Went there today for lunch and ordered chicken strips and sweet potatoes fries. Chicken was dry and breading tasted like fish. Fries were overdone. My husband ordered ham and it was dry. My daughter ordered chili and it wad bland. Nothing was good. I won't be back. read more

I would like start by saying I was pleasantly surprised during my meal. I came here on a night they had prime rib, my favorite. Normally I wouldn't give much thought to prime rib outside of a specialty steak house but I have to say their prime rib is the best in the Cedar Valley, better than any chain steak house and the local steak houses as well. I had a baked potato for my side that was baked to perfection, a nice crusty skin with a soft hot inside that melted soaked up the butter. I also got their French onion soup which is clearly homemade and again tops to the cooks on this soup. Another best for the Cedar Valley. The prime rib also came with a nice side salad and a wonderful homemade creamy garlic dressing (would love the recipe). I had a bite of their cheese frenchies from somebody at my table and that was amazing as well. Family owned and it showed, the staff was sincere and really went the extra mile in their service. Very little wait if there is a wait and well worth any wait at all. Amazing dining experience!! read more

The restaurant was recommended from some relatives, and I'm glad we took the recommendation! For lunch I tried their French onion soup. It had a delightful flavor, although the cheese they used added a thin layer of oil to the top... It was still worth it! I had never had a "frenchy" before (a deep fried grilled cheese sandwich) but very much enjoyed it, it's an interesting concept that worked out well. For dinner I enjoyed a grilled chicken wrap marinated in seasoning. A typical wrap includes lettuce and tomato, they went the extra step by adding onions and cucumbers. The onions were a bit overpowering, as raw onions can be, but the ranch mixed with the chicken juices at the bottom of the wrap became absolutely divine. Their three-cheese pasta was wonderful as well, the pasta was slightly overcooked but the cheeses made up for it... They were light and not greasy. The only drawback was the salad. Although the creamy garlic dressing was the stuff of dreams, the salad itself was just a simple shredded salad mix that tasted like it came from a bag. Can't recommend that at all, but the garlic dressing would be great in any five-star. read more

First impression of the Hwy 63 Diner was very good. It's nice and clean and the people are friendly. The Prime Rib Sandwich was pretty good, although it was cold and not even close to being rare. (It was well-done). They wanted to charge me an extra $1 for bleu cheese dressing, which I thought was kind of ridiculous after I'd spent over $40 for the three of us. Our waitress was really great and had a wonderful sense of humor even when I was giving her a hard time about the additional charge for the dressing. My wife had broasted chicken, which was very good, but the pieces were very small. We'll definitely go back since we live only two minutes away, but for now it's not our first choice. I've heard this is a Landau restaurant, but not sure. I wish there were a way to rate at 2.5 or 2.75 stars as it wasn't really A-OK, but somewhere between meh and A-OK. read more

After being on the road several hours. My friend and I were tired. We decided to take the first Waterloo exit and go to the first restaurant we saw. What a find it was! A quiet and relaxing restaurant. Excellent food! And you get plenty of it! I loved having a salad with shredded lettuce. The dressing made it even better! The fish dinner I ordered was cooked to perfection. My friend went with the chicken wrap. Unlike so many wraps this one actually had a lot of chicken! Made a reservation with high expectations based on high praise from others familiar with the restaurant. Service from staff was very engaging and appropriate across the board. The house garlic dressing was quite good but the salad served just as chopped lettuce in a bowl family style was underwhelming. The French onion soup tasted more like vinegar slaw and had no taste of traditional beef broth. So if it was supposed to be vegetarian I didn't see that. Others at table had items they described as bland and non memorable. Im sure its reasonable and consistent, just not for me. read more

If the ratings could be divided between food and service this would be easier. I absolutely love their homemade salad dressings and their classic sub. Their broasted chicken and potatoes are also really good. Unfortunately, I cannot find anyone to eat here with me because the service is so poor they do not want to go back. In particular, the host has been so rude to many people I know that I would give the service a 0. If you can get take out from here do so, and then you can enjoy the food without the drama. read more

We were concerned about stopping here after reading the reviews BUT we were pleasantly surprised. For a diner, this restaurant was pretty good. And the prices were average. The homemade salad dressings were delectable. The BEST Thousand Island I have had. I would buy more to take home if we were not in a road trip. The kids meals were large and less than $5 including beverage. The service was fantastic! I don't know what the other reviews were talking about because were were greeted & sat immediately. What a surprise! It was getting close to lunch, no idea where to eat, fired up the Garmin, found this place - just ahead about 0.7 miles! Usually diners have good food, reasonable prices, so why not try it. The place wasn't busy - but it was 1:30 PM. Plenty of menu choices - all nicely priced. We ordered the rib-eye steak ($16.99). First came a salad - in a large bowl with two smaller ones (family style they said) - four homemade dressings - all tasty! Enough salad for two small bowls each (full - not half full!). Steaks came perfectly cooked (medium rare - leaning toward rare), sweet potato fires for her, steamed veggies for me. Bit of sugar and spice on the fries; veggies still were crunchy (not wilted). Nice! Waitress was attentive, knowledgeable, and not intrusive - VERY pleasant! All-in-all - a great experience and definitely worth a visit when you're in the area! read more

The food is a 3-4, the service can be a 0-5 depending on who you get. The owner needs to brush up on his social skills, very poor. When they screw up they need to comp something or give a dessert etc. That is part of the problem with too many of the places (food/hair/auto service etc etc) in the Cedar Valley, they don't know how to right a wrong. Always consistently good, except for some specials & steaks. Tonight I enjoyed a very good hand-battered chicken fried steak and hubby a filet of beef. Both very well prepared. All-you-care-to-eat lettuce salads with homemade house dressings, their French reminds me of Tally-Ho's brand Trio Treat from my childhood. Creamy garlic is used on my second serving of lettuce. Homemade or at least house-baked dinner rolls are fabulous with real butter, I prefer wheat, hubby likes white. The desserts also made in house; the pies come from Kathy's except for the malt shoppe flavor. Excellent wait staff who have been there for years are very attentive. read more

My wife & I had dinner there on Thursday night around 5pm. My wife had a walleye sandwich and salad and thought it to be very good, except for the salad which was out of a bag & could have been fresher. Her sister had a half rack of ribs & the meat was fall off the bone good. Since Iowa is known for breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches that's what I ordered. It came with your choice of salad or French fries for $9.99. I chose the salad because of how good the dressings are. The dressings were very good but the salad mix tasted a little old. My tenderloin sandwich was awful! It came on a regular hamburger bun & although I ask for mustard & onion it had a little lettuce & mayo(?) and no onion. The tenderloin itself was over cooked, the meat dry on the edges. The waitress ask how everything was and I told her that for less money I could have had a better tenderloin plus fries & drink for less. The waitress ask if she could get me something instead & I declined because I didn't want the other two to have to wait on me. The restaurant should be ashamed serving such a sandwich & for a crazy high price! The waitress did get me a slice of onion after I told her they didn't put any on and in the end took $2.00 off the total bill although I told her it wasn't necessary. I gave her a 20% tip because her service was good. I would never go there again and order a tenderloin! Maybe the owner should go to Culver's and try theirs. I got a recommendation for thus place from the fine folks at the John Deere tractor museum. When I got there, it looked like a generic modern diner, and it was. I ordered the grouper platter with salad and steamed veggies. The salad was just lettuce, but it was chopped into thin pieces, was chilled properly, and I was supplied with 4 home made dressings. The salad was also bottomless. I had two rounds of salad to try more of the dressings. Dressings were outstanding. The fish seemed like it may have been previously frozen, which is what I would expect in the middle of the US, but it was cooked to perfection and served at the perfect temp. The subtle spices were a great compliment. The steamed veggies were also steamed perfectly, not raw, not soggy. The staff was excellent and attentive. The food was not gormet, but for a diner, this was first rate. If you want a great meal, I highly recommend. read more

Horrible experience. I was with my two young children and my husband's family--traveling through Iowa on our way back to Minnesota. I ordered the three-cheese pasta, which looked awesome, but tasted terrible. Instead of being rude, I politely told our waitress "it just wasn't what I thought it would be..." and I ate some chicken from my husband's plate. 20 minutes later, the OWNER approaches our table of ten and tells me I SHOULD NOT HAVE ORDERED THAT MEAL IF I WASN'T GOING TO EAT IT!!! In the rudest fashion I've ever witnessed, he went on to throw an adult tantrum [in front of other guests too] and tell our table that he was going to take a loss on my meal. My sister-in-law stepped in and told the owner it was not okay for him to speak to ME or our table like that. She told him that I wasn't looking for a free dinner, the meal just TASTED HORRIBLE so I didn't want to eat it! Long story short, WE PAID FOR MY MEAL AND GOT OUT OF THERE! I felt sorry for all the waitresses, who were obviously not satisfied with the owner and how they were being treated either. My advice is to stay out of this place. read more

Husband and I went there on a referral from a local last night. He ordered the Prime Rib- $18.99 - Big slice of meat, excellently prepared and right on Medium Rare. I had the chef salad, very good with the homemade garlic dressing. My only complaint would be the shredded lettuce. I also had the four cheese pasta as a side (great flavor and creamy luscious.) My husband had cottage cheese instead of salad and mashed potatoes with his meat. The whole wheat rolls tasted like they just came out of the oven, delish!! Our server was attentive and very nice. The host was the major domo of the ownership team. He was fast, nice and impeccably dressed. We will come again in our future trips to the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. We like the fact that the parking is easy and they take credit cards!! Try the place and find out the great variety of options to eat at dinner. You are not limited to only full dinner meals. The manager was very huffy, almost rude, when we asked where our group was seated. Food is nothing special. Manager was a jerk. Host was not pleasant as well. We were sitting waiting for some friends and the restaurant was half empty and he complained to us we were holding up his tables during his busy time when there were almost more empty than filled.
