My family and I have lived all over the world and relied on moving services on nearly every continent and I can say, without hyperbole, that Hilldrup was the absolute worst experience we have ever endured. They were truly atrocious from beginning to end. Fundamentally, a moving company has only two objectives: (1) pack someone's stuff so it doesn't break; and, (2) ensure that said stuff makes it from customer's old home to their new home. Hilldrup failed miserably on both counts. First off, they broke a lot of stuff. Like a LOT. In every move we've had stuff break, but nowhere near the amount Hilldrup broke. Crystal glasses, wicker cabinet doors, our son's bicycle, a glass mixing bowl, on and on and on and on.. Second, and most infuriating, is that they somehow lost my son's entire book collection and his beloved baseball card collection. Those boxes simply vanished. The movers packed them up at our home in Virginia, but they did not unpack them at our home in Washington State. How that happens I'll never know, and apparently neither will Hilldrup, because they made no effort whatsoever to locate my son's stuff, which they lost, and they took no responsibility for it. They even had the temerity to deny our claim for some compensation to buy him new books when in fact many of the lost items were irreplaceable and priceless - decades old Russian language books from my wife's childhood, books I bought for him on my travels around Africa, etc. Finally, and perhaps the greatest metaphor for our experience with Hilldrup, is how it all ended. Their semi truck driver, Suni, accidentally left several of his items behind on delivery day. We held onto them and didn't touch them because we are civilized people who actually respect other people's property (unlike whoever at Hilldrup ended up with our stuff), until they washed their hands of us. Knowing they weren't going to help us we open the packages so we could throw them away property and what did we find when we opened the first package? A giant stack of filthy, nasty used sex toys. Yep, we lost my son's childhood memories and got a bag of nasty sex toys in return. Thanks so much, Hilldrup! read more

Hildrup moved us from Virginia to Arizona. We were very concerned about the move because a) we had purchased a new bedroom set and several other things, and b) the move from Arizona to Virginia was very bad (not done by Hilldrup). We had three bids from local and long distance movers. Hilldrup had the best bid since they provided full coverage and there were no increases but there could be a decrease. In the end, what they charged and got paid, we the final bill. They were extremely professional and provided excellent guidelines. We asked for some boxes which they said that they would supply (used ones). They wound up dropping off new boxes, all sizes, wardrobes, tape and paper. WOW. This was about a $500 savings. We packed all of the items and the big day finally arrived. The driver ad the team were professional, respectful and very good. We were the third move onto the truck and they moved in all of the pieces but could not fit in about 12 boxes. The drive put those boxes in his cab. He explained that he could not go cross country with that but they will call us on Monday and let us know what is gong on with these 12 boxes. They said that they would be unloading in Arizona in 6 days. My wife who was driving out planned to be there on Monday, they were supposed to be there on Tuesday. On Monday she received a call stating that they would be arriving around 8AM on Tuesday morning and the remaining 12 boxes would arrive that Friday. They moved everything in and they did a great job. The back office was also pretty wonderful answering questions and making sure that we knew everything about the move. A couple of small things were broken but nothing major.. Let me start off by saying that if I could give Hilldrup Moving 18 stars, I would! This was not our first big move (10+ hours away), and I went into this move with trepidation after having a less than pleasing experience with our last moving company. I felt very disrespected by the last moving company; I felt as though because I was the only one at home dealing with the movers while my husband was at work that they saw me as an easy target to be disrespected because I am a woman in my late twenties. Several of our things were damaged and I had quite a hard time getting the damages remedied. With this move, we also didn't know where exactly we were going. My husband didn't find out until the day he had to leave, so that added an additional layer of complexities and headaches to our planning. I contacted Hilldrup about 8 weeks out from our estimated move date, and from every single person that I had the please of talking to and working with, I was met with nothing but sincerity and a true willingness to help. From the online surveyor, to my move coordinator, to the moving crews in both cities and everyone in between. They made sure all of my questions were answered, they were very transparent and honest with the pricing, consistent in communication and truly genuinely cared to make sure they were doing what they could to take some of my stress from moving away. Moving is never described as a favorite activity of anybody; but, I can honestly say, if we had to face a cross country move once a year, I would do it with such a peace of mind knowing that I had Hilldrup in my corner and taking care of us. I was anxious about selecting movers. I scoured online reviews and none seemed particularly positive. Some friends had used Hilldrup earlier this year and recommended them, so I took the plunge. Hilldrup was wonderful. Mary Katherine explained everything in full detail, as it was our first time hiring movers (and we were moving 1,000 miles away, no less). Their price seemed fair, especially compared to other quotes I got. I felt great about the full value protection coverage provided for my items. Their communication was mostly on point. We absolutely loved the guys that moved all of the belongings, specifically the lead guy Marcus. They worked very hard, and we were inspired to tip more than we had planned. Marcus delivered our items within the promised delivery window. We ended up with four items broken in total. Lucky for me, they were smaller, not sentimental things that can easily be placed. I recently filed the claim, so it's yet to be seen if United will replace/reimburse in full or give me the run around. I'm hoping for the former. All in all, I would use Hilldrup again with the hopes of them repeating the excellent experience provided during a stressful time. I also generally think that you're more likely to have a good experience if you're involved in the move - understanding the quote and what's covered, planning ahead, carefully packing, treating the movers with respect (having a few snacks and bottled water/gatorade goes a long way!), etc. I think a few of the negative experiences documented here could have been avoided with more attention from the client during the entire move process. read more

My wife and I had lived in the same house for 19 years and decided to move when we both retired. We are both collectors and knew we needed help to get from Virginia to North Carolina. We started our search for a mover on line and found many offers from moving companies of various size and location. Fortunately we found the DOT site on moving. (See FMCSA.dot.gov/protectyourmove) A key piece of advice was to be suspicious of any mover that estimates the job over the phone. We contacted Mayflower and they had an estimator from Alpha Moving at our house in a week. Mr. Ball spent an hour or two with us and talked all about moving but put no pressure on us. He gave us a bid by email the same day. After some back and forth on the services we wanted we reached an agreement on price and move date. They honored every part of the agreement. The packers were astounding, courteous, efficient, and pleasant. The loaders were professional and hard working. They were focused on safety and caring for our furniture and buildings. The delivery was on-time and efficient. Alpha even assigned a move coordinator to us who was in touch twice a day to discuss the progress on the move and was available whenever we needed her. Pete, Holly, Emanuel, Duane, and Maria and the other Alpha staff all showed the same level of dedication to quality and safety. We handed Alpha Moving a very difficult job and they pulled it off without a hitch at the price we agreed to. read more

Having used Hilldrup on a previous cross-country move for our daughter's family, we chose them for our recent household move. All aspects of the move went smoothly, from estimate by Pete Ball (very knowledgeable and efficient), to management of the move (the able and attentive and helpful) Maria Piekarski), to the move itself. Our goods were loaded from our home and from a storage space onto a shuttle truck, then reloaded to a cross-country van, transported and delivered to our home in California. One would have expected some glitch in a more complex move such as this one--but aside from a bit of truck repair delay (due to the holiday season) the move was accomplished within a day of the estimated window, which was not overly inconvenient. Maria and the driver kept us informed, and the company even reimbursed us $100 for the 1-day delay. Our movers themselves were pleasant and efficient, going out of their way to assure our satisfaction with the move, and to minimize subsequent effort on our behalf (they moved already unloaded boxes and furniture to realign a carpet that impeded placement of a large piece of furniture). Follow-up (again by Maria) was swift and ongoing, making sure that all went well and that any issues were promptly addressed. I would most certainly use Hilldrup again for any move. read more

I moved from Toronto, Canada to Oviedo, Florida and since I was residing in Toronto in a huge house for 5+ years I had accumulated lot of stuff in my house and the move was planned in November when it starts getting cold in Toronto, so I was very tense and nervous before the move however during the move I was really impressed the way everything was packed and moved by Matthew, a real professional in his work, very patient and extremely good in his behavior. Everything was handled as planned, delivered as planned and to my surprise I noticed that there was about 11 light bulbs that was packed in one of the 40+ boxes and when the stuff was delivered not even a single bulb was broken that was really Awesome. I would recommend United for moving and storage for a very reliable, professional and hassle free move. We moved from Millersville, MD to The Villages, Florida --- and it was, unequivocally, the best experience we've ever had in moving household goods. The Hilldrup team was simply perfection at every level... from packing to loading to unloading to the overall coordination of the entire operation. We had no damage of any kind; in fact, I have never seen a move where there wasn't even a minor ding to the walls or floors or doorways on either end, let alone to the household items. Special recognition goes to Ray and Kevin who flawlessly loaded, transported, and unloaded --- they are an unbelievable team who work exceptionally well together; and also kudos to Maria Piekarski who must be the best move coordinator in the business. Discussion with customer service resulted in no change. They offered the same $300 reimbursement and just suggested that I talk to the police about the possibility that their people lost/stole my belongings. In other words, not their problem. I stand by my original review. Watch their movers, take pictures, and force them to list every single item of any value. When it is time to unpack, make them unpack and check off every single item, and if there is any question, refuse to sign the receipt form. While they will say you can still file a claim, they are lying. Once you sign the form they will deny any responsibility for anything. Do not sign their form. I am extremely disappointed in this entire experience and the huge waste of time that it has been communicating back and forth with no results. read more

Maria and Pete were awesome to work with: professional, informative, and responsive. The crews that we had from the packers to the movers from VA to OH were friendly, efficient, and very careful with our belongings. We moved at the end of March when the pandemic was intense, and we were worried not only about the health of the movers and ourselves, but whether we would be allowed to leave VA and enter OH. Maria, Pete, and our crews were positive, helpful, and safe with us and our household items, especially my husband's hundreds of books and historical memorabilia. We used them for our cross-country move (Kansas City to Charlotte), and they were truly amazing from start to finish!! Request Billy as your driver if you can, he went above and beyond on both move days and communicated thoroughly! They did light packing for us too and i'm mad I didn't just have them do it all because they were SO fast and packed everything so well. They protected the floors and walls on any tricky corners when we moved into our new home so nothing was damaged, none of our items were lost or broken either.
