Our server was decent overall, though we could have used a drink refill toward the end of our meal. Unfortunately, the food quality was very disappointing compared to our previous visits. The Three Cheese Cajun Shrimp Dip looked like overcooked cheese with little to no shrimp, and the chips tasted stale. The Railshake Burger was okay, but the sweet potato fries came covered in cinnamon without us being asked if we wanted it. The chicken wrap had very little chicken, although the tater tots were good. We also weren't offered any condiments. It's disappointing because we used to really enjoy this place. After two disappointing visits in a row, we're not sure we'll be back. I was traveling through and needed an early lunch as I skipped breakfast in my travels. Yelp had me heading here at the mere mention of Gumbo! I ordered the 1/4 Muffaletta Sandwich and upgraded to the exclusive side of Gumbo for a $2.00 upcharge. The Gumbo was indeed very tasty but was a small cup. I longed for more. The Muffaletta arrived and it to tasted good but was again on the small portion size. For $17.50 for the Soup/Sandwich Combo plus $3.00 for a Sprite Zero and $1.81 in tax and to top it off a .78 service fee the tab came to a whopping $23.09 not including tip. Ouch. And I left hungry. I loved the flavors but probably would not return sadly despite the very good service. :( read more

As stated before the atmosphere is super cozy and the service was SO pleasant. My mom and I ordered burgers.. slightly over priced I thought (about $15 a meal) but hey for a good burger? I'll try it! What we received was not remotely worth $15. Not remotely worth $5. After the first bite I thought to myself hmm a little salty.. a little rubbery.. obviously not a good quality beef.. then my mom said it.. FROZEN burger! Listen if I'm paying $5 dollars at a boys baseball game.. I'm down, all about it. But $15 for a frisco melt with a frozen patty? And another $15 for the same patty on my mom's mushroom Swiss?? Well, you'll know why they call it the Railshake soon after you sit down - the nearby train rattles the building when it goes through town. Kind of cute and quaint. The place itself is ok - they could do a better job of hiding the spilt-beer smell that seems to permeate the floors. Server was nice. Cooks were not on point. They're all kids so, not sure if they have their timing right. Everyone got their dishes before me, and when I got my soggy catfish it was clear the kitchen forgot and just pushed it out asap. I wished they cooked it proper as the one crispy bite I had was excellent. Everyone else liked their food. Their grilled cheese is insane - excellent, very bready but also super cheesy. Ordered Gumbo, pretzels, shrimp po boy, and chicken pizza for lunch. Gumbo was outstanding with some good heat, large chunks of meat, and fresh veggies. I would have liked a German mustard instead of the cheese sauce for the pretzels but they were fine. Po Boy needed more zip and a different roll- too much white bread with no character. Pizza was fine. Will return for the awesome gumbo and interested in jambalaya, but that is a dinner only item. read more

What a great variety of choices. I love the menu here. Ive been missing Gacamole bites and I found them here !! The Mahi Mahi was cooked perfectly. As usual I have a picky order but everything was PERFECT !! The waitstaff are all VERY helpful, not just with the patrons but they all seem to get along together helping eachother out !! I love it. Awesome Cajun style restaurant with a unique history that dates back to the 1800's. The owner (Teffy) is nothing short of amazing who's in the kitchen cooking her TOO DIE FOR food. Between soup flights, rotating weekend specials and live music this place is hands down awesome! AND they were recently just featured in "America's Best Restaurants". Stopped at Railshake for an early dinner. Our server was very nice and waited on us quickly. My husband ordered the cod special with chips and I ordered the pick two of gumbo and a half of a hot ham and cheese sandwich. The food came out quickly and was hot. Everything tasted great. My only complaint was that the gumbo was a soup consistency instead of a stew consistency. The taste was great but instead of a thick gumbo it was a thin soup. The salmon special was delicious and arrived piping hot. The outdoor patio is always a great place to sit--especially when you bring the little kids. First things first - Railshake is not really a brewery. Well, they don't make it at the actual place - their beer is actually brewed somewhere in Belleville...whatever. Still, its a decent place, located right by the railroad tracks as you're heading into the downtown part of Highland. When you walk in, you'll probably notice it has an "old smell" from the building, which was different. It has a great atmosphere, and the servers are friendly. Not dirty at all, and not too fancy. Railshake has plenty of craft beer options to choose from on tap, as well as their own Porter brew (that's something to ask your server about). Their menu is impressive, and there are plenty of options, including plenty of cajun-flavored foods. I've had their turkey-bacon avocado wrap and their blue-cheese burger along with their fries, and both were great-tastin'. There's so many I would love to try in the future. Classic rock is blasting, as the jukebox is set that way, I believe. They have a cool tribute (painted on the wall by the bar) to Schott Brewery, one of Highland's long-defunct breweries. One oddity I noticed while sitting at the bar: they have a refrigerated part all over the bar where you can put your drink in the iced area! (Not to sound like a caveman, but that's the first place I've ever seen such thing!) Besides the parking in front of the building, there is a decent-sized lot just off of 5th Street. Give this place a shot, as this is probably the closest Highland has as far as microbreweries. read more

We love trying new places to eat. We hadn't tried Railshake yet and were excited to give it a shot. Service was good. The gnocchi soup was amazing. However, the portion sizes compared to the prices are not great at all. Our small 'cup' of soup was $6. We also ordered a ham and cheese sandwich for $12.50. It literally had 2 small pieces of ham. That's it, two small slices, and I am not exaggerating. I was expecting at least double that amount for $12.50. A big hot ham and cheese from Hardees comes with 3x as much ham as this sandwich for reference and is probably $7 cheaper, and honestly, tastes better. It legitimately looked like a kids' meal sandwich. In my opinion, the food is okay, but it is WAY overpriced for the portion sizes you get. We love trying new restaurants and have a good list going. Railshake is one of the worst when it comes to price compared to portion. We will not be back. read more

My husband I were a little reluctant to eat here because it seemed many of the reviews on here were from years ago. We really wanted to try a new restaurant so we went anyway. All I can say is I'm so glad that we did! What a wonderful experience! He got the special that night and it was absolutely phenomenal. I got the pick 2 with the BLT and homemade gumbo. The gumbo had the most amazing flavor ever! The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice and rustic. After we ate, we sat outside on their patio (wish I would've gotten pictures of the patio), it's a wonderful spacious patio, probably the best in Highland. Decided to try this restaurant for lunch. It's been over a year since we were last here. My husband had their chili, which was watery, not enough meat and beans. However flavor was ok. I had their gumbo, which was brothy, but had plenty of meat. The flavor was too spicy for me. We split the Italian sub with homemade chips. The sub had fresh spinach on it, which we took off (don't eat raw spinach). The meat was a little tough (dried out?). Bread was over toasted. Overall the sandwich did not have much flavor. If you're going to charge $12 for a salad where the large salad is the size of a side salad it is pretty chickenshit to A. Serve dressing in 1 oz plastic waffle cups. Either be a restaurant or add a drive through window and embrace your culinary mediocrity. Then your disappointed customers will know what to expect instead of being tricked into thinking people in the kitchen know how to cook. B. Charge for extra dressing when you serve it in 2 TBS size servings for a "large" salad. C. Have flavorless watery Ranch dressing you call homemade. What you served me was Homemade Ranch? Not in MY home. Serve it from a bottle of Hidden Valley if you cannot follow the directions on the dressing packet. D. Serve salad on a plate so you cannot mix it with the dressing without making a mess. E. NO tomatoes kick the crap out of the underripe pink crap tomato that was on my plate. The spinach leaves still had the stems attached. Really? REALLY?? The toppings were skimpy as well. For what I paid for this salad it should have been a world class salad. It wasn't even a McDonald's class salad. The bleu cheese I asked for instead of the feta I dislike consisted of THREE tiny bits. The chicken ($2 upcharge) was absolutely flavorless. Here's a clue fellas: seasoning is the key to cooking. 1 TBS each of pecans, craisins and bacon. Someone is stealing from you kitchen if this is what you put on a $12 salad. Chicken is a bland meat and for a place that offers Cajun style food, they have no conception of how to make the cuisine they purport to serve. Bland, unseasoned food is not what we eat in the big easy and you should be EMBARRASSED to try and call this Louisiana food. It's NOT. The "seasoned" tots are a joke, Sonic down the road has seasoned tots. This joke of a restaurant has zero conception of seasoning in any form. It wasn't a TERRIBLE meal, just flavorless and dull as dishwater. Full disclosure: I just returned from New Orleans two weeks ago. My girlfriend and I decided to drive to Highland to try Railshake Brewery on a recent Friday afternoon. First of all, this isn't a brewery. While they do have 18 taps, they do not brew their own. We started off with the Boudin Balls. They were terrible. Way, way over cooked. The crust was hard to chew through. To top it off, they gave us some cheap-ass plastic plates. I opted for the Catfish and Hushpuppies for my entree while my girlfriend had the Honey Mustard Glazed Chicken. The Hushpuppies tasted of nothing more than fried cornmeal. The red beans and rice were bland. The best part was the catfish. The flavor was good but it was soggy where the filets overlapped which was most of the fish. I wish they would have drained the grease of them a little better before putting them on the plate. My girlfriend had no complaints about her Honey Mustard Glazed Chicken. The best part of this place is the staff. They were very friendly and attentive. Would I be back? No. Girlfriend says yes. read more

My boyfriend and I got on Yelp because we are unfamiliar with this area. We were driving home from the St. Louis airport and instead of eating expensive airport food, we wanted something reasonable. We arrived in the weird hour when lunch is over but dinner hasn't quite yet started, so some of their menu items weren't available yet. This restaurant is called a "brewery" but they do not brew their own beer. It's more like a pub. The food was okay. Kinda greasy, but I can't really say anything because I ordered all fried things. We got these appetizers that were like chicken fingers. I forgot the exact name of them but they were seasoned, fried and came with a side of cajun hot mayo sauce. I also got a fish sandwich. Excellent food! Myself, my sister, and our friend F found this place with some help from Yelp, and are so happy! We had the glazed chicken with veggies and red beans and rice, the muffaleta, and smoked pork sandwich. All very tasty! Portions are big and prices are very reasonable. They had the sometimes hard to find hard cider for me, and many more beers are available. Beautiful environment too. The one problem here is that there is no person seating guests. We had to stand around hovering over other guests waiting for some to leave. These guys are very successful and will only get more popular, but they have got to do something about seating people in an organized and fair manner. And they should renovate the second level and make that more seating or private party space. They're good enough they should expand soon! read more

Fantastic lunch! The PoorBoys looked good, but I was more interested in the blackened fish. The waitress offered to make one with fish and I'm glad I got it! Nice big portion and I could not resist the sweet potato fries which were amazing. My lunch buddy said the triple decker toasted cheese was wonderful & huge.
