Really nice place that I went to with family and friends we bought 2 separate bowling courts one for kids and one for adults. We put bumpers on the kids one and it was really helpful. Good price for shoes, food, and the courts and they had bowling shoes in sizes as small as toddlers 6 so little enough to fit our littlest kids (four and just turned five) feet. They also had a few arcade games and a restaurant that looked good so five stars! read more

I went to Highland Lanes just now and was highly Disatisfied! I am 104 lbs, 5 feet tall. I am definitely a petite woman, the size of most children. I was using a 6lb ball and then a worker came over and took it and said only children can use it. I told him, I couldnt comfortably lift the 8lb ball. He said that it didn't matter because he wanted to avoid the ball being broken. I understand if an adult is crazy strong and just wants to hall the ball down the lane, BUT I can't even physically do that based on my stature and size. They chose not to take care of my needs. I highly reccomend not going here if you are smaller in size and are over the age of 12. 100% DISGUSTED! read more

You know what I like? A good mural.... I've always been interested in the size, detail, and theme of the murals around town. Well, they ain't got nothing compared to Highland Lanes. Not only does Highland Lanes have a beautiful (strange, interesting) mural depicting life in Austin, but it's also made of carpet..... which makes it so much cooler. How do you maintain a carpet mural? Vacuum it? A carpet mural is really the only thing I need for a 5 star review.... but then throw in an awesome party, some balloons, good smelling food, funny nicknames, bowling pin shaped beer bottles, and a bunch of crazy Yelpers and you got yourself a party. Finding a good ball is somewhat difficult (unless you're an elf with tiny hands) but it also adds to the fun. While you are looking there are endless amounts of "ball" jokes that await you. Also, the pins here seemed to be glued to the floor......I usually know how to handle my balls (the first ball jokes on me).....Highland Lanes proved to be a challenge and I left with my lowest score ever. But it didn't even matter...... I still had a great time. Highland Lanes was a strike in my book! read more

This review is for the Pro Shop at Highland.. I finally bought a brand new bowling ball for myself, and I needed to have the finger holes drilled. I'd been to their pro shop before, when I had a used ball resurfaced. The technician knew his business and charged a reasonable rate. When I came back this time there were different staff working, but I soon realized they were also well-steeped in bowling knowledge. One guy measured my hand and finger diameter, and in about 20 minutes had the ball drilled and ready. It seemed the holes were too snug, so he made them slightly larger and had me throw a few test balls down a lane for practice. I came back minutes later saying it was still too tight because the ball was making that suction popping sound like when you pop a cork off a bottle of wine. It was then that he realized I'd never been taught the proper way to roll a ball. I've always used a ball that was not custom fit and thrown it straight down the middle, always wishing I could make it curve to hit the pins just right. He sent me back out to work with another pro that was tutoring an older gentleman in the Art of the Roll. He traded off, teaching me and the other fellow, showing me an entirely different approach to the game. Free of charge! After I learned a few invaluable tips, I decided it was time to let him get back to tutoring and settle my drilling bill in the shop. He said $65 please.. $65! That's how much the ball cost! I had sticker shock for sure, but I figured it all evened out with the free lesson, and resurfacing the ball to "2000 grit" to better soak up the lane oils.. I learned a bit about how the pros roll, and I can't wait to perfect my style with a fresh ball. read more

Okay, I bowl. I bowl seriously. I don't drink beer and I'm not beer-bellied. I also don't participate in bowling leagues, because I don't drink beer and I'm not beer-bellied. The reason I bowl is because no matter how many golf and tennis lessons I've absorbed over the years, there was always someone younger, stronger, or faster than me who would just hand me my ass during serious competition. For me, there's no point in competing if I have little chance of winning, and since I can't defy the laws of physics, why bother? I got into bowling because it's the only athletic endeavor I've found where physical attributes like height, weight, age, and gender don't mean diddlysquat--it is truly the one great equalizer sport. There are few things I enjoy more than a friendly wager with some really huge bowler guy who's determined to smash the pins. Sweet. Ever wonder why you don't see televised tournaments pitting professional women bowlers against professional men? Because the beer-drinking beer-bellied ESPN crowd can't handle a woman kicking a man's ass on any given day. Thanks for the vent. I go to Highland Lanes on Sunday mornings because I can do three-hours of serious practice for $7, which is the best deal in town. If bowling is just a fun thing for you, try the Tuesday night Cosmic bowling or the party deals Sunday nights and late-night Friday & Saturday--you eat lots of popcorn, spend quality time with your buds, and get no argument from me. The only advice I ever give to casual bowlers is consider investing a little money for your own shoes and a cheap ball that's10% of your body weight and drilled for you--I promise you'll look cool, bowl better, and triple your fun factor. read more

The Sunday morning special has gone up to $8, but that's still a great value for unlimited bowling from 9:30 til noon, shoe rental included. They have some new bowling balls and the shoes have been updated as well. As fashionable as ever but they are new. The Sundy morning bunch is a mix of league bowlers that are getting in some practice time at a great rate and families, mostly with kids. Very diverse group. We've always had a great time and if you enjoy bowling it's a great deal. read more

So in high school I actually took bowling by correspondence instead of doing PE. It's true -- I am not the most athletic person and was terrified of having to run laps or something similarly embarrassing. So instead, i bowled. Learned how to score manually, wore "stylish" bowling shoes and spent way too much time at Flamingo Bowl. Fast forward to now and the smell of this place brings me back Shoes, sweat, fried food, despair, cleaning solution and polyester. Bowling alleys the whole world over smell like this at some point, esp. if they're an older establishment like this one. It's no frills, it's inexpensive, the equipment seems to be in good condition and they've got white russians. The drinks are pretty weak so I'd stick with beer... but they've got %3 blue moons. Walking into Highland lanes brought back a flood of childhood memories. Highland Lanes does a good job of maintaining the nostalgic 50's bowling atmosphere without the musty dingy smell that haunts other bowling establishments. Just walk into their bathrooms and you will see what I mean. Their bathrooms rival Buc-ee's in cleanliness. I loved that they had socks for purchase in the vending machine. They also have affordable quality food available at Lebowski's grill inside, which also has a full bar. The music playing was from all eras. We bowled several games and never had any equipment problems, or breakdowns. The service was friendly. Just pick up your shoes and get a lane when you enter, and then pay when you are ready done. I will definitely be coming back here for some future bowling fun. read more

Today, I bowled. I don't bowl, ordinarily. It was just a quick, goofy round with a friend, which was fun, but the alley itself, Highland Lanes, was pretty depressing. I guess it's a special kind of person who plays a serious game or two in the middle of an afternoon on a Tuesday. A special, mildly depressing kind of person. The pictures on the walls were of men's bowling champions from the 1980s, one for each year, and recipients of the alley's scholarship each year in the early 1990s. Apparently they haven't had either since, or maybe they just don't make up plaques anymore. I don't think their balls or shoes have been replaced since then -- my ball was severely gouged and scratched, and my neon yellow, red, grey and black shoes were very slick. The decor is dark wood paneling, neon and a pair of tacky, tacky, tacky carpet murals of Austin landmarks (the UT Towers even have working clocks!) and some weird blue amorphous figure that we couldn't place on opposite walls. For $10 and change, we got two sets of shoes and one game. Neither of us was very good -- I lost by about 20 points with a 64 -- but it was a good way to add a little oddity to an afternoon. read more

Errol and I have a lot in common. We are both easy on the eyes, we are both incredibly smart, and we are both serious bowlers. There are some key differences though. Unlike Errol, I will bowl league, and my game generally improves a bit after a couple of beers. As for the beer belly... I am working on getting rid of it through diet and exercise (but that is a different review for a different time). Anytime I feel like ditching the diet and getting my workout Walter Sobchak style, I hit up Highland. I frequent Highland Lanes because it is in my hood and I bowled league with some work friends there for awhile. The lanes are well kept and the staff is just friendly enough for a bowling alley. The food is also pretty decent considering it's Alley food. The jalapeno ranch they serve is pretty excellent, and the burgers are not bad at all. They have a decent selection of beers, and a full bar where the bartender "Al" will serve up all the "strike juice" you can handle. It's cold outside now. I hate the cold. So yelper Erik W and I decide to hit the lanes for some casual bowling. Just our luck, we hit it on gay day. While Erik and I are devastatingly handsome and smartly dressed, we are not, in fact a couple. Sorry boys. I did, however, enjoy the heavy rotation of Melissa Ethridge. Apparently we missed out on the Errol VIP Sunday morning discount. $18 for an hour of bowling...after my GoLocal discount....not including shoes....or beverages. Yeesh. When did being so unglamorous get so expensive? Highland was much cleaner than I expected, though the digital displays are from 1994. No, literally, watch the little cartoon animations, they have a date on them...psssttt, it's 1994. The lanes appeared well kept, and they get bonus points for a mildly funny Big Lebowski menu theme. Despite Erik's assurance that the food was quite good, I didn't feel like tempting the gods with a bowling alley lunch. Bowling with a group would have upped the fun factor and decreased the cost per person, we'll give that a go as winter deepens. The last time I went bowling anywhere was when VHS still existed. So I was a little apprehensive. Today's bowling alley is clean, smoke free and bright. It is much easier to concentrate on the game!! I had a wonderful time. And yes I had to rent shoes. But again, with clean air, the leather shoes themselves were pretty comfortable. Everything was so good. The food is t get me started. The food was so good every time I had the food it was like my tasted buds were having party. Also the bowling was so fun. They did give me the wrong shoes but it was a busy day so I got it fixed easily. The bowling was really fun. Also after that we did not want to leave but had to. So then when family came over we immediately took them here. After along ride for them they were exited. When we got there my family did not want to do anything. But we encourage stem and they agreed to. So they played some games and they stated having a lot of fun. Also when they tried the food they said the same thing we said. I've said before that I don't like to review places I have only been once. That's not what I am doing here, but it is close. I've been to Highland lanes a few times before, I even had a birthday gathering here once. My friends had cake, and Barbi plates to eat it off of. It was pretty much just your average bowling alley, and I didn't think much of it one way or the other. It's no Dart Bowl, certainly. It's amazing the difference the right people can make. Last night, the dashing Mr. Edison put together a great little un-official Yelp bowling event, and it was fantastic. There were about 15 of us, lots of us new to each other, and we all got along swimmingly. I had a fantastic time, and really didn't want it to end. We had some interesting moments, for sure. Jessica S. (the taller one) dropped the bowling ball backwards. Twice! We all had a good laugh, but a happy one, not mean-spirited. Carrie C. brought one of the coolest bowling balls ever, with Cartoon Networks Johnny Bravo, which she picked up at Goodwill. Tobi also brought her own ball, and looked like a real pro. Also, I bowled a 170, close to a personal best. Then again, I also fell down once to, fouled, and accidentally rolled the ball down the lane at about 2 inched per minute, and we all laughed while we waited, seemingly forever, for it to fruitlessly miss the only pin that was left. I was recently reminded that it was time to update this review. And, this place certainly deserves it. When I last rated Highland lanes, it was after only a few visits. But now that I have spent more time observing, I had to bump it up. The place is always clean and safe and welcoming. The kind of place you can take a date for a fun night, or the family for G rated fun. Sometimes they have the music pumped up and the atmosphere is energetic. Lots of fun. But, Highland has some really great people working there. Behind the counter, John and Ralph work hard to make sure you get on to a lane as quickly as possible. They are always friendly and polite, even when they are dealing with difficult people. How do I know, you ask? Well, because I pay attention while I am getting my lane. I watch people come up, like one woman saying the music is too loud, immediately by another saying the music is too low. How do they solve this dilemma, you ask? I have no idea, I don't stay for the resolutions, give me my lane and I'm out of there, but I can tell you that I wouldn't know what to do. But these guys remain courteous and polite to all. The lane attendants, like Aaron, are always quick to respond when your ball gets stuck or the pins fall forward instead of back. The lane attendants don't keep you waiting. Nor do they get upset if you are a particularly bad, needy bowler. In fact, they may even offer a helpful hint or two, every once in a while on how you may knock over more pins. And, who doesn't want to do that! I have to say that the old saying is familiarity can breed contempt. I have often found that to be true with many places. The more time I spend, the less I like it. I'm glad to say that is not the case with Highland lanes. I actually like the place more, the more time I spend there. So, my Yelp-migos, go! Check it out! I'm in a bowling league at work and we bowl here once a week. The place is pretty nice compared to the crappy alley where I used to live. They had a monopoly on bowling and would gouge our pockets with $3 games. At Highland you bowl by the hour, not by the amount of people bowling. Four people can easily get in two games for around $10 (If you have your own shoes and you're not slow). I'm not sure about wait time, but you should probably try to reserve a lane before you show up. The place always seems pretty crowded to me. read more

When I was younger I would swear to you that I liked all kinds of excitement and new things and plans changing and never knowing what to expect. I fear that kind of spontaneity in me has almost died. And, to be honest, I'm not all that sad about it. Nowadays I like knowing what time something starts, ends, and who is going with me. That also said, if I'm trying to get better at something then I have to find my groove and stick with it. To make a fourth statement in a row: Errol M. is a freaking bowling God. He has balls and shoes for every lane in Austin in his trunk. He'll swear to you he doesn't, but I've seen them (and also the body he keeps back there)! I'm finishing up my Senior year at Texas State University and taking a bowling class. We bowl in this tiny alley that smells like smoke, looks like it hasn't been renovated since 1992, and has perfectly greased lanes. I bowl two games there twice a week with this one particular ball--it's red and it has glitter...so much glitter. Errol and I like to bowl together sometimes; me for the practice, him to boost his ego because I'm horrible. We've been to almost every alley, and this one is my least favorite. Why? Well, I came here a month or two ago and every other frame set the pins would stick and we'd have to reset them. Also, I don't like the ambiance, and they don't have balls that fit my fingers. Yes, I did put BALLS and FINGERS together in the same sentence. You're welcome for the chuckle. The upside? You can bowl from 930am-1230pm on Sundays for $7. Yes, that's right, 3 hours of bowling PLUS shoes for $7. If you wanna bowl, get your butt up on Sundays and do it. read more

I am the Senior Event Designer for Competition Unlimited. After our location for the start and end of the Citywide Scavenger Hunt cancelled five days before the event, I talked to Sue, the Manager at Highland Lanes about using their location. She was very excited about the idea and found a way to let us use the party room even though they were going to be packed the day of the Hunt. They took wonderful care of us on the day of the event, and had a great time helping the teams with some of the more unusual items! I took my little brother, Jordan, in here last night and I definitely wasn't expecting an out of the ordinary experience but it worked out that way. Jordan is my little brother by way of Big Brothers, Big Sisters and this place gives a pretty good discount when we bowl here (half off and no charge for shoes). The discount, in and of itself is commendable but they went further once they heard it was Jordan's birthday. Dennis went to the back and got Jordan a full size bowling pin to take home as a present. He loved it and said it was the best day ever. Oh, how I wish a gift of a bowling pin could make me say something like that but it was really nice of them. We'll definitely keep coming back. My niece loves to bowl when she visits! I was not in the mood for main event tonight. We decided to check this place out.. And now wishing we didn't. My neice is a very petite 10 yr old.. Yes she is over 52 inches.. But not much.. To begin with they refused to let her use the bumpers.. Which was a little disappointing but she is trying to learn so we will deal with that. I asked the employees for a smaller ball since her wrist are tiny.. After arguing with me for 3 minutes the lady finally gave me a 7lb ball and threatened to charge my credit cArd if it broke.. Wow! I've been here twice now and I've definitely enjoyed myself both times. Bowling brings back a flood of childhood memories, but as an adult, bowling sober is kind of weird. Both times we have been here, it was on a Sunday morning so they're not serving yet- they have 8$ per person unlimited bowling till noon on sundays and free shoe rental. Otherwise, I believe the price is something like $27 an hour for a lane, and then $3 for shoes- ouch! Can't pass up the great price on Sunday AM. The building is old, the carpeting is bunched up and uneven, and the chairs are super uncomfortable here, but hey- its a bowling alley... hasn't it always been this way? Good news though, the bathrooms are like.... super nice. They have a little 'lounge' where you can grab a beer, and Lebowski's Grill is just about the best damn thing to ever grace the earth, so all in all, this place is a win. read more

Man. Friday night, $10 for all-you-can-bowl AND shoes, from 9p til close. What more do I need to say? We'd started out the night at Baby A's + arrived about ... shoot, I really can't even say. But we were able to snag one of the few lanes left -- the people around us were fun, the bartender was hilarious (I can't say how much drinks were, but I know the guys were drinking bottles and not pitchers, which maybe Highland could remedy). Too bad there weren't any more lighter bowling balls that weren't Finger Size Extra Tiny. But seriously. So. Much. Fun. I was excited when I bowled a .. 57, maybe? so maybe that tells you how much bowling I've done. But man, black lights? Disco balls? (At least, I think there were disco balls... um, and black lights -- there was definitely some neon business happening) Good times, HL + bowling. read more

Ah this place, for me it is nostalgic. So I don't mind the warn look of the carpeted murals or the million dings in the bowling balls. It certainly isn't new and to be fair could be fixed up here or there but I've never not had a blast here. Set up with 6 beers and come late and relax with friends. I know there are better places or perhaps even cheaper places to bowl but I do like this place a lot. The staff is friendly and the bathrooms are clean so this place certainly isn't bad. I would say it's great for a comfortable, cheap place to bowl with your friends or kids. There are times where it is cheaper than normal too so you can always check before coming in but they are never crazy packed so you can always grab a lane. Overall, it's average but it's been around a while and I frequent it. Although, I would bring my own shoes and ball if I owned them. read more

I checked this place out on Monday night and was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance. The lighting was good and the lanes were well maintained with just enough oil. Strangely, this bowling alley only charges by time and not by game. They charge 0.35 cents per min or $21 per hour with up to 6 per lane (but w/o shoes which are $2.50). Since it was just my wife and I bowling, we opted for 30 min which came out to $15.50 w/ shoes. We had just enough time to finish 2 full games, but pretty much w/o any rest or time to chat. This place is on the pricier side for normal, everyday rates, but it's a good alternative to DART bowl which is always packed. Check out the Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday specials. read more

This is a decent place to go bowling. It is really showing its age but overall, we had a great time and the pricing was decent. We went on a Friday night with a group of 14 people and took up several lanes. Not only were there lanes available on a Friday night which was delightful, but they got us in quickly - shoes and all and we were set to bowl. The snack bar closed shortly after we got there, but the bar was open all night which was nice. Drink prices weren't all that bad. The cosmic bowling was a nice touch, and we all enjoyed it. It's a pretty standard bowling alley. It's grungy, they serve fried food, and there's a vending machine of socks. You can get a beer for 3 bucks which is pretty incredible. the wife wanted us to learn to bowl. partly because I FOUND a bowling ball. never mind my ball was too heavy for me, only has two holes, and those two holes are way too big for my fingers. sunday morning is when you want to go put in some time in rolling balls. $7 will get you a lane and shoe rental, the deal ends at noon. we found it was harder to get up and rolling that early, until we gave into buying breakfast from them. $1.99 breakfast tacos from the lebowski grill made the difference. on the third sunday, we had successfully advanced our rolling skill. we did find that all lanes were take due to a tournament on one visit, that was hard to take after gettip out of the house early on a sunday. might be worth a call first to check the league is not rolling around. read more

I enjoy this place so much that I gave it four stars to keep the game interesting. I have never struck out here. I did have to take a star off because of the prices of the alcoholic beverages. I got a tiny White Russian there for a honker price, and that is caca. As far as the place goes, it is everything one would expect for a bowling alley: rental shoes, a small bar, snacks, decent prices, the whole nine, or ten. The only thing missing is a rug, I think the rug would really tie the room together. I have taken my own shoes before and they were cool with it. I think bowling is magnificent, so I will pretty much be happy wherever I go to do it. I have always gone in groups when coming here, and know that it can cost anywhere from $10-$25 per person, once you boil it all down. read more

Oh Highland Lanes, the semi ghetto bowling place of my youth. Many a high school night my friends and I would plan to meet, bowl, and stare longingly at the adults buying beers at the shady bar, or eating greasy food. Even as other, snazzier bowling joints seem to spring up all over north Austin, Highland Lanes some how continues to hold its own. Playing hip hop music and selling socks out of a vending machine in the corner, this place sure hasn't changed. When my adult friends and I check ed it out years later, we realized bowling is about the same wherever you go. For a cheap game, go here. There is not usually much of a wait, even on a weekend night. The other thing we learned is this, bowling is also much cooler if you drink while you do it. We went to Highland Lanes because it was the closest bowling alley to our house. It was a Sunday night and we got there at about 7:30pm. My husband and I paid 20.00 for both of our shoe rentals and unlimited bowling for at least the next two hours. We tried nachos as Lebowski's Restaurant that is inside of HIghland lanes. They were great! The bowling alley was very clean and we had a very nice time. I would have given them a 5 except the automatic scorekeeper messed up a few times. It wasn't a big deal. It gets very crowded by 8pm. The music was loud on Sunday nights so keep that in mind if you don't like that. We will go back! read more

Good neighborhood bowling lanes. It's not cheap, but they have lots of deals. The best is if you get the Go Local card (Highland Lanes sells them) it's $2 off per person. The card is only $10, so it will pay for itself in no time, considering it gets you discounts at dozens of other places too. The bar is quick, the lanes are clean, and the AC is always cranking. The house balls are pretty beat up, so if you are at all serious, buy your own. The staff is also very nice and will help you get going quickly. I guess computerized scoring is pretty standard now, but I appreciate it anyway. read more
