Well, we have been regulars at Hickory for quite some time. The atmosphere is comfortable and casual and the side of Spartanburg they're on has a distinct vibe compared to downtown. But it's a down-market vibe, and the food has always been just ok, and the drink prices from ok to high, especially beer. But it's something different. They just came out with new menus, and most of what we liked is gone(Shrimp & Grits??), and their new prices simply don't make sense given the mediocre food they serve. $17 for a pretzel appetizer? $16.50 for a Reuben? $3+ price jumps on some entrees? And if it was great food that would be one thing, but it's merely acceptable. I know costs are going up, but look around and try to be more creative in delivering value in your lane. You're not The Kennedy or even Main St Pub. You're more of a bridge between NuWay/Ike's and those higher quality places. For now, you're off our rotation unless we hear some positive feedback that makes us curious. Good bye. read more

We visited on Sunday, 3/1/2026, at approximately 1:15. The hostess seated us, and the waitress was very attentive, taking our drink orders promptly. The waitress did an excellent job taking our order and checking back with us. My wife informed the waitress that we also wanted to place a to-go order. The waitress said, "Would you like to put that order in now so you are not waiting forever?" We finally got our food 45 minutes later! We have eaten here several times and, on occasion, have had issues. The food is ok, but honestly nothing special, and a bit overpriced! read more

Was in town for a youth sports event with parents and players. We had our first game in the evening and looked for a place to eat last minute. I called and spoke with the manager on duty and they opened up their enclosed patio for our large group (19 total), with only 20 minutes notice! The enclosed patio had multiple TV's showing the games we wanted, and plenty of space heaters in the ceiling to keep the entire space warm in a low-30's winter evening! Our server was excellent. He kept the drinks coming for the parents and was attentive to the players (17-18 yr old high school boys), ensuring their apps came out quickly and that they had plenty of water refills soon as their cups were empty. The group ordered from across the menu and everyone was happy when we left. The menu offering was typical, solid bar food. We ordered 2x pretzel bites and 1 order of fried pickles as an app. We had to order a second round of both based on how fast they disappeared! We even tried the chips and queso with everyone ready to laugh about how bad they would be (given we are from Texas), but we were pleasantly surprised. Chicken wings, fish & chips, quesadillas, and burgers were all good. A few boys ordered the Carolina Cheesesteak and said it was, 'mid'. But they cleaned their plate so..... So upon entry the hostess was super nice but when she went to seat us she dropped the menus off at a table and left before we could even get to it. Then we waited awhile before we had someone come to take our drink orders. The server was nice. Drinks came out fine and we ordered food. The food comes out and it looks appealing but the wings were rubbery, I ordered a jerk wing but it tasted like teriyaki, which I dislike. They brought the food out in a rude and matter of factly way, didn't ask if we had what we needed so we had to get ketchup from another table. On Saturday we planned to attend the Spartanburg BBQ Hog Fest for dinner, but could not find any parking, so we decided to try Hickory Tavern. This was a great decision. We were with 2 friends and all agreed we enjoyed our meal and will be back. I had the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and the house fried chips. The best PCS I have ever eaten was in Boston, but this one was even better!! Sooo good. My husband had the lemon pepper wings, which is one of their specialities. He is a snob about his wings and he said his were great. Our friends had the quesadillas and each of us cleaned our plates!! The waitress, Ryan, was very attentive, even though she was busy with several tables. The manager came by our table before we left and we extended our compliments. We will be back.. read more

Well....we tried it again last night. It was not that crowded, only one large party. We waited over an hour for our food. Wings under cooked. Several tables just got up and left. Manager did apologize for the long wait. That helps but I'm sitting in view of the bar, watching staff milling around. Problem was the wait between ordering the meal and the meal arriving was close to an hour, considering the place was only half capacity both times makes it hard to justify. This restaurant used to be so good. It was a little high in price range but the quality was worth it. Now it is just called The Tavern instead of Hickory Tavern along with the name change the quality has went way down. The portions are cut in half but the price is the same or higher. I will not eat there again and I used to be a loyal costumer. They no longer let you get salad as a side but want to charge you full price instead of an up charge. It is no good now. read more

We waited for over an hour before getting our food, waitress came by but never offered an explanation of why it was taking so long for 1 plate ( my husband & I shared a philly cheesesteak). Then the waitress came by picking up our empty appetizer plate and took my drink. Didn't ask if I was done so when our food came finally I asked if she took my drink she said yes i thought you were done, it still had drink in it. She said sorry but we were still charged full price for everything. I've worked in the restaurant industry and most people understand if you keep them informed. I ordered thru uber eats and had some problems with the food. The salmon looked like a bite was taken out of it and we just didn't trust eating anything. The portions were very small as well. By the time we got the food (which took almost 2 hours) the restaurant was already closed, so the next day I called and told them about what happened. The manager offered a refund or the option to recook the food. Since we've never been here before and we still wanted to give them a try, so we took the recook. When I went to get the food the manager apologized again and said he cooked the food personally and it should be perfect. I wanted to post on here to say the food was really good and the portions were wayyyy better. The salmon was almost double the size from the night before. I don't know if it was just a bad night, or if we just ordered too late and the cooks were rushing just ready to get off, or even if the driver had something to do with it. Personally, when I order delivery I prefer to have my bag closed somehow so I know at least it wasn't the driver getting into the food. Only suggestion would be to possibly staple the bags closed before sending them out. Other than that everything was great! I forgot to get the managers name but he was amazing!! It's hard in these times to criticize all restaurants as they have to shift away from their niche to now in addition focus on Togo orders. Because it had been so long since I had eaten there I would not have been the wiser. Unfortunately for you guys I had 2 HT veterans so they were holding you guys to higher standards. We ordered the HT chicken salad which was awesome and the honey mustard was yummy. My sister got the newer salad with the corn, black beans, tomatoes. I think she is still looking for some lettuce. my father ordered the chicken Colorado and while he enjoyed the dish one of his sides was salad and he too is still looking. Apparently we should have had croissants with our meals and we did not. My mother had the fish sandwich and even though it wasn't on the on-line menu we had to call it in and the bartender made it happen. We had to call the order in because we felt like the online menu was short a few key items. A few bugs to work out, but overall a fairly good experience. read more

I never knew this place was here because I didn't see any sort of noticeable sign BUT the food was pretty good. When we arrived we were seated immediately. Our waitress was a little busy that day but still attended to whatever we needed. We got the chips and queso as an appetizer and it definitely was a unique queso as it tasted different than the other restaurants i've gotten it from. It also did not include many chips with it as you can see in the picture so it did not last long at all with just me and my boyfriend. I think next time i'll just pass as it's pretty expensive for maybe 15 chips ~ $8.29. For the meals I ordered the Cobb Salad with no tomato or egg and blue cheese dressing. Everything on it was delicious and i got bits of something a little too salty which might have been the bacon. My partner ordered the "honey bee sting" wing entree with fries and he thought they were great. Also not spicy at all. We were offered a dessert menu at the end but I was ready to leave . Overall it's a very nice place definitely has a lot of TVs everywhere but nice atmosphere and food was overall pretty tasty. read more

Tonight, we came to check this place out. We had a coupon but didn't need it. Tonight was BOGO Burger night! Let me tell you something, this was so good, so delicious, nah, wait a minute, that's not even a good enough explanation. This was on The Diablo Burger loaded with jalapeños, cheese, onion straws and spicy mayo in which I ordered extra Hubby had the Mushroom Swiss burger, yeah I know what your thinking, he's boring but someone has to be. We also enjoyed their spinach dip with chips...so so delicious. So I was told they have specials each day of the week but I'm new here so you'll have to figure that one out when you come. Wing nite, shrimp nite, taco nite. Come on out and get you some. OH, and I almost forgot, for all you sports fans, they have 15, that's right, 15 screens and a fantastic Super Bowl Sunday BUFFET for 30 BUCKS! DETAILS IN PICTURES. Ask for Quenton his service was Fabulous and might I say that the manager, Dustin, was on point! He came to our table to check on us not once but twice. We have dined here a number of times for dinner. The positives: the food is consistently good, but not great. They have a varied menu, so there is probably something for everyone to like. I've never had a bad meal here. The service is pleasant and attentive. The negatives: the dining area is crowded with tables. I often have my chair bumped by the servers or other diners. With so many tv's on the walls, it's hard to look anywhere and not see a football or basketball game. So it's probably the noisiest restaurant in the city. Add to that a very popular and busy bar area. Don't come here if you want a quiet meal out. But, hey, it's a tavern, I get it. Prices are reasonable. The iced tea is so-so. The entire restaurant could use a good cleaning and a remodeling. It seems tired inside. read more
