Our Hampton Inn for the evening recommended this Mom & Pop place for supper this evening. "I have yet to have a customer who was unhappy.!" She was right! Great food, fresh food, amazing, great prices, friendly service from a hard working staff! The fact that the place was packed belies the mediocre overall rating on Yelp! Don't believe it! We stop in every time we stay and the Comfort Inn 1 block away. The service is top notch and the food is great, especially the burgers and the nachos. The prices are also reasonable. We always have a few drinks from the bar and have not been disappointed yet. read more

What happened to my Southtown? The WORST gizzards I have ever gotten there. I came for pick up 20 minutes after putting in order. Usually they are piping hot, crunchy juicy delicious. These looked like they were abused, poor things, not cooked to perfection, kind of gray, and cool to the touch. Not Southdown's standards for sure! My dogs loved them though. I love this place and hope very soon they are fully staffed and back to the food I usually get from them. read more

I agree with everything else said here. The place doesn't look like much from the outside but I was pleasantly surprised when we walked in. Very clean and a very friendly wait staff. We came early on Saturday evening and the place was packed with old folks - always a good sign that the food is good. I got the fried chicken and it's right up there with the best. The food came out piping hot and very delicious and VERY reasonable. French silk pie - yum. This is some good down home eats right here. Highly recommended. read more

I and my wife had to be in town for a few days so we decided to try this place and it was great good food and friendly staff.

Great bar food. Mozzarella sticks are obviously the frozen variety, but were bite size pieces that I have never seen before. Dipping sauce was some odd mix of mayo, salsa, and ranch dressing----um no thanks please! Rather dip them in my own snot. Now the breaded tenderloin was something special! Hand cut of pork with nice breading deep fried to perfection. If they had asked for my suggestion, they should have toasted the bun that would have been a nice touch, but bun was just a cold in toasted one. Either way, good sandwich. Draft beer is cold. Three flat screen televisions. Huge Budweiser Clydesdale mural on one wall. Bar seats about 12 patrons. 15 tables seat plenty more! read more

This place is nothing fancy on the inside, but the food is cheap & good! The server informed me about the special & what the restaurant is known for. I ordered the broasted chicken (thigh & breast), coleslaw, & hash-browns. I also ordered the fried pickle spears. Everything came out hot. The chicken was juicy. Very average food. Side salad was shredded iceberg lettuce, partially, preciously frozen cucumbers, including the end piece, chopped tomatoes & store bought croutons. Grilled chicken sandwich cooked fine but had little to no flavor. Mustard & jalapenos delivered the only tasty bites. Bun was so soggy didn'teat it & needed a fork & knife. Beer was cold & hit the spot after a very long day. Sir Grumpicus behind the bar. Service is not their strong point. Acted like it was an imposition to take my order, drop off food, pour beer & especially get a water upon request. If walking from nearby hotel, like I did, the exterior lighting sucks. The waitress was nice and tried her best but food was not very good and the other person in parties can of beer was warm and he nicely told waitress and she took back to bartender who was very rude about it as we could hear him. Great place to eat. The food is good and satisfying. The only problem that I had was the bartender who is friendly to everyone that came into the establishment except me. I'm going to point out but not openly insinuate that I was the only person there not Caucasian. The waitresses really represent Iowa as they are warm,welcoming and very patient. On a big road trip and we stopped in Waterloo for the night. We asked at our hotel where a good place was and he highly recommended the nearby Southtown. As soon as we walked in we knew we were in the right spot. It smelled so good! They have typical bar food, sandwiches, and specials. They also had pizza on the menu, but we didn't see anyone order that. My mom and friend ordered burgers that they really enjoyed. I couldn't pass up the broached chicken which was fantastic. My mom and I also ordered soup. It was homemade and served piping hot. My mom had the chicken noodle and loved it. I got something called cheeseburger chowder and found it to be one of the best cheese-based soups I've ever had. Their French fries and tater tots ( a fun menu selection) were also really good and rounded out our night in high-quality bar food paradise! If you're in the area and looking for some good eats, don't be afraid to stop here. read more

A little underwhelming to be honest. The only things going for it are the facts that it is close to the hotels and that it isn't a chain restaurant. The service at the bar leaves much to be desired, and the food is just about alright. I had the tenderloin sandwich which was too dry and a beer from the tap that was too flat. This food was horrible! We paid over $100 for food, didnt get half of what we ordered and when we called to let them know, they said we were not charged for it even when we had it on our receipt! I eat here at least once every time I stay at the Holiday Inn, which is right across the parking lot. Great bar and grill with a terrific menu and daily specials. Food is great... Good pizza and very good burgers...lots of delicious choices. About 5 or so different beers on tap. Clean, friendly, professional, affordable, and consistent. read more

A friend of mine got a ribeye steak, which he ordered medium. He ordered medium, but got well done on his first steak, than he said something to the waitress and he got another steak, which was well done on the outside and rare on the inside. Somehow it didn't have grill marks or a crust, so either it was microwaved or only baked in the oven. A disgrace. Absolutely horrible service and they took forever and messed up our drinks. I wouldn't choose this place if it was all I had in town. Avoid coming here, nasty on the outside, and even worse on the inside! read more

Hadn't been to Southtown since I was young, so I decided to order take-out for lunch. I went with the buffalo chicken wrap with jalapeños and a side of fries. It was only a quick 10 minute wait. I think the wrap could've been a bit bigger, but it tasted very fresh. Also incredibly spicy, the thing was loaded with hot sauce! The fries were okay, nothing special. I was in town for work, and the hotel nearby recommended Southtown for a beer and some food. The menu is extensive, very well priced, and the food was delicious. Great service as well. I went back the next day for lunch, and then again for dinner. Great value. It was busy, not packed, the three times I went there mid-week. If I'm ever in Waterloo again I probably will not be going back to this resturant. We walked in at about 7 pm and to our surprise we were the youngest people in the whole place. We were stared at almost the whole time by the staff and other patrons like we were animals in a zoo. Im not sure if it was because of our age, the fact that we had an interracial couple in our group, or that we also had a lesbian couple with us. A tv near us had a baseball game when we arrived and shortly after it was changed to the God channel. I'm hoping that was a coincidence. Came here for a drink and to watch basketball on a Saturday afternoon. The staff was AWESOME. Very attentive, even asking me what game I would like to watch before I even said anything about wanting to watch one. The place was clean, and food coming out smelled awesome for what it's worth.
