket of the rye bread with salt on top. My goodness, that plus the salad is a meal a by itself. This wonderful restaurant is a real throwback experience. The only thing that's changed since 19 and 62 is the prices. You can compare as they have the original menus on the walls. Ribs were great, no fat, pure pork flavor along with the signature Hickory BBQ sauce. I enjoyed the creamy Roquefort dressing along with the dark bread and of course a perfectly done baked potato. We came here for the first time last night. We love the old school atmosphere and the service was outstanding. We got the cabbage roll for an appetizer and we loved it. The bread they brought out was delicious too. After reading the reviews , we ordered the salad with house dressing. It's like an iceberg lettuce salad with a very sweet vinaigrette. I would probably get another dressing choice next time or get it with blue cheese crumbles. I ordered the broiled chicken thinking it was like roasted. When it came it was fried. I really didn't want fried chicken but unfortunately that's what the broiled chicken is. It is very good but not what I wanted. My hubs ribs were good but warning, the sauce is not typical bbq sauce, tastes similar to honey mustard. The steak fries, hash browns and green beans were all good. This is my favorite restaurant. Have been eating at Hickory barbecue for over 40 years. I tease my wife and I have a last meal this would be it. My only complaint are the lines. My favorite are the ribs. I also like the barbecue chicken. Never had the steak but I've tasted my wife's it was very good but not as good as the Pine club. Just had dinner with the family here. I ordered the Barbecued Chicken with a baked potato and tossed salad with the house dressing (a sweet and sour garlic dressing). The dressing was, to my surprise, very good actually. Very subtly sour and the garlic wasn't overpowering at all. The chicken was quite a lot to take in, was extremely tender and perfectly cooked. I attending a business Christmas dinner with a group of people on a Saturday night and, the restaurant was very busy. I ordered a large, medium rare porterhouse steak, steak fries, and a side of mushrooms. When my meal came, my steak was well done, not even close to medium rare. And, it must have sat and waited for the other orders in our group because, it was served to me with the edges actually cool and the overall steak at room temperature. Basically, they ruined a good cut of meat. I can't comment on the steak fries because, our server never brought me any fries. The side of mushrooms were small sliced mushroom pieces that you would expect from a can. Our server worked hard at keeping up with our group but, my meal was terrible. FYI, the person sitting next to me had to send their steak back because it was over cooked and, she waited quit a while for a new steak. That is why I just settled for whatever I got. Needless to say, I won't be going back to this restaurant anytime soon. read more

I've lived in Dayton my whole life and have come here many times and the past. It ad been about 6 years since my last visit. We decided to go back last night. Sat minutes after arriving. Prompt service. I felt a little strong armed by the waitress, as I don't really do salad and hate most dressing.. But I was talked into the house salad and dressing.. To which I was pleasantly surprised was quite good. I recommend it. We also got a Pinot Grigio to enjoy while we waited for our meal. The meal arrived timely. The ribs were fantastic and hash brown nothing short I amazing. I'm happy to report this place has list none of its charm and still has great food. We will return as long as they are open. read more

First time dining in. What a great place. We had a wait and sat at the bar. My drink was great and the bartender was friendly. When we were seated we were greeted right away. Our server was attentive and our drinks were never empty. I got the salad with house dressing. Great and garlicky. Bread basket had salted rye, white and mini bagels. Our food came out and I had ribs and green beans both were very good. My boyfriend got chicken with mushrooms and Steak fries. Fries were crisp and the mushrooms seasoned well. Christ, I hope it was an off day because I, with all truth and honesty say this place has the worst bbq I have ever had. The steak fries were the best part. The pulled pork was half pork half sauce. I'm assuming to mask the taste. The brisket was next to jerky. And I'm not a complainer I swear. Rubber is what I would use to describe the brisket. The ribs were tough and not fall off the bone. A friend and I visited Hikory BBQ one afternoon after work. When we arrived it wasn't very busy and we were immediately seated. We ordered promptly and received our food pretty quickly. We both ordered the bbq chicken and were both quite happy with the portions, flavor, and sides. We ended up trading a few peices of chicken around though because I prefer dark meat and she prefers white. It would be nice to be able to specify that in our order, especially since I prefer the cheaper cuts ! The only reason this would not be a 5 star is due to service. We waited too long for refills, too long to receive a bill, which never really happened. While we waited, several waitresses were sitting down talking in the restaurant. Waiting for shift? On break? Not sure. Our waitress eventually came by and wrote a number down on my placement. Seemed very unprofessional and kinda odd. I have never failed to recieve an itemized bill at a restaurant, even if it was handwritten on a piece of paper. But all in all I'd go back. Just suggest a few small improvements. read more

Disclaimer... I lived in Texas for over 25 years so I have a biased perspective. Hopefully this well be helpful to others regardless. We had a relative from overseas in town who wanted to try some American BBQ. Not native to the Dayton area ourselves, we asked around and was referred here. Normally we make our own but did not have the time this weekend. The place was packed so we put our names on the list and walked over to another pub to have a drink and wait. In the mean time, my husband and made a $5.00 bet. I bet that it would be disappointing but not just by Texas standards. My husband bet that it would be okay, obviously not as good as our favorite BBQ place deep in the heart of Texas, but good. We walked back, got seated right away. First, we all choked on the overly salted bread that was served. The bread itself was freshly baked and could have been wonderful but for some reason it had been rolled in sea salted which covered the crust. After brushing off the salt, it was tolerable. Salads, I tried the house dressing. Oily mess that had too much garlic that someone attempted to cut by adding sugar. Also, I am not a fan of iceburg lettuce, especially the white tasteless cuts. Next the BBQ came. We ordered 2 sides of ribs and 1 chicken. My husband happily dove into the ribs.... hesitated for a moment then dug into his wallet and handed me a 5 dollar bill. Sauce: wwwwaaaaayyyyyy too much vinegar with a sweet kick that was probably the worse sauce I have ever tried. GFS has a better sauce.... sorry. Ribs: undercooked. It is easy to get that 'fall of the bone' yumminess. Not sure why they can't slow cook their meat properly. Finally, please don't serve overcooked veggies. The green beans served as a side should have had a 'RIP' marker as they had been cooked to death. I have a feeling that the person in charge of tasting the food is a heavy smoker as everything that I tasted was overwhelming and unbalanced. Kudos to them though for having such a stellar biz.... not sure how but there it is. I guess it is a 'tradition' thing to come here. Will not be mine, I will not return. read more

the food was hot, fresh and tasty. the toss salad was much smaller than what is served in house. we asked for bagels, extra bbq sauce & cocktail sauce instead of sour cream for a baked potato . when picking up our carry out we even asked the employee if she had included our requested items and was assured they were in the bag. looking forward to enjoying the requested items, instead disappointed they were not included as promised. attention to detail is important, the little things that really are not little do matter. read more
