This was a jewel of a find on a trip back from Colorado to our home in Austin. We were about an hour out of this sleeply little town searching for a lunch place and opted for a mom and pop kind of place. Well, we were super lucky to stumble upon Ma's for lunch because chicken fried steak with mashed 'taters, corn, salad, roll and a piece of red velvet cake for dessert. All for about 12$ and it was all delicious. They even have a big 'ole pot of beans, self serve, free with your meal! Dang. I just love these small town mom and pop restaurants. You just don't see this type of home style cooking and value in the big city. Every day they have a different lunch special so if you want the CFS lunch, come in on Wednesday folks! read more

For an old fashion traditional breakfast I highly recommend Ma's CrossRoads Grill, they even have refried beans, tortillas for that Mexican food flair, and for us military and veterans they also have SOS biscuits and gravy, ( all pryer military know what that is). This was our first visit to the Cross Roads Grill. An impressive visit it was. We were greeted at the door and told to chose any table we liked! They immediately Took our drink orders and gave us menus. We took a bit of time to read the entire menu as this was our first visit. We decided to start with fried cheese sticks and fried pickles with Budweiser beer. In about 10 minutes we had both appetizers and beer and then ordered our meals. The timing was perfect and I really appreciated the cooperation between the waitress's in making sure all guest were taken care of rather than ignoring those tables to which they were not assigned. I ordered steak fingers that came with two sides. I chose salad and fries. Oh my lord this meal was wonderful. Hubby had a humongous chicken fry with fixings. Son had the biggest double meat cheeseburger I've seen lately. But, most importantly, the food was extremely FRESH! You just know when you are eating fresh ingredients cooked to perfection. From starting with the fried pickles and finishing with banana pudding we were in and out in under an hour. And if you look at the pictures you will realize that we had enough to take home for lunch tomorrow. I'm excited to return and try the beautiful onion rings walking by. Lol. Do you even know where Santa Anna, Texas is? It's one step below small town. I think there's 2 red lights, or was that second one blinking yellow? But, in all its minuscule wonder, there is some Great eating and shopping here. MA's is about 2 blocks off the beaten path, so you have to find it. A big old plain brown building with a sign. Don't be fooled. Good food is waiting on you inside. Yes, it's got that country friendliness as you go inside and seat yourself. It was full, the waitresses were busy, but she still had time to smile and say hi. What do you recommend? That's easy, chicken fry! A small please, it's lunchtime. We hit the small salad bar which was ok. Well, when the food came out, the small chicken fry covered most of the plate. Add toast, mashed potatoes, and lots of gravy, I'm about to be miserable. The batter seasoning was great, the gravy thick and creamy. Real mashed taters. One of the best chicken fry's in a while. Really good. So I gorged and was happily miserable. Worth it! If you get lost on these Texas back roads, and end up in Santa Anna, Texas, Ma's is the place to be. Forks up! read more

We had a great lunch at MA's CrossRoads while passing through Santa Anna. We sat outside on the porch because we had our dog with us. Every single person who went by greeted us. On the advice from Barbara at the Texas Ranger Motel, we went here for dinner. It was Friday night and we had a bit of a wait, but not horrible. My daughter and I talked about chicken fried steak TOO many times during the drive from Austin to Santa Anna, so we both knew what we were getting. It was a splurge for me, but oh my...was it worth the calories! The steak was literally fork tender and perfectly cooked. In addition to my "I have to eat salad for two weeks to make up for this" fried steak smothered in creamy gravy yumminess, I had a loaded baked potato and green beans. I mean...if you are going to splurge, why cut corners on sour cream and butter. BUT...the green beans were healthy. ;-) Everything was just SO good. My daughter loves fried pickles, so we ordered some as an appetizer. Wow! The order could have served us and four tables around us. The two of us barely put a dent in it. And my 13 year old fried pickle connoisseur? Two thumbs up. And she knows her fried pickles. They were thin and crispy and just down right yummy. If we go back, we will have to see if we can get a half order, or bring a football team to help us finish them. I am so spoiled with Austin's five star dining offerings, but sometimes...you just need some very well prepared comfort food, and this totally hit the spot. And the value? Holy heck! Friday night we had two chicken fried steak dinners, fried pickles, two beers (for me, not the 13 year old) :-) and a soda...our bill was just under $30. I had to make sure they rang up all that we had. We had such a good experience that we went back the next morning for breakfast on the way to camp. It was hearty and very good. We EACH had a plate with 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns and a biscuit with gravy. I had coffee and my daughter had water. It was right at $10. Again, great food at an AMAZING value! I am already planning on going back next year. It works out well...that is probably about the time I will allow myself to scarf another chicken fried steak. :-) The wait staff was prompt in taking care of us in addition to being very friendly and helpful with questions I had about the area. read more

Perfection is the best word to describe the food here. We both had burgers. I had the Monterey and my Husband had the cheeseburger. The fries-are hand cut and homemade!!! the burger was one skillfully crafted. The bun was homemade-not soggy, the patty was juicy and well seasoned, the toppings were perfect and the cheese was as well. what amazed me aside from the flavor was that it stayed together, it did not fall apart so you were able to get that perfect bite. We normally do not eat desserts, but since the burger was above and beyond we decided to get a Italian cream cake and OMG, I regret getting one and sharing! This tasted like it came from the finest bakery and it was so luxurious... I'm so shocked at the quailty from such a small town-coming from someone who lives in a small town. If you're looking for a good place to eat this is the place good friendly service and excellent food my wife and I have had the fried catfish and chicken tenders and steak Fingers. Very reasonably priced and very generous portions. If ever you are in Santa Anna you have to stop at this place they are a little hard to find cross the riailroad tracks on the Brady highway one block to the left you won't regret it. If you are a bean eater try their free beans with any meal. It's just got that down home feel. This cafe has never disappointed. I can order the chicken fried steak, the catfish or a cheeseburger and be happy. The food is all homemade. The CFS is hand battered and one of my favorite to order off their menu. The lunch comes with veggies and a dessert. While you wait on your order you can get a bowl of complimentary beans. I wanted to like this place a lot and had high hopes when we walked in. The decorating is nice - country - and the place was clean and smelled like good food. I think it's a hit with the local crowd, so expect to meet good hearted, friendly west Texas folks. They could use some help speeding up the kitchen. Their Yelp description says "fast food" and that's and adequate description for some of menu selections; but not the speed of service. So, patience is definitely an asset if it's lunchtime at MA's. There was one overworked waitress handling all the table (something over a dozen inside); but the slowdown was from the kitchen. She was able to keep up with everything they were putting out and still handle the register. Food: I had a cheeseburger, which I would rate as average (meat had good flavor) and fries - which were good. My wife had a "tater" and it looked tasty. It appeared to have chicken and melted cheddar cheese. All the food looked appealing. Food was about a 4, but the slow service (over an hour for lunch) cost an additional star. For the area - Santa Anna isn't exactly metropolitan - it's great and I hope it fixes the issue and does well. read more

A waitress was very short with us it was our 1st time there and she didn't explain anything to us about the salad bar which is ridiculous. You get a 4" in diameter saucer and it's 395 if you get 2 plates you pay 395 twice the food was OK that the service was not. read more

Enjoyed some good southern food here. The menu is extensive and the atmosphere is country cafe. The service was ok but seemed to be staffed well. Our food was yummy, served fresh & hot. They do also sell beer & wine. One main area for seating so if you go at a prime time you may have to wait for a table. We will be back anytime we are around Santa Anna!
