As Dayton locals this is one place we had never been. Since it is so close to Christmas we probably didn't pick the ideal day or time to stop in as the place was busting at the seems. Despite the 45minute wait, which honestly I do not hold it against them, as I said it was Saturday night the food was only mediocre. We ordered the shrimp cocktail, ribs & fries, and chicken with baked potato both with salads. The shrimp cocktail and salty bread was the highlight of my meal. The cocktail sauce is SPICY and not for the faint of heart. But really was terrific. The salty brown bread was different and yummy (I even took extra home). Our meals though we're just eh. The chicken tasted like it was boiled and tossed in the oven and slathered with some BBQ. The ribs tasted boiled and slathered too. We didn't care for the sauce on the food, as we prefer BBQ that is sweeter rather then the vinegar based sauce the restaurant uses. The food overall wasn't inedible, I'm just not so sure it was worth the $58 and 60 minute wait. I do give the place 3 stars though because everyone was friendly, the place is certainly a local favorite (even if it's not ours) and the shrimp cocktail was good. read more

This is my favorite restaurant. Have been eating at Hickory barbecue for over 40 years. I tease my wife and I have a last meal this would be it. My only complaint are the lines. My favorite are the ribs. I also like the barbecue chicken. Never had the steak but I've tasted my wife's it was very good but not as good as the Pine club. The house salad dressing is my favorite dressing anywhere. The bread is also very good. The cocktail shrimp is also very good. read more

My first visit to the Ol Hickory was in the mid 60's and last around 1975 so its great fun reading the reviews. Yeah, the BBW was excellent then and the place was pretty plain inside. Outside, the blue paint made the building easy to spot through the evening crowds on Brown St. Super ! I love their barbecued chicken. It's why I keep returning. Service is decent. It's sometimes hard to get a seat in the place as it is rather small. It's an outdated, old-fashioned, old-school place. If that's what your into, great. The owners play "host" on weekend evenings and can occasionally come off as rude if you're not a member of their "elite" social class. read more

OK so here's the story, order shrimp cocktail shrimp cocktail came out warm, sent it back, order two slabs of ribs and the fried shrimp dinner, ribs were so tough we couldn't even eat them, sent them back, salad and house salad dressing was less than par and not what we remember from years ago, the baked potatoes were good and the fried shrimp dinner was excellent and they charged us $40. Even though we sent everything back the manager still clipped us for $409...absolutely disappointing we will never be back to the hickory barbecue again and we've been going there for years. My dad and I shared a full set of a ribs and the smaller version, ribs dinner, and it was perfect. By far some of the best BBQ Ribs I've had ever. Took a good 10 minutes just to get cleaned up from it all. If i'm ever back in Dayton, I'd be sure to return here. read more

Unfortunately, I was disappointed. This place looks like it has been around for awhile, so I was hoping it was around for a good reason. But, the salad had too much dressing and that set the tone for the rest of the meal. The BBQ had SO much mustard to it. It was just not my cup of tea. Overall I thought the ribs were a little pricey for what you get. The flavor of the barbecue ribs was okay, but they were rather tough. I had to really work to get the meat off the bone. Salad was iceberg lettuce instead of flavorful greens or romaine lettuce. I thought the salad dressing was bland for a bleu cheese. Just ate there. Awesome as always! I had the filet mignon, house salad dressing, and baked tater. Steak extremely tender and I get mine medium well! Hubby had the cabbage rolls which is an old family recipe. Aisha was our awesome waitress who checked on us all through dinner--best service EVER! She deserves a raise! We had our annual Christmas Party dinner last evening. We had a party of 10. Food that our party ordered ranged from Filet Mignon, Barbeque Ribs, to shrimp. All was very good. Only thing to complain about is their soda selection, nasty disgusting Pepsi products. read more

Found this place by accident in April of 2013 as we were from out of town and here for a major event (WGI World Championships). I'm from the South where BBQ IS king and even dives have better BBQ menus than this place does. This place has BBQ in the name, but that's all it has. Only 3 BBQ items on the dinner menu. Had the chicken and it was dry and overwhelmed with some kind of so called BBQ sauce. We NEVER went back nor would we EVER recommend it, especially if you're looking for REAL BBQ. If you're going to call yourself a BBQ restaurant, then your menu needs to reflect it. Just because you've been in business for a long time doesn't mean you don't need to up your game. Service was almost non-existent as well. When you have to go chase a waitress down to get anything, it's BAD and I will NOT leave a tip for such bad service. Been going there off and on for over 40 years...the owner and her husband and son are nice and mean well but the owner's manager-brother in law and a barmaid named Ashley are blatantly rude..(attacked twice now by them). I had dinner and my charge card was declined because my bank account had been hacked...and the barmaid Ashley went off on me in front of the whole bar. The owners husband Gary said to pay it next time I came in. I am a local business owner and longtime customer I should be respected by the staff as the owner respects people... just as anyone should be respected. I went back again and barmaid Ashley was there and attacked me again for it and the owner's manager-brother in law said if I didn't' like it I shouldn't come in when she is there. Terrible customer service. I notified the owners but nothing has been done. Honestly, the food has gone down considerably...filet mignon is not what is used to be...and ribs are terrible...I know a lot of people who have gone there for years and all agree it has gone downhill a lot. Very disappointed that the owners don't value their longtime customers over incompetent family members and employees. Very sadly...after over 40 years I won't be back again...they have lost a lot more than the rude employees are worth. read more

I've gone there several times spent 100 or more on two adults and a child went with my wife one night where is multiple sclerosis said the bar or drinks spent $70 on a meal asked for another drink it took them 30 minutes and we still didn't have the drink. When I mention something to the waitress she acted like a fool talk to me like I was 12 years old my wife walked out the restaurant with her walker shaking uncontrollably because that's what happens when you have MS and you get stressed out we went home. I called them and next day they said they would replace they will give us free drinks well where is the couple months because I have been in big pain and so is my wife, So we asked for the drinks they made us pay for the meal which was $67 we in mind that we are going to eat it anyway they told us we had to wait for Carl the manager which we did politely for 30 more minutes knowing he wasn't coming out. I told my wife they're going to charge for the meal then he's going to come out and say he doesn't remember. Guess what that's exactly what he did will never go back there again, had half gallons of every major liquor sit in my house and a pocket full of money it wasn't any of that it was the principal they can keep that raggedy restaurant to them self the steaks really weren't that good now we go to the Pine club and they know how excellent food excellent service no waiting no nasty waiters or waitresses or bartenders. read more

I grew up in Dayton and unfortunately didn't have the experience of trying out/eating at Old Hickory until the last 3-4 ew years that I lived there. Never knew what I was missing! The BBQ is pretty good, and that salad with the house dressing..I still think about it at times and I've since loved all over the country from coast-to-coast. I'll def. give Old Hickory another visit the next time I am ever back in Dayton. read more
