Awesome! Food was great! It may look like a hole in the wall but it was definitely an amazing place to stop for a lunch on the way down to visit family. We had tamales, fajitas and carne asada and each were delicious. The normal chips and salsa that come with the typical Mexican food were good and not out of a bag or jar so they clearly spent time focusing on the little things as well as the bigger menu items. Servers were attentive and helpful even when the restaurant was busy. They got us seated and had drinks to us quickly. What does eating in a small town mean? Family owned restaurants and good food! Hidalgo's has been around for a long time. It's always busy. Glenda and I had been to a craft show at the fairgrounds, and it was time for lunch. I tried to take her to the famous Owl Pharmacy for one of their great hamburgers, but the grill was already shut down. Now where? Hidalgo's was very busy from the craft show, but we grabbed a table. Chips and hot sauce were the normal good. Glenda ordered chicken fajitas and I got steak ala mexicana. It took a while because they were so busy. Both came out sizzling! Dig in! Glenda loved the fajitas. My order was wonderful. When you cut the steak into bits, and grill it with the onions, tomatoes, bell pepper, and jalapeños, magic begins to happen. This is good place to eat Tex-Mex. Great Texas Mexican food for Texans because we know the difference. Prices are reasonable and the portions or filling. This place radiates the comfort of a grandma's kitchen. Very casual. Friendly service. Good prices for hot food. We always stop here for a quick to go breakfast each time we head on a road trip to Austin. I'm not saying this is incredible food, but as my dad would say "it's not too shabby." I stopped in Hidalgo's for dinner last night. I ordered their Beef Fajitas for One and was not impressed. The meat was very thinly sliced pieces of beef that was heavily seasoned (with something) and flat grilled with peppers and onions. Hoping for actual char-grilled skirt steak, I did not care for their rendition. On a positive note, their guacamole and salsa were both good! read more

Who doesn't like good, consistent Mexican food? That's rhetorical. Obviously only insane people don't like good Mexican food. A couple recommendations: The super fajita burrito plate is really good, brisket tacos are great choice, but I really like the combo plates and dinner plates with the enchiladas, crispy tacos, rice and beans. This restaurant is a staple in Coleman America. If you're passing through, be kind and tip well. These people work hard 7 days a week and have tons of guests come through, especially during hunting season. I'm always amazed at how busy this place gets on normal days. The food is always consistent and usually very good. I do wish they used skirt steak for fajitas, they could be a bit better. Either way, I've not had a "bad" experience here and I hope I do not. I've seen some people get upset when they're not seated immediately, but in their defense their parents never told them the world doesn't revolve around them. Stopped in on the way to Brady for the goat bbq cook off. Place was packed, dove season opened up this week. Service was good a little slow but expected for the amount of people in the restaurant. We had the queso, needs more flavor, taquito dinner, meat was a little bland and the tamale dinner, probably the best of the three. Tamales were cooked good and had good flavor, not to much masa. Best guisada EVER! We stopped here for breakfast on our way back from Colorado. I couldn't decide between Guida and Eggs or Huevos Rancheros. Asked the waitress and she made the great suggestion that I get the Guisada and eggs and she's put some of the (VERY SPICY) ranchero sauce on the eggs. Total winner! Had them make the hash browns extra crispy for the win! Definitely ate too much, but how can you stop eating food this great?? I'm vegetarian but my wife isn't. We found this place while camping on Hoards Creek Lake. They had avocado enchiladas (#52 on the menu), and they were great. My wife had the Mexican Plate (#45), and she loved hers too. The service was good as well. We'll be back the next time we're in this area. read more

After driving hungry for four hours for what was supposed to be a real treat at Underwood's Cafeteria in Brownwood, we were hit with disappointment when we discovered they are closed on Wednesdays. How a mainstream food establishment could be closed on Wednesdays is a topic for a different Yelp review, but none the less, we found ourselves back on the road, still hungry and definitely questioning what are next option would be. As we drove on, I diligently searched Yelp with each passing town trying to figure out what to do for lunch. It seemed that the choices pretty much consisted of Dairy Queen, then there was a Dairy Queen and oh yeah, last but not least, Dairy Queen. Is the Mob in control of the Dairy Queens in small town Texas? Just as I was about to give up and have, you guessed it, Dairy Queen, I found a review for Hidalgo's. I cannot say enough good things about Hidalgo's. It is by no means anything fancy, but I wouldn't expect anything else in a place such as Coleman. The food was simple and delicious and the service was as good as any I've had anywhere. I've had a lot of chips and salsa in my day and I would say this place quite possibly has the best salsa I've ever had. My guess is that this salsa is made from scratch each day using an old family recipe. I will feel better believing that one anyway. As for my meal, as I often do, I reverted to my typical standby of nachos. Yes, nachos at their essence are very simple and very hard to screw up. That said there is a definite distinction between nachos that are just okay and ones that really make your mouth water. The nachos at Hidalgo's are definitely in the upper echelon. In addition to the nachos I tried a bite of a taco and an enchilada off of the combo plate and both were quite good as well. I am not sure when I will ever have a chance to visit Hidalgo's again, but would definitely make it a priority lunch or dinner stop if I were in the area. read more

We had lunch here on Saturday, in between the morning and afternoon hunts. The place was pretty crowded; looked like a mix of locals and hunters. I ordered the same thing as last time. I'll start by saying my family has always enjoyed stopping in when we come to town. Food's always consistent and until today the staff has been very friendly. That being said, when placing a take out order today I got a very rude gentleman on the phone. From the beginning he sounded irritated/bothered to be taking my order. When trying to order the enchilada plate that is on the menu he started going off about how many enchiladas I would like. I simply asked how many would typically come on the plate. Very busy place today, but then there are a lot of deer hunters in town. We found out that the Kiwanis meet here. Lots of tables, an impressively large menu of both Mexican and American food items. We were in town for a family funeral and stumbled on this place on the way to the hotel. The service the first night (we ate there twice) was less than stellar, although lunch the next day was much, much better. The salsa and chips are good although they are a bit stingy. I have to say that the meal is the saving grace of this out of the way little "hole in the wall" place. (obviously it was good enough to bring us back again!) The taco meat is flavorful and delicious, the cheese enchiladas absolutely wonderful! The rice and beans even to die for! I so wish this place was in m home town.
