I've lived in Gilbert for 14 years, and Higley Hot Dog Hut has been a local staple for far longer than I've been around. In a world full of polished, cookie-cutter chain restaurants, this place is a breath of fresh air. The first time I walked through the door, it felt like stepping into a time machine. It took me back to a simpler time when people smiled at each other, knew their neighbors, and gathered around great food and good conversation. Higley Hot Dog Hut isn't trying to be trendy or fancy--it's a genuine piece of the community, and that's exactly why I love it. The hot dogs are absolutely phenomenal, loaded with flavor and made exactly the way a great hot dog should be. Their Italian beef is among the best I've had this side of Chicago. The French fries are always hot, fresh, generously portioned, and seasoned just right. One of my favorite things is that I can still grab an old-fashioned root beer float here. Between the classic menu, friendly atmosphere, and throwback prices, it's a place where you can enjoy a great meal with family and friends without emptying your wallet. Drove by one day and said 'Chicago style hot dogs!!!' So yesterday I finally went in, or was it out? Interesting entrance/exit??... you order partially outside, then walk either A) outside patio B) your car or C) into the dining room? C really confused me when nice gal asked 'eating in dining room?' Huh? Didn't know there was one, but once you get your bearings you'll see what I mean. A cash only place but worth it if you want an old town experience with one of the best hotdog experiences that is true throughout Gilbert's history. This place sells authentic Vienna beef hotdogs and try all the various options. Parking is limited and don't forget to bring cash. The owners are friendly and know their craft. I've heard of this place by so many people. At first I was sort of scared... it looks like it's a closed down trailer home. Dumb, naive me should have realized places like that are always delicious. A "Hole in the wall", respectfully. It's basically a food truck with a more permanent building. It's definitely nothing fancy, but it gets the job done! The staff was very friendly and quick to get my order out. I ordered a variety of hot dogs such as Bagel Dog & Corn Dog, and an order of Chili Cheese Fries. The food was delicious. How many times have I driven past the little hut with the hot dog on top? Well, today was the day to try them out. Overall it was a fairly good experience. It has a small, modest interior with only eight or nine tables. There are also a few tables outside where you can dine. They only take cash. My husband and I could both get hot dogs, drinks and share some fries for $20 which isn't bad these days. I liked everything about my chili cheese dog. It was fresh, served hot and the toppings were generous. My only major gripe was that they robbed us on the fries, not coming close to filling up the bag. A bummer, considering we were sharing. I think we agreed it was worth going back to Higley Hot Dog Hut if we were in the mood for a good Chicago style hot dog though. (We'll just check the fries next time...) read more

Higley Hot Dog Hut is a home grown little hot dog stand with indoor seating and great dogs. Located just west of Higley Rd on Williams Field it is small but has about 8 parking spots for those wanting to dine in. The eatery takes only cash, which is more of a fading novelty these days than an inconvenience. You order on the covered outside stand area, and pay. You can wait for your order and take it to go, or you can walk inside and eat ar one of half a dozen or so tables. The staff seems kind, and small, but they make consistent excellent hot dogs the way you ask for them. I often order the Chicago style dog, which is done right and tastes great. I also like their polish sausage, which sometimes runs out if it is a busy day. Today, I also had a milkshake which is done right- a real handspun shake with ice cream. "It shouldn't be hard to find a good Chicago dog in Gilbert"... to the shrieks of folks from Illinois! After attending the Gilbert Regional Fireworks last night and waiting in line for 45 minutes to get a dog from a food truck, only to be told they were out as we were next in line. I couldn't shake my want, no need for a good dog. I decided to try Higley Hot Dogs out. How in 12 years living around here have I not tried this place? It was easy, quick, inexpensive (cash only) and a darn good snack. My wife and I each got a Chicago dog, shared fries and a large drink for $12. I wouldn't call it game changing or finding ChiDog nirvana but it was fine. Funny enough what I liked the most was the OLD school inside. This place has been here since 83 when Williams Air Force base was the only thing around. The flight patches on the wall were a testimony to its longevity. Higley Hot Dog Hut is pretty good, it's more of a hot dog cart you see on the side of the road or at Home Depot, but with a wider menu. We had the Hot Dog, Corn Dog, Bagel Dog, Brat, Italian Beef Sandwich, and fries. Hot Dogs, Brat, Italian Beef, and Fries were very good. Corn Dog, Bagel Dog were not that impressive. Wife said the corn dog was like a frozen corn dog heated in the microwave, just soft with no crunch. I had the bagel dog, I tried it since it was something different. Serve it up with a side of fries, add cheese and chili, if you like, and wash it down with a Pepsi. Even as a Coke guy, the extra sweetness of Pepsi meshes well with the salty/savory hot dog. Incredibly lean and tender meat with amazing (I'd say even drinkable) authentic jus. The bun was great but, since soggy bread makes me gag, in the future I'll order with the bread on the side. Hot dogs are mid. But on a hot summer's morning if I wake up hankering for a hot dog; you already know I'm rolling up to the Higley hot dog. As far as hot dogs go they're pretty good, but the hours are just for lunch, so if you wanna go there plan around that. All and all I don't think they serve the best food I've ever had, but I enjoy it enough to return if I'm feeling a hot dog. Plenty of menu options to mix it up and feel like you're getting a better experience than Costco (the only other place I can think of at the moment that sells hot dogs). If I lived here, Higley's would be my go-to for Hot Dogs & Polish. Dogs/Polish are so on point I almost thought I was in Chicago. lol This place is a little shack with good Chicago style ambience. Mom and I have been here twice. I had the Polish this time and it was wonderful. Polish had that Snap, veggies=onions, tomatoes (diced not sliced, but NBD), sport peppers, dill pickle spear and as a bonus, little slice of cucumber very fresh tasting. Nice. So if you're in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and stop by. They also serve Italian Beef/sausage, haven't tried it yet, but maybe before I leave.
