These people are the literal personification of the word s(hmu(ks! As a parent, many people know that our time is beyond valuable. Their offices are of the belief it is ok to waste your time. We had been attempting to set up an appointment for awhile, and had trouble having them get back to us. When we reached out, it turns out that they were ignoring our file because they thought we were poor; I guess they do not want to deal with poor people. That in itself is wild, as people of all socioeconomic classes need medical assistance for their children. The office manager kept repeating that they won't accept clients who need to pay out of pocket, which is also weird on multiple fronts. One, since when is cash not good enough? It seemed to be good enough to maintain a lifestyle with multiple homes that have easy ocean access. But, money holds no value to Peninsula Eye Physicians. I guess they prefer pixie dust and unicorn fecal discharge?! It is also weird though, because we have very solid insurance that covers these services. The office manager said they were checking on our insurance, and was insistent that we did not have insurance. However, he never even bothered to ask for our insurance number. Again, just snidely making remarks about abilities to pay. Frankly, after dealing with such lack of professionalism, we decided it was best to find someone else.... but not before letting our friends on yelp know to stay away! read more

Do not book an appointment with Peninsula Eye Physicians!! I scheduled eye exams for my two older kids at Peninsula Eye Physicians after our ophthalmologist retired. I booked back to back appointments (10:00 am and 10:15 am) so they could be seen at the same time. An hour later, I received a call asking to move the appointments to 9:30 and 10:00 am instead - not ideal, but I agreed. Then, on the morning of the appointment, I received a call at 8:30 am - just an hour before - informing me that the appointment had to be canceled and rescheduled because one of their optometrists had called in sick and the doctor seeing my kids needed to cover. This felt like an internal staffing issue, not something patients should be penalized for, especially with such short notice. Had I been notified even 24 hours in advance, I could've made alternative arrangements, especially since my parents were taking the kids. The way this was handled was extremely unprofessional, and unfortunately, this office has now lost two patients!!!! read more

I went to PEI to get a new prescription because I couldn't see well with my existing glasses. I found that my problem was cataracts in both eyes and a new glasses prescription wouldn't improve my vision. So I met with Dr. Drinnenen who explained everything about cataracts and the corrective options available for my eyes. I opted to go with the procedures in both eyes and am extremely happy I did. I no longer deal with astigmatism and nearsightednes. My vision is 20/20 in both eyes and I'm able to read books and street signs for the first time in years. All of the staff were truly helpful, pleasant and efficient. I can't sing enough praises for the clinic. What a great way to start the New Year! read more

I switched my kids' eye physicians to Penisula Eye Physicians a few years ago. The transition is seamless as they will reach out to the previous provider to get the history on record. Edit: After posting this, I finally did get a call from the office manager. He took full responsibility for the experience and assured me that they were taking steps to address these issues as I was not the only patient to express concerns. He was very patient and understanding, so I will bump my review up by a star for that reason. However, I recommend you call and ask what changes they've implemented before making an appointment. -- If you care about COVID-19 safety measures being in place when you go to a doctor, AVOID this office. I had an appointment with Dr. Tai last Monday, and while I had no complaints about my visit with her, the rest of the experience was not a positive one. I've gone to two other doctor offices recently and they had limited appointments so that only one patient would be in the waiting room at a time. That was not the case here. While waiting to check in, there were 6 other patients and 5 staff members in the open waiting/office area. That's 12 people including myself. One patient and one of the optical staff members had their masks below their noses. And worse, one of the staff/nurses sitting at a desk had her mask completely below her mouth. I'm was getting really uncomfortable as I was waiting for the check in person to get off the phone. Finally someone comes over to help me and I express all of these concerns. They basically do nothing and then check me in and tell me to have a seat. I go wait in the hall because there is nowhere to sit and stay 6' apart from other people due to overcrowding. I honestly almost left I was so upset. After my appointment, I emailed and left a voicemail with the manager to them him know my concerns, but despite asking for a response to confirm they had received my feedback, I never heard back. Again, if you care about good COVID-19 safety practices, go somewhere else. read more

The people are extra friendly and aware that we, the customers, have other things to do with our time than sit in an office waiting. On my first call to the group, the message said that due to staff shortages the wait times might be longer than normal but then someone picked up immediately. Another group I called put me on hold for 10 minutes and never came back. Had somewhat of an emergency situation and they fit me in in an unscheduled visit so I could be seen immediately. That was awesome and the findings were important to determining a probably cause. Every person I met was warm. Dr Koo was thoughtful and caring and explained next steps and went out of her way to try to understand some possible pre-existing conditions. Loved Dr. Ornitz and her team for my 1-year-old's eye exam visit!! Getting your eyes dilated as an adult can seem a bit daunting but having your 1-year-old get dilated.... I was so nervous going in to the appointment and all my nerves were reassured with this stellar staff. They CLEARLY know a pediatric audience- they had props and their staff were on hand to distract/engage/get him to look where he needed to... I was SO impressed!! My lil' guy was a champ and it was THANKS to this TEAM of experts! I had a terrible experience with my daughters eye exam. Her first vision check for glasses-I was recommended to see dr huang. My daughter's (9year old) power was -1.75. Which is super high for a start. Dr giant did not consider her for high myopia and called us for 6 Monrh follow up. During this time my daughters vision went up 3 more points. While prescription for atropine was given. Next follle up to see vision advancement was not kept a close 3 Months. It was still kept at 6 Months. Very dissatisfied with the experience here. read more

I read through some of the reviews giving lower ratings, but it wasn't about the in office experience- it was about not being able to get an appointment. It's probably because Dr Ornitz and her team are "just THAT GOOD!" Her 10,000 + hours of experience makes her the Malcom Gladwell case study for bomb dot com Pediatric Ophthalmologists. She has an amazing way of connecting with her patients, especially young ones that are squirmy and nervous. Her goal is overall eye/vision wellness. She isn't incentivized to get you into a pair of glasses. She is focused on getting your vision and eyes healthy. What is GEM! There are kid friendly snacks and Disney movies playing in the waiting area. To help entertain the impatient patients =) Her assistant was sooooo friendly. I am apologetic that I cannot recall her name, but she was fantastic. She was friendly, sweet and paid attention to every detail. What a great addition to this wonderful team of pros. I have been a patient of PEP with VSP insurance for many years. The majority of patients posting positive reviews are older mostly addressing the DOCTORS' care with no attention to the office support staff. My intent here is to warn others by sharing my personal experience with the administrative staff over the years. 'Office Manager', Oliver, comments on some reviews, so am giving fair warning to think twice before responding about some staff complaining over my speaking out over the constant difficulties I have had dealing with them. Oliver should remember that I was always open and honest and contacted him most every time these problems occurred. The primary reason I continued with Peninsula Eye Physicians for so long is because of optometrist Dr. Kwan and the convenient location of their offices to my home. Looking over my records, most issues have involved interpretation of my VSP High Option benefits and how to apply them, along with the amount to charge - this has caused much frustration, resulting in my loss of patience with the admin support staff at PEP. In fact, I am considering following up with a complaint to VSP Corporate since they had to get involved at times over the years to resolve mistakes made by PEP admin staff. As a retired civil servant I get an annual 'Benefit Plan' with strict orders to follow - this means we are NOT to use anything but the plan we get directly in the mail. I believe in some cases the mistakes made by PEP were because they either do not have or use the official plan we are given and I did offer a copy to their insurance rep at the time. A recent example of my experiences was last year in 2021 when I used my benefit towards getting new eyeglass lens through PEP and frames through Costco. In going back and forth between VSP's statements of benefits and what was actually billed as shown on PEC's statements, it is next to impossible to do a clear accounting "crosswalk" in order to reconcile the two. Bottom line, when VSP reviewed and tried to reconcile the differences between what PEC optical department employee Janira charged and what they came up with, it could not be done (or at least I was never given the information). What they did is take the easy way out by reimbursing me the amount I had been charged for all the trouble it caused. Another the nightmare experience I had was trying to determine if it was time to do cataract surgery since my opthalmologist had told me over a year ago that I met the criteria, but it was still not severe. In trying to make an appointment to see Dr. Vinca for an update, another admin person with the title of 'surgical coordinator' immediately took over! She went ahead and scheduled the surgery and sent a detailed schedule including requirements to get an EKG and 2 blood tests. She said these tests could only be done within a short time period before the surgery and to request my internist to order the tests. I am disabled and my internist is located in another city, so I requested to get them at the hospital close to my home. This led an "administrative competition" with my internist staff who wanted me to come to his location for the test, so we agreed that I would go to the hospital by my home for the tests and then my doctor would read the results on-line and follow up with a video call. The surgical coordinator FINALLY set up an exam with Dr. Vinca at my insistence since I wanted to get an update on the progress of my cataracts (it had been over a year since my eyes had been dilated/examined). I was stunned to learn that the coordinator had MISSED the fact that it had been over a year, thinking it had only been a few months! On arrival, there was a line out the door with many frustrated and confused people standing/sitting all over the lobby. I was in severe pain and stood in it as long as I could until my appointment time passed. Finally, I went ahead to the desk and stated my concern about being late. When I finally got in to see Dr. Vinca, she dilated my eyes and told me that they are about the same as over a year ago, I made the decision to cancel all the appointments that the surgery coordinator had made - What a waste of time, effort and money and a perfect example of what is wrong with our medical "system" in this country! Bottom line, it is evident what this is really all about is an office that is "managed" and run by "bean counters" and admin support staff. NOTE: I always had good support and got along with the actual doctors over the years. Oliver's decision to refuse me as a patient is based on his weakness as a manager and taking the easy way out. ANY professional manager working in client service should place their CLIENTS over and above protecting their staff. His attempt to place entire blame of this on me may be challenged by California and/or Federal consumer protection rights and regulations. read more

My two boys (currently ages 12 and 9) have been seeing Dr. Ornitz at this ophthalmology practice going on more than three years. Both of them were unlucky to have a dad with severe nearsightedness and astigmatism but Dr. Ornitz and her staff made the process of addressing my questions and concerns quite easy and I couldn't have asked for a better eye care doctor for them. Dr. Ornitz is very knowledgeable and a top notch pediatric ophthalmologist. Also a big kudos to the optical office that is affiliated with this practice. A remaining phone call was made to the old number; since that number was no longer ours we did not make the appointment, yet we are still being charged for appointment cancellation even after we contacted them and tried to explain the reason and also confirmed that they in fact had the new updated phone number. The rep advised me that no appointments were available until September, and that in addition to my vision coverage (VSP) they need to charge my medical insurance as well, or pay out of pocket $175. Ideally, that is not my preference to pay out of pocket, but I would if necessary. The tone on the rep was rude and a bit insulting. No, thank you. There are other options elsewhere. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Koo for many years and feel confident with her expertise. I've had my eye surgeries by Dr. Vinca. There were some challenges with my first procedure and she helped to ensure my second procedure went more smoothly. I greatly appreciated her empathy, compassion, and expertise in ensuring my surgeries were successful especially given that my procedures were not routine ones. I also appreciated the office staff fitting in my surgeries despite the added challenges with the pandemic. Both Dr. Koo and Dr. Vinca as well as Dr. Tai are all very approachable, caring, and knowledgeable. Prior to the pandemic, the office wait could sometimes be substantial. During the pandemic, the scheduling was much better. Overall, the doctors at Peninsula Eye Physicians are outstanding and I highly recommend them. read more

I'd almost given up on this place because I really disliked my doctor there, thought the staff and ODs are always great. I finally switched to Dr. Vinca after seeing her for an emergency. Dr. Vinca's great! Listened to my symptoms, talked about treatment options and asked what my preferences were, pretty much the opposite of my previous experience. I didn't feel rushed at all, and she let me know I can give her a call if I want to try something else. Really good experience. I recently had very bad and painful eye infection and it still felt a bit "off" after it had healed up. I'm new to the area and made an appointment here just to make sure everything was ok since I was still in a bit of discomfort and it would get VERY bloodshot with just a bit of strain to the point it would freak people out. The charge for them looking at my eye and saying nothing was wrong + dilating the pupil (because I was surprised they thought nothing was wrong... so they kind of just did that to shut me up) was $230. I had a full eye exam a few months prior, this was not nearly as thorough... if you are going to charge a high fee for a basic exam, at least do it as well as the people at Sears. I realize MD's cost more (I had to see them plenty of times during my infection, no visit cost as much as this one though.....) but I find that amount ridiculous given how quickly I felt blown in and out of there. A month later and I was still having problems with the eye getting really red + discomfort, I went to another doc and was looked at for HALF that amount and prescribed some drops that cleared up my issue right away ! I've been a patient here for awhile and I've always liked all of the doctors I've seen, but a few days ago, one of the doctors went out of his way to help me and I have to share the story. Earlier this week, I ran into Dr. Kwan as he was leaving to go home. (It was around 5:30 p.m.) I had seen him earlier that day and I told him I was concerned about my prescription not being correct. I assumed he would tell me to make another appointment (which would be a perfectly reasonable suggestion), but he didn't. Even though he was about to get on the elevator to go home, he offered to go back to the office to quickly check my eyes again. Of course, I was wrong and he had given me the correct prescription, but I really appreciated him coming back to the office once he had left to check my eyes in order to put my mind at ease. He didn't have to do that and it really showed that he cares about his patients. Thank you Dr. Kwan! Also, if you are looking for new glasses, I highly recommend this place. Save your time and go somewhere else. When I first arrived at the clinic I showed the front desk lady my insurance card and I was told that I am not in their system, nothing else. I offered to call my insurance company and asked how much would be my copay, but she said it is fine and copay should be $10-$20. Don't get me wrong, she was nice but she failed to inform me that if I do not have VSP I would need to pay out of pocket $175 or $75 copay if they will have to charge my medical insurance instead. Cause I would walk out the door and find other places. I trusted them so I went ahead to get my annual checkup done. Now I am ending up dealing with all the hassles and paying for the bill that I was not informed. It is really unprofessional and the tone on the rep from the billing dept was rude. I have never had a bad experience here. My doctor is Sandra Cheng and she is very nice and explains what she's doing during my eye exam - something which I really value. I have found them to be very accommodating during appointments, especially when it comes to dilating my eyes. There have been a few times when I haven't had time to do the full dilation and they have been accommodating and allowed me to do the dilation at my next exam instead. In terms of what vision plans they accept, I know only that they do accept VSP as that's what I have. The office staff were very patient and friendly - even when I left my checkbook in the car and had to run down to get it before paying! Dr. Cheng is really great and I would recommend her to anybody. read more

The doctor my daughter visited is well qualified and nice to meet. 2 stars is for the billing Dept. I waited for a clarification on the confusing bill and forgot to pay on time. When I called to pay and wonder if they can waive the late fee, I had to listen to 30 seconds long lecture from billing. I should have say "Please go ahead and charge me the late fee so I don't have to suffer from your complaint." To billing Dept- if you can't waive the late fee, it is fine. Don't vent it on your customer!!!!! read more
