A truly great hardware store. Friendly, knowledgeable, fair priced (reminds me of the hardware store in the David Wilcox song "East Asheville Hardware"). I use them for everything ... except work. Because the work card is an American Express and surprisingly they don't take that (and I can't get refunded on any other purchases other than that card). So that's disappointing but otherwise, love the place! (And a little Yelp hint: when you see a one-star review, like Lola in this thread, check their reviews. If all or most of their reviews are one-star (like Lola), they're not legit and only out to troll and can be disregarded). read more

I am happy to have found this store next to the Kinnard building. They have all your necessary hardware and mostly general store items, reasonable prices (for most things), and very friendly staff. They also do Lamp and small appliance repair, which I find to be a neat and unique service. Read on for a funny story about this! A few tips for customers: TIP 1- If you're timid or unskilled at leaving a small parking space, PARK by the Kinnard building or pull in backwards if parking in front of the store. I have seen so many cars struggle to leave the parking lot for many reasons, most which are their own fault but also largely because of impatient and uncourteous drivers (did I just make up a word!?) TIP 2- Apparently Lamp repairs are costly (in general)! I wish I knew even a ballpark figure how much my lamp repair was going to cost me before I took it in. I didn't know how expensive these repairs are, so I didn't think to ask. I brought a $5 Goodwill lamp in (most likely originally from Target) to get the two sockets fixed and it cost me around $65. It may not sound like a lot to you, but I would NEVER have paid this much for a non-sentimental generic, second hand lamp, which I don't even have a shade for yet bu the way! Then, come to find out, if I had wanted anything but the ugly black plastic sockets, like if I maybe wanted the old fashioned exposed Edison lightbulb look, then it would need to be completely redone and basically I would have needed to express that beforehand. *I am not wholly blaming them for this, and I am not saying they're over-charging. I am saying, I learned to ask for an estimate. I am also saying, since they're the pros and know what's possible, it would have been much appreciated if they asked me for more details like, "what style sockets would you like?" I had never had a lamp repaired and I was completely ignorant to this stuff. I am literally kicking myself for even buying a stupid lamp at the stupid Goodwill, especially without a stupid lamp shade, which is going to cost me another stupid wad of dough!! (Can you tell I'm projecting now!?) So, in summary, this is a great local shop. I will continue to shop there for my local hardware and general store needs. They are friendly and very welcoming. If you're going to bring in a lamp or small appliance for repair, maybe get an estimate and ask what all your options are before just dropping it off and being shell shocked upon pickup. P.S. The lamp is still in my trunk. I'm so frustrated, I can't bring myself to look at it or even plug it in to test if it works. So there's that. read more

I pulled up at 4:30 bc everywhere online says they're open until 5 and the doors were locked and there were 4 other people pulling in as well frustrated the hours online were not honored. This is a good old-fashioned family run hardware store, the kind your daddy patronized. They do pretty much anything: cut glass, sell grass seed by the scoop, sharpen your knives and even scissors, rewire your lamps, etc. I am a handyman, and they are the best I have ever encountered. As a person with a black thumb and zero "fix-it" sense, I love Hillsboro Hardware. It reminds me of an old-time, small town hardware store that has almost anything you can imagine. Flower seeds and gardening tools? Landscaping needs? Check. Keys made? Check. Paint supplies, hedge trimmers, sleds in the wintertime, Pyrex kitchenware, slow cookers, wind chimes...see what I'm getting at? Eclectic variety. The folks there are friendly; if you know what you need but absolutely do not know what you need, they are there to help (I've described many a household hardware item as a "brass thingy" and they don't flinch). It smells good in there too...kind of like sawdust-meets-fertilizer-meets cut grass. I'd say it always smells like summer no matter what the season. Yes I'm weird! read more

Since moving to Nashville, Hillsboro Hardware has become a kind of father figure to me. Didn't realize your new washer needs a new drain hose and flooded the kitchen (yes I did that) call Hillsboro Hardware. Don't know which size hose you'll need? The employees are THE KINDEST and will take you back and show you exactly what you'll need. They've helped me clean up my messiest DIY home project mistakes to the point that I've quit calling my father 2 states away while he's trying to watch the Bama game. He's enterally thankful and so am I that no matter what I need, the guys at Hillsboro Hardware are knowledgeable, kind and have exactly what I need. read more

Hillsboro Hardware is a lovely little business with a kind staff, a copious selection and clean, organized store that isn't even overwhelming to me--an all-thumbs non-hardware expert. I typically get any of my handy-work needs at East Nashville's Cumberland Hardware, but I was on the West Side today and in need of a couple of items, so I decided to check it out. Hillsboro is a relatively large hardware store, and they also specialize in gardening and outdoor tools. Unlike most of the independent hardware stores I've visited, Hillsboro is spacious and organized, and even without help from the staff I was able to locate everything I needed in a matter of minutes. Hillsboro seems to have supplies and a selection comparable to a large chain store like Ace, but the fellows who run the place are really accommodating. They don't seem to mind helping a doofus like me tell the difference between various types of screws, et cetera. The parking lot at Hillsboro is a bit small, but there's typically a spot or two open. That's genuinely my only complaint for the place. read more

I have dropped in four times in the last 30 days and have been generally pleased until today. I had shopped here because it's convenient and local. And had "helpful" help. Never again. The sales help is rude and condescending if you don't know technical terms of what you need. They are eager at first then give YOU the customer a hard time if you don't understand. When a customer is told by a worker, "I'm walking away"..... I reply "well I'm shopping elsewhere" Never again will I shop here. Entirely unprofessional and totally without concern to help the CUSTOMER. I will take the hassle of a big box store ANY DAY instead of this. I have spent hundreds of dollars here for the convenience and neighborly factor but no more. Get staff who are polite and kind and helpful and able to speak without having an attitude and able to treat YOU the customer LIKE A CUSTOMER. Good bye. read more

I have no complaints about Hillsboro Hardware. I came here last Saturday and parked in the Harris Teeter lot (shhh -- don't tell) and walked over, as I wasn't sure if there was an easy place to park at HH. Upon walking in, I was promptly greeted and pointed to the key duplication area, which is conveniently right in front. I needed two copies of my mailbox key. I had gotten them duplicated at another store, but they hadn't worked, so I told the HH key-man that I was worried about the prospect a new set may not work either. He assured me he would take extra time to make sure the angles were ground down properly. He asked me to check the keys, which I did. I saw that one of the nooks wasn't quite as sharp of a right angle as the original, so I tried to point this out and he thanked me for pointing it out and fixed it right then. Also, I had snuck in Teeter to use the facilities before walking over to HH, as I assumed they may not have a restroom for customers. AU CONTRAIRE! They do have a restroom! I heard someone else ask for the key from the front desk to use it. Also - I only paid $3.37 for two mailbox keys! Just over half what I paid for the non-working keys at a different store! Great prices, friendly service AND the possibility to excrete waste in-house? Awesome. I'll be back. read more

I used to go in here a while back when I worked next door. They may not have *quite* as much stuff as a big box retailer--but they have enough merch on hand that they likely have what you need without having to go to the outskirts. The staff is always friendly and pro-actively leave the counter and help you find whatever you need. One more thing.....Not all key cutters are the same. Often you go get a copy made of a key and it is a 50/50 proposition on whether it will work or not. I hope I'm not jinxing myself, but that has never happened so far from any key I have made at Hillsboro Hardware. They just know how to cut keys better. read more

This is the only place I will get key copies made. The big box retailers I have tried - Home Depot and Lowe's - were a waste of money and time, as the copies did. not. work. I generally like to support local businesses, and Hillsboro Hardware is a perfect example of why - quick and attentive customer service from long-time employees that you can build a relationship with and extensive knowledge of their product. Somehow I missed out on getting the handyman gene that everyone else in my family has. Anyway, I am one of those women who is intimidated by plumbing and frankly frightened by (or shall I say, respectful of) electricity and gas. And fairly ignorant of fix-it techniques. So the help and advice I get from the friendly (and patient) guys at Hillsboro Hardware is priceless. They will tell you if they think a particular product won't really solve your problem and will steer you to cost-effective solutions. That is why I am giving HH the full five stars, even though the parking is almost non-existent, and difficult to get in and out of, especially during busy times of the day. (The best thing to do is go past it and park behind the building next door, but don't tell anyone I said that.) read more

Whatever you need for your home, Hillsboro Hardware has it! Drawer organizers, drain cleaner, yard rake, and decorative door matts all in the same place? You bet! The list goes on and on. They couldn't be friendlier in there, and if you can't find what you are looking for, they can! One major convenience is that they can make duplicates of keys, whether door, mailbox, car, or whatever, in a matter of minutes. When I moved in my new house and got one (1) key, they made several for me right there. And they tell you if for some reason they don't work, come right back and they'll try until they get it right! You won't find a more homey, "old Nashville" place than Hillsboro Hardware. It's a throwback in time. I find myself looking for reasons to stop in. And that's saying a lot! read more

I quickly perused some of the other Yelp reviews for this hardware store, and all but one reviewer said that it reminded them of a small town hardware store. These reviewers must be a bit older than me because the only hardware stores I am familiar with is Home Depot. The location of Hillsboro Hardware is right near where I live, which is nice, since I don't have to drive to the outskirts of town to visit one of the mega hardware store centers. Since I moved out of the family house years ago, I have been slowly becoming more competent at fixing little things by myself. When I decided to install some Ethernet cables in the second guest room of the house I was living in, the folks at Hillsboro Hardware were able to help me out... Big Time! They recommended the type of drill that I should buy some little gizmos for getting wire through walls. They were understanding that I was a beginner! I don't think I could have completed the project without their help. I will definitely stop here first on the next occasion that I have some "do it yourself" chores to attend to. read more

The rating mostly hinges on the location. It's just a lot more convenient than hitting the 4-lane to get out to Lowesly Worm or Homer Despot. This place is great for the things you forgot to get at the big box. I really like that they sell nails and screws in bulk; it's a little cheaper than buying them in boxes at the big dogs. They also have a good selection of plumbing supplies. Don't go looking for tile or associated tools, and don't expect to find very many tools made in the USA. read more

It's hard for me to write a 5-star review for a hardware store, when my hometown hardware store was excellent (although, admittedly, that seems to have changed, as after we moved, the owners retired and their kids do not have the customer service focus that the owners had). The local hardware store for me was the place to get my household items from, since the local CVS was just horrible when it replaced the Walgreens. I came in here a few weeks ago, and was somewhat disappointed at their selection. I don't know if they were in the middle of waiting for more stock to come in, but there were empty spaces in between the goods. I am thrilled they carry Lodge cast iron products here. But other everyday items that I would normally get from my old place just were not available here. Oh, I am sure that the staff here would gladly rectify it the best they can, but when there are other places to go to get them, I won't have the patience to wait. Being across the street from a Teeter Harris probably doesn't help. Staff is very friendly and I can see myself coming back for specific home repair items. read more

Being someone who absolutely hates large scale discount or warehouse styled stores, Hillsboro Hardware immediately appeals to me on multiple levels. Probably the most important reason is its convenient location off 21st Ave. I really think this is the only hardware store in the entire downtown Nashville vicinity. I've tried hard to think of another one and I just can't come up with anything (if anyone else can, let me know). Lucky for me, it is in my neck of the woods. I love everything about this place, from its handy merchandise that makes me have more confidence in my handyman abilities than I probably should, to its friendly staff and pleasant customer base. I love its creaky old wooden floor and the smell is just too perfect for me to describe. In fact its probably everything I could imagine a small local hardware store could be. Sure you can't buy industrial sized anythings here like you can at Home Depot, but seriously, does anybody really need most of the stuff you find in a Home Depot anyways? Their parking lot is small and their hours are kinda wonky, but they carry most of what you'll ever need here. They're also one of the only places I know close that make key copies, a fact that is important to know when you're moving into a new place. read more

Hillsboro Hardware definitely reminds me of the hardware store in my hometown in a very good way. As soon as you walk in the door, there's someone to ask if you need help. I get my lawn mower blade sharpened here every year. I have no idea how much that should cost, but it's definitely cheap at Hillsboro Hardware. This is not your huge home-improvement store. Hillsboro Hardware has knowledgeable people who can give you the kind of advice for a project that you can trust. I needed to get some kind of polish or protectant for my wood outdoor furniture and the guy was able to give me two or three choices with pros and cons for each. He hadn't heard of Ikea, but hey. They've also got grass seed you can buy by the pound instead of just a bag of Scott's. I still can't seem to get my grass to grow, but I'm sure if I went back in to Hillsboro Hardware they could tell me what I'm doing wrong. The only drawback to this place is parking. The front parking lot is tricky to get in and out of. I always drive around back hoping there's parking there, but I don't think there are any spots. There is street parking though, so there you go. read more

This place has everything. I'm not kidding. Not to mention, the employees are super nice and very helpful. I used to live right across the street and would wander in for random housewares on occasion. The staff never made me feel like a stupid girl, no matter how well my questions suited that description. I've gotten everything here from hammers, to potting soil, to chicken wire (don't ask). Their prices always seemed fair. Not as good as the big retailers, but not crippling. You're throwing shade on my 5 stars. I can feel it. A tiny little old Hardware store and 5-stars? Yup. All 5 stars, baby. And those stars are for service, price, selection, and daring to dream big by constantly stocking sleds when, lets be honest, it hasn't snowed in this town for 8 years. Service....you will be greeted by any number of very cool and crazy knowledgable folks before you have been in the store for more than a minute or two. And you know that 'thingy' you are trying to describe with some weird mashup of American Sign Language with the last flappings of a dying pigeon? They speak this hybrid language of the non-handy folks out there. And yeah, they've got that 'thingy' you want. Price....they could MURDER you on price. You would have a good haul to 100 Oaks for a big box store hardware. But oddly, they don't. The kindly man responding to my flappy bird/ASL inquirey sold what the folks in 'the business' call a drill bit. It makes holes in things. And it was $1 more than what I would have paid on Amazon. Selection...yes, it looks tiny from the front and is sort of an organizational challenge, but did I mention those handy folks? They find crazy stuff in weird corners, and the store goes back much further than you would think looking at the front. They also do mad things like fix the crap you (I mean your kids) broke. So you don't have to buy new crap. Windows, screens, lamps, small appliances, my chainsaw (yes, I know, I really shouldn't have a chainsaw, but zombie apocolypse and whatnot)...call them and ask, you might be surprised to find out what they can do. They sure like to at least take things apart and since I kill appliances things like crazy, it's not going to get deader by bringing it in to check. I love that this place has held steady with its crappy drive backwards onto 21st Ave parking lot while mixed residential retail buildings are springing up around Hillsboro like mad. From the time I was old enough to hold a broom, I worked in our small-town, family hardware and furniture store in Kentucky. Hillsboro Hardware reminds me of home and what I think of as hardware perfection every time I walk in the door. As others have stated, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Their stock is perfectly adequate for fixit work around the house and probably a little more. They're exactly what a local, neighborhood hardware store needs to be. We try to support local businesses before big box retailers, and HH rarely provides us with a reason to travel farther than the few blocks of walking. We go there first for everything we need. Highly recommended. The front lot has limited parking, but there's a garage around the corner that does the job just fine for quick visits. read more

I was visiting my daughter in Nashville and she asked me to hang a modern chandelier. Unfortunately the one she purchased was intended to hang straight but her ceiling sloped. I called all the lamp and chandeliers places around town but nobody had what I needed. I then searched online and found what I needed but I needed it right away and it was the weekend. While doing my online search i noticed that Hillsboro hardware mentioned they had lamp and chandelier repair parts. I figured what the heck and drove the 6 miles to see if just by chance they had what I needed. To my surprise they had exactly what I needed. A small 1/8 IPS male by female brass swivel. It was perfect for my project. Not only that but it was great service. In and out in minutes. This is what customer service is all about. The right products and the best service. Home Depot and Lowes only wish they could say that. Even with their huge stores they would never have this part. The bean counters that run those companies would never permit it.
