Just a reminder that every review of the new Hillsboro Hops facility starts at -$43 million for state, Washington County, Tualatin Valley, and Hillsboro taxpayers, so let's see what that got us. The fam somehow scored free (!) tickets to the Fourth of July fireworks game, so we did what I vowed to never do, paid the $9.50 in parking (because we'll never make back the investment otherwise) and went to the new ballpark. In some ways, they listened to the complaints I've been making for years. The new place no longer angles fans directly into the setting sun, which is really the bare minimum, and actually has some hops growing on the grounds. They have roughly as many bines as I have in my backyard, but it's something. Maybe now that they're partnered with local brewery Budweiser, the team can take those hops down to the brewery in Van Nuys and make a batch of Hillboro Bud Light. There are some local partnerships (look at that shiny Portland Cider bus) and some party decks, and I'm told they change up the menus for certain promotional nights, but that hasn't done much to change the culture of the place. During a 1-0 loss coming toward the end of a full-series sweep by Spokane, the crowd was not only as library-silent and stoic as usual, but listless. You got the sense that the baseball was a perfunctory requirement and that the fireworks display--as was so often the case at the old building's "fireworks Fridays"--was the main event in a town that lacks a civic fireworks display of its own. Again, we didn't pay for our tickets, but the pricing at this level of play seems like madness. Yes, your get-in-the-door price is $11.50, but that's to walk the grounds and maybe sit on a berm. It's $23 to sit in the worst corner, then $30 to $60 for any non-lounge seat. Get into the lounges--your tax dollars at work--and its $85 to $135. For single-A baseball. Never mind that you could've seen NBA basketball for less this year--and could definitely catch the WNBA, NWSL, or AUSL and better athletes for a better price. The Hops seem bent on "dreaming big" and trying to woo a coveted AA team here, regardless of what it does to attendance. I saw MLB tout the Hops' "record" Fourth of July weekend box office, but didn't see them note that Sunday's game pulled in just above 1,200 people--or about 1,800 less than what softball's been averaging right across the parking lot. In fact, much of the Hops' attendance for this season has fallen below the 3,000 mark, which would've been a comfortable squeeze in its old 4,500-capacity digs. Now that it's allegedly seating 6,500 (though a "sold out" 4th was sub-5,500), I'm wondering if attendance means as much as amenities in their equation anymore. They promised concerts later this year, and they're bringing in one surviving member of Chicago, but if the main draw is going to be the same sub-.500 minor-league baseball they've been pushing at taxpayers in recent years, they may be better off just hosting fireworks and taking notes when their "women in sports night" comes around. I was able to experience the new ballpark for the first time on AAPI night and the hops secured a win, so I felt especially lucky. My husband snagged Meridian club tickets from Facebook marketplace, which made for a very special date night. The club level includes food (hot dog bar and poke bar buffet for AAPI night, along with dessert and drinks) which I found to be an incredible value. The club layout is very spacious with a variety of I indoor and outdoor seating options and restrooms are located on either side. Service was outstanding. The staff are so welcoming, personable and friendly. I had so many great conversations and interactions with a variety of staff. Can't beat a brand new shiny stadium, but this one needs a bit more personality. I feel like the old stadium had a bit more character, but that may take some time. Minus one star for nickel and diming the $9.50 parking (which took a LONG time to exit 20+ minutes) and the $12 tall boy cans of beer, ouch. I have been going to see the HOPS since they first came to HILLSBORO about 10 years ago. This is the ONLY Major League Baseball in the Portland area. Sorry, but the Pickles are not an MLB team. The HOPS are a minor league, high A affiliate. What this means (important) is if you are a College Baseball player who was drafted, this team will be your first stop. You will be on display, tested and worked with to see if, you can make it in the BIGS. So, it is a lot of fun to watch the players on both teams try-try-try as hard as they can. The new stadium that is brand new this year, has got to be the nicest minor league stadium on the West Coast. It has something for everyone with multiple levels of seating. From, $12.00 admission in the grass area where the kids play ground is, $22.00 seats on the first and third base line all the way up to $122.00 seats that include a full buffet with free Beer and Wine during the game. The regular game food on the first level is affordable and very tasty. The Maletis group is a sponsor, so you will find a lot of Budweiser Beer and local Micro's too. PARKING is about $10. Get there early as the closest spots get taken quickly. The OWNERS, attend every game since they moved the old Yakima Bears team from Yakima, WA to Hillsboro to start the HOPS. Getting in was easy, you show them your ticket, go thru metal detectors and then you're in. Ok but now what? We went to a Hops game with our (now adult) children, and it was a fun, comfortable experience. The ballpark is part of a sports complex, so when we parked, we were under the impression that we were closer to the stadium than we actually were - we ended up walking around a soccer/football field to get to the baseball venue. Once inside, the ballpark reminds me of the spring training facilities I've seen in Arizona - good sightlines from a well laid out set of grandstands. They have a nice selection of concessions, my only disappointment was seeing one restaurant chain present that is known for its support of intolerance. Otherwise, food and drinks showed good quality local representation. Stadium employees were friendly and well trained, doing a good job of keeping people out of the aisles (and other fans' sightlines) while action was happening. We go to about 2 maybe 3 games a year, usually in a group of 8-10 people. Typically the games have a good family atmosphere. We went last night and some obnoxious younger kids got behind us and were cheering for the last 2-3 innings, but fortunately they weren't cursing either. Pretty exciting game, though, and lots of hustle as well. Go to the 7pm games. Sit on the 3rd base line. There is more shade. Sun is typically behind us. Great seats, there! I would much rather watch this on a summer night than watch a bunch of whiny millionaires that play about 15 miles down the road. I've done that about 4-5 times in the last 3-4 years. As far as I'm concerned I don't need to do it ever again. Little concerned that when the new Hops stadium comes in we might be "priced out," though. We shall see. read more

They have an indoor lounge above home plate, but you can't buy tickets for that room. Another venue that expects ticket holders to endure, while the VIPs get to sit comfortably inside. I don't normally get angry about stuff like this, but right now I am so beyond angry, I'm seeing red. I went to get food for myself, and my kid at the burger and chicken tenders kiosk. It took less than 10 minutes to order, And then I proceeded to wait 45 minutes for my food. I waited so long that I considered walking away and forfeiting my money. But I had to feed my child. So I stayed. I had ordered a plain cheeseburger, nothing on it but cheese. No sauce or anything. They added everything to it. No one apologized for the tremendously long wait. No one warned me about the wait times. No one apologized for the messed up order. I just said "forget it, I won't wait any longer", and I walked away with my incorrect, 2 item order. Oh, and I got a sprite. When I got back to my seat. My kid says "this tastes like water". I tasted it. It was ice water. I went back and asked for a replacement drink. Again, no apology for messing up another part of my order. This staff has no clue what they are doing. One girl was at the order pickup window, expediting orders. And 3 girls were at the order and pay window, 2 of which appeared to just be waiting for people to order beer. I will never come here again. I missed the first 4 innings of the game. read more

We are so glad to have the Hops in our community and as my son is a big baseball fan, this is a great way to have some family fun. We enjoy going to games. On super sunny, hot nights it's hard to find shade in the stands which is hard for me as I can't regulate my body temperature well since brain injury. But before it was never an issue and have also sat in the grass areas too. There are some decent food options. It's not the cheapest family night out so we can't do it all the time, but we usually try to do a few games a year. My son does private coaching with Tony Pine and Five Tool Baseball Academy and gets to practice in the batting cages at the Hops stadium and absolutely loves it. We are grateful that The Hops are in Hillsboro, such a neat addition and as someone who grew up here and 2 miles away I can see and feel how amazing this is for a kid to grow up with access to it. Love watching the Hops, but very disappointed by my experience with the Team Store. I bought a $34 hat and wore it to my softball game a few days later. The hat fell off on a Texas leaguer that I dove for, and I was surprised to see that the cardboard inside the brim had broken. I've never seen that. I would have been fine to keep the hat with a bent brim, but not a broken one. Again, I've never seen that happen and I had just bought the hat. My brother bought me a $79 Soñadores (Hops alternate logo) jersey, and I went to pick it up and return the damaged hat. The employee working at the team store refused to accept a return, replacement, or credit, because the hat was damaged while I was wearing it. This employee appeared to be a supervisor, and his demeanor was disrespectful. He also carried out the whole transaction with no mask, indoors, and none of his employees were wearing masks either. I can understand the policy, but I also left with a bad taste in my mouth. My family and I spend a good chunk of change on Hops games, concessions, and now merchandise. Is rudely refusing a return of a $34 item - while the customer is picking up a $70+ item - worth alienating your fan base/future customers? I would hope not. In customer service, engendering and rewarding loyalty is often a better business strategy than trying to squeeze every dime out of your customers. I think next time my family goes to a Hops game, we'll eat a nice healthy meal beforehand and skip the $60 concessions tab (plus tip). Or maybe skip the Hops tickets and head into Portland for a Pickles game. read more

Went to my first Hops game, an evening home game, a few weeks back. Had a good experience; easy access/good signage from the freeway and hassle-free parking, clean, attractive stadium, courteous, helpful staff, enthusiastic fans, tasty fresh food, Barley the mascot is a hoot, and of course, the team! That's a five star review. Today was different. I skipped lunch with friends so I could call the Hops ticket office hoping to buy tickets for today's afternoon home game. I could have bought them online and enjoyed the lunch, but today's a scorcher, and I wanted to know if the stadium has seats in the shade. (If we'd been told "no shade available" we simply would have waited for a night game/cooler weather.) We had two young people with us who had never seen a live ballgame before. We wanted to sit where they could see the action up close if that was possible. I was assured the stadium has some sections in the shade, with a good view of the infield, which we could reserve if I paid a premium ticket price, and sat on a different side of the stadium than we prefer. Being a redheaded skin cancer survivor I bought the tickets. We didn't go home to get hats, long sleeves/pants for our seats in the shade. As we drove out to Hillsboro from Portland we talked about what fun it is to be fans, how if the kids enjoyed the game today, we could become Hops fans, and attend home games regularly. When we got to the stadium we saw that our seats were in the full-on sun. When I asked about the seats in the shade, a staff member told us they don't have seats in the shade and it was unfortunate I'd been told otherwise. He said they'd try to accommodate us. After about 30 minutes standing in the shade, we were offered seats at a table in a tent, out beyond the third base bleachers, too far out for the kids to really see the batter and the infield game. I appreciate the Hops offer of the tent seating, but asked for a refund, so we could come back and enjoy the game close up, on our preferred side, without sitting in the blazing sun. We were told they don't give refunds (even though we would not have bought the tickets, paid for parking, or driven all the way out there, had we not been misinformed by a Hops rep.) We spent the afternoon inching out and back on Hi 26, and I'm out $56.00. Not feeling much like a fan at the moment. A review of today's experience would be two star. The three stars is an average of the two experiences. PS I'm guessing the Hillsboro cop in riot gear, standing adjacent to the ticket-takers, cradling his large black assault rifle, was there as a warning to anyone with bad intentions, or perhaps reassurance to fans? It was creepy to me. (Esp knowing that the cops with assault rifles who swarmed the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooter, within 60 seconds of his opening fire, still weren't fast enough to save the people he targeted with his assault rifle.) read more

I had an excellent time at a Hops game while visiting Oregon. I'm a huge baseball fan and enjoy seeing different parks at all levels. For a low A baseball, the ticket prices are a bit steep, but Ron Tonkin field is a very nice venue and rivals some Triple A fields I've visited. Barley, the Hops mascot is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen, he's absolutely perfect. Baseball often gets a bad rap for being too slow or "boring" and it was clear the team makes an effort to keep the fans engaged through various activities between innings. I've never lived in a city that didn't have at least one professional baseball team, and midway through my first summer in Portland I started to get the itch. If you want to be taken out to the ball game in the greater Portland area, the Hops are your team. The Hillsboro Hops are a Class A short season affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks (essentially making them the 5th tier of the organization). You won't hear any flashy names here, and most players were taken in the 15th round or later in the first year player draft. Still, the Hops and their Northwest League Opponents play competitive games that are fun to watch. When buying tickets, keep in mind that the cheap ($7) are general admission, and will have you sitting on the grass somewhere in the outfield. This is a decent option, just make sure you bring fold up chairs or a blanket. $14 tickets get you a reserved seat somewhere near 1st or 3rd base, likely in direct sun for day games. "Premium Seating" ($16) gets you a reserved seat in the shade. In all cases, the earlier you buy your tickets, the closer you'll be to the action. The official beer of the Hillsboro Hops is Bridgeport Brewing. Having been to a lot of baseball games at Milwaukee's Miller Park (guess what kind of beer they sell?), I LOVE having lots of local craft beer choices at the ballpark. 16 oz. beers are $6, 20 oz. beers are $7. If you want Coors Lite, that's a dollar less. So just get Bridgeport. I wouldn't call myself a "Hops fan," but I'll definitely be back at least once per summer to get my baseball fix. This is Single A Professional Baseball. The Hillsboro Hops are a minor league farm team for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The stadium is brand new and I attended the second (ever) game at the stadium. This is good old wholesome minor league baseball. Fun little games in-between innings (involving game attendees in the stands) , fun baseball with young players giving their all to do well (and move up closer to the major leagues) and a great crowd. After the game, if you go to the dugout, the players will sign autographs and they are great with kids. Typical baseball stadium food (dogs, peanuts, burgers, beer) but they also had a garden burger (for the vegetarians), some GF options (fries, pop chips) and mixed drinks. The burgers came with a good kaiser role, lettuce and tomato. The stadium was clean, everyone seemed very happy to be there and were respectful to one another. (I've been to MLB, NHL games where is was R rated re: crass language and topics of discussion). Unlike the major league games I've been to, our "neighbors" here were so nice to the kids and there was no language issues. That'll change with every game but this night was great. It's perfect for a fun night out with the kids especially with kids who hopefully like baseball. The little games and entertainment in between can generally keep their attention. The stadium is new and very clean. It's small, 4000+ seats, but that makes it all the more special. The tickets were about $14 a piece and there are really cheap "seats" on a lawn section in the outfield. Parking is $5 Bring a jacket for when the sun goes down and I recommend sitting somewhere in sections 1-12 if you want to avoid sun in your eyes. Came here last night for a game and I will definitely be returning. The only reason for not 5 stars is because there are no water fountains, which makes you more inclined to purchase beverages from their vendors. Also, they charge 5 dollars for parking. I would recommend parking at McMenamins (get your grub on prior to the game) or LA Fitness and walk over. We were over charged when purchasing some beverages and because so we were given two free beers and a free water, pretty sweet! read more

Wow waited forever in line to see a single A team.. No overhead signage with pricing. Therefore, everyone waited until at the window to think about what tickets they wanted. Handicapped parking is far away, but the classic cars got great parking. I would have gone to the team store while hubby got tickets, but couldn't. It is closed to the outside. I wanted to get a jersey before we moved here to support the community team. Couldn't. No xx larges available for hubby. Guess they don't know how to order more. Just watched the Diamondbacks v the Reds and Dbacks v Dodgers. Stood less time in line for that. Paid about the same. Wow. Food was ummmm, not fantastic...but it's a ballpark. The game was good. Players really love baseball still. Both teams were truly trying, and you are very close to the action. They need to fix the issues with lines, and they need to reconsider some family pricing. The seven dollar tickets require you to sit in the grass--that used to be the free seats in Vegas. I paid $12 for a bleacher seat that was not covered. They don't have a family deal --AAA team in Vegas has a deal where you get four tickets, a hot dog and coke for each person for $40. Nothing like that here. They also need to reconsider the amount of season tickets that are sold and then sit empty. It is not a large enough ball park to leave those seats sit empty--it makes it look to a person driving by that there is no one at the game. read more

Having come from Angels country, I never even thought about what happens if it starts to rain at a game. You know what happens? Something called a rain delay. And I'm not waiting around to find out if shit is going to resume. Sadly, we only got 3 innings before the rain got to be too much. Gladly, I finished my wine before we had to shove off. Neutrally, they picked up the game at 11:30 that night (for a 7 pm game) and although we were killing it beforehand we lost our mojo later on and lost the game. Damn rain. Stadium is top notch: new, nice bathrooms, decent food selection, great wine and beer. Bridgeport makes a few brews especially for the Hops. The mascot is a total badass. FYI read more

Had a fun time the other night at the Hops game, even though they lost. It is an intimate stadium, and we were close to home plate and it wasn't too expensive for a night out. I am glad there is some baseball to watch in Portland (Hillsboro?) because I missed the game when the Beavers left town. If you haven't watched minor league baseball you should give it a try. There is something happening between innings and the score is oftentimes higher than in a Major league game. I must say that I was unsure exactly what this would be like. I had never been to a minor league baseball game before. This was a great time. I will definitely go again. My only complaint was that there was no good concessions available. I didn't want any of the beers or foods available and I wanted something. We watched the Hops get beat, but it was still a good time. I think that the minor league might actually be more interesting to watch since more stuff happens. I have been a season ticket holder every since the club came here. I now bring my grandchildren. One of my grandson attended a recent game with me and went down to the dugout railing after the game like he has previously. He has gratefully received a practice ball from players and saviors them. Last night he and others went down and the players absolutely ignored him and all the fans and there were several balls on the floor of the dugout. This kind of behavior by the team, if condoned by the administrations and managers is going to be the standard then you will loose one season ticket holder and I am sure others when they get the same feedback from the kind of behavior shown by your ballplayers towards the people that pay their salaries. read more

I've been to a handful of Hops games and it's been a great time. Tonight was the first time we had both of our young kids with us, my son's first Hops game. The night started great when they were picked to do the home plate spray painting to start the game and meet Barley on the field...they were thrilled! The game was good although the Hops lost, the food was ok, the drink options great. Everyone had a nice time. The reason for the two stars is this....after the game they allow the young kids to go out and run the bases. We were in the far corner of the stadium and had to make our way to the other side while everyone was filing out. We got to the first base side and one of the workers sent my kids down a row towards the field. They get down there and the worker on the field told them to turn around, go back to the concourse and come down another row further down the baseline. Fine, but why not just send the kids the extra 30 feet down the field to 1st base and let them go? No big deal I guess. So they come back up and we go down to the next row so they can get on the field. As they're heading down another worker sees them and tells the on-field worker there are two more children coming down. The lady working on the field closes the gate literally right in front of them and says "We're done. You need to leave." Turns her back and walks away. That's it. So my kids walk back up, my seven year old daughter crying all the way back to the car. These games are intended to be family friendly and involving the kids in these small activities helps to build their love for the game and the atmosphere at the ball park. This was a really disappointing end to a nice evening and a stellar example of someone that could care less about their role and impact on the ball club. You have so many nice people working around your stadium that were nothing but kind to the kiddos, yet one unhappy person had to spoil the evening. read more

I have to give it a one star because the server/bartender wrote in her own tip on my credit card. I understand that 2 beers will cost upwards of $15 but writing in an additional tip without my knowledge or consent is inappropriate to say the least. Unfortunately we tipped in cash so it's even more upsetting. I believe the business that handles the stadiums alcohol is separate from the stadium but neither group seemed all that interested in resolving the issue. Tonight was my first Hops game! It was a good game (5-4 Hops), fans were solid (over 4,000 people attended), spirits were high, and the field/stadium/facilities were nice and new. I especially liked the neon sign that glowed at the gate when you exited. Parking wasn't too bad and people were polite and organized getting out of the lot after the game. The General Admission "seating" (picnic-style on grass by the outfield) is great IF you have small kids and don't want to wrestle them into staying in your lap as they can run around a bit in the GA area. I noticed most people in the GA section were families with small children. That said, I would opt to pay a few bucks more for a real seat and not have to watch the game through a chain-link fence (usually that's how people who DON'T buy a ticket watch the game!). Definitely buy a reserved seat; it's absolutely worth it. Unfortunately, the concessions were gross (I had a hot dog, soda, and "garlic fries" which were just regular fries that reminded me of cafeteria fries from grade school with a no-name garlic aioli on the side). The hot dogs at Costco are way better and cost a quarter of the price. I don't know if you're allowed to bring in food, but I would! Or maybe eat dinner before you get to the park? A lot of people drank the craft beer so maybe that's what people should spend their money on at the concession stand. Just don't bother with the hot dog. The only thing worse than buying overpriced food is half-eaten overpriced food. But the game was fun; I'll definitely go back next season! Let's go, Hops! read more
