Stopped in here on a whim. Ok, a Google search results whim, and boy howdy, was I not sad to do that. Anyone who wears glasses understands the constant need for cleaning, and I was well overdue. I thought I had brought cleaning cloths with me, but alas, in my packing haste, I left them behind. With my vision impaired by what I could only imagine was the grease from seventeen deep fat fat fryers, I decided enough was enough. The staff here are fantastic. I got my wipes, some cleaner for less than the price of a Starbucks coffee, which, on the face of it, probably doesn't sound cheap at all, but I'm talking a tall, not a grande or a venti. Capiche? They even cleaned them for me! Which, although embarrassing, saved me from the shame of knowing just how many layers of filth were on them. Not to be outdone, they even provided me with some solid restaurant recommendations, seeing as I was new to the area. Kinda hoping my glasses don't break, but if they do, I'll head back here in a hot second. TLDR; Awesome staff. Cleaned my glasses for me. Great value. Bonus food recommendations. 10/10. I have been a customer (for life) of Dr. Kim's since the early 2000's. We no longer work near her but still make the drive down from the city to get our annual checkups because she is that great. She is kind, thoughtful, and is very thorough and professional in everything she does. Her office is immaculate and you feel very safe. When my wife needed a new optometrist way back when she went to Dr. Kim and also never looked back. We get all of our glasses and contacts from her and couldn't recommend her enough. She even found a defect in my eye almost 20 years ago which she checked yearly through dilation. Fast forward 10+ years and she said it was time to go see an ophthalmologist. Turned out I had early age/onset glaucoma. If it wasn't for Dr. Kim's diligence who knows how long it may have gone undetected and for that I am eternally grateful. read more

I'm considered a "hard to fit" contact lens patient, because I've had LASIK / PRK, but still need glasses or contacts to correct the residual refractive error. While my eye exam and glasses prescription went well here, Dr. Kim had erroneously diagnosed me as, essentially, not able to obtain clear, crisp vision with any prescription or brand of contact lenses, which turned out to be completely wrong. This extremely disappointing, yet false diagnoses, caused me a lot of grief, as well as time and resources to obtain second and third opinions. Your mileage may vary if you're a straight-forward glasses/contacts case, but if you have atypical needs, I suggest you seek other optometrists that may be more knowledgeable in that area. For the straight-forward cases: The positive is that the eye exam and glasses / contacts prescription process was quite thorough, Dr. Kim was meticulous and really took her time, and she got my glasses prescription just right. The front desk person (Allie) was extremely friendly and knowledgable, and it's normally quick and easy to get an appointment. On the downside, their glasses selection was very limited, and nearly every single pair they had in stock exceeded the VSP benefit amount, meaning that you have to pay an overage out-of-pocket. It may be cheaper just to buy a pair of glasses elsewhere or online, rather than choosing from the available pairs in the shop. Further, they don't seem to be able to order glasses for you; I say this because my insurance also includes a pair of computer glasses, and I was told that they don't have any in stock, which ended the conversation. Other optometrist places would tell me that they can order computer glasses for me if they don't have them in stock. For my "hard-to-fit" case: Dr. Kim had me try on contact lenses of varying brands and curvatures ranging from +1.00 to +2.00, and ended up prescribing me a +1.50, after 2 visits. I let her know that my vision was pretty unclear with this prescription, even though I could see perfectly clear with glasses. She told me that because of my cornea shape post-LASIK / PRK, because of the fact that contact lenses sit right on top of the eye, and that I have some minor astigmatism, I would not be able to achieve that perfectly clear and crisp vision as I do with glasses. This was extremely disappointing because I could not see 20/20 with the +1.50 contact lens prescription she had given me (I was maybe seeing a blurry 20/40 at best), and I was in despair because having to wear glasses during all waking hours was uncomfortable and annoying. I ended up getting another opinion from an optometrist at Stanford, who, on his first try, lowered my contact lens prescription to a mere +0.50. He said a prescription of +1.50, as Dr. Kim had ordered, was a drastic over-correction. I am now seeing a very clear 20/20 with this new prescription, thanks to this Stanford optometrist. I believe Dr. Kim did not have the proper knowledge to correctly prescribe contact lenses for hard-to-fit, post-LASIK/PRK folks like myself. Her conclusion that I just won't be able to see clearly with any contact lens was devastating and turned out to be just plain wrong. For this reason, I cannot recommend Dr. Kim. read more

I now actually wear the glasses she prescribed because I can see out of them and not have a headache 10 minutes later like I did with the prescriptions from the chain optometrists. Belmont Optique's Saturday hours were a godsend for my Mom, when the lens popped out of her glasses one afternoon. Her assistant fixed Mom's glasses in just minutes, and my Mom was so impressed, that now she'll only go to Dr. Kim too! read more

Yes, it is as good as it gets when it comes to optometry. It pains me when my company changes insurance and I reluctantly find a new doctor, but always return to Dr. Kim. Her attention and very through process is incomparable to Kaiser for sure (my experience) and a few other doctors I have tried out. I also specifically like options in glasses as if you have a round face THIS shop carries an option for you not many do. I have been needing to get eye exams and glasses for 27 years so I have been through many offices and this by far is my fave go to. It is such a favorite I do not use my insurance because my eye care is much more important than my insurance telling me this is not an IN NETWORK Dr. So as a summary do I recommend Dr. Kim HECK YES! She took full responsibility for everything and was genuine in her apology, despite it not really being her fault that information was not relayed to her properly. Compared to LensCrafters and stuff, Dr. Kim and her staff are super friendly and they are there to help you, not just to make a profit out of you. Dr. Kim and her assistant, Natalie, are top notch. They are extremely competent, professional, and patient. I am very picky about my eyeglass prescriptions and Dr. Kim worked with me quite a bit to get two prescriptions (computer and distance) just right. The selection of frames isn't overwhelmingly huge, but it's not tiny either, and the stuff they have on hand is tasteful. The shop is laid out nicely. The only complaint I had about my experience was that the VSP lab that Dr. Kim used to grind my lenses was a bit annoying. One of the lenses they sent to Dr. Kim was scratched (which she immediately returned, but it caused a delay). They ran out of high index lenses for another pair, which caused another delay. But, Dr. Kim did a fantastic job trying to compensate (in one case, having temporary glasses made for me while I waited for the real pair!). And the lenses that came out in the end were very nice. read more

I got my first pair of glasses from her and she let me walk outside to test out my sight and everything. I live right by her office so it is so convenient for me! I highly recommend her. For one of my exams, I had to use another doctor because I switched insurance and they didn't take my new insurance. Belmont Optique has a good selection of frames in many styles. I've purchased my specs there for several years, but had my eye exams done elsewhere. This year I switched to Dr. Kim for eye exams. Dr. Kim's exam was thorough, quick, and very accurate. My new glasses are great, and she even gave me tips on how to maximize my prescription for all distances. Both she and her staff are more than happy to help you to choose your frames, and will give you honest feedback about which frames add or detract from your appearance, or how certain frames will help you achieve a certain look. Since Belmont Optique is located at the intersection of El Camino and Ralston, across from the CalTrain station, it also gets my "accessible by public transportation" vote. I personally did not particularly find the provider particularly engaging, but she was polite enough in my limited interaction with her. I got a bit of a paternalistic/ controlling /surly vibe from her which is a pet peeve of mine with medical providers, but YMMV. Office atmosphere was a little sober for my taste. We've been buying glasses from this place for several years but recently the service has been lacking. The biggest issue is the assistant that works there - she really doesn't know what she's doing. Dr. Kim is great but she's busy with patients and you have to wait for her if you want her to assist you with the selection of glasses. They could work on getting more high end sunglasses as well. Overall a good place but the hassle with the assistant may not be worth the time if there are other options. read more

After my husband spoke highly of Dr. Kim's office, I went in last month for my annual exam and was delighted. The place was nicely set up, she had a very welcoming and courteous assistant, and I was taken to the exam room in a very timely manner. Dr. Kim explained everything to me and I liked her professionalism. Since moving to the Bay Area I've struggled to find an optometrist who isn't too pushy and is patient with my eye needs (my last optometrist seemed really bothered that none of his contact trials were working for me and he charged an awful lot for my "fitting"). Just walked in here to browse frames, and was pleasantly surprised by Dr. Kim's help. She asked me what type of frame I was looking for, and then pulled out several stylish options, opened up all the cabinets, and encouraged me to look on my own as well. She wasn't pushy at all, and gave me an honest critique of how each set looked on my face. She was really nice and super helpful, and they have a great selection of frames that are reasonably priced. I found something perfect within a couple of minutes, and she quickly got me processed and her assistant handled all the paperwork for my insurance (VSP). My wife (now also a patient) and I have been extremely pleased with the friendly and excellent professional service provided by Dr. Kim and her assistant, Natalie. Recently, a pair of frames I got from Dr. Kim a few years ago broke, due to a manufacturing defect. When Dr. Kim heard about it, she called me and had already arranged with the manufacturer to send new frames.
