I can see why this little café is well-liked as the staff was very attentive and the house was gorgeous. I ordered the half turkey sandwich with the basil pesto and the sandwich itself was delicious. The tomato basil soup was just okay for me. I was disappointed in the pasta salad as it didn't have much flavor for me. It was begging for some kind of vinaigrette or any kind of seasoning. I also didn't care much for the potato sticks as I never know how to eat it. They're too small for them to be eaten like fries. Do I put them in my soup? Do I shovel them in my mouth by the spoonful like dry cereal? It's like the bottom of a potato chip bag with all the crumbs. How have I missed eating here? Oh my! I now know better. I went last Friday with a friend. I had the Harvest Salad which comes with feta, almonds, pecans, cranberries and THE Chicken salad. Comes with a side of 2 LARGE slices of warm zucchini bread. I asked for cream cheese for mine. Oh and not to forget peach tea! Yummmmmmmmy! Great food! The chicken salad is one of he best out there. Try the daily soup as well, the Wisconsin Cheese scared me at first thinking it would be way too much, but it's lite and delicious! The zucchini bread is okay, my mother-in-law has them beat.. The hours are not as convenient as I would like, but I guess that's why this place is special you have to plan for it. Finally got to check this place out. They're opened on weekdays at 11 AM and it gets pretty packed even on a weekday. I went on a Thursday before the lunch rush and was able to grab a table pretty quick. Soon the Café was filled within the hour. If you could imagine the cutest cafe, you would be picturing Hickory Street Cafe. Located on the north side of Abilene, it has its rustic image outside and inside it's just as rustic and cute. Their menu is super cheap and they serve specials everyday depending on the day of the week. I got the sandwich and soup special so half a sandwich and a cup of soup along with a slice of homemade zucchini bread. The sandwich and soup came with a small portion of pasta, lettuce and pickles and string potato chips. Zucchini bread came out right away and was delicious. My only complaint was I wish it was warm enough to melt my butter without destroying the bread. I got the Swiss and turkey sandwich on croissant without the avocado bread and it was pretty good, nothing amazing I couldn't make at home but I'm sure the avocado spread would seal the deal. I just can't eat avocados. The soup for Thursday was tomato basil and it warmed my soul for that cold day. I piled on the potato chips and it gave the soup a nice crunch/texture. I loved the atmosphere. It felt so warm and just right. The reason why I'm not giving this place a 5 star would be the slow service. We were given the right amount of attention until the rush came in. We all finished our meal, they even cleared our plates but we weren't able to get the attention of our server for our checks. I had to get up to tell the hostess and eventually ran into her to get our checks. I get that it was busy but at the same time, it's important that we get looked at every once in awhile. I would come again regardless of the service due to it being so busy. It's one of the places in Abilene that give Abilene its charm. read more

We met our kids / grandkids for lunch. This is the most "chick-ified" place I've ever seen....but, as a guy, it was very enjoyable! The girls had a chicken salad / strawberry salad; my son and I had the sausage & green chili quiche. Everything was really good, especially the zucchini bread. I have lived in Abilene for nearly two years and have been looking for a place like this the whole time. My daughter took me there this week and holy crow. IT. IS. AWESOME. Totally not what I was expecting! I had a slice of SUPER GOOD zucchini bread (didn't even need butter or the offered cream cheese) to start, a cup of potato soup (the best I've ever eaten, with or without added bacon cheese and chives) and the sublimely tasty broccoli and cheese quiche. QUICHE IN ABILENE? Yes. Be surprised. For the record, it was so good that within three hours, which was questionably dinner time (4:59 pm? hmmm...) I excitedly pulled out all the leftovers (my daughter's potato soup, my leftover half quiche and my daughters barely-there ham and mushroom quiche) and happily ate them (okay, vacuumed them up, actually). We stopped at the Hickory Street Cafe as we made our way to our new home in Texas. This place was one of my favorite parts of the 5 day trip. Their chicken salad and zucchini bread (both of which they are famous for) were both AMAZING. They even have gluten free zucchini bread, which really made my day. The house is so adorable and beautiful. Their service was fantastic. The southern hospitality was strong there. The ladies working there were all incredibly sweet and accommodating. The food here tastes very good. Before I was vegan, this place was a great eat for many things on the menu especially the chicken salad sandwich. Now I am vegan, and this place has nothing vegan except for the salads (if you cut the scoop of chicken salad which goes on top). They use milk in all of their bread and soups. This is why I gave it four stars, because of the limit of the menu for those who are vegan. If you have any questions, they are very nice and will help you out as much as possible! I had a peach iced tea with my meal and it was so refreshing with a hint of sweetness, it was just what I needed. Aside from the food and the friendly service, the place is decorated as if it were someone's home; so adorable!
