Great selection of loose tea. Pleasant atmosphere. Fantastic pastries. Parking situation can be a little hairy, depending on the time of day. Coffee can disappoint, depending on who makes it. If you want a dry cappuccino you better ask for a macchiatto. They use a powdered chocolate mix in the iced mocha instead of the chocolate syrup they use in their hot mocha, with disappointing results. Getting quality foam out of these baristas is like pulling teeth. If you're looking for tea, pastries, and a place to study near campus this is it. If you want great coffee, go to Perks. read more

I don't know if it's the south, LSU, or just the courtesy of the population, but after frequenting coffee shops in college towns for almost a decade now (in a totally non-creepy way, I promise), I was fully impressed the Highland Coffee. The service was prompt and courteous, the coffee was great, and the other people in the shop created a really nice atmosphere. Perhaps it was my nostalgia for college, studying, or exchanging ideas over caffeinated goodness, but I left feeling great and got a ton of work done at the same time. Either way you win, HC. I really love the atmosphere, proximity to campus, the fact that they don't make you feel weird for buying one or two drinks and then using their wifi for a few hours (bless you), and their flavored iced coffees! I think two areas for improvement are the taste of the espresso drinks and drip coffee. There have been a few instances where I pop in for an Americano, and have noticed that the espresso tastes over extracted and bitter-- perhaps making more adjustments and tasting the espresso more frequently throughout the shift would help to smooth that out. As for the coffee-- similar issue, sometimes tastes over extracted or burnt. Some simple adjustments made by the staff when they are brewing would completely solve this. read more

This place is my jam. Walls covered in beautiful local artwork, great atmosphere, free/fast wifi and amazing outdoor space with lots of greenery. They also roast the beans on-site, which means that if you're on the north side of campus, you can smell the sweet scent of roasting coffee beans. It's like a mating call for coffee addicts. Their coffee has the added benefit of being delicious and they have a mind-blowing assortment of flavored coffees for a place that produces their own coffee. However, they also have hand-picked loose tea, cold brew coffee and tea, frozen blended drinks, etc. Their pastries and cakes are awesome and fresh, made by a local baker. The owner/staff are incredibly nice people and you can always have a great conversation with a stranger at Highland. read more

I should firstly say I'm an employee of Highland coffees and it makes me sad to see the shop got a bad review because ' our customers are pretentious. ' I've never worked at a place this amazing in my life. All of the employees and especially the owner genuinely care about your coffee. It's roasted in the shop, none of the chain stores do that. Every single barista is willing to make your drink however you want and doesn't consider that a bother, we welcome it. We love our customers and know most of them by name. And yes, some of them are hairy grad students. Our coffee is fresher, better and cheaper than any chain around PLUS you're supporting local business. I was here almost every day from about 1997 to 2001 and I would have never graduated had it not been for Highland Coffees. I swear it was the only place that I could study at without being annoyed by some crappy music being played or repeated banging sounds and blenders churning like you hear at Starbucks. There was always nice classical music being played really low and it got me into a zone where I could concentrate on my work for hours. The coffee is great. The owner knows his stuff. They roast their own beans. I return to Baton Rouge a couple of times a year now to visit family and I always stop by for a cup of coffee at Highland Coffees when I'm in town. The place hasn't really changed a bit since I left except that I no longer see people that I know there but that's the case everywhere in Baton Rouge because it's a college town and people come and go every few years. I recently discovered that there is FINALLY a way to order Highland Coffees coffee on-line!! I'll be doing so from now on as soon as I run out of the beans that I purchased from my last trip home! Oh how I miss this place! First of all, there are a ton of seating options (indoor, outdoor, couches, big chairs, little chairs) so you can get the most out of your study/research/reading session. I know I'm not the only one who's left a coffee shop in mild pain from sitting in the same wood chair for hours. There's also lots of natural light inside and the patio area is just lovely... usually quiet, birds hopping around, etc. The coffee and tea here is top notch and there are tons of types and flavor options. I'm pretty sure they roast their own coffee beans but don't quote me. The only thing that's less than ideal about this place is the parking situation. But, there are parking lots in the area and a little fresh air never hurt anyone. read more

I have yet to try something here I didn't like! The staff is really sweet and totally understand that we aren't all experts on the many different types of coffee drinks. My favorite thing from here has got to be chocolate covered espresso beans! I will say however that the same customers seem to be in there all the time and if you aren't okay with ladies and gents undressing you with their eyes you may want to make it a quick trip. I tried their light and darker espressos in a latte. Both completely lacked body, which was surprising and disappointing. Slightly better than Starbucks, but I did also notice coffee ground at the bottom of my drink... Between this and the rushed service, I wouldn't recommend the espresso drinks here unless you're flat out of other options. Great place to study. Get your laptops on, indulge yourself in their own coffee which is ground to optimize on the flavor. Their dark roast is great. They don't have a proper meal to eat. The two people at the register asked everyone in front of me and behind me if they had been helped or wanted anything but skipped over me as if I was invisible. Waiting to order, I heard the barista ask very detailed questions about the person's coffee order in front of me. I like that they pay attention to detail here. So why the one star? I ordered what I thought was a cream cheese croissant (that's how the plate it was on in the display case was labelled), only to take a bite and realize that it was cream cheese and ham. Highland offers a sizable drink menu. Though typically I get the iced coffee (quick to make, packs a good caffo-wallop), I've had their capps and mochas before. I prefer the richness of their iced coffees to CC's, but the espresso drinks tend to fall short, especially on speedy service. Unlike any typical coffee shop, there is no assembly line method of drink creation and payment. One person makes one whole order and then rings that order up when he or she is done several minutes later. Working (perhaps too long) in the service industry, I cringe at this. The atmosphere is one of the best in Baton Rouge. Dark teal walls contrast with the wide and open windows overlooking Chimes street and the coffeehouse's courtyard (though at night it tend to feel smaller), and are adorned with local artwork. The baristas are nice enough, though there is no attempt to really relate to the customer at all. Not that I can blame them, but to some it matters. The patrons are usually present during schooltime (pretty dead in the summer) and the lobby can range from sleepytime quiet to everyone-needs-to-stfu-thisisacoffeeshop. The wifi is about the worst in the area, though it's free. Beggars can't be choosy. read more

I've only been to Highland twice, but I find that it's a nice place to study or chat with a friend. I like that they have glassware for drinks that aren't to go, but I don't understand why a large sized drink would be 12 oz for "for here" and much larger "to go" when they are the same price. Either way, I've had tea and a cafe au lait and both are good. The biscotti is excellent and not dry or hard- yum! I will probably be back if I need a place to study or work near campus. However, the parking is a hassle (street parking w/ a meter on weekdays) and it's usually pretty crowded! I also wish the baristas were more friendly; that would be nice! read more
