A Pleasant Surprise with a Small-Town Feel This one caught me off guard--in a good way. I was out with my family practicing for my daughter's driving test at the DMV up the street. We pulled up Yelp to find a good lunch spot, saw the solid reviews, and decided to give it a try. When we walked in, the atmosphere had that small-town vibe--simple, welcoming, and comfortable. The food was very good. The service wasn't polished like a Michelin star restaurant, but it didn't need to be. It was authentic and heartfelt, and sometimes that matters more. You could tell the staff cared about what they were doing. The place was busy, especially for the time of day we went, which tells you something. People come here on purpose. That says a lot. We were seated quickly, our order was taken without any issues, and the food came out in a reasonable time. When it hit the table, the portions were generous and satisfying. I wish I had taken pictures, but I was too busy enjoying the moment. If you go, post your photos--I'm sure the business would appreciate it. If you've followed my reviews, you know I don't give out 4 stars often, and 5 stars are rare. This place earned that extra star because of how it made me feel--between the food, the atmosphere, and the service, it just worked. We dine here fairly frequently, maybe once a month. The wait staff was good as usual, but I ordered a Patty Melt that definitely was sub par to any Patty Melt I ever have ordered anywhere!! There was only one very thin slice of cheese and only a few pieces of onion!! When I asked the waitress if I was in fact given a patty melt she said our patty melts don't have cheese!! Really!! We're trying to find some place to eat on New Year's Day in the Jackson, CA area. I found this restaurant on Yelp with good reviews. It was a little hard to find the restaurant, they need to update their signage. We walked into a cute spot and seated right away! We shared the Pastrami Reuben on toasted sourdough, it was delicious and we each got the French Onion soup, it was so so good!!! We found a winner today! The staff is super friendly and attentive. We decided to stay for a beer at the bar and watch the football game. The only thing to be aware of is the bathroom floors are extremely sticky. Worst service ever. I don't even care about the food. When you wait 30 minutes just to have your order taken, that's ridiculous. I had to ask the waitress to please take our order. Strong 4.5 review but rounded up considering that ff you find yourself in this area for brunch, this is the top spot. Great comfort food with above average hospitality. It really doesn't make a difference if you are in the mood for ham or steak and eggs, any of the burgers or the turkey avocado melt, it is all filling and tasty. The food here is always good. The breakfast quiche is phenomenal. You can literally taste every vegetable in there. And it's not just onions and peppers. There is broccoli, mushrooms, spinach soooo good. The fruit is always fresh and delicious. Service is always kind and smiles. It's usually busy but not so much that you can't get in. read more

*First time review* Absolutely love this place! I guess I had a sandwich here quite a few years ago, but I don't recall so I'll be calling this a new review. My gosh absolutely fantastic! Ambience is redone, nice bar, attentive staff and big sandwiches! Loved my soup as well. BLAST - bacon lettuce avocado swiss turkey. I ordered mine on sourdough toasted with no Swiss. Absolutely fantastic and they made it as I wanted. Do note it does not come with mayo, you'll need to ask for that if you want it. Omg! We LOVE this place! We have taken so many of our friends here. Their food is sooo good! It's comfort food. They make homemade muffins and serve them like they are toast. With warm whipped butter. My fav is the carrot raisin one! They have a full bar. I would recommend the Bloody Mary. It's in it's own class. They also made me a nice Irish Coffee around St. Patrick's day. The service is right on and they have a patio that welcomes dogs. They even brought our little Sunny her own water bowl! I would highly recommend this place the next time you are going through Jackson. They are right on Highway 49 in a small shopping center next to a fireplace and bbq store. We came here for a late brunch while in town for a wedding! We were feeling breakfast and I liked that they serve breakfast pretty late here. Some of the other reviews mention this place has a diner vibe which I could see from their menu. However, the inside does not feel like a diner at all. The interior composed of hardwood floors, string lights, and a large bar do not feel like a diner at all; it feels more like a traditional American food restaurant where you'd come for a group meal. My husband got the Breakfast Burrito and I went with the Chile Verde three egg omelet. We both really liked our food! Their salsa was great to add to both of these entrees. I really liked the chile verde on my eggs, it had a slight spice to it and tasted great with the salsa and sour cream. My husband wished his burrito came with some of the chile verde on top! Both the breakfast potatoes and hashbrowns were crispy and filling. The muffin that came with my entree stole the show! It was a blueberry muffin that was served warm, it tasted freshly baked and was perfect. Service was good, our waters and my coffee were refilled in a timely manner. Staff were nice and attentive. On our first visit to the HIGHWAY HOUSE in Jackson, CA, we were pleasantly surprised by the cozy dining room and bar and had an excellent experience from being seated with little wait, fast beverage service, ordering and food delivery. The food was fresh, favorable and perfectly prepared. Presentation was also well done. Portions were large and exactly as stated on menu. I had the Spaghetti and my husband had the steak, both with house salads, baked potato for my husband and sourdough bread. Not familiar with this area at all and there wasn't much to choose from when it came to restaurants. Of course I checked yelp and this place looked promising. The inside looks nothing like what I expected. From the outside, I was expecting more of breakfast and coffee vibe, but I was pleasantly surprised it was not. Our waitress was very nice and gladly split our order of their large burger. The food was actually really good. We were definitely satisfied with our whole experience. If you are ever in Jackson and would like a great place to dine casually, come visit this place. This was my first time here and at 1:30pm on a Tuesday it was pretty busy. We were seated pretty fast next to the windows. It is great that they serve breakfast here past Noon. I decided to order the Steak and eggs. I requested medium rare for my sirloin steak, however, it arrived med well and dry. I asked our waitress to take a look at it and she was nice about it and agreed it did not appear as ordered. The new steak came out perfectly charred and juicy enough. Great country potatoes with eggs not overly salted. My friend ordered the grillled salmon over salad greens and stated that the salmon was fresh and the greens and dressing complimented it well. I am a member of a Motorcycle Group out of Manteca and we occasionally frequent this establishment for breakfast. We have never had a bad experience and the food and service has been mostly excellent. About two months ago there were six or eight of us having breakfast and all of us got our meal except one of our party. He had to wait 20 minutes before his food came. Generally this place is good, when I visit family in Jackson we meet for breakfast on our last day together. My recent visit on Sunday was a bad experience with the staff person just as callous. Eating my scramble I found a very large long hair imbedded in my food while chewing. I was bummed the dish was tasty. I showed this to the server who said she'd remake the dish, and when a new fish came back it was substandard. No flavor, undercooked. The main thing is I expected some sort of concession for having their employee's hair wadded up in my mouth and hood, nothing offered, actually a lack of care overall. It's too bad as I had much better servers who I believe would have gone more to accommodates hair filled dish. Maybe the management who needs to address this might read and respond. read more

Lunch today at Highway House was excellent. The side salad was huge and fresh, and served with two dressing cups. Most impressive. The French dip was ample and very good. I have had many French dips from a competing spot and these are far superior. Service was very good and my drink was kept full. The inside is clean and the overall dining area is nicely kept. I came in from out of town today to take my mom to lunch. The food and service were excellent. At the end of lunch my mom had a medical emergency. The owners jumped on my cell phone during the 911 call to take over for me as I wasn't sure of the location and was in a bit of a panic. They and the staff along with other customers were truly amazing with how much they all jumped in to help. As my mom was being taken by ambulance I was gathering our belongings and was going to clean up and pay the bill. They told me the bill was taken care of and they would clean up so I could go and be with my mom. I am very appreciative of the kindness that was shown to me and my mom today. On June 30th, my husband took our sons out to dinner. He decided on going to Highway house. We all have been there a bunch of times. Most of the times we've been there food and service has been good. The other times the service and food haven't been up to expectations. Today apparently was one of those times. My husband came home after eating there and explained to me that he will never be going eating there ever again. He told me that he ordered the pot roast with mashed potatoes and gravy. The whole plate of food was cold to top it off he also told me that our boys food was cold as well.
