I've been a patient at this office for some time, but unfortunately I feel that long wait times have become a recurring issue. At my most recent appointment, scheduled for 10:00 AM, I arrived early at 9:55. More than an hour after my appointment time, I had only received X-rays and polishing and was still waiting for the remainder of my cleaning and exam. Delays can happen in any healthcare setting, but what was frustrating was the lack of communication about how far behind the office was running and how much longer I should expect to wait. This experience was especially difficult because, like many patients, I arrange work and childcare around my appointments. I understand that emergencies and unexpected situations arise, but consistently keeping patients waiting well beyond their scheduled appointment times shows a lack of respect for their time. I was also disappointed by a recent interaction regarding my child. After my child chipped a tooth, I contacted the office because I wanted it evaluated. I felt that my concerns were dismissed and that there was pushback about bringing my child in to be seen. As a parent, when a child has a dental injury, I expect my concerns to be taken seriously and for the office to help determine whether an evaluation is appropriate. I had one of the worst experiences at Highland Dental, and I feel compelled to share my story to warn others. My son needed a filling, so we scheduled an appointment for a Saturday. When we arrived, it was clear the dentist on duty was overwhelmed and stressed out due to overbooking, that should have been my first red flag. Despite my concerns, we proceeded with the filling because my son needed it. Unfortunately, less than a week later, the filling came out. I immediately called Highland Dental to report the issue, and to my dismay, they told me there was nothing they could do. They refused to redo the filling or even issue a refund, suggesting that I should find a specialist for a baby tooth instead. I requested a refund, but to this day, I have not received anything. I reached out several times, but I never got a call back. This has been the worst experience I've ever had with a dental office. Even though Highland Dental is the closest to my home, I will never return. On a positive note, I found another dental office just a few blocks away that was able to correct the filling without the need for a specialist, and it was more affordable too. My experience here has been very negative. They attempted to charge inflated fees for a filling, and when I questioned the charges, the explanations didn't add up and felt dishonest. I had an appointment for my 6 month checkup/ cleaning. At my last appointment, they recommended that I get a deep cleaning which would cost $900 out of pocket. I said no and at the latest appointment, they asked me again if I wanted to schedule it. I told them no. While I was waiting in the lobby, the office manager came over with a printout of the costs for the deep cleaning and said he could reduce the price to $750. I said no again. I then had X-rays of my teeth and the dentist came in to do an exam. He examined my teeth for less than 5 minutes, said there was no decay and then left. The hygienist then told me that the exam was over. I said I had an appointment for a cleaning. She said that my insurance wouldn't cover a cleaning since I needed a deep cleaning and the bacteria from a regular cleaning could cause issues. I asked her if they called my insurance and she didn't respond. At the front desk they told me I could make an appointment in 6 months for an "exam" but not a cleaning. I refused to make an appointment. As I left, a woman in the waiting room said something similar happened to her husband. I called my insurance and asked if it was true that I wasn't covered for a regular cleaning because I didn't do the deep cleaning. They said I am covered for regular cleanings and there's no reason why the office should have refused to do it. So I will no longer be going to this dentist- I felt like I was being swindled and pressured to pay $700 for a deep cleaning they said I needed. read more

I went to Highland Dentistry to pull my tooth. I knew it would need to be removed surgically. While I sat in the chair my dentist informed me that he wanted to do a bone graft. This is my choice to have this done. He actually told me my care would be $8000 I was shocked that a dentist would put my care to a monetary value. I relented I only want the tooth removed. He refused to pull unless I get the bone graft. I have had other teeth removed surgically my choice for the bone graft. They say you loose bone mass still my choice. It was going to be $1200 for that alone. My insurance didn't cover it. I waited one month to get an appointment with him. Now, I have to find another dentist. This is worse than a car lot with a car salesman trying to contrive your hard earned dollar. Dentist like this one should care this one doesn't. read more

Highland is my general dentist. I selected the group because they accept Delta Dental insurance, they were close to where I live and they appeared to have fewer negative reviews than other practices. However I went with some trepidation. Most people seem to not like their dentist because the staff is rude and the dentist recommends procedures that are expensive and, while may be necessary, exhibit no symptoms. Not being dentists ourselves, how are we to know if the recommended procedures are necessary or simply a mechanism to make money. I experienced none of this at the Highland Dental Group. The staff is friendly and competent Michael Joesting is thorough and professional. On first review , he did recommend several dental area of that justified watching, but did not recommend any immediate procedures unlike other dentists that I had recently visited. This has been my experience now after three routine cleanings and inspections. Michael has earned my trust. Recently Michael did recommend that a tooth be capped prior to my leaving on a long trip. He was very thorough about explaining the need and showing me the visual evidence. There was little time prior to my departure and my prior experience was that caps typically take approximately three weeks. I asked if the crown could be completed before my departure. Michael assured me that it could and we scheduled an appt for one week later. It turns out that Highland has the technology to create a finished crown in their office. So rather than inserting a temporary crown and waiting two weeks while the crown is sent out to be produced, the finished crown is produced in the office and cemented in the same day. As a result, the whole procedure took 2.5 hours. I walked out with a permanent crown and with no restrictions on eating or activities. Good to go. I was very impressed and my faith in Highland Dental has grown as a result. read more

I needed urgent help because a tooth started hurting one night and by the next day, it was unbearable. Dr Tim flexed his schedule to squeeze me in the same day. He didn't have enough time to conduct the full procedure, but he heard my concerns and got me started on antibiotics. He was able to make a real appointment the next business day (Monday) and really took care of me when I arrived. They explained all the financial side of the process as well as my options. Once I was actually in the chair, I was even more impressed. The staff was friendly and explained everything well, and they did a great job preparing my tooth. I ended up needing a root canal, but the endodontist said the prep was done so well that we could continue to use the temporary crown. Dr Tim explains things well. He is very friendly, but best of all, he is a very skilled dentist who is good at his work. I recommend him. read more

WARNING: I made an appointment with this new dentist for a dental cleaning. They received 4 starts so I thought, ok they must be ok. The office told me the first appointment would be 2 hours while the doctor decided "what type of cleaning" I needed. Kind of odd, but ok. Of course they recommended a Deep Cleaning which I've never heard of in my 45 years of going to the dentist. The billing to the insurance would be $3,900 and my portion would be $800...for this deep cleaning. After my research on what exactly is a deep cleaning, I learned there are many risks with the gums not reattaching to the tooth, especially if you have implants as well as several other risk with damage to the gums. So, I decided to get a "regular cleaning" instead but guess what..........they refused to give me a regular cleaning!!! I guess the billing of $70 is just not enough. This place is a SCAM and I would stay FAR FAR AWAY. read more

I have been going to this office for several years, while the staff has always been professional, it has taken on a whole new atmosphere with Dr. Tim purchasing the practice. My prior dentist, was our family dentist for three generations. I have missed that familial connection with a dentist, but no more. At first meeting, Dr Tim was very professional, and warm and engaging. He strives to create that down home, family Dentist office. I needed to have some work done before having some orthodontic work, and Dr. Tim conferred with the orthodontist, then called me and spoke to me on the phone about the treatment plan. He was interested in finding the root of the problem, and preventing any reoccurrence during my orthodontic treatment. I'll be piggybacking on Shaina R's review of Highland Dental Group down below because her experience was very similar to mine. This was my first appointment here after switching insurance carriers with my new job. Parking isn't bad and the inside seems very clean/organized. They were not crowded and I was immediately prompted to sign about 4-5 forms electronically. The receptionist briefly went over them, but I believe it would be more professional and courtesy if they offered to go over them in detail - or offer to provide me the forms I signed. I was called back very fast, so kudos for that. Dr. Polumbo immediately brought me into an office briefly to ask a few questions. I thought this was a nice gesture. He was kinda flexing his dental school rankings saying, "my uncle always tells me Chapel Hill is a top 5 dental school" but hey it's cool. They took lots of x-ray pictures, which is expected. Michelle cleaned my teeth and was very friendly. Overall, the staff were all friendly and approachable. No issues with the team at all. :) Everything up to this point is 4-5 stars. After cleaning my teeth, Dr. Polumbo comes in and informs me I need crowns and it's very likely I'll need a root canal. This was shocking to me, as the tooth they were suggesting needed fixing was treated by my previous dentist 1.5 years ago. He showed me my x-rays, and explained the process of why he believes a crown and root canal are needed (I have no background in dental sciences). He talked about the various crown options (pointing to a poster conveniently there in the room) and suggested the option that was obviously the most expensive "because it's the best bang for your buck." I walked out to process the information, as it was $1489. That's a lot of money so fast! And they were slightly pushy about taking care of the issue at that very moment. Immediately after, I contacted my old dentist for a 2nd opinion. After talking to my old dentist, he said I'm not close to needing a root canal and it seems a little ridiculous as I was in no pain or discomfort. He also suggested I didn't even need a crown, as the decay Dr. Polumbo saw didn't encompass 50% of my tooth. He suggested all I need is a filling and it looks like my old filling cracked, allowing bacteria inside. He took care of it then and there, removing the filling and cleaning out my tooth, and filled it back up. Free of charge. I can't speak for the quality of work Dr. Polumbo does and as far as I know, could be amazing. However, he seemed to be on the manipulative side as evidenced by him flexing his school, convenient-placed posters, pressuring his patients to make ill-informed, expensive choices quick and on the spot. These all seem like devices used to garner trust and a feelings of assurance. I walked out feeling this dentist's primary goal is to make money by pressuring unnecessary and expensive procedures. If you see this dentist, look into getting a second opinion before doing a procedure recommended by Dr. Polumbo. It saved me minimum $1489 (and even more for a seemingly unnecessary root canal). This seems to be the pattern of other Yelp reviewers. read more

Refused to give me the cleaning that was provided under my insurance. Wanted $175 (that is with the $100 discount) to provide a cleaning! They would not even be utilizing my insurance. Did I mention that I am on a DMO plan? (Meaning this office was selected by my insurance and the only one covered by my plan). When I asked for the cleaning that was provided under my insurance (I did not want to pay out of pocket), the Dr refused. He then stood in the doorway, blocking the exit when I was clearly trying to leave, and argued with me. Worst/most unprofessional service I have EVER experienced at a dental provider. Prepare to be gouged if you do go here. Update: The next dentist I went to was shocked to hear they wanted to do a 'specialized' cleaning and confirmed that all I needed was a routine visit. A lot of bait and switch going on here. The office staff was very nice, but when I called to make an appointment with the doctor listed I found out he didn't see patients here. I then saw another doctor who told me I needed a root canal and that they could perform it. After about an hour in the chair, I was told that they did not have the correct tools to get all the root out and that I would need to see a specialist. I still paid them for the root canal and then had to pay the specialist, very expensive. The second visit, I wanted to see the doctor I had had before and was told she was gone. They then wanted to redo my fillings, I said no and I was constantly pressured to have it done. I haven't been back. read more

I gave one star, because I had to give them something. My family has been with Dr.Tran for years. Over the last year or so, the front desk has screwed up appointments 3 times because they had a different time on their books than I had in my calendar; I usually throw the appointment card out after I put it in my phone. Yesterday was the last straw, and we are now leaving. To start with, Katie was supposed to let me know ahead of time how much my out of pocket would be for my son's appointment which was yesterday--I assumed it would be a few hundred dollars and was prepared for that, but she called 2 days before Christmas (instead of emailing a month ago like she had promised), and told me my out of pocket would be $1083. Not only that, Katie had also committed to scheduling cleaning's for all of us, and never got back to me about that. So, yesterday, my son had a procedure scheduled to have his wisdom teeth pulled. Katie called me at 10:45, pretty much scolding me because on their books the appointment was at 10:15. I had it in my calendar as 12:00. Katie argued with me over the phone and then put someone else on the phone who was at least reasonable. At this point I said, how do we resolve this and get my son in for his procedure. She said they would "accommodate" us. So we went in, my son had his procedure, but after he said the people in the back were not as nice to him as they have been in the past--maybe because they thought WE were the flaky ones that screwed up their surgery schedule? Fast forward a few hours and what did I pull out of my wallet? Yep, the confirmation card from Highland Dental's office for December 26th, 2013, at 12pm!!!! Sure glad they made us feel like shit and "accommodated" us when it was THEIR mistake! Not to mention the "side-eye" I got from Katie while I was there. P.S. we already have a new dentist lined up for after the first of the year. And I will never throw away an appointment card again, even if it IS in my phone. read more

(Keep in mind, this is my first trip to the dentist since 2009, and I drove 40 minutes to get there) From the minute you walk in the door, everyone at Highland Dental Group is friendly and committed to making your visit to the dentist office as smooth as possible. I was greeted by their friendly receptionist and only had to wait for 5 minutes before I was taken by their dental assistant for x-rays. He was a really nice person, and he was constantly making me feel as comfortable as possible. The x-rays took about 10 minutes (they are digital, so you see the results immediately), and then I was taken back to the exam room. I was sat down and then greeted by my dentist, Dr. Kahn (I think that is how it is spelled) and the dental hygienist. They talked with me for about 10 minutes getting to know me and introducing themselves. They were both funny and genuinely interested in making my exam comfortable. Dr. Kahn, btw, is very young, but in my view, that is a good thing. She went to the best dental school in the country and is versed in all of the new techniques and technology of dentistry. Dr. Kahn ended up finding 4 small cavities, and she told me the options for getting them filled. She then stepped out, and their person who deals with the financials of the company stepped in and told me what my insurance covered, and the benefits of getting one filling over the other. I ended up getting the expensive ones. At no time was I pressured into getting the cheap ones (14 dollars each) or the expensive ones(175 dollars each). Personally, I am willing to pay to keep my teeth in good shape for as long as possible. After I chose which fillings I wanted, Dr. Kahn and the DH came back in and got started on my teeth. The procedure was painless. However, they were very thorough when it came to the cleaning. I didn't mind it at all. My teeth were then polished off by the dental assistant, and I was escorted to the front desk to settle up. I paid my bill with a sparkling smile on my face and am actually looking forward to going to the dentist. I strongly recommend Highland Dental Group. They are professional, friendly, caring, and use the latest technology in dentistry. I will definitely be going to them as my regular dental office. read more

I had a really great experience at Highland Dental. I went in for a typical cleaning / exam / xray - I had a Groupon. The reception staff were very nice and friendly. The dentist / hygienist did what needed to be done and found some issues. They talked to me about it like a human being, taking the time to answer all my questions and explain the different options. When they found out that I did not have insurance, they talked to me about financing options - never once making me feel bad. I did go back to have the other procedure done and that experience was just as positive - as positive as a visit to the dentist can be.
