We come here once a year as we visit Dayton for WGI percussion world championships. This is the fifth year and the food is always consistently good. We see the same staff every year. Food was amazing. Everything was made there at the restaurant. Very delicious! I would choose the orange marmalade over the other jams. They also have daily specials like today was the Caprese Hand Pie and Blueberry Hibiscus iced tea. The thing that threw me off was that the prices were way too expensive for being in Ohio. The prices are comparable to Denver or Seattle prices. Also, the staff wasn't the nicest. They had a really sassy attitude being an hour before closing (even though 3 people came in after me). We stumbled upon the Salt Block and stopped in to get some sweets to go. The location really had a great brunch or lunch vibe. There are a few tables of various sizes and a bar area. We ordered a slice of the toasted coconut cake and a slice of the cinnamon sugar blueberry cornbread. To be fully transparent, we did not eat them until the next day. The cornbread was really good after being heated up and butter placed on it. The coconut cake was dry with a light coconut taste. That was disappointing since I love coconut cake. This is such a cute, nostalgic spot in Downtown Dayton. We stopped in on a whim on a Saturday around noon, and had a very pleasant experience! There is limited seating available, but we were able to snag a table for four right in the front of the restaurant by the window. It did get a little warm by the end of our meal, but it wasn't unbearable by any means. Drinks are served in mismatched, thrifty glasses, which lends itself to the comforting feeling that you're eating brunch at your grandma's house. Our glasses were never empty either, which is a testament to our server's attentiveness (despite the restaurant being very busy!) I appreciate that Salt Block has rotating list of specials in addition to their small menu. Two members of our group chose the Biscuits and Gravy, which comes with a side of thick, crispy bacon. You can select which kind of biscuit you'd like for any meal - the options are buttermilk, cheddar and thyme, or "everything." I decided to order their chicken salad of the week, which was Mediterranean-inspired, and full of bright, herby flavors. I also ordered a buttermilk biscuit on the side, and made myself a chicken salad biscuit of sorts, which I highly recommend. The prices aren't bad for the quality of food you're getting, especially considering this blossoming area of Downtown Dayton. Let me start by saying the ambiance of this location is adorable and the staff was friendly and attentive. A 10/10 experience. I got the Early Bright sandwich and it was very tasty although it was much bigger than I expected. I also loved the specialty cornbread with some butter, which was delightful. The star of the show for me though was the strawberry basil lemonade which was so good I am not sure there are enough adjectives to describe it. We received some serious sticker trauma when menu prices are all appx $15 per entree and the chalkboard special vegetable tart of the day came back as $24 on our receipt and a piece of cornbread was $8. Turned a moderate breakfast into a seriously pricey event. That said, we will be back. Please just post special prices and maybe give a heads up that the cornbread is a large portion and not cheap, especially when we hadn't received the menu yet. We went fairly soon after they opened at 10am and almost all the seats were taken - luckily the guests that arrived before us welcomed us to share a larger table with them; otherwise, would likely would've had to wait a while for our group of 4. We started with the pecan sticky bun - tender bun with tasty, sticky pecans. I had one of the specials - smoked salmon with latkes and horseradish sauce - outstanding dish. Sizeable portions of deliciously smoked salmon with tasty crispy latkes. Horseradish sauce was creamy and brought everything together. I chose a biscuit for my side - the biscuit was tender and flaky. They also have quite the selection of tinned fish, which I've never seen before at a cafe/breakfast spot - my husband was super excited about this and ordered the spicy sardines - definitely higher quality, tastier sardines than I've ever had. All the dishes were beautifully presented, loved the kitschier dishware. The home made deserts were mouth watering; but we refrained (probably a bad move in reflection). This place only has 4 tables but also features a bar with multiple seats. Salt Block Biscuit Company is an upscale diner lunch/dinner restaurant that serves a variety of food centered around bread/salad. It opened recently and the space is not large. When I walked in I was pretty impressed by the ambiance and the decorations and high ceilings. The register is at the front and you pay at the register. There are also things for sale like honey, tea, and tinned fish. I ordered the blistered tomato caprese ($12) This dish was one with salad, bread, and fish ($4 extra). The salad tasted great. There was lots of fresh burrata. Blistered cherry tomatoes baked in the oven - just bursting open and very flavorful. Tasted way better than the regular unbaked tomatoes. Fresh rosemary in the salad. Mild balsamic flavor. roasted garlic was not overpowering and added a lot. The bread was nice and crispy and had the most concentrated balsamic flavor with the sardine. The sardines were good. Better than the typical tinned ones. Service: The water glass was nice looking and unique, and they offered it to me without asking in addition to the unique hot tea I ordered. I realized after the guy who I spoke to was the owner of the restaurant. He was very accommodating and friendly to guests - in a genuine way. Overall total was $20 which is high but this is a good price if you want quality food in Dayton. This is one of the very few restaurants in Dayton that earn my 5 stars for quality and care. read more

We visited Salt Block on a recommendation from our Airbnb host and he was on the money with his praises. We arrived just as the restaurant was opening and snagged one of the 4 tables, but not to worry, there was also a bar with many seats. We watched as many came in to get their take out orders, obvious a favorite among the locals. The restaurant is small, but what it lacks in space it makes up for in service and taste! The food is made on site and fresh, with great attention to detail and obvious pride. I had the tarragon almond chicken salad and it was phenomenal and the portion was quite generous. My husband's choice of biscuit and gravy and potatoes was also delicious and generous, he couldn't even finish it (it was great the next day!). I can't say enough about the blueberry hibiscus tea, I have craved it since having it! While we waited for our food, we enjoyed exploring the vibe of the interior. So much history about the family business, antique dish-ware and decor and so much more. This place is a total vibe! There's something I love about restaurants that play music I'd listen to at home (I.e. indie rock/folk) and serve their food on dishes my grandmother had in the seventies. I also love sitting at the counter and seeing your food prepared and plated. We went on a Thursday around noon and there were only two other couples eating. I don't know if they have another dining room but if not, be prepared to sit at the counter, it looked like there were only two tables. I don't even think I'd try going going during traditional breakfast times on the weekend. I had the pulled pork hash special with broccoli salad and it was, again, like eating at grandma's house - all comfort and familiarity. My kid had one of the Sammie's, which was in reality two sandwiches it was so big and open faced. We also had a buttermilk biscuit to share. Tbh, the biscuit was dryer, more crumbly than I expected, but I'm also not used to eating homemade biscuits. The flavor was delicious and the preserves made it a-maxing with my coffee. We took some desserts to go too. The blueberry cinnamon cornbread was fantastic! Can't wait to visit again and try more things.
