They do a great job and add a lot to a region that is booming tremendously. The crowds here are excellent, compared to a lot of other teams in the NWSL league. They play at Providence Park. The Portland stadium (Providence Park) is an absolute credit to the region, and it's the oldest soccer stadium in the country, and houses both the Thorns and the legendary Timber. It's a region that doesn't have many real big name professional sports teams and the Timber are one of the pride and joys of Oregon. They are also former Champions and when they play in the stadium it's honestly very hard for anyone to beat them. It is close to downtown and utterly amazing.

There are snacks at a pretty decent rate - hot dogs, nachos (which are crazy big and loaded!), sodas, candy and chips plus a beer/wine garden. Cash only so plan accordingly but their merch table can take cards and they have some pretty great merch. I know the Portland Timbers best for their MLS Cup 2018 matchup against Atlanta United FC. It was…read moreonly our (Atlanta) second season in existence and we beat the Timbers, 2-0, in Atlanta. It was a big win for the city as an Atlanta pro sports team had not won a championship since the Atlanta Braves won the 1995 World Series. The Timbers played Atlanta United in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Timbers were the MLS Cup 2015 champions, beating Columbus Crew SC, 2-1, despite Portland playing a road game at MAPFRE Stadium in Ohio. The Timbers set an MLS Cup record in that match when Diego Valeri scored only 27 seconds into the game (fastest goal recorded in the championship match to date). Valeri went on to be named MLS Cup MVP. Also, similar to Atlanta above, it was a big win for the city of Portland as a Portland pro sports team had not won a championship since the Portland Trail Blazers won the 1977 NBA World Championship Series (now known as the NBA Finals). Caleb Porter coached the Timbers from 2013 to 2017 and, somewhat ironically, has been head coach of Columbus Crew SC since 2019. He was a great coach for Portland. The Timbers' first MLS season was in 2011. So far, the 2015 and 2018 MLS Cups have been the team's only appearances in MLS' championship match. In those seasons, the Timbers finished in fifth and third place, respectively, in the Western Conference. Both in 2013 and 2017, they finished in first, but were unable to make it past the Conference Finals in 2013 and Conference Semifinals in 2017. In 2013 and 2018, the team had impressive 15-game unbeaten streaks. Overall, all seasons combined, the Timbers have been a middle-of-the-pack MLS squad. Over the years, goalkeepers Donovan Ricketts and Adam Kwarasey tallied high numbers of shutouts. Some of their single-season shutout numbers approached league records. In 2013, Ricketts had 14 shutouts and in 2015, Kwarasey had 13. Incredible. Portland won the one-off MLS is Back Tournament in August 2020, earning a spot in the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League.

The fam somehow scored free (!) tickets to the Fourth of July fireworks game, so we did what I vowed to never do, paid the $9.50 in parking (because we'll never make back the investment otherwise) and went to the new ballpark. In some ways, they listened to the complaints I've been making for years. The new place no longer angles fans directly into the setting sun, which is really the bare minimum, and actually has some hops growing on the grounds. They have roughly as many bines as I have in my backyard, but it's something. Maybe now that they're partnered with local brewery Budweiser, the team can take those hops down to the brewery in Van Nuys and make a batch of Hillboro Bud Light. There are some local partnerships (look at that shiny Portland Cider bus) and some party decks, and I'm told they change up the menus for certain promotional nights, but that hasn't done much to change the culture of the place. During a 1-0 loss coming toward the end of a full-series sweep by Spokane, the crowd was not only as library-silent and stoic as usual, but listless. You got the sense that the baseball was a perfunctory requirement and that the fireworks display--as was so often the case at the old building's "fireworks Fridays"--was the main event in a town that lacks a civic fireworks display of its own. Again, we didn't pay for our tickets, but the pricing at this level of play seems like madness. Yes, your get-in-the-door price is $11.50, but that's to walk the grounds and maybe sit on a berm. It's $23 to sit in the worst corner, then $30 to $60 for any non-lounge seat. Get into the lounges--your tax dollars at work--and its $85 to $135. For single-A baseball. Never mind that you could've seen NBA basketball for less this year--and could definitely catch the WNBA, NWSL, or AUSL and better athletes for a better price. The Hops seem bent on "dreaming big" and trying to woo a coveted AA team here, regardless of what it does to attendance. I saw MLB tout the Hops' "record" Fourth of July weekend box office, but didn't see them note that Sunday's game pulled in just above 1,200 people--or about 1,800 less than what softball's been averaging right across the parking lot. In fact, much of the Hops' attendance for this season has fallen below the 3,000 mark, which would've been a comfortable squeeze in its old 4,500-capacity digs. Now that it's allegedly seating 6,500 (though a "sold out" 4th was sub-5,500), I'm wondering if attendance means as much as amenities in their equation anymore. They promised concerts later this year, and they're bringing in one surviving member of Chicago, but if the main draw is going to be the same sub-.500 minor-league baseball they've been pushing at taxpayers in recent years, they may be better off just hosting fireworks and taking notes when their "women in sports night" comes around. Congratulations to the Northwest League's first-half champion Eugene Emeralds, whose city government said a word in their stadium debate that isn't in Hillsboro's vocabulary but saves taxpayers a whole lot of money: No.

The management of the league is piss poor and they treat their teams, players and coaches like crap. I really wish they'd hire an actual umpire crew and not the good ol boys club. Hearing things like "that's a mavericks league strike" only further diminish your reputation. I doubt this will even reach someone who can and WILL make a change but fans should know. Don't waste your money if you actually like baseball and watching a competitive game supported by knowledgeable umpires who don't have a personal vendetta with players. Your money would be better spent at the Keizer little league fields watching 8u baseball.

As a big NBA fan in the late 90s and into the 2010s, and as a Georgia Tech alum and longtime men's basketball season ticket holder, never in a million years would I have guessed Damon Stoudamire - of all people - would be one of Tech's head coaches. That was a connection I would have never made. I always saw Damon as a Portland/Pacific NW/NBA kind of guy, *not* an ACC men's basketball coach. I told Damon that when I met him, back in 2024, and he listed a few connections to Atlanta that included his sons. I knew he was well-connected in the basketball world and I could see why Tech's then-athletic director J Batt hired him. Damon can now add ACC head men's basketball coach to his journeyman resume. Also, Damon hired Bonzi Wells to be on his staff. I watched those two up close and in person at about 50 home games over the last three years (2023-2026). Anyway, this review is supposed to be about the Blazers. When I think of the Blazers, I think of Damon, Bonzi, and the "Jail Blazers." I first saw them in person during the 1999-2000 season at Staples Center, Portland at the Los Angeles Clippers. I liked that team and wanted them to win the 2000 NBA championship. It's too bad they didn't because they got so close. I highly recommend watching the 2026 Netflix documentary "Untold: Jail Blazers." It features Damon, Bonzi, and Rasheed Wallace. It's very entertaining to hear their first-hand accounts of the Jail Blazers era. I grew to really like and respect Damon and was sad to see him go. As a diehard Tim Duncan-era Spurs fan, I thought Tiago Splitter did a nice job as interim coach of the Blazers this season.

Providence Park is one of those venues that justifies its reputation the moment you walk in. We've…read moresat all over the stadium over the years, and it's hard to beat the fieldside seats, although there are a few other options that will still get you solid sightlines. For the lower bowl, try sections 117-119 (midfield) or the first 15 rows of the upper East or West stands, to avoid the overhang affecting your view. The North End supporters sections (101-108, for both the Thorns and the Timbers) are an experience unto themselves if you want to be inside the atmosphere rather than watching it: just know it's standing-only and loud by design. Practical notes before you go: the venue is fully cashless, your match ticket doubles as TriMet fare for up to three hours before and after the game, and the bag policy is strict: clear bags can't be larger than 14"w x 14"h x 6"d, and non-clear bags are limited to 4.5" x 6.5". The easiest move is to skip the bag entirely if you can. Lockers are available outside Gates B, D, and F (via the Droplocker app) for $15 if you need them. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip at least once. It's the kind of venue that makes you a soccer fan even if you weren't one walking in.
