Our table of four rolled up right before closing (15 min late to our reservation) and we were able to be seated with a gentle reminder that the kitchen would be closing soon (totally understandable). We were taken care of swiftly and didn't feel rushed at all (we tried to be considerate. We were one of two or three tables at this point of the night). I've had takeout from here before and liked it (one of the Thai dishes). My veggie sushi roll when I dined was perfect. Service was perfect. The only thing I wished for was a few more vegan options on the menu as I expect a little more variety at an Asian fusion restaurant. I chose this place after eating at the Deejai Thai food truck at Armored Cow Brewery the previous Friday. When we arrived, I told the hostess that I was back for more after having such a great experience with the food truck. She informed me that the restaurant was not affiliated with the food truck, but added that they were even better. I ordered the same dish I had at the food truck, Drunken Noodles with Chicken, and my boy ordered a ramen soup of some sort (I can't remember the exact name). When the food arrived, I wasn't overly impressed. My dish wasn't bad, but it just didn't have the same flavor or wow factor as what I had from the food truck. My boy wasn't a fan of his soup either. He commented that the ramen noodles looked like the kind you can buy at the grocery store. The flavor wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good enough for him to eat much of it, and he didn't even want to take the leftovers home. Overall, I'd call it an average dining experience. I've been to Deejai's twice and have enjoyed both experiences, however, this last time I tried the Salmon Curry for the first time and I just have to say....if you were even thinking about, JUST DO IT! It was SO delicious and flavorful and I'm so glad I listened to our waitress who suggested it. I will note that if you don't like spice, this is not the dish for you. But if you do, you will love it! It has just the right amount of kick! I also got some edamame and Thai tea which was really delicious! The staff is extremely nice and welcoming and it has not been super busy the times I've gone, but they do take reservations so I would still recommend to do so! We have been to Deeja multiple times and have always really enjoyed it. The parking lot is small but there is also plenty of free street parking. It is a few blocks away from all the bars so I enjoy that it's away from the crowded streets but also close enough to easily drive to a bar or small concert venue. In the past, I have ordered their salmon curry which is phenomenal but expect to take some home because it's rather large. Fantastic Thai red curry. My only downside is you cannot order the red curry to go, only in sitting down, online menu error. It is a large portion, which I always take home leftovers, literally about half of it. The Red Curry does not have peas which I like, I hate peas. They ask for your desired spice level, I ordered a 3 which is a good, light, mouth-burning spice. If you cannot handle spicy I would order a 1 or not order the red curry at all. Or do and build your spice tolerance. Very attentive staff, almost too attentive. I want to be left alone sometimes. Their spring rolls were also tasty. We had a Boss sushi roll 10/10, the Thai Wings 10/10, the Drunken Noodles with Chicken was 10/10, & the star of the show, The Salmon Curry 12/10 Best Curry I've ever had (I don't eat Curry a lot because it's normally too strong for me) This curry was perfect. If you like authentic Thai food, STAY AWAY!!! While the people working here were very friendly and tried to be accommodating, they could not make up for the poor quality of this food! My wife is Thai and I have lived in Thailand for many years, so we know to set the bar lower when eating Thai food in the states. We usually get simple dishes like somtam and moo ping so we won't be disappointed. It could not have been worse. The papaya salad tasted nothing like what it should be. No sign of chili, no fish sauce, tasted from tamarind and soooo much sugar! Truly awful. The moo ping was not fresh and we had to request sticky rice, the rice we were given was not sticky rice. The taste of the pork was bland and over cooked. We also had a pork noodle soup dish which once again had no flavor. I requested Thai spicy... I got bland chicken soup. When I asked for chilis and some vinegar to help the taste, all I got was puzzled looks. The bar manager came over and was very nice and apologetic about the quality. She offered to take off the cost of one of the dishes which she did. Actually I had no problem paying for what we ordered, but for sure we will never be back. Walking into the restaurant, the ambiance was cozy and hip...just what I'd expect from a NoDa restaurant. We were seated in a cozy corner with our large family group and were quite comfortable. Our waiter was super friendly but the service from the bar and kitchen seemed unreasonably slow given the number of people in the restaurant. Flavors were lighter than expected - almost to the point of questioning whether spices were used - especially for a Thai restaurant. Our of everything I tried, I recommend the tuna tataki. The food here is decent but many mistakes were made, to the point that I feel like we got unlucky? Keep that in mind as you read this lengthy review. We got the papaya salad, Thai style, at spice level 3/5. To our understanding, Thai style is a savory dish... it came out sweet without any spice. We also got the BFF 2 roll, which came without cream cheese. This is the most egregious error in my opinion. Forgetting a sushi roll's cream cheese is wild! The Hawaiian poke bowl was meant to have spring mix for its greens, but had some pretty pale lettuce leaves instead. Lastly, one of our orders was prepared, but forgotten until we reminded the staff. Our server was nice and addressed the issues we raised so I'm not disparaging the service. Just be aware that dishes may come with missing or incorrect ingredients, judging from our limited experience. Ever since NoDa been gentrified, there are not a lot of parking for eateries, one of the good things about Deejai, beside their good food is they have parking space available. Food, yes, all kind of Asian flavors, mostly Thai style I think. Also they have Sushi too. Sushi is pretty common in Charlotte area, but good bowl of noodles are harder to get. Anything I try so far is good, especially the duck curry. Very popular. Other soap base dishes are good too. Our first visit to Deejai Noodle Bar was a great experience. I loved the environment. It had comfortable seating and a casual feel. Our server was friendly and very accommodating. I was really impressed with the presentation of the food. All of the sushi dishes were plated to perfection and you could really tell how much time and focus was put into how the dishes looked and tasted. My boyfriend and I shared the cashew chicken and noodles plate. The flavor was fabulous but was just a tad bit on the spicy side for me. They offer a scale of spice which ranges from 0-5. I typically do fine with medium heat at most places, and with that being said, I'd probably stick with the 0-1 levels. "Deejai" also means the equivalent of "be well" or "happy" in Lao so it was interesting for me to scan the menu at some lao offerings like kao piuk sen, kua gai and lao style papaya salad to make a few things. On another day I would've wanted to try it out! Never enough lao restaurants out there. We went with ping moo or grilled pork and sticky rice for appetizer with the sushi boat chef's choice for the both of us to share. The appetizer was good! We ate it like a wrap and the sauce offered was something like a fermented balsamic vinaigrette flavor. The sushi boat was impressive and came out with sparkling lights to leave an impression. The proportion between rice to fish was good and everything tasted fatty, smooth and fresh the way I like it. Service was ok little slack but when you ask for it they'll bring it. Had a nice Cabernet , my friends had a Riesling and traditional Singha beer . Yelp check in gives you free edamame app! They add chili oil to it which was a Nice touch and different. Or you can just get it plain. The green curry mussels were A game ! Wow that sauce was so good and had a nice kick to it. This is my second time coming to Deejai Noodle Bar and I am still confused if I love it or okay with the food. Upon entering, my friend and I are greeted by the hostess, and the environment was relaxing but noisy. Our waiter was really sweet and was very patient with us. This time around, I gave the sushi menu a try. The jalapeños hamachi was sweet and spicy, the salmon appetizers were tender, and the free spring roll appetizers were good. The NODA Delux combo... I guess you can say you get what you paid for. The sushi is mediocre, nothing too extravagant. On the other hand, my friend ordered their kasoy and it was a hefty bowl. The kasoy noodles looked chewy and savory. My only complaint would be not enough soup for the kasoy (sorry no pictures) Not sure if I'll come back to this place, but if I do I'll give the Asian food another try. The food was a miss- I will take some responsibility in going to a place with Noodle in its name and not ordering noodles however there was a significant amount of space on the menu devoted to the sushi selections. I ordered a combo of rolls- both of them involving shrimp. There was a sliver of shrimp in the crunch roll- there was a lot of filler crunch- and in the shrimp tempura roll, there were some tails hanging out one end but that was it. Ordered delivery from here because my partner wanted Thai and I wanted sushi. I actually had a hard time finding rolls that I wanted on their menu. Most of them have tempura, cream cheese, spicy tuna, and/or a ton of sauces. I understand that some people like that style of sushi, but it's not my preference. In the end, I went with the dancing eel roll and BFF 1 roll (cucumber wrapped). Sadly, both rolls came slightly wrong. The dancing eel roll had cream cheese which was not listed in the description and was exactly what I was trying to avoid. And the BFF 1 roll was missing yellowtail. This place was absolutely amazing! This was my first time here and the waitstaff greeted me so warmly and help me through the menu. I'm mostly plant based and almost all the food options can be made vegan. I started off non vegan with the combo sushi roll crunch shrimp roll & shrimp tempura roll. If you like real Thai food don't eat here. Red flag # 1 they spell Khao Soi wrong. Red flag #2 they don't have a spice tray. If you want generic tasting food being touted as Thai, this is a decent choice, the staff is super nice. I ordered basil rice dish, the dish was doused in some kind of sauce (not normal) the rice was quite soggy and soft, and I had asked for a spice level of 5 (the max) but it had no spice (it was so not spicy I'm willing to give grace that they forgot). I used to live in Thailand for 1.5 years. I don't expect every restaurant serving Thai to taste like it came from straight from Thailand, but it is at least expected it attempt to come as close as possible to recreating the tastes and flavors. I came to Deejai noodle bar two weeks ago with one of my girls. It was fantastic! Their sushi was quality. I ordered the jalapeño yellowtail hamachi for an appetizer. AMAZING! I ordered Tom Yum Tofu soup, equally as good! My first trip here was fantastic, I brought my boyfriend here later in the week only to have an opposite experience. We were seated promptly before our reservation time and were told that it would take a minute for our server to get to us, which is totally fine, we were the early ones! When our server gets to our table, I order a hibiscus sweet tea. I had this hibiscus sweet tea earlier in the week while I was dining here with my friend. Our server said that she didn't know if she had that so she would go ask the bartender. I unfortunately had to remind our server three times about my drink, ultimately never receiving it & no communication as to why. We ordered edamame for an appetizer and I ordered the yellowtail Hamachi. The edamame hit the table but the yellowtail Hamachi never came. My boyfriend ordered the drunken noodles and I had ordered the sushi roll of the day! It takes about 20 minutes for my boyfriends food to hit the table. After 15 minutes had gone by and I hadn't received my sushi, or a yellowtail Hamachi appetizer, I asked our server if there is something wrong with the sushi bar. After another 20 minutes, she returns to tell us the sushi bar is backed up. We were getting tired and just wanted to go home, I asked her if she could ask the sushi chefs just to put it in a to go box. I get home starving excited to finally eat some food, only to be extremely disappointed by the lack of freshness of the roll.
