Let me tell you none of them would set foot in our kitchen to do an initial consultation and design for less than several hundred dollars. HOW ON EARTH CAN ANYONE EFFECTIVELY CONSULT AND DESIGN A SPACE WITHOUT SETTING FOOT IN THAT SPACE??? With Watkins Cabinet Co., the in-home consultation was free. From then on I was hooked. I decided I would find savings someplace else in our project just so I could get my custom cabinets from Watkins. For the consultation, Rudy, one of the owners, came to our home, looked at our kitchen, and took all measurements. We chatted about options and our ideas. The value added during this part of the process was his insight into what works and what doesn't work, and I appreciated that he pointed out any flaws in our own design and offered options and alternatives. Within a couple of days of his visit, he mailed us a full drawing of the design along with the proposal. You have to understand, most places will never give you a scaled drawing without signing a contract!!! If you plan to compare Watkins prices to the brand name cabinet lines that kitchen boutiques and box stores sell, don't. They are all junk compared to custom cabinets by Watkins. Another advantage of custom made is that they made use of every inch of our 121 sq ft space - there are no fillers in our kitchen. Our next step was a visit to their shop. It's nice drive out to Barnesville. We picked out our cabinet style and other options and Rudy toured us around the shop. It is extremely satisfying to know that our cabinets were made locally, that we supported small business, and the local economy. Finally, our cabinets were delivered and installed on time by another one of the owners, Frank (I think). They are sturdy and beautiful and I can't stop looking at them. In 1968, Watkins Cabinet Company built the kitchen in my parents' custom Darnestown home. I won't tell you how old I was, but I remember Rudy Day overseeing that build as clearly as I remember when he walked into my own kitchen in Germantown decades later to start my kitchen redesign. As is all the work Watkins does, the Germantown redesign was seamless. Frank kept the job right on schedule, choosing his own subcontractors, (electric, plumbing and flooring,) who were equally professional and proficient. Roy was just as genius. Those beautiful maple cabinets look like they were born in that space. Kathy was terrific at keeping my account straight when my checks came from sundry banks of different names! A special shout out has to go to Joan. She was amazing, picking up right after Rudy retired. When I wanted a specific item (like my ubatuba gold granite countertops,) she knew exactly where I could get it. When I got catatonic with decision making, Joan picked exactly the right drawer pulls to finish the look I wanted. How many people can say they were sad to write the last check to their kitchen contractor? That's how seamless the Watkins process is. Update: Shortly after getting my dream kitchen, I had to sell the Germantown house. That house went under contract and sold in less than 10 days. I am convinced that the beautiful Watkins kitchen remodel was the key that sold that house so fast. I have recently moved to a new (old) house. And yes, this second generation customer is already taking measurements so that second generation Watkins can remodel my third kitchen (and a bathroom!) After 40 years, I can honestly say I would not have a kitchen built by anyone other than Watkins Cabinet.
