I consider myself a THC drink connoisseur of sorts, and I'm always eager to try something new. Walking into Hideaway, I was struck by the bright lighting and glossy wooden floors. The staff was super friendly and helpful-- the security guard by the front led me to the selection of edibles and THC drinks. While there wasn't a huge variety, I was pleased to see Minnesotan brands represented. I ended up grabbing a Sex on the Beach imitation drink. It was $9, which I think is reasonable-- my rule for THC drinks is that I won't spend more than I'd spend on a drink at a brewery. And considering that it had 10 mg (2 servings), I think that was a pretty good deal. read more

I'm amused that they call themselves "The Hideaway" because absolutely nothing is hidden. The second you enter you're surround by pipes, hookahs and other contorted glass thingys in well-lit cases. I came in on the hunt for a hookah and instead of feeling overwhelmed by the vast selection, my roommate and I were asked by 3 different employees if we needed any assistance. I ended up finding exactly what I was looking for: a baby hookah ($15!) and some wild mint shisha. The saleswoman informed us of the buy one, get one half off tobacco sale, so we also left with another flavor that's an apparent customer favorite. In summary: Huge selection. Great service. If I could rate the Hideaway Dinkeytown lower, I would. I am an avid glass collector and I am very knowledgeable about artists, styles, and glass types. I only bring this up because i definitely know what I am looking for and usually dont need to ask a bunch of questions, nor do i make the employees remove every piece from the cases because they are cool. Every time i go into hideaway i am met with employees that have much more entitlement and attitude than knowledge or customer service skills. Yesterday i went in to make a large purchase, tax return season meant i can get a new Brandon Martin piece or a nice Micro rig. I decided on the micro rig(expensive) and i went to the counter and asked the girl behind the counter (short, long brown hair, 2 nose rings) if they had any pelican cases (for the rig) and she says "umm..." and looks at the backpacks on the wall. So i asked "do you kniw what pelican cases are? They are hard cases with foam" She then audibly scoffed and rudely said "yeah, I work here. God, do you know to not be rude?" To which I just said "yeah, no thanks" I then went to Legacy and bought a different rig. Thanks to this rude girl you guys lost a big sale. And thanks to this being the latest of many similar experiences you lost a customer for good. I have bout many pens, accessories, rigs, pipes, and pendants here over the years. I called in yesterday looking for a particular product they promised me was in stock and in store. After driving out I'm told they aren't allowed to sell that product to me at all. I recently stopped in and after discovering the free parking in the back, my only real complaint has been sufficed. The 3 young staff were knowledgeable and friendly and greeted me upon entering. The store was extremely clean and you should expect to spend at least 20 minutes to just see everything. I've also received great service; I was looking to buy a Minnesota Legit item a few months ago and the man (forgot his name--early twenties, lighter hair, etc.) was incredibly helpful and easy to talk to/ask questions. I ended up using his recommendations and I ended up loving my purchase. A brunette woman with glasses (I should really remember names) was helping me the other day and was great as well. The selection of glass is phenominal and, even if you're not buying anything, you can still be entertained by just looking over everything they have. Apparently there is a store policy that says the people who work there can be complete ass holes. My girlfriend asked whether they sell weed there and they became complete ass holes asking us to leave. We didn't know that they had a story policy that was written in fine print somewhere in the store that prohibits us from asking that question. If the sign was visible then we would't have asked. What was funny, as we were walking out someone asked the same thing and guess what? Automatic response by the clerks was to do what? That's right, become ass holes. Went in to look at water pipes with a friend. Saw a 15.99 hookah kit, and thought I'd be nostalgic. Honestly, I should've known better but I've always had such good luck with everything here. Come on guys, couldn't you have at least told me it actually won't even work? There was dust in the hoses, none of the separate pieces connect together...it's not about the money. It's the last hour I spent hoping I could smoke some of my hookah! I didn't need quality, but I needed it to work. I also bought an additional thing of shisha that'll now go to waste. I'm pretty bummed. He told me it was perfect for a beginner. Well. I'm not a beginner and I can't fix it!! Also, I inhaled dust...yum. I was in the market for a new one hitter, so I stopped by here when husband and I were done getting chicken fingers at Raisin' Cane's a few doors over. Walking into the store was amazing. I'd never seen a smoke shop as big as this. The whole front room was their tobacco selections, mostly shisha and cigarettes. Seeing packs of Djarum clove cigarettes made me feel nostalgic for my younger days when you could still smoke in bars and then sick because clove cigarettes are disgusting. I did not inhale. We walked into the back and there was a huge selection of glassware. I couldn't even figure out where the hell to look, even after the lady behind the counter told me where I should be. Most of the pipes were made in China, but they did have a small selection of locally-made glassware (with prices to match). Further down the line and all the way in the back were crack pipes. Fucking disgusting. But whatever... crackheads gonna crack. I chose a small pink glass pipe (NOT crack pipe... I am far too fat to be a crackhead) for $10 and went on my merry way. All in all, super impressed with the selection and the price and I'd visit again. read more

aaaaaaalright i used to absolutely love hideaway like i have actually spent thousands of dollars at this location before i realized that royal tobacco is way cheaper and has much better service. oh and a return policy that isn't super specific; a receipt is absolutely essential when you return the item, which would be fine if (1) they gave you a receipt more than 40% of the time and (2) told you that when you purchased the item. i have actually bought so many things from hideaway that break within a few days of me buying it and i can't return it because i don't have the receipt they never gave me. me and all my stoner friends will no longer be supporting this business. read more

This was in the Mall of America store, which is not on Yelp, so this'll have to do. So there's 3 employees in the store and 2 of us customers when I walk in. Both of us customers are being ignored by the employees who are out front. Eventually an employee from way in the back shouts out "can I help you guys?" Kudos to her for doing the other lazy employees' jobs. The other customer who was there first then talks with her. I have to say "excuse me" to get the one girl working out front's attention. When I ask her if you sell pipes here she replies "we don't have any glass." Mind you, there are glass devices everywhere in the store so who knows wtf she's talking about. I ask her the same question and she repeats it saying "Bloomington won't let us sell any glass in this store." I'm wondering if she is a moron or just didn't hear me correctly both times when finally, the intelligent employee from the back of the store (a very short gal) explains that no, they can't sell pipes. I'm like, OK whatever, at least someone in here maybe has half a brain. I leave and say "thank you" to both of them, but neither has the decency to say "you're welcome" or anything, just ignoring me again. It was pretty rude I thought, especially after putting up with the moron employee. Holy glass, batman. For some reason it's hard to find a headshop that can maintain class and more importantly, organization. The Hideaway has both of these down pat. It's very easy to look around at all of the different pieces. Yes, overwhelming, but categorized and displayed attractively. They also have an impressive selection of hookahs and uniquely crafted hiding mechanisms for...goodies. I could have spent hours upon hours drooling all over the pretty blown glass from local artists. They really do a good job of collaborating and selling work from artists in the Minneapolis area, which I enjoy. I felt like I needed to update my first review to let people know that this store is truly the best. You would assume a big city could top this chain of stores, however I have been severely disappointed with most head shops in the Pacific Northwest. I went back to MN this last January and then again in May, I made sure I had time to stop in to Hideaway and look at their great selection before I left. Hideaway responded to my review on their Facebook page and asked for me to send them an email regarding my negative experience at their store so they could fix it ("because they didn't want to lose a long time customer of over 5 years"). I emailed them, and I did not receive a reply. I commented on their Facebook page again informing them that I sent them the email which they asked me to send; they asked that I send them "my email" as a facebook message instead. Guess what- no response as well!! I tried to write a comment on the same post again and they removed reviews and comments from their Facebook page! What a world class organization that doesn't follow through on their commitments to customers! I would like to thank Hideway; my horrible experience at your store was actually a blessing in disguise because I found "www.hookah-shisha.com"; not only do they carry an enormous amount of quality inventory, but also costs 30-70% less than Hideaway! So I will never go to the hideaway again. This place has terrible customer service, and many of their employees seem to have no idea what they're talking about. Whoever the owner is seems to think that having an attractive female that knows very little about what they're peddling working behind the counter (this last trip there was the only time I've ever seen someone behind the counter that wasn't an attractive woman under the age of 24) is better than having someone who actually knows what they're talking about working for them. Of course someones sex or age really has nothing to do with knowledge of the products being sold, but knowledge isn't what the owner seems to be looking for when hiring someone. It seems pretty misogynistic to only only hire women if they're considered to be pretty, and it's kind of messed up if your goal in hiring people is to make them something to stare at in the store, and that's definitely what this person is doing. read more

I have been going to this place for years. I live down the street and feel comfortable every time I go in there. Today was different. There is a girl who works there who has a very bad haircut and horribly yellow/ rotting teeth. I had been waiting for about 15 minutes for someone to help answer some questions about oil vaporizers vs. dry tobacco vaporizers. I was very prepared to spend a good amount of money there and was planning on buying one. This girl with the bad hair and teeth came over to try and help and was nothing but rude. She automatically assumed I was trying to inquire about there compatible use with an illegal controlled substance. I was only curious about how oil tobacco produces a hit/taste differently then dry. She kept insulting my lack of being informed on these topics and she lost a considerable sale. I was also planning on buying some hookah stuff. Is her $7.25 an hour really worth it to this business when she is loosing potentially a hundred dollars in a matter of less then 20 minutes? I left embarrassed and angry. December 6, 2016 I have, on multiple occasions, made purchases from this establishment wherein I encountered no problem. However, yesterday, Monday, 12/5/2016, I was treated in a condescending, insulting, and sarcastic manner by staff, when I inquired as to why (on this occasion) I was being required to present identification (ID) simply in order to make a cash purchase of one small package of NAG CHAMPA incense. I had worked in retail customer relations as a supervisor / manager, for many years before the staff with whom I was dealing with yesterday WERE EVEN BORN; and subsequently, as a former university instructor / faculty member, I am cognizant of the importance of dealing with customers with DIGNITY and RESPECT, not ARROGANCE and SARCASM. During that incident yesterday, I decided that my right to privacy was far more important than purchasing incense from The Hideaway store in Dinkytown, and I simply left and went to a different establishment to make my purchase. Henceforth, I shall continue to take my business elsewhere. I hope that other customers will not go through what I experienced yesterday at the The Hideaway store in Dinkytown, southeast Minneapolis.
