This was such a lovely dinner experience! The restaurant/cellar is small but not too cramped, and dimly lit but very lively. Perfect for a small group get together or a date night. The staff were extremely kind and friendly, and they even brought us free dessert for our anniversary! The food was nice, especially the shareables. The truffle fries and gyoza were both great, and the cocktails were delicious!! For mains, I had the scallops which were perfectly cooked and delicious (but portions were unfortunately small), and the NY Strip Steak was solid. Great hidden away gem downstairs. Apps: Short rib dumpling (gyoza) was great. Not so the duck flatbread. Entrees: very good medium rare filet (not the best ever as some have said--but a solid choice). Scallops and sea Bass were both very good. The risotto was excellent. And the Brussels sprouts as well. My partner and I made reservations on New Year's Eve and we were very happy we choose this establishment. I recommend giving yourself at least an extra 10 minutes to park. We were able to find free parking about four blocks down, but that just meant we had to walk. There are parking garages around if you prefer to be closer. The restaurant is in the basement and has speakeasy vibes. Our waiter was knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. We wanted to order so many things but ultimately went with the scallops, risotto, grouper and Nutella cheesecake. The grouper was definitely the star of the show, I was dreaming about that pesto rice for days. The Nutella cheesecake was also lovely! The only complaint I have (which is very small) but I wouldn't recommend ordering a coffee. I normally get one after every large meal but the coffee was burnt and inedible. Although they're known for their steaks, I decided to take a risk and I'm so glad I did. They were seasoned to perfection! I even let my friends try them, and they were wishing they had chosen the lamb instead. The second time I returned, my girlfriend and I were celebrating our two-year anniversary. We decided to share the Kansas City Strip, and it was more than filling for the two of us, especially with the sides. I loved having the opportunity to try different cuts. While the steak was flavorful and delicious, I must admit the lamb chops are still the best choice in my opinion. This place is perfect for a date night or a special celebration. It's dimly lit and very intimate don't let the sports bar above throw you off, as this space is the complete opposite. Before we left, our sweet server even surprised us with an anniversary dessert. The small touches really do go a long way. She also gave us a sneak peek into the original cellar, where they store an impressive beer collection. I thought it was fascinating to see that regular locals have their own lockers where they can keep games and snacks for whenever they stop by. The vibe of the place is historic and cool, the staff is always fantastic, the food is always incredible, the drinks are spot on. Tonight was no exception. I took my parents here when they were visiting from out of town and honestly didn't have a great experience. The food was fantastic but the service was poor. They have a ton of cocktails on the menu but nothing is brand name so it is very difficult to tell what the liquor will taste like. They said that they have 300 beers on tap and wine options but the server was no help trying to help pick options. We would tell her brand name things we liked and she didn't know what they have on the menu that would compare. I think the drinks are extremely overpriced at $17 and they don't even fill the cocktail glasses all the way like they should. It seems like they're making all the money on booze. The Cellar is such a fun little find. While the upstairs of Duckworth's is your standard pub, the downstairs has a low-lit and cozy speakeasy vibe. They offer a great list of craft drinks and beers. They were able to accommodate us, but the party of four who walked in ahead of us had to wait at the bar upstairs for about 15-20 minutes. The Cellar was definitely a big surprise...a true speakeasy in the basement of a massive sports bar. I sat at the bar on a Sunday evening, which was a real pleasure, since the bartenders are incredibly skilled, so sitting at the bar was more like being at an open kitchen. Myriad ingredients, mixers, fruits, syrups, and spices expertly blended into libation works of art. The guys were also really cool, solid banter and even answered a few drink-related questions. I had the burger...which generally goes one of two ways at fancy steakhouse-style establishments. Either it's mind blowing, or it's massively overhyped and incredibly average. Sadly, the latter was my opinion of The Cellar Burger. Oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained. This is the kind of place I would definitely go back to, tho. I found this restaurant and was very interested in going, then a friend recommended it, so I decided it was a must while visiting Charlotte. While researching I did come across a statistic stating this was one of the top date restaurants in Charlotte, but I didn't realize we would be the only guests with children. Thankfully our children are mature for their age and have a very adventurous palete, but it did feel slightly odd having them there. I did catch that vibe from the gentlemen at the hostess station, as we walked down the stairs, he definitely acted as a gate keeper, but we were on a mission to try all the appetizers I had seen on the menu, so I was not going to let his disapproving attitude deter me! Thankfully he was the only negative person we experienced (in all of Charlotte). Our waitress was so sweet and was very attentive. I am sure it might have bothered her also that we were just getting an abundance of appetizers (with children), but she played it off well! Now let's talk about the appetizers! The risotto has not left my mind in over a week. The flavor, the texture and surprisingly a decent portion, I highly recommend it! The short rib dumplings were very flavorful and definitely a hit with the kids, we ended up putting in an extra order of those. The bao buns were oh so soft and very flavorful, but we were not expecting the spiciness. I was super bummed to find out the peach flatbread was no longer on the menu, but I survived! Finally got a date night! We chose The Cellar because of the cool prohibition-style menu. I was hoping for a happy hour, but didn't see one. I liked the dim lighting. It felt cozy. We got there around 5pm, and it was pretty empty. I actually liked that a lot. Our server Isabele was amazing. She walked us through the menu, but I had already checked it out on Yelp. So I had a game plan. I was super excited to see Cakebread wine on the menu. Where I'm from, it's hard to find and way more expensive. Isabele gave us a tip, that it's at the Total Wine nearby. That's officially my souvenir for this trip! We ordered the charbroiled oysters, sea bass, and the Cellar burger. The oysters were awesome. So awesome we ended the night with a second order. The sea bass was next level. Flavors worked really well together. If I could tweak one thing, I'd move the tomatoes to the side. Just a texture thing. The burger? Super tasty. Another flavor win. Located in the lower level floor of Duckworth building, the Cellar is a stellar dinning spot in the area. It's very popular, reservations highly recommended. We got there an hour before our reservation, but luckily got open spot at the bar. Got to witness some magnificent bartending skills as they prepared a variety of drinks for the guests. I tried the berry lemon drop and cucumber highball, both were such good drinks. Food wise we ordered plenty of dishes. Grilled oyster was fantastic including the side of bread. Scallops were so soft and moist. Duck confit was cooked perfectly. And finally I had the 14oz Prime NY strip, a huge piece of steak perfect seasoning. The service was great. We were 1 hr early than the reservation time because we were starving, the hostess offered sit by the bar or wait another half hour. So we just sat by the bar. Food is wonderful!!! We had the baked oyster apps and tuna tartar. The oysters were farmed oysters and nicely prepared. I would suggest preparing and serving the oyster on the cup shell and not on the flat or top shell. Seemed we got served 3 oysters split in half on the cup and the flat shell to fill 6 on a plate. (Not cool, cost them a 5 star, hopefully it was just mistake in the kitchen) Tuna was sushi quality and consistent with some nice winter bluefin tuna that is available at a premium. I had a perfect temp NY strip, really really good. Seemed like a high Choice that was cooked perfectly! Great Steak! As expected, their wine list is exceptional with many reasonable choices. The bacon and risotto came out quickly and was really surprised at how good the risotto was! Loved the fresh charred corn in it. Bacon was good too and came with a side of dijon mustard. The pork buns were very disappointing. The buns were incredibly dry and inedible. The truffle mac and cheese was absolutely delicious, my favorite of all the dishes, and a huge portion for the price. The menu is great and the service is awesome. I was with a group, so we got to share a variety of appetizers. Everything was tasty and could be shared by between two-to-four people. So, order up! The fish of the day was halibut. They prepared it perfectly, seared on one side and tender throughout. While I didn't have drinks this time, the wine, beer, and cocktail menu is impressive. The ONE drawback is the noise level. At one point it was so loud, I got out my decibel reader and found that the noise peaked above an aircraft engine or chainsaw. Noise builds noise, when you can't hear, you shout. When they can't hear, they shout. It was loud. Food = amazing Service = awesome Ambiance = could be better - noise dampening tiles on the ceiling might help? I don't know. Obviously, some buzz is great. Unfortunately we were seated beside a very loud young man but thankfully that only lasted about 25 minutes. Also, book early if you want to steal a little bit of quiet. Our reservation was for 6:15 but by 8:00 it was pretty busy as you can imagine. And this was a Monday. Noise level was still manageable and the space is intimate. I loved my drink - I ordered Where There's Smoke - so so good. Tried various apps too - the caramelized Brussels sprouts, pork steam buns and short rib gyoza dumplings. I really wanted to try the calamari salad but they had just taken it off the menu and hadn't updated the online version. Food came out as it was ready, and everything was nice and hot.
