It's YE Gurl @ Salt Block Biscuit Co., Dayton Dayton, we need to talk -- because YE Gurl went on a little Nov. 4th wander through your downtown, trying to get a feel for the actual city, and stumbled across the sweetest little gem: Salt Block Biscuit Co. Picture this: a tiny café tucked into the artsy, alternative side of town, the kind of spot you only find when you're really out here walking. Inside? A large, 1950s-style counter wrapping around the whole operation -- ovens humming, ingredients flying, and a crew of women running the place with the ease and precision of folks who either trained classically or cooked their way into mastery. You could feel there's a backstory here... something like "We left the industry to build the space we wished existed." I'd watch the documentary. Now let's talk food, because YE Gurl came to taste. Portobello Florentine Soup -- $6 Hearty. Homey. Creamy. Thick with mushrooms, a flour + cream roux, spinach, cheese, and herbs. Flavor was there, seasoning was on point -- no salt, no pepper needed. What I did want? A little heat, a little acidic lift, something to brighten that rich base. Still, for six bucks? A win. Paired it with the Strawberry Black Tea (unsweetened) -- $4 which cut the richness just right. Sweet Honey on the Lox -- $18 Now THIS was the moment. A thick, everything biscuit layered with: maple-smoked salmon, boursin, pickled beets, beet-pickled egg, greens, and spicy honey. The biscuit alone? Large and unapologetic -- classic Salt Block flex. The sandwich was flavorful and hefty; so hefty I ate half and tucked the rest away for my beau (sharing is caring but also... survival). The only note? That spicy honey was a touch aggressive for me. I get the concept -- the Dayton crowd probably sees this as edgy culinary innovation -- but I wanted the boursin to have more kick or tang to balance everything out. Oh I also had the Cinnamon Bun - $6 which was okay. I could tell there was good ingredients in it though so not the ugh feeling after say a Cinnabon. And here's the real tea: I noticed the clientele -- mostly older local men -- and it made me think. The food style here is more advanced than the typical café, but I can see how the everyday patron base might keep the menu playing it a little safe. Salt Block has the talent for bigger, bolder plates. YE Gurl's Suggestion: Give these chefs a "stretch item" -- a place on the menu where they can go all out. A seasonal dish. A holiday special. A monthly flex. Let them show what they can really do. Because the bones? The skill? The vibe? Already here. Salt Block Biscuit Co. is one creative spark away from being the downtown Dayton destination.

Food was amazing. Everything was made there at the restaurant. Very delicious! I would choose the orange marmalade over the other jams. They also have daily specials like today was the Caprese Hand Pie and Blueberry Hibiscus iced tea. The thing that threw me off was that the prices were way too expensive for being in Ohio. The prices are comparable to Denver or Seattle prices. Also, the staff wasn't the nicest. They had a really sassy attitude being an hour before closing (even though 3 people came in after me). They kinda made me feel like an inconvenience rather than a customer, even though I bought more food to go.

We stumbled upon the Salt Block and stopped in to get some sweets to go. The location really had a great brunch or lunch vibe. There are a few tables of various sizes and a bar area. We ordered a slice of the toasted coconut cake and a slice of the cinnamon sugar blueberry cornbread. To be fully transparent, we did not eat them until the next day. The cornbread was really good after being heated up and butter placed on it. The coconut cake was dry with a light coconut taste. That was disappointing since I love coconut cake. The location did seem to have a good breakfast or brunch menu.

Came as part of my 5,700 mile food tour. Intrigued by the "Sweet honey on the lox" Everything Biscuit with Chilled Maple Smoked Salmon, Creamy Boursin Cheese, Pickled Beets & Onions, Greens, and Beet Pickled Egg. Finished with Spicy honey. It was a neat combo! I'd enjoy a little more of a crunch element to balance out the soft textures. But the flavors were on point and the staff was super friendly!

Popped in today for our biweekly business lunch. The hamburger lasagna is back on the menu! It is the most flavorful thing ever. Rich savory and salty baked to perfection served with cherry tomatoes and a delicious delicate sauce.

If you're looking for something that's not plain or mundane, you should try the Salt Block Biscuit Company! We stopped for lunch based on the Yelp reviews and I'm so glad we did! It's not a big place but so well worth it to squeeze in! I had the Sow Sammie with a side of cheesy potatoes. Whipped pimento cheese spread piled high on an everything biscuit then topped with thick sliced crispy bacon! Oh, yea! I had the hot sauce on the side and it just made it all that much better! The cheesy potatoes were crispy, cheesy and delicious. (I dabbed some hot sauce on these too!) They are known for their weekly specials and the seafood planks. Oooooo... Yup, as Arnold said, 'I'll be back!'

Let me start by saying the ambiance of this location is adorable and the staff was friendly and attentive. A 10/10 experience. I got the Early Bright sandwich and it was very tasty although it was much bigger than I expected. I also loved the specialty cornbread with some butter, which was delightful. The star of the show for me though was the strawberry basil lemonade which was so good I am not sure there are enough adjectives to describe it. If you are in the area definitely come check this place out.

We walked into this quaint establishment and had a seat at the bar and an amazing time. Everything down to the tea sets and coffee mugs were a special touch. The food was bonkers it was so good! The cinnamon sugar blueberry cornbread was the best cornbread I ever had in my life. It was too much almost. I was able to get the Early Bright vegetarian with zucchini and the special looked amazing. The service was so friendly and accommodating.

Loved it. Adorable shop, friendly service. Excellent portions and menu prices considering quality for everything listed on menu. Highly recommend stopping in for fresh tea, pastry, a brunch. Loved loved the idea of a sardine menu. Chicken salad is everything you could every imagine and more - bleu cheese and candied nuts!? My only gripe - and it's a fairly big one - please post prices for specials on the chalkboard. We received some serious sticker trauma when menu prices are all appx $15 per entree and the chalkboard special vegetable tart of the day came back as $24 on our receipt and a piece of cornbread was $8. Turned a moderate breakfast into a seriously pricey event. That said, we will be back. Please just post special prices and maybe give a heads up that the cornbread is a large portion and not cheap, especially when we hadn't received the menu yet. We were happy to support the small biz but could see many others really objecting to this. All said -- Thank you for bringing a great restaurant to downtown Dayton!

Met some friends at Salt Block in the Fireblocks today. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL flavor profiles in the Waldorf Chicken Salad. The southern peach tea paired well with the light, springy zing of the salad. We were given a sample of coconut cake which I could have eaten for days if I wasn't already full. Seating is limited, but they do offer carry out. We'll be back!

Cute breakfast/brunch spot! Though relatively small/limited seating. We went fairly soon after they opened at 10am and almost all the seats were taken - luckily the guests that arrived before us welcomed us to share a larger table with them; otherwise, would likely would've had to wait a while for our group of 4. We started with the pecan sticky bun - tender bun with tasty, sticky pecans. I had one of the specials - smoked salmon with latkes and horseradish sauce - outstanding dish. Sizeable portions of deliciously smoked salmon with tasty crispy latkes. Horseradish sauce was creamy and brought everything together. I chose a biscuit for my side - the biscuit was tender and flaky. They also have quite the selection of tinned fish, which I've never seen before at a cafe/breakfast spot - my husband was super excited about this and ordered the spicy sardines - definitely higher quality, tastier sardines than I've ever had. All the dishes were beautifully presented, loved the kitschier dishware. Our server was fairly attentive and helpful despite how busy it was relative to how many servers there appeared to be.

Biscuits were dry. If you have "biscuit" in your name, they should be stellar. Everything else was good, but the biscuits are a pass.

My sisters and I went to Vals bakery for breakfast on a recent birthday trip. We heard great things…read moreabout the bakery, and I had it on my bucket list for quite a while. I was even more drawn in by the fact that they specialize in Matcha drinks. I think we ordered about 1/3 of the desserts in the display case. One of my sisters is gluten-free, so she got a gluten-free cinnamon roll from a bakery they they partner with to supply their gluten-free desserts. I forgot to take a photo of the name cards, so I don't remember exactly what everything was called. We tried the raspberry Matcha croissant, the cozy croissant, a honey croissant cookie (basically a cookie made of croissant dough), a cinnamon roll, focaccia, a strawberry mascarpone croissant, a Caprese danish type pastry, a garlic cream cheese danish type pastry, a banana bread iced chai latte, and a strawberry Matcha latte. The pastries were all 10/5 stars-- truly. The Caprese one was topped with the best pesto Ive ever had. The garlic cream cheese one could be eaten for breakfast every day. The loxxy croissant was stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese and was so tasty that my sister who doesn't eat seafood, liked it and said she could eat a whole one herself. Everything bagel seasoning created a crunch on top that was just perfect. The strawberry mascarpone was a personal favorite for me. It just was so perfectly executed and the flavors we're all on point. It had strawberry cheesecake vibes, but the filling was lighter since it was mascarpone. The raspberry Matcha croissant was actually one of my least favorite items, though I did still really like it. It seemed like it was filled with both blackberries and raspberries, but I didn't mind. It was just significantly sweeter than the other desserts and maybe a bit much for me. However, I finished it the next day and really enjoyed every last piece of sugar. I'm thinking maybe in contrast to the other items, I just wasn't liking this one as much, but when it was standing on its own, it was great! The cinnamon roll was everything a cinnamon roll should be! It was even better because they warmed it up for us. The honey croissant cookie was simple and satisfying. I would eat those anytime. Sometimes it's nice to just enjoy a more simple dessert. The focaccia was some of the best any of us had ever had. I tried my sister's chai and thought it was really good, albeit too sweet for me to have ordered myself . Sadly my Matcha was too sweet as well, so I'm not sure I would order another. I was disappointed about that part since it's something the bakery is known for. The outside and inside of the bakery are both really cute! Everything is decorated nicely. They sell a little bit of boutique style clothing and some branded goods near the front. The staff taking our order were honestly not the friendliest, but I will chock that up to us being annoying, taking too long to decide which 10 items we wanted. We let everyone who came in after us go before us, but I'm sure we were still annoying. The staff who took over later in our visit when we went back up to order even more drinks and pastries were very friendly! Overall, a fantastic visit. I am sad to not live closer, but actually that's probably a good thing for my wallet and pant size. If you are in Dayton and considering a visit to Val's bakery, do it. Truly, no way you will regret it!

There is a large indoor seating area. There is some street parking. If I had been parked better I would've lingered. Instead I chose 4 items to take away in a box. I enjoyed everything. They have some really interesting pastries and also the more typical ones. It's on the high $ side. In my opinion it's a treat, a special event kind of place. This is not a get a dozen for the kids ball game kind of spot. Again, just my opinion. I hope to return when I can sit and linger.

The decor has changed since the last time I visited (more moody & cozy color scheme) but it still is and always has been a vibe!!! On my most recent visit I got an iced vanilla matcha with oat milk and an avocado "toast". The matcha was well blended and balanced between the matcha and vanilla flavor. My toast came out as a croissant piled high with fresh avocado, pickled onions, blistered tomatoes, micro greens and everything seasoning! So filling and delicious! I originally sat at a high top table in the front so I could eat and work easier at the same time but eventually moved to the low table conversation area in the back when I needed an outlet (the tall tables in the front by outlets were all taken). I also noticed that on wednesdays-sundays the shop is open until11p and that there are daily happy hour specials from 4-6p with drink and dip specials! Would love to come back one day to check this out! Definitely check out MidDay if you are in the area looking for somewhere to relax, catch up with a friend, work (be mindful of finding an outlet), or go on a date....
