It had been a few years since I got a new prescription for progressive lens. My old eye doctor had retired so I looked on Yelp to see who was around. Hilary Chien, OD, had very high ratings on Yelp, and I easily booked an appointment to see her within 4 days or so. During your appointment, she takes her time with you and makes sure to thoroughly answer any questions you have, so that you have full understanding of the process as well as some of the terms that she is using. She doesn't rush the appointment and you know that this is a doctor that genuinely cares about the health of her patients. She doesn't push additional products or services on you either, recommending only what she thinks that you need. The customer service provided by the front desk staff also mirrors the quality of service that Dr. Chiem provides, making the entire end to end experience a pleasure. Previous to Dr. Chiem, I was seeing the eye doctor at my local Costco and have been for almost ten years. He has since moved and I was super nervous about seeing a new doctor. Dr. Chiem made me feel super comfortable and made the appointment go so smoothly! I felt like we connected on a different level. She understood my needs and has the most supporting care! My dad has advanced glaucoma and we made a plan so she can make sure my eye pressure is always taken care of! I also found out I have cataracts, which I was super surprised and appreciate that I found out. She also answered my millions of questions with my complex health history. I definitely recommend Dr. Chiem! She has the latest technology including an Optomap machine that takes really cool pictures of your eye balls! She is not pushy at all on her services and the prices are fair! They also do accept insurance! Just because I was also curious, I paid without insurance and I do have bad eye sight. I paid without insurance $100 for a glasses exam with dilation, $75 for a contacts exam without dilation, and $35 for Optomap (the top of the line camera for the back of your eye). Great prices and amazing service. She is a great doctor and she deserves to have standard prices. Don't hesitate to book an appointment. read more

I don't write many reviews, but I couldn't NOT write a review for Dr Chiem (especially since I was motived to try her service based on other reviews that I'd read). I moved from another optometrist after a succession of less than desirable experiences. Dr Chiem was patient and efficient, answered all my questions (I had *many*), and I felt that she put in *all* the time necessary to ensure that the outcomes were absolutely optimal for me and my needs. I really value also that she is 100% purely patient-focused, and there's no upsell of testing or accessories or other peripherals that seems to guide the interactions of some optometrists. Definitely a happy patient, and the rest of my family will be making appointments with Dr Chiem now too. read more

I've always had pretty good eyesight and never bothered to see an optometrist, but with all the Zoom screen time during COVID I've noticed some eye strain and just wanted to get checked out. Dr. Hilary Chiem OD is really damned good at her job! Her exams are fast and thorough, she's very meticulous and a clear communicator, and she's obviously concerned with patient's eye health although not pushy about getting tests, etc (like she recommended the glaucoma test, and explained why it was a good idea but wasn't super aggressive about it). Also I am REALLY appreciative of the evening and weekend hours. Hello, working people, are we really supposed to take time off work for an eye exam? I have to wonder how many others, like myself, held off writing a negative review, not wanting to ruin Dr. Chiem's perfect rating... I found Dr. Chiem on Yelp and went into my appointment with high expectations. Unfortunately, I left my appointment feeling uneasy and confused. While Dr. Chiem is indeed friendly and knowledgeable as other reviews have mentioned, it is also very apparent that she is making money is her number one priority. I'm sure that working with insurance companies and having your office inside of a large consumer store can be frustrating at times, but I don't personally appreciate being taken advantage of by a health care professional. During my exam, Dr. Chiem asked if I wanted dilation or photos of my eyes. I assumed these were covered with the copay of my exam as I've never been upsold in a doctor's office before. Only after I sat down at the imaging station did she quickly and casually explain that photos were an additional $35 vs dilation $25 on top of my exam copay. A bit thrown off, I agreed to continue with the imaging that she had previously explained was important. In reading my benefits after my exam, I found out that dilation was actually included in my exam copay, and had she explained this truthfully (dilation as $0 vs images as $35), I would have skipped the photos. But the schemey pricing didn't stop there. During my appointment, Dr. Chiem mentioned that I would have 45 days to return for a second appointment if I wanted to be fitted for contacts. Being a newby to glasses and contacts, I assumed these would both be handled in the same eye exam and again felt this was another opportunity to make more money. Dr. Chiem seemed to be in a rush and I wasn't sure if I event wanted contacts so I left the office with only my glasses prescription in tow. A few days later, I emailed Dr. Chiem to ask for a quote for a contact fitting appointment. While my insurance benefits note a standard copay up to $55, she explained that her services were considered "premium" and therefore more expensive. I asked how this initial quote would compare to the cost of an appointment outside of the 45-day window that she had initially mentioned (as I wasn't sure I wanted contacts and didn't want to rush into an appointment) and she REFUSED TO PROVIDE A QUOTE (maybe because the 45-day limit does not actually exist and the price is the same regardless of when I come? Who knows since she literally said that she would not answer my question). Like I said, Dr. Chiem was friendly, and if you are familiar with glasses/contacts and simply need a quick appointment to have your prescription checked, maybe you'd find her pleasant. But if you're unfamiliar with the process and are looking for an optometrist to provide honest recommendations and patient-centered care, I, unfortunately, cannot recommend her. read more

We had our first visit at this office today for my son for an annual vision checkup before in person school starts after a year of distance learning and extensive screen time. We had previously been pediatric patients of doctor offices in San Mateo and San Carlos but unfortunately we had a change in insurance coverage to eyemed and needed someone new that is in network. I was reluctant at first assuming an in store optical at a store like Target would be mediocre. Don't get me wrong I'm a faithful Target lover but was just unsure about them for vision visits. I was surprisingly pleased with the whole process of my entire visit from booking an appointment online, to email reminders, phone call confirming insurance coverage issues (the front desk receptionist was really helpful and called me back the next day with insurance confirmation as promised), the dr visit, as well as the optical department lady who was super friendly. There were also many frame choices and they were covid safe making sure any frames we touched were placed in a white bin for sanitizing. The equipment was all electronic with updated machines. I appreciated the doctor educating me about my sons current eye health with a genuine passion in her expertise helping me understand. Her demeanor and approach with my son was amazing. We've been to the eye doctor since my son was a Kinder and now he's going into Middle School so we know the drill. I liked the way Dr Chiem had stretched my son to try harder on the vision exam. She would say things like "I know this one might be stretching it but can you see this line?" I appreciate how she tried to challenge my son and push him a little bit more to get an accurate reading rather than rush through it. I would highly recommend this office to anyone! read more

Wow I feel so lucky to have met Dr Chiem! I didn't know she has such great reviews and she totally deserved the good ratings! I have seen two optometrists and one ophthalmologist before Dr Chiem, none of them really took time to see me I felt so rushed and I left the office puzzled and confused. Good place. Deserve the good reviews.Will come back as long as I am in the Bay Area. Even though initially I have to choose Target because my insurance chosen. But I don't regret. Actually this is a great place, and a great doctor. Everything is good. PS: Target's reservation system is confusing, even though it shows doctor's home page and time slots. But these time slots MAY NOT be Dr. Chiem. Interesting isn't it? Also I feel not that comfortable with this Target Optical. Target Optical employees simply don't care and aren't friendly sometimes. They cares their own conversations. BUT good thing is, Dr. Chiem works completely independent, she just rents the place in Target. My eye still diluted and can't see well. Hilary is literally the best OD I've ever had. It's very easy for medical professionals to ignore claims because the internet has helped create a world of hypochondriacs, but I came in with a potential diagnosis from a previous optometrist and she took it seriously, explained to me what it was, dilated my eyes to see if it was truly the case, and even though my previous OD was wrong, she told me we can check again next year just in case. Likewise since I work at a computer heavy company, I was even given tips to keep my eyes healthy! I felt as if every step was fully explained to me in a laymen's terms. She didn't use terminology that was uncommon outside of the medical world, and after my exam I didn't feel pressured to make a purchase. The exam was extremely inexpensive in comparison to other locations, and the staff she has were as kind and informative as she is! If you're on the fence between ODs, just go with Hilary. I would give Dr. Chiem 7 stars if I could. Perfect. Look no further. I scheduled an eye exam for my sister, who is in her 40's and suffers from a severe traumatic brain injury as a result of a car crash she was involved in when she was 17. My sister is a challenging patient due to cognitive difficulties and severe constant tremor (although she is pleasant and cooperative). Dr. Chiem treated her like royalty. She struck a perfect balance between encouraging, respectful, considerate, and professional. She took the time to test my sister patiently and thoroughly, answered all of our (many) questions, and made recommendations regarding which types of glasses to purchase, regardless of where we would purchase them. All this would be enough for me to recommend Dr. Chiem to anyone. The fact that an eye exam with her cost significantly less than literally any other optometrist I called ($60) makes the choice obvious. Go see Dr. Chiem. read more

It was my first time at Target Optical and I didn't have any high expectations. Instead, it was a wonderful experience that I will recommend to anyone. I can't get over how reasonably priced they are, especially because I don't have vision insurance. Dr. Chiem is so nice and she did a terrific job with my contact lens refill appointment. Told me I was her favorite patient of the day because I'm doing the things she advocates like wearing Daily contacts to prevent so many problems, wearing sunglasses outdoors full time and keeping the oil glands around your eyes unclogged with daily maintenance. I can't say enough nice things about the rest of staff. They were very kind.Fixed my current glasses that had gotten wonky and helped me order new contacts that were competitive with online ordering. I found out about Target Optical when I was living in Foster City, I have then moved to San Jose due to my new job but I still drive all the way to San Mateo just to see Dr. Chiem. She is the best OD I have ever seen and is very accommodating, she gives you great recommendations and gives her patients the time of day to explain their health of their eyes and finding the right prescription that is not too strong. Dr. Chiem proved herself to be as good as the reviews promised. She has earned my respect and all 5 stars. She reached out to me by phone in less than an hour after I posted my initial review about my very negative experience at her office. On the phone, she was super apologetic and sincere, expressing her surprise at how things were handled and feeling terribly sorry. She explained that she has been trying to get the Target online system to reflect the appropriate doctor's name, but the technical side of working in Target's system is beyond her immediate control and has been slow and difficult to change. She was surprised to hear about my experience with Dr. Steenbergen, whom she screened herself. Dr. Chiem offered to redo my entire exam at no additional charge. She even went as far as to refund me the contacts fitting fee and still redo a contacts fitting for me. I was amazed at her quick response and greatly appreciated her sensible nature in remedying the situation. She followed through with everything she promised over the phone. I completed my eye exam with her today during which she answered all my questions in the most patient and reassuring manner. I'm a patient that likes to thoroughly understand the what and the why instead of just being told what to do, and Dr. Chiem patiently answered even the most detailed questions regarding my contacts brand and prescription. She does her best to help you find what's right for you, and after my experience today, I feel confident to trust her with my eye health. My wife and I were looking to get our eyes checkup since we moved. We go to Target all the time and find it convenient so decided to setup an appointment. First there were no waiting (most optometrist make us wait). We were also surprisingly by the friendly greet with Hilary, she is very kind and knowledgeable. Testing was done quickly with the state of the art devices and she provide all the details about the examination. We ends up getting glasses for both my wife and I and couldn't be happier.
