Tucked away in an unsuspecting corner of Downtown Macon, this fine dining English-style steakhouse established in 1997, offers an experience that unfolds slowly, from a puzzling entrance to a surprisingly polished dining room... and ultimately to some of the best food I've had in Middle Georgia. ARRIVAL + FIRST IMPRESSIONS Because Downtown Macon was buzzing on this particular Saturday night, my husband and I ended up parking a couple of blocks away and taking the alley the GPS insisted was our route. Let's just say the alley definitely had "first date horror movie" vibes--but the beautifully framed photos lining the walls helped cut the sketch factor a bit. Once inside, we were greeted by a friendly, outgoing staff... and immediately greeted by something else: the cigar smoke. Downtown Grill has a full bar with an impressive oak humidor and a selection of bourbons, wines, and scotches that could easily impress the most seasoned connoisseur. But that also means the bar area is smoky--very smoky. I actually questioned whether we'd wandered into the wrong place until the hostess whisked us to the back dining room, where the ambiance shifted entirely. The dining room is intimate, classic, and much more aligned with "fine dining." Cozy booths, dim lighting, soft background music, truly an escape. And once seated, I didn't smell the cigar smoke at all. Bonus points for the restrooms using cloth napkins for hand-drying, an eco-friendly and elegant touch. We had noted on our reservation that it was our anniversary, but there was no acknowledgment. Not a deal breaker, but definitely unexpected for a fine dining restaurant, especially one that's been around this long. Our server was polished, professional, and consistently attentive. No complaints there. I started with the Elderflower Refresher and my husband with an Old Fashioned, both solid. But the star of the cocktail lineup? The Lavender Margarita. An absolute hit and something I'd go back for alone. For an appetizer, we ordered the Lump Crab Cakes. As a Maryland native, my standards are sky-high. These weren't "lump" crab cakes, but for Middle Georgia they were acceptable. They were flavorful, well-seasoned, and paired perfectly with the aioli drizzled on top. Then came the French Onion Soup. I'd seen the rave reviews and they were absolutely justified, easily the best I've had in years. Rich, savory, cheesy perfection. We both opted for the special of the night, the Salmon. My husband's came with mashed potatoes and green beans. I chose broccoli and green beans. The verdict? 5 out of 5. The salmon was cooked with precision--flaky, flavorful, expertly seasoned. The veggies were fresh, vibrant, and seasoned beautifully. Truly, this was the best meal I've had in Middle Georgia, hands down. Downtown Grill may not be where I'd choose to celebrate a milestone (the lack of acknowledgment and smoky entrance made sure of that), but it is where I'll go when I want a reliably excellent, well-executed meal. The kitchen is clearly the star of the show, and they delivered an unforgettable dining experience. We'll absolutely be back, maybe not for the anniversary, but definitely for that food.

The home made soup was fantastic. Service was excellent. The second time the food was not so good. And last night it was a horrible experience ! However, great service and atmosphere but the so called fresh cooked Burger and fries with sautéed mushrooms. By the way, I specifically asked the waitress if it was freshly cooked to order because so many places keep pre-cooked Burgers in a warmer and quickly warm them up. A process easily identified by the dryness and inside temp of the meat. The small Salad was ok. The 2 lukewarm Biscuits were a little dry and undercooked. The sautéed Mushrooms were like shoe leather, dry and overcooked. The Fries were cold as was the dried up poor excuse of a Burger. Too bad there is no pride in the Kitchen! Hard to beat 5 Guy's for a good Burger. Having traveled just about everywhere in the USA. My review should be taken seriously. This place needs a Kitchen Manager that cares about all the food they put out. Not just the semi fancy gourmet that they try to produce there. If they got their Kitchen in order it could be a great destination restaurant !

I went for lunch with a friend for a bday outing. Since it's cold, there's a black covering that makes it looks closed, but don't worry, they're open. The inside is clean and pretty much looks new. We were greeted by a hostess when we got in and promptly seated. We started our meal with the hummus and lentil soup. The hummus is the smoothest I've ever had and was paired with some warmed up pita. I'm usually not a big fan of lentils but the soup was good. The broth had a nice flavor. I got the half order of Shish Tawook for myself and my friend got the falafel wrap. The half is quite filling and still very delicious. The chicken was moist for the most part as in between the pieces they felt kinda overcooked but all in all very good and seasoned well. The vegetables were also seasoned well. I was so impressed walking inside and seeing the murals and artwork. The colors were so vibrant that the murals looked like they were coming to life. I asked the hostess if I could go upstairs to look around, and she said, "Of course." She also told me they have live music nights on the second floor, too. I finally came back down and ordered the Black and Blue Burger, which has the best crumbled blue cheese on top as well as onion rings on top with a side of Brussels sprouts. We also ordered the Turkey Wrap, which was a spinach wrap filled with oven-roasted turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and Cajun aioli. Now who thought of that! It was so good, as was my juicy burger and Brussels sprouts. So, we decided to split our lunch in half, sharing half with each other. Plus, the portions are so huge that it's easy to share. We took our time eating because each bite had so much flavor. I must say that this place is truly one of a kind, offering the best food, service, and atmosphere.
