My wife's surgery was cancelled because the office claimed our insurance was not active "on time." In reality, our COBRA payment had already been made 10 days before the surgery and Blue Cross/Blue Shield was able to perform an urgent manual eligibility override, confirming that the plan was active. The issue was not that we were uninsured -- the issue was that the office relied only on the initial system status and did not know how, or did not try, to handle the COBRA eligibility situation properly before cancelling the surgery. This created unnecessary stress for our family at the worst possible moment. A surgery should not be cancelled because the administrative staff cannot navigate a temporary COBRA processing delay, especially when the insurance company was able to resolve it quickly once contacted correctly.

I felt that had been tricked by the paper they give me to sign then later on told me it's not nesscery to have vision examination when have medical eye check up done but they didn't explain to me at the beginning and I told them it's medical eye check up appointment only why they had me to sign the paper to do something else unnecessary after I already had vision examination prior this visit from another eye doctor who recommended me to see special doctor for medcial reason eye check up. These staffs had knowlege and manipulating to misleading the new patient to sign the paper of the service that not necessary then charge for that and I had been told if I want to despute this charge, have to go to the Doctor. Horrible experience from these unprofessional staff and office manager in this office.

His group practice is busy-either a good sign (lots of satisfied patients) or bad (lots of patients indifferent to the care they receive). Fortunately it's the former. My first visit seemed thorough, tests were performed, eyes dilated, another exam to confirm what had been diagnosed, which is good, they didn't just accept what they were told. Dr. Drinnan explained what he found, he even used my phone to take a video of what he saw as evidence for the need for surgery-in my case the lens had yellowed and also was causing an incorrectable vision. Very cool to see the reason why. I also could correct my astigmatism in the replacement lens, and he explained the pros and cons. Dr. Drinnan gave me new knowledge of the eye-structure, lens replacement, how yellowing gave things a yellow tinge and surgery meant things may become brighter and colors truer. He was reassuring to say I'm a routine case with a high chance of success, assuming everything would go OK being that I've never had any surgery ever. On the day of the first surgery it went as smoothly as his staff described. Treatment took 30 minutes of a two-hour appointment. In the recovery room, what I could see through the protective eye shield was clarity for the first time in 40+ years without glasses. Dr. Drinnan provides drops to take 3 days before surgery and I continued them 3x/day for two weeks-followed pre-and post op instructions to the letter. What's a little inconvenience for a lifetime of clear vision? A few days after surgery, I noticed how a new lens made a huge difference-colors were true instead of a yellowing hue, lights were brighter as a result, and vision out of that eye was now 20/20 the next day. Went back a week later, and second eye was done, same results, 20/20 for both eyes the next day. I should caution that the correcting lenses put in are an additional cost toMedicare, plus copay, but that was explained by Dr. Drinnan and Staff. If one can rave about an ophthalmologist Dr. Drinnan would be my choice. Thoroughly professional, compassionate and skilled treatment, he even personally called me the evening after surgeries to make sure I was doing ok and to answer any questions. He and his Staff do a great job preparing for the procedure both medically and financially. Thanks, Dr. Drinnan I would highly recommend you, from one health professional to another!

Following my eye exam with Dr. Nguyen on May 6, I received a new prescription and purchased a pair…read moreof glasses. Unfortunately, the glasses did not improve my vision, so I returned them and ordered another pair. After trying those glasses for a couple of months with no noticeable improvement, I scheduled another appointment--this time with Dr. Filer--on July 15. During that visit, Dr. Filer confirmed that a stronger prescription could be written, but also noted that due to the cataracts in my eyes, a stronger prescription likely wouldn't help. He did not recommend surgery at that point, as the cataracts were not severe. I continued wearing the glasses from June in the meantime. Still struggling with my vision, I later purchased a pair of reading glasses using the same prescription, hoping it would help. That pair also failed to improve my vision. Out of continued concern, I sought a second opinion on September 15. After a thorough exam, the new doctor confirmed that my cataracts were not yet serious enough to warrant surgery. When I showed her the prescription I had received from Dr. Filer's office, she expressed disbelief and stated that it was essentially reversed compared to her findings--including the astigmatism correction. I used her corrected prescription to order a new pair of glasses, which finally provided the clear vision I had been seeking. I'm sharing this experience not only to express my frustration and disappointment but also in the hope that it might help prevent a similar experience for others. Note: When I requested Dr. Filer reimburse me for the glasses I had purchased using the 'wrong' prescription, I was met with silence.

This is very unprofessional, and not acceptable to me. We're not talking about a simple procedure that can heal in a week. We're talking about my eyesight. I assume she either has too big of a patient load now that she has taken over for the retired physician or simply fills her schedule without regard for your time.

This is probably an unfair review, or maybe it isn't...you decide…read more My husband and I came here through word-of-mouth from my husband's coworkers who have the same eye care insurance. Booking the appointment was fine. Minor point, they don't run like clockwork, even though the name is "eyework". It says eye not clock. You should check their lunch hour and decide if you want to be standing in the cold or not while waiting for their lunch over to end. What is cold anyway in the Bay Area? This isn't Colorado. In Colorado, they would open the doors earlier to let people in from the snow. Doctor was fine. My vision went from -8 to -10 in two years. I'm thinking I may need to start learning braille. (Spoilers, no I didn't go get a second opinion.) We picked out frames. I am mightily blessed with a wide face and a flat nose, as in I don't have strong nose bridge. The workers reassured me that lots of customers have my style of face. Great. I picked out a pair by Oliver People and paid $800-1000 for my frames. This is San Mateo, right? People love chucking money at the sky. For me, it's because it was one of two pairs designed for women* they had available that would fit my face. Did I choose the more expensive pair? Sure I did, because I thought it would be more comfortable and I liked the color. This is the worst pair of eyeglasses I have ever owned. And by this point, I've owned probably 25-30 pairs of eyeglasses. The titanium is nice and light, so yes, it is more comfortable; I don't have any pain at the temple or behind the ear lobe. But that's because the glasses is touching my skull in 4 spots - the two nose pads and two tiny spots somewhere on my ear. The frames aren't touching anywhere along my temple. Does this sound great? Maybe, until you realize there ain't nothing holding up this pair glasses. No friction, at all. Stupid, stupid design. I've got bad vision. (I want you to know, I am censoring a lot of curse words to keep this family-friendly). So the lens is heavier. What does this mean? Well, that requires a knowledge of gravity. You don't even need college-level knowledge of gravity. The weight of my lenses pulls the glasses down. If I were to look down at something, say a book, or maybe I'm painting something, maybe I'm tying my shoe. My glasses fall off my face. I was literally in the middle of painting something and I got so frustrated I stopped in the middle to write this review. When I turn my head sideways, and the glasses fall off sideways, the eye pads poke my eyeball. STUPID. And my husband likes to point out, "That's $1000 for you". Also, adjusting the titanium is STUPID. It's "fragile" so they can't actually adjust it (even though the girl who helped me with the frames said they could). The eye pads are adjustable...except here is another STUPID thing. The glasses weren't adjusted when I picked them out. The girl marked the lens which is information used by the company making the lens to match it with my prescription. Well...they adjust the glasses afterwards, so the mark is off now. STUPID. So my vision isn't improved while driving. I've noticed that I have a harder time driving with these new glasses. It's fine though, since I mostly drive in areas I'm familiar with; I don't need to read signs so much. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can see the same with my old pair if not better. And my prescription on that pair is -8. To their credit, they were helpful in doing what they could with the glasses. But there's only so much they can do. So here my main issues 1. The glasses weren't adjusted prior to marking the lens. 2. Likely inexperience with high prescriptions, low nose bridge, wide face, etc. Pros: The staff are friendly, it was easy to book an appointment. Verdict: I'm going to go back to my old doctor, even if it means paying toll and driving 45 minutes one way for an appointment and then again when I pick up my glasses/contacts. *Women glasses: they're as stupid as women's clothing: Overpriced and not functional, or sometimes worse, they give the impression of being functional, but sometimes those pockets or drawstrings are just for show. In the future, I'm going to pick out men's glasses. They're more affordable, no fuss or frills, and they're also wider. But do the people who make this profession think about telling the customer that? Either they don't know...or they want your money. Go ahead San Mateo, throw more money into the sky. That's how you got rich, right? By spending and spending.

Before my cataract surgery, Dr. Drinnan told me that I was going to be thrilled with the results and I would have a new lease on life. Of course he did say "There is a slight chance something could go wrong, but that possibility is so remote that the benefits outweigh the risks." What I could never have anticipated was his reaction when something did go terribly wrong. At my post op appointments, I tried desperately to discuss it with him. He was extremely defensive, accusatory, and utterly dismissive of my symptoms. He accused me of exaggerating, imagining it, being dramatic, being overly sensitive, and he outright denied anything was wrong. He even tried to suggest that the horrific symptoms that appeared immediately following eye surgery must be due to conditions that I DON'T have (like high blood pressure, diabetes, or medications). A full pre-op physical exam, and complete blood work tests are required just prior to the surgery. Mine prove I have normal blood pressure, no health conditions, and take no medicines. I've spent the past year and every last dollar seeking help from numerous ophthalmologists. There is clearly visible and obvious evidence of the surgical damage upon basic examination of my eye. The doctors have referred me around to their colleagues in an attempt to help me, but nothing can be done to fix the surgical injuries. After many months of suffering from the damage to my eye, my other eye developed "sympathetic stress related ocular damage" as well. Apparently, the eyes work together as a unit, so if one has a serious physical injury, the other one gets overly stressed trying to compensate. If you use Dr. Drinnan for your cataract surgery the chances are that he has more successes than failures. But if something goes wrong, do not expect any understanding or medical help with the nightmare that will follow. His concern will be to deny your symptoms in order to defend himself. My vision and thus the quality of my life is damaged beyond repair. There is nothing I can do except live the rest of my life with the life altering visual injuries that he caused to me. read more

I am brand new to this practice! I have not been seen yet so this review is based solely on my first call to the office. I called yesterday afternoon to schedule my first appointment. First off, I was on hold with what seemed to be an extremley LONG time. Someone finally picked up the call but seemed very unsure what I actually needed and was also unsure if they took my insurance. She kept putting me on hold and asked a lot of questions. It ended up that she could not help me so I was given to another very nice person, I think her name was Gena, who was able to answer my questions in 5 seconds! She scheduled my appointment, verified my insurance was a go, verified that I had their address, and also apologized for the long wait time-which is a big plus for me! I am shifting over from Kaiser and got very tired of the long wait times and no one really caring so the fact that this person got on the phone, handled my questions in a timely manner, and apologized, spoke volumes! My appointment is not for awhile due to insurance dates but I am looking forward to being a patient here. My reason for the review to just point out that the phone call is a first impression to the office, and while it is common to wait on hold these days, it can be very frustrating. Hopefully the long hold time is not something that is a ongoing issue with this office and more of a one time thing. read more

My decision to open a Yelp account was based on wanting to review this outstanding office. I'll start by saying this practice is so easy to make an appointment with. Their receptionists are knowledgeable & really care about helping you. I honestly felt like they appreciated my call. During my initial call, I learned this practice has 3 general ophthalmologists & 2 pediatric. Im not sure how many optometrists they have, but I see Dr. Wendy Lin & she is always a delight to see. My twins have seen Dr. Hsu-Dresden for almost 2 yrs. The pediatric nurse (sorry, I forgot her name) is always so happy to see us & is never rushed or bored. I absolutely love Dr. Hsu-Dresden! She is thorough but respects my family's time-I don't HATE going to this office! I really felt like she wanted the best for my kid's health.I also like she is a Harvard graduate. I always tend to feel sort of awkward when calling a medical office. I worry they wont be friendly or competent...Peninsula Eye relives a lot of those sresses. Quality staff & Drs that care are well worth the drive from San Francisco. I also love that I can select glasses & order contact lenses during one visit. read more

I called last week and spoke to someone to ask if they can have my glasses prescription ready for me to pick up sometime during the week. I asked what the office hours were and was told 8:00-5:00. Fast forward to Friday at about 4:40 and no-one was there. There was a gentleman helping another patient in the glasses area but I did not want to interrupt. I am new to this office hence my Yelp review. My suggestion to the office would be to make sure to let your patients know if office hours have change. As other Yelp reviews have mentioned...the customer service is lacking. I will call the office today and see if they can mail my prescription as opposed to another wasted trip. read more

Aarthi Vinca, M.D. is one of the best eye doctors you will ever meet. She specializes in cataract and glaucoma surgery, but it is her bedside manner that separates her from the rest. You are in her presence and you don't even realize how educated she is because she treats you like family. I was referred to her by another practice for surgery. She spent a good amount of time with me to learn about my health and finish off my visit with her explaining the results of my exam. I was out of their office within 30 minutes and on my merry way with prescriptions in hand. I will definitely be seeing them for all of my optometrist needs and bringing my family as well to their practice. Dr. Lee has an amazing attitude and ethics towards her work, first of all, she's very clean, she cleaned each piece of equipment before use, and has an amazing attention to detail, I could tell she tailored the exam to the specifics of my eye (my astigmatism) but she really went above and beyond for me by explaining what each exam was for, the results, and how I could think about it. I really got to learn my own eye from a whole new perspective. She was also not pushy with any of the other services (like the extra exam screening, or glasses, or really anything else). Turns out they did have some samples in my prescription in stock! I'm glad they helped me out this time. S/o to the girls at the front desk! Generally I've had a solid experience when working with folks here (my file was transferred over from another office in the past) but just had an awkward phone call with one of the staff. I asked a few questions I was concerned about and got some answers, asked if they had my prescription in stock (which they didn't, which is fine), but after that it was followed up with awkward silences after asking if there are any options I could explore, to the point that I wasn't sure if they were still on the phone. I heard typing in the background so I wasn't sure if they were looking into it for me, but looking back I think he had mentally moved on from the conversation. I asked to see if someone else could help me -- but was met with "everyone else is busy". He asked for my info, and I asked "will I get a callback regardless or only if there's a solution", and the way he answered seemed like I probably wouldn't get a callback. Like some empathy or "we can't help you, but you can explore these options (samples, boxes or brands they do have in stock, etc)" to provide direction . Idk if Benjamin was just having a bad day, but I felt like a burden and an annoyance for asking questions and didn't really have the empathy nor the time to want to help me problem solve.

The 2nd time around, I decided to point it out, and they had no problem with not charging, but it is the principle and I want to be able to trust my doctor best interest in me (financially as well) vs making a quick dime on these sneaky charges. They charged me extra for a service I never received, and their attitude was consistently very…read moredismissive, rude and unreasonable. The quality of the glasses is poor (while it costs more than $300) -- it already has scratches when I received it (see attached photo), while I have not worn it at all. They made a pair of sunglasses in the wrong color. When I pointed it out, they flatly denied it and insisted the color was correct, effectively treating me as if I were color-blind rather than taking responsibility for their error. I end up have to take the mirror off the glass to receive the correct color. Despite this being entirely their fault, they refused to provide any refund or compensation and continued to respond with an extremely dismissive and unprofessional attitude. Don't come.
