Article lacquered on dining table. Very creative & historical!

Sorry - I didn't take pictures but you'll have to believe me that this place was great. Our waitress was very good with taking our orders & special requests. The food arrived hot and was very good. One of my friends got something she always gets that looked like a skillet with lots of veggies. I got scrambled eggs with bacon, American potatoes (that were sliced and not cubed), biscuit & gravy. The biscuit was so flaky - truly homemade. The waitress was great at giving us coffee refills and just being attentive to our large group. The tables had news articles that were lacquered onto the tables regarding the history of Highland. So very interesting! Love it! As you know, I'm a Coca-Cola girl - no Coke just Pepsi so one less star.

This is a somewhat hidden place in Highland. Unless you're a local you've probably never heard about it and how to get there. It's nearly disguised as a house since it's on a residential street which borders the business district. But either way, it's a great hidden gem. It's a great senior citizen's place, as they are open during certain hours. And in 2024, they will only accept cash - not that it's a bad thing. They do have a great menu, and some may say the food is not top quality. But the prices are very reasonable, whether you're coming here for breakfast and lunch. Service is great as well. Lots of Highland history on display too.

Best diner breakfast in the area. Amazing prices, huge portions. I will definitely be back. The smothered hash browns are an absolute must. I would love to just get a big plate of those. Friendly service. I can't wait to try even more menu items!

This cafe is the epitome of what a greasy spoon should be, in all the best ways. My boyfriend's family is from the area and swears by 9th st. We were even chastised for visiting without them. For such a hole in the wall, the Social distancing was good. Our Waitstaff was kind and accommodating. The food was phenomenal. The portion sizes were huge! I had the western omelette with smothered hash browns. And I ate nearly all of it, which is even more impressive when you see the size. 10/10 would frequent.

Despite that, the other tables seemed to receive constant attention while our waitress disappeared for long stretches of time. We were initially seated in the side room with a large industrial fan blowing so hard that it was moving the menus off the table. We waited for the waitress to return so we could request a different table, but she never came back, so we moved ourselves to another empty table away from the fan. She seemed unhappy about the move and told us we might have to relocate again because they were expecting a busy day. Honestly, the restaurant was empty, and we would have been finished long before any rush started -- which we were. I asked for ketchup with my burger, and it didn't arrive until after I had already finished eating. Overall, the service was very poor. Unfortunately, the food was also extremely salty -- and we're people who normally enjoy salt. I had the Farmhouse Burger with Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese, while my wife ordered the steak and fries cooked medium well. The steak came out medium rare, and both her fries and my burger and Brussels sprouts were overly salted. The one bright spot was the mac and cheese, which we took to go. My daughter tried some and said it was the best she'd ever had. To top it off, our bill came to an even $100 with tip, and all we had were waters and the items mentioned above. We had been wanting to try Retreat for quite a while, so this experience was very disappointing. Between the poor service and underwhelming food, we probably won't be coming back.

I had a 2 meat platter, pulled pork & shrimp with mac & cheese & baked beans, wife had wings. The staff was welcoming and patient while explaining the menu to us. Service was just as good as the food, it seemed everyone was in a good mood and that goes straight back to management. The burnt ends were the star of the show, so juicy! My brisket was a tad dry. They also put the sauce in the fridge so it's cold, but there might not be a way to avoid that food-safety wise. Their wings are also really good. The mac-n-cheese side is good. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring your food out to you. The only other thing I don't love is there's two rooms, the main room and a room off to the side, and especially if you are in the side room, it feels like you are crammed in there with a ton of other people and sometimes it gets really loud. When it's nice enough, we prefer to sit outside as they have a few picnic benches off to the side that are covered.

It was an incredibly hot evening, but I enjoyed a frozen peach sangria, which helped keep me cool. (The fans up there didn't work, so the frozen drink was almost a necessity.) My spouse and I split a flatbread pizza and a berry salad, too. The salad was fine--it needed a lot more nuts and a touch of salt. The flatbread, though, was REALLY delicious! The frozen sangria was great, too--sweet but not coyingly so. A friend I was with ordered one with a splash of red wine on top, making it a touch less sweet and more balanced, according to her. I'll try that next time. The winery closed earlier than I expected, but the musician was great. Copperdock was still a great place to spend an evening with friends or family. I recommend a visit!

Throughout our visit, someone from our table had to get up 4-5 times to get food or drinks and even take our checks and credit cards to the register ourselves in order to pay. I also ordered the charcuterie board for our table of four women to share because I was really craving some fruit. At over $22, I expected much more. The presentation looked as though it had been thrown together by a toddler, and the portion size was disappointing. The seven (plus one shriveled) whole grapes included certainly did not satisfy my fruit craving. For the price point, I expected better service, a more thoughtfully prepared charcuterie board, and a more enjoyable overall dining experience.
