Good deli this spot has been up on hillside Ave for decades. I have stop in there numerous times over the years for soda's and snacks etc. I even brought a pair of head phones from this deli.I have to admit I never tried there sandwiches or hot food. But I will give yall a update review on the food.I also use to take the F train local that's literally right out side of the deli. The subway is attached to the deli ,cool for any one coming home from work or going to work via the F train . you can get some breakfast ,lunch or dinner right in side this deli.Thats one of the reasons this deli separates its self from other dell's besides the food. We stopped in Sunday night in a drunken stupor. The good kind! Chopped cheese for everyone across the board. I should've left the review yesterday. Some things taste better drunk. I've never been here or had their chopped cheese, but I'm sure I could eat it sober and it would still be banging. Even at 1am the bread was fresh, which is no small feat for corner store. This sandwich totally hit the spot. I was with two girls and it was their first chopped cheese ever. I think I made the right call because they both loved theirs. I just read all the reviews and if I'm in the area I'll be trying out some different sandwiches (and a chopped cheese again also.) I would certainly recommend this place. This nondescript little deli located by the always bustling 179th Street train station at Hillside Avenue churns out solid sandwiches at a great price. At first glance, one may not think to step in for a (hearty) bite to eat but try them out and you just may find yourself back soon. They have a board full of their favorites but they can just as easily whip up anything else you may be in the mood for. We picked up 5 sandwiches for our - all ranging in heft, taste, and contents - and all of us seemed content. I had the Woodchopper which featured corned beef and pastrami and was left full and pleased. Looking forward to trying out other offerings in the not-too-distant future. Beware that parking isn't always the easiest so grab the 1st spot you get within a block or two and hoof it over. If you park and take the F train from this station, this is not a foreign concept to you. Also, if you're in a rush, factor in the parking time plus the fact that they take a little extra time to make the sandwiches correctly. They don't just throw things together in the interest of savings 30 seconds...and I'm totally fine with that! read more

Fact: In the Fresh Meadows area, all delis either suck or are too expensive. Or both (too often). In other cases, they're not open late enough, so a late night sandwich run is out of the question. BUT, I suppose these are the sacrifices we make to continue living in a quiet single-family house neighborhood that's easy to find street parking in. For now, I will take that sacrifice to travel the 1.5 miles to the Hillside Deli Snack Bar (a name I never call it; I simply know it as the 179th St station corner deli). Now onto my review. My standard sandwich is simple: A cold roast beef and cheddar on a hero with mayo & LT. The Snack Bar makes their own roast beef, going through a few roasts a day. It's a very good roast, with nice flavors and texture. It's not the best roast beef in Queens (best I've had was at the Butcher Block in Sunnyside), but it is exceptional value for the price. You get 1/3 pound (yes, they weigh it) on your hero. No dried out, over-salted generic Boars Head roast beef here, folks. (Not to say all pre-made roast beef is mediocre. The Goose deli in Bethlehem PA uses a very nice roast beef made by Dietz & Watson.) Their Hero bread is nice and soft, with just the right amount of chewiness. I'd love to know where they get their bread from. Along with a nice hard cheddar and LT, you get all that made quickly in a nice tightly packaged hero for the un-princely sum of $6. To me, this represents the best one-meal sandwich deal in Queens. (This excludes the monster sizes heroes that you can get at some other delis which take two meals to finish) Other sandwiches that I've had: - The Reuben is OK - great price (less than $6), but the bread is toasted too hard and the overall flavors run a bit salty. - They make a nice egg and cheese sandwich. - The various Cheese steak sandwiches are good, but I'm partial to my standard roast beef sandwich. That said, this seems to be their most popular sandwich at less than $6. In all, the deli hits all the right notes for me where the Fresh Meadows deli fail. - I've never had a sandwich from any of the Union Tpke delis (between 188th and Utopia) because they all stop making sandwiches around late afternoon. - Double J, which seems to be a go-to spot for SJU students, has tons of sandwich choices and is open late at night. But their pricing is not transparent, and they charge too much (over $7 +TAX!) for what's ultimately mediocre sandwich. They also have an angry glowering Korean cashier/owner taking your money. - Ditto for Fresh Meadows Natural, but with more transparent pricing and without a glowering Korean cashier. - See my review for the Fu Long deli. Ugh. Only get an egg and cheese sandwich here if you must. Overall, it's not ideal, yet I'll gladly make the 1.5 mile trek to get my favorite sandwich. read more

As a previous review noted this is the neighborhood spot for late night munchies. On numerous occasions I've stumbled in after a night of drunken antics to grab a sandwhich. Which is what seperates this deli from the others, their sandwhiches are always on point. I get the New Yorker extra pastrami, the Phillies are good. I mean they're not like the best deli sandwich you can get. But you can't beat a hot pastrami sandwich with melty cheese at 3 o clock in the morning, all the while battling a mean hangover. My review for this place is ridiculously overdue. This has been my go-to spot since I stumbled in back in 1999. The hero sandwiches are cheap ($5 - $7), generous portions of meat, fresher than any fast food joints, and open 24/7. This place also makes chopped cheese sandwiches, which for some reason is almost impossible to find. Major cool points from me! The locals refer to this place as, "The Spot" or "179 Deli." This deli is a regular deli, but with amazing sandwiches for an even more amazing price. You'll spend aobut $5-$7 on any given sandwich. Some of my favorite nights ended with a hero from here. Please believe the hype. The only thing Cherry Valley and Christina's has on this place is that they put gravy on their sandwiches, but that isn't that big a difference to me. Some of my go-to sandwiches are the Chicken Philly which is basically a Philly cheesesteak, but with chicken instead of steak. You can also get an old fashioned cheesesteak and hey if you're feeling up for it, get it with eggs. The Woodchopper is probably the most popular with pastrami, corned beef on a hero. My favorite is the Cuban, which has salty ham, cheese, pickles (I love pickles so I ask for extra), and then is put in a press to make the bread flat and crunchy. It's a religious experience trying any of their sandwiches for the first time. Don't expect to eat there since there isn't any indoor seating. If you're a girl and going late at night I would have some protection with you as the Spot attracts some of the creepiest people in Jamaica. It doesn't bother me, but I would imagine I would be uncomfortable if I was a female. If I were to judge the place on food alone I would give it a 5, but I'm really picky at who I throws 5's to so I'm giving this deli a 4/5 overall. It might come off as strange, but the appearance from the outside is a major turnoff for me. They basically have their whole menu covering the exterior. With such a high demand for their sandwiches, you would think they would have less emphasis on other stuff in there. I think they should get rid of most of the grocery stuff in there and focus more on their deli menu and have a more open space for waiting. However, at the end of the day, I just want my Cuban sandwich with extra pickles please. Pro tip: Call and make your order ahead to save you some time. Meh...don't know why it's got all 5 star reviews. Ordered a Philly Cheesesteak with jalapeños and just got a regular one. Waited 10-15 minutes for a rather large sandwich that had more lettuce than beef. The sandwich itself was average at best, but what annoyed me was 3 or 4 people who ordered after me, got their sandwiches first and they all needed to go on the griddle as well. When I confronted the (who I assume to be) owner, he came up with some bs that I ordered something with beef in it and that's why it takes longer. The place is very tight, they are NY friendly (which, is up front and just like to know what you want), and the food is extremely reasonable for NYC.
