Ever in search of additional passport stamps, my wife and I stopped into the Highland Pub for lunch this last Sunday. This particular McMenamins location, like many of their smaller locales, doesn't have any of the features that make a McMenamins stand out above the crowd. Sure, the décor is cozy, warmly lit and filled with that special hippie kitsch, but at the end of the day, it's just a pub...although a quirky one! Service was...serviceable: punctual and efficient, although not particularly engaging. Still, our drinks, soup and sandwich all arrived in short order. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the African Peanut Chicken soup, being not much of a fan of peanut anything. The seasonal special Roadhouse Crispy Chicken Sandwich was great as well, but its description on the menu is a bit deceptive: it boasts Dark Star hot sauce, but apparently they just mix it into the butter used on the bread which, in my opinion, is not enough. However, we ordered a side of the sauce, and once applied, perfected it. The Highland Pub isn't going to transform your opinion of the McMenamins franchise on its own, but it's also not doing any damage to the brand, either. Come here for a solid lunch paired with a pint or cocktail of your choice, and some reasonable expectations, and you'll leave satisfied.

First time visiting this Mcmenamins. We were surprised to see a lot of string lights all over the rafters to illuminate the restaurant. We order a cheeseburger and bacon cheeseburger and a Trippy Cider, which consists of mixture of pomegranate, peach and pineapple juices. That was delicious. Highly recommended it. A good tart and sweet taste to it. I ordered regular tater tots and it was crispy when I received it. Of course, I finished the tater tots and my cider right away. My burger was medium rare. Perfect.

Still coming here even though I moved further away! The Diablo burger with the garden patty is my classic go to item. We prefer to sit out side as often as we can to minimize contact with other customers. On tap they have a nice bodacious mocha stout on nitro

We've passed by this place so many times and never realized it was owned by McMenamins. We really enjoyed our first lunch here. The employees were very friendly and the decor is kitschy and fun. My sandwich (BLT+A) was absolutely delicious and the other half really enjoyed his burger and tots. The beer and cider list is limited but the choices are fantastic. Can't wait for our next visit!

Super good lunch. Cajun tots were delish. Mojito was perfect. Had the El Diablo chicken sandwich. Chicken was juicy. All came together real nicely with a raspberry mojito

    My passport prize!!

Last stop for the passport prize. Very nice waitress who kept apologizing for being out of my beer choices. Finally found one in the sunflower ipa. Tasty choice! Low key decor as far as Mcmenamins goes. Standard pub food options.

Traditional beef gyro (16.25) with fries

My gyro was absolutely delicious. It was a lot larger then expected which left me with left overs for the next day.. and it was still good the next day! Although I will say their fries are not as good as they once were. They used to have one of my favorite fries in town, but this time was disappointing. Their fries were NOT the same. They were not very seasoned, a different shape, and just kind of flavorless. I used to come here and just order fries to go, now I definitely would not order the fries again:(

Had food delivered by Postmates. They forgot my drink. Both of our burgers were cooked on the outside but raw burger in the middle. It was sloppy work. The type that will get people sick. There's a pandemic going on guys, how about you try just a little?

Great service, great drinks, and the best pizza I've had in decades!…read more The beers Backwoods makes are all delicious and smooth-drinking. The service staff was all exceptional. But the pizza! Off the charts!, FULL REVIEW of all Services: If anyone who enjoys hiking, river fishing, or just a general outdoor-focused vacation wants a good, simple getaway with their spouse/loved one, check out the Backwoods brand in Carson, Washington (just north-northeast of Bridge of the Gods/Cascades Locks). Backwoods Cabins offers a really great overnight stay option. The 8 cabins there are all basic "two-room" designs (bedroom and attached bathroom, and a living room / mini-kitchen room). The cabins sport king-sized beds, a gas fireplace and outdoor fire, a mini kitchen with refrigerator/freezer and microwave (no stove/range). I think 3 of the 8 cabins welcome dogs. The Backwoods brand also owns Backwoods Brewery, which is just across the road from the cabin property. They have great microbrew beers (from light lagers to GREAT stouts!). The brewery also has a smokehouse, with fantastic smoked brisket, pulled pork, and house-made sausage/brats. But even better, the Backwoods Brewery offers the BEST PIZZA I've had in decades. The pizza dough is a perfect balance of flavor and texture. It's not too thin and not too thick. The crust is chewy in the middle, with a great crusty edge and base. The red sauce (they also have a white sauce we didn't try) is thick and rich, with a few tomato chunks. It's got a slight spicy bite with a sweet finish. They also have some unique house pizzas. We tried the Whistle Punk - Red sauce, bacon, smoked brisket, peppadew peppers, sweet onions, fresh mozzarella rounds - and the Pepperoni Express - Red sauce, pepperoni, mushrooms, tomatoes, banana peppers, smoked mozzarella. Both were outstanding. I'd go so far as to say both Donna and I deemed these the best pizzas we've had in 35+ years (noting that our first date was at a pizza joint in Fife we both thought was the best-ever pizza). If you stay in the Backwoods Cabins, you get two coupons for free drinks at the brewery (beer/wine/cider/cocktails) as well as an assortment of snacks for your hiking adventures, and a full S'mores kit to use over the gas fire pit. And if you are in a dog-friendly cabin, you get complimentary treats, and water/food bowls for your canines.

Gluten free review:…read more Came here after a hike because I believe in balance, climb a hill, eat a pizza. Thrilled they had gluten-free options. Tried the Tree Hugger 10" GF pizza and it was genuinely tasty. The crust? So good. The staff? Kind. The price? About $20, which felt a little "ouch," but the pizza did not, and that's what matters. The place was fun and great ambiance. Take a fun trip and go try this place out.

So much art to look at, curiosities tucked in every corner, space to roam and explore! - Get the passport to make your stay even more rewarding and fun! I love the scavenger hunts and the stamps force you to do things you might not normally do on your own accord. - The full pitch and putt course is a relaxing and a fun way to spend a few hours. It was only $25 per person and took us 3 hours. - I signed up for the Makers Tour and highly recommend it! Lots of tastings and great historical facts along the way. - The soaking pools at night were perfect to relax muscles right before bed plus no kids after 8pm. - This hotel doesn't revolve around children. The movies that were showing were rated R and most of the pubs and pool hall are 21+. Kids are welcome - but I've never seen that many kids around which I like, personally. - It's very Dog Friendly!! - The live music is incredible. I've been here for big concerts on the lawn plus mini concerts down the winery hall. They were all amazing. - It can get noisy between 7-11pm especially in weekends! The building is old - not sure about insulation and things! Bring some earplugs, a positive attitude and maybe enjoy an extra drink! Or go during the week for a quieter experience. - The food is a bit pricey but if you are doing the passport it makes a little more sense. Some of my favorites are the Cajun Tots, Portland Dip, any Burger, and the Bagel and Lox Breakfast is Incredible!!!

The Highlights * The Saltwater Outdoor Pool: This was the absolute highlight of our stay. The water is kept at a perfect 38°C (100°F), making it incredibly relaxing. I highly recommend visiting after 8:00 PM when the pool becomes an 21+ area. * Thoughtful Details: The robes provided were high quality and very comfortable. Pro-tip: Be sure to bring flip-flops for the walk to and from the pool area. * Art & Dining: The murals throughout the hotel are fascinating to look at. We also had great experiences at the on-site bars and the Black Rabbit Restaurant, where both the food and the service were excellent. The Room & Stay Quality We specifically booked a room with a private bathroom and shower. However, most rooms at this location utilize communal facilities. Unfortunately, our room was located very close to the shared bathrooms and lavatories. Due to a complete lack of etiquette from other guests using those facilities, it was extremely noisy throughout the night. Because of the poor sleep quality and the noise levels, we likely won't be staying here again. It's a beautiful property, but the layout and noise issues made it difficult to fully enjoy our birthday celebration.
