I came here on a Saturday for dinner with some friends. We got there on the early side, around 4 pm and the place was pretty much empty. However, the space was huge and I loved the vibe. There were multiple TVs playing sports which I love. The service was great, the waitress was very nice and accommodating. The menu selection was typical American bar food, salads, burgers, tacos and they had a good drink selection. The biggest downside was the quality of the food. My friends got the Cobb salad and burger which looked fine, but I got the steak tacos which were not good. The steak was too chewy and hurt my teeth when I ate it and the taco dressing was way too thick and not good. I would come back but definitely not getting the tacos again. read more

We had an impressive experience at the Tavern on Saturday. My wife and I arrived and were immediately seated. After ordering drinks, we proceeded to request the Pow Pow shrimp, cedar plank salmon for my wife and fish and chips for myself The shrimp dish was ordered as an appetizer. Our main courses came out first, but our server explained that they came off the grill first and she wanted us to get everything hot. And hot it was. Piping hot, and delicious. The cedar plank salmon was medium well, just as my wife likes it. It was accompanied by a side of sweet potato fries with a dusting of kosher salt sized sugar crystals that augmented the natural sweetness of the fries with a kick of tastiness. She liked the salmon. She loved my fish and chips... and so did I. The dish was delicate, tender grouper. I had expected a beer battered rendition, but in retrospect I think that type of batter would have been overpowering. It had just the right immersion of breading, fried golden brown and seasoned just right. The chips, however, almost stole the show. I was not privy to the preparation, but they appears to be twice fried... once to make the inside meaty and soft, and again to seal the crisp outside. I can't swear to it, but I think it so. Whatever. They were delicious, and enjoyed every bite. And the Pow Pow shrimp were tasty, hot with a kick and well deserving of the name. A couple of discrepancies: *The aforementioned reversal of entree and appetizer, but the fact that everything was hot made up for it. *The menu called for malt vinegar to be served with the chips, but there was none served. These kept it from being a 5 star review. All in all, this visit made up for my previous one that I'll mention briefly here. I'm a retired journalist, and in that vein I need to offer full disclosure. After a less than sterling previous experience and a rather scathing review, Hickory Tavern reached out to us and invited us back. Thank you. I hadn't visited this location in years so I dropped in for lunch. We were seated immediately and the waitress took our order. The drinks came quickly but I can't say the same about the food. I'm only here for a few days and all the places I could choose for my FIRST ever, night in Charlotte, NC, I choose this for my family and me. The building is nice, the band playing was nice, the service and management is horrible! Jontel L, our server, was abysmal. I still paid for what we had and I still tipped her 15%. I'm in the industry. I'm a assistant general manager and bar manager at my own restaurant. So, I understand the hustle. She absolutely did not deserve anything. We left in a hurry. A Saturday night at 8pm and it was not busy at all. First thing I see is hostesses standing around talking and ignoring guests, labor $ killer. Only one host helped us and he went to make sure a table was wiped, but a hostess helped the couple behind us and immediately sat them before us. We sit and our server doesn't greet us right away. In fact we didn't even know who it was. She came up to us like she was a server for a different section. Her demeanor and body language was like she doesn't even want to be bothered by us. Slow walking, no smiling, sat down to take our order. The only time she smiled is when I would smile at her. Drink time was so-so. The ice was half melted, so it must have sat at the service well a while. Appetizers came and the the couple that came after us, but sat before us, got wings too and apparently, our wings got mixed up. Theirs was sat in front of us, on our table, then picked up and served to them. I don't know what the rules are in North Carolina, but that's a no-no in Georgia. The food runner had the ticket in his hand and rechecked right there when she was throwing him under the bus in front of both our tables to act like it was not her mistake but his. My son, fiancé, and I sat and ate with no complaint when ours came out a few minutes later. We were so hungry. We had no app plates, utensils, or napkins. I had to walk over to the server station where the POS computers are and grab a small stack of napkins. We used napkins as appetizer plates. Our food came and my steak, that I ordered, between medium/mid-rare, came out charred and mid-well/well. I always give restaurants a two temp cushion. Charred is fine, but it needs to be warm and pink in the center. My fiancé was very irritated. I went over to the pos and asked her not to ring it in again. I told her we just wanted togo boxes and a check. The manager came and my fiancé, doing his best not to be sarcastic or mean, let the manager know after being served two courses, we still don't have forks. I ate my oysters with the steak knife. He wanted to tear into the server and the manager. We were just trying to have a nice night out since we hadn't seen each other in a month, he didn't want to upset me. The night manager, bless her young heart, had an expression that didn't know what to do. Server, still deflected to the end with no accountability or responsibility. Too bad, I didn't really have dinner. A few wings and oysters. My fiancé didn't have one bite of his pasta he was so irritated. My son packed up his food delightfully wanting to leave. We also wanted to order some other things togo, a Philly Cheesesteak for his lunch the next day. The check could have been way bigger and her tip could have been more that 15%. Service was very good until I met the waitress, she lacked personality and emotion! Seemed like she hated the fact she was at work. Waited 30/40 mins for a salad thats Lettuce was wilted and chicken was burned!! My son got chicken tenders (the same chicken) and they were fine!!! When the food came out, all of the food looked much better the pictures online. When the server came with mine, he stated, " I know that you ordered it medium rare, but we cook the steak in the morning and all we have is well done". I looked at it and it was well done and already sliced into pieces. WTF, did I order a kids meal? So, since I was with a group of 25 and being one of the last to get my food, I did not make a big deal as it will not be my last meal, but it will be my last visit to the Hickory Tavern. My husband and I found this place near our hotel. We went on a Friday night which I think was karaoke night. It was a great time and food was excellent. This is my first time here and I was pleased with every aspect of the service. We were greeted by a wonderful host (not sure his name) but he was an older gentleman who was very friendly and relaxed. Our server was BJ and he was outstanding. His service was prompt but relaxed and attentive to our needs. The food was excellent and presented nicely. I ordered the Smothered Chicken with two sides (rice and broccoli). The chicken was extremely dry and the broccoli had absolutely no flavor, such a disappointment. Just came from Hickory Tavern off of WT Harris in Charlotte nc. Me and my girlfriend walked in to this restaurant around 1:15pm on Saturday Dec 2nd. The hostess was on the phone and ignored us for over 10 mins. We finally sat ourselves at a high table and waited more than 20mins before we just walked out. While looking around another customer was waiting at the bar and walked out with us. A waitress said see you later... The customer we were walking out with said, and I quote, "No you won't!" In a very erritated manner. Not sure if there was a manager there, but it was the epitome of bad customer service. Rates up there in my top 5. I do not recommend going to this restaurant, and will never go there again! read more

Overall the food was average. Definitely nothing to write home to your mom about. We arrived shortly before the dinner rush apparently. We were seated quickly but the hostess set us right next to an older gentleman who was reading. And out of all the empty tables - I didn't understand why she did that. I had a kid with a tablet. I think understanding your customer is important but whatever. We ordered a couple of appetizers to start - the tuna poke and onion rings. Okay - for $12 I was mad about the tuna poke serving. It was legit small. Taste wise it was okay. Not a lot of seasoning. The onion rings were okay too. (I think you'll here that about most of my food). It came with a little tiny cup of dipping sauce. We asked for another and never received it. My son's kid meal sweet potato fries had some kind of simple syrup glaze on it. Yeah, he wouldn't eat it. I tried it and it just didn't need it. Sweet potato fries are naturally sweet - why ruin it and make them soggy and add unnecessary sugar? I went with the honey bee sting chargrilled chicken wings with a side of broccoli. I think the plain steamed broccoli was the highlight of my meal. I had two friends tell me how amazing these wings were - yeah no. They were pretty bland. My man ordered lemon pepper chargrilled wings and they were completely inedible. Super salty and gross. We attempted to complain to the server about it - but he brushed us off. We waited a good 15 minutes just to get our check after we asked for it. And then our server wouldn't even get the payment. Some lady came to our table and snatched it from our table. I came here today for a business lunch after a client meeting nearby. I ordered the power bowl, which I've had many times at the Steele creek location. It is supposed to have broccoli, which it didn't. And it was mostly warm yellow rice, which had undercooked clumps stuck together. The dish didn't taste good. My associate ordered a Caesar salad with shrimp, which came with salmon. I asked for avocado on the side, and the server came back with one slice in a tiny cup. I left hungry. read more

First time visit. Unfortunately, we picked a bad night as there were only three servers on a Saturday night, with half the dining room closed off. The hostess gave us a bad quote for the wait time, leaving us near 50 minutes against the states 20-30, while a group of men brushed past us and basically talked their way through the wait list to go get immediate service. Eventually a manager had to come over and do her best to stabilize the dining room and bar, and personally sat my wife and I. This is not an attack on the staff or the team; they were visibly stressed out, overworked, and hard put against some absurdly obnoxious clientele. It wasn't my server's fault that the bartender took over 30 minutes to pour two beers, and it wasn't the bartender's fault that she had a crowd of very rude men overloading her station with order after order. The food actually wasn't bad at all, and I can see the potential in the place, this was just a very poor snapshot experience. Get some more bodies in there, or you will lose what few staff you have left. read more

I have been to this restaurant a few times and generally it's pretty solid. Tonight, not so much. We (three adults and 2 kids) were seated about 7pm, about five minutes after we arrived. The host, a 72 (he told us) gentleman seated us, explaining that they were short staffed and that is why he, a 72 year old man, was working tonight instead of the 18 year olds who didn't show up to work. He may or may not have also issued the standard "nobody wants to work anymore" line, but I can't be sure. We waited about ten minutes for our next contact, a harried server who explained to us that they were short staffed. She took our drink orders, and the sodas arrived without much trouble, but the bar drinks, two bottled beers, took another ten minutes to arrive. The server returned with the beers and an apology, explaining that they were short staffed. She took our food orders. Twenty minutes go by. Half of our table's food arrived with a promise to be right back. Five more minutes, one more meal arrives with an apology and a promise to be right back with the fifth and final order. She explains they are short staffed and there's a really large party making her very busy. Five more minutes. She comes back and apologizes. She said the final meal will be right out. I point out to her that we don't have napkins or silverware. She apologizes, but seems a little put out, as she was on her way somewhere else, but goes to get the silverware. When she returns, she apologizes, explaining they are short staffed. At this point, I ask if I can speak with a manager. My kids are appalled, and call me a Karen. This might be the first time in my life I've asked for a manager, and I didn't do it in a shitty way, and my husband made it clear it was not a reflection on her. The manager comes over, and I explain to him that it's now been 40 minutes, we only just now got silverware, and one of our party still doesn't have his meal and the side salad I had ordered was also missing. The manager apologizes, explaining they are short staffed, and claims that someone took off with all their silverware and they "literally had to run to Walmart" to get more. He tells us he will take care of the bill, get a free round of drinks, and "get those tacos going right away" (suggesting to me that the order has been entirely forgotten and no one had been following up until this point). The rest of the meal finally comes. The food is good. When the bill comes, my friend's bill has not been "taken care of". The manager is walking by so I wave him over. He immediately guesses that the bill was not comped. He takes it and returns with a new one for our friend. (Please note, our friend was the one with all of the inconvenience and I did NOT ask for anything free. After it was offered and not provided, that is when I brought it up. I also did not ask for or expect anything else to be free for myself.) That free round of drinks never materialized, but I didn't mention it. So...two stars. The food was good and the staff was friendly and apologetic, but too many apologies and excuses start to wear a bit thin. The "short staffed" explanation gets old too. The restaurant looked fine, but the food was terrible and the server stole money. I wouldn't go here again if you paid meto. I was a server for many years and I would never steal from a customer. She decided that I didn't need my change and only brought me the bills. She also brought me a $10 bill instead of breaking it because she assumed I would give that to her even after stealing from me. I still gave her over 20% tip(luckily, I had singles) because I don't tip any less, even if the service is terrible. My daughter and I waited for a very long time to get her to take our order after telling her that I needed a couple of minutes. Her initial response time was pretty ridiculous so we weren't really looking at the menu. we got seated and told that the server would be by any minute and it was legitimately 10 minutes just to get our drink order. It just seemed like we had been forgotten and I almost left. The restaurant was not busy at all, so I'm not really sure what she was doing, but she did not seem sober. It seemed like her teeth were falling out of her mouth, so I'm assuming drugs. Fun times. We barely ate any of our food and took it home and gave it to our dogs. read more

The majority of the menu items are bar foods and sandwiches, which is fine and expected from this type of establishment. Unfortunately, when you're craving a menu item they no longer carry even though it was a popular seller, it makes me like the chain a bit less. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and we were seated promptly. Our waiter was a rockstar, she got our order correct and came to check on us multiple times. Please ask for Emma. It wasn't busy on a Tuesday which was pretty good. Now for the food, we started out with the Spinach & Artichoke dip, the chips was a little bland, I'll give that a 5/10. Now for the entree, I order a Mushroom/Onion/Swiss Burger, it took about 15 minutes to get our food which was a big deal, because we doing our best to carry our conversation through the loud music (again it wasn't busy Tuesday night), I'm not sure if the music was extremely loud for others or we were seated literally under the speakers but overall it was difficult to hear one another even though, we sat next to each other versus sitting across. Back to the food, when my food arrive and I ate the first bite and then, I was highly disappointed, like terribly disappointed...there were no flavor or salt in that burger, just a whole bunch of grease and onion flavor a 3/10. For the final review the freaking "Tavern Rum Punch", I'm not sure because I order from a table so I I don't see the bartender making the drinks compare to being at the bar but it was absolutely a mock-tail drink(I ordered a cocktail drink), my girlfriend, who doesn't drink much, tried it and confirmed they were no rum/alcohol in that drink, a -0/10 in my book. My experience wasn't the best and I typically don't provide review on bad engagement with restaurants establishment, but for this, I had to warn the masses.
