I'll start by saying I have a *lot* of anxiety when it comes to dental work due to extensive past work and dentists that didn't have great bedside manners. I went to see Dr. Forster for tooth pain and ended up needing a crown for a cracked molar. Dr. Forster's manner is gentle and welcoming, and he was very kind and talked me through everything thoroughly before any work commenced. There were a couple of moments during the process where I was obviously needing a break and he suggested such, and didn't make me feel like he was rushed or impatient at all. Dr Forster is a great dentist , very thorough and patient. Clearly explaining everything The only drawback is the inflexibility with the front office. We recently had a housefire and needed to meet with a contractor at the same time of as the dental appointment. Unfortunately, the office insisted on charging us a $50 cancellation fee for missing the appointment. There are some things in life which you have no control over such as when contractors will start to repair your house. Some flexibility would've been greatly appreciated! All that said, we will most likely return to Dr Forster as he is a good dentist. read more

I want to just start off by saying, if you're scared of the dentist. This is the place to go! If I could give 10 stars I would. I'm from Michigan but visiting family for a couple months. Of course I chip a composite I have on my front tooth a couple weeks before I go home. I googled online for a good reviewed dentist and found hillside at Bethany! They called me back after I left a message while they were closed and the receptionist was so nice and friendly! Didn't rush me at all either. Finally got in today and he was able to remove my composites quickly and painlessly which I've been wanting done for ages and the doctor made me feel so at ease. This is my first year using the Dental services at Hillside Dental. I took a few days to find who I thought might provide the best service possible. Of course using Yelp! and Google. So I had the consultation, two deep cleanings and a follow up. Dr Forster and his Staff are friendly and professional. Dr Forster is easy to communicate with. Dr. Forster is hands down, the best dentist I've had. I've seen him twice, first for patient establishment/routine clean and second, which was just yesterday, for root canal and 3 fillings! I've never had that many tooth work done in one day, but I had too, needless to say. I was experiencing severe pain later that night and called Dr. Forster at 10 pm . I wasn't expecting a call back since it was so late at night, but he did, within 10-15 minutes. He was patient with me and explained the possibilities of why I was experiencing the pain and also talked about treatment options. But I didn't want any Rx pain killers, so I gave the Tylenol I took a chance to work and it did!!!! Thankfully! I woke up with no pain and no discomfort at all. AND ... Dr. Forster was willing to meet me in his office on a Saturday to help me if my pain didn't go away. ON A SATURDAY! When their office is normally closed and when he should be with his family spending quality time, instead of meeting with a patient. And not only that, he texted me in the morning asking how I was doing. IT MADE ME FEEL CARED FOR AND VALUED. The effort and willingness to help meant EVERYTHING to me. I've been coming to this dental office now since 2013. Because I travel around the U.S. a lot, it was important for me to find a great dentist. I did quite a bit of online searching to find one who takes a holistic approach and is using the most modern techniques. It was such a relief to find Dr. Forster. He and his staff are awesome. Besides being exceptionally skilled and talented people, they are some of the kindest people you are likely to meet. I had some major work done up front, including a root canal, two crowns, and some fillings. Since then, it's just been the occasional checkup and cleaning. My 11 yo son was going to this dentist for a couple of years for cleaning. He never had a cavity nor a problem. However, Dr Foster has been forcing me to take x-rays of my son's teeth, despite the fact that I clearly told him that as parents we don't want to expose our son to harmful x-rays if it is not absolutely necessary. During our last visit last week, he mentioned that he had to be forceful with me and demanded an X-Ray or he would not see my son again. I felt harassed and agreed to not return. My first appointment with Dr Forester was to do impressions for an interim denture. He was gentle, kind and fun. Took all the time necessary to do his work meticulously. In one visit I was sure he would be my dentist for the rest of my life. Second visit was to check and adjust the interim denture after completing full upper extractions. My first impression was confirmed seeing him again. I actually afraid to be too profuse in stating my admiration, that he might get so filled up, I would have a hard time getting in to see him. Our insurance: Cigna Preferred Our Treatment Needs: Cleaning, Exam, filling and two caps Why we chose Dr. Forster and Hillside Dental - the selection process we used: After moving to the Portland Metro area, we have slowly been building on the list of go-to resources. We do a lot of research online and, after calling several, we had narrowed our choices down to two dentists; Hillside Dental and a dentist off of Cornell Road. Both were highly recommended so we decided to personally visit each office to see how we were treated. After all, it isn't just the dentist who is most important, it is also his support staff and the modern facilities. Shana, the office manager greeted us, talked to us at length and gave us a brief tour of the facilities, during which Dr. Forster greeted us as well. We then asked about the one bad review the office received on Angie's list. They were straight-forward about the review and without giving any specific details, answered our questions very satisfactorily. We both left feeling that Hillside Dental, et al, would be very hard to beat. Competitive Analysis: We then went to the dentist off of Cornell Road. We saw the awards in the small lobby, asked about charges and for a quick tour. We were denied a tour based on the bogus claim of HIPAA violations. NOTE: One would not violate HIPAA conventions based on peering into the office and treatment rooms to view equipment. We were unable to determine how modern the treatment rooms were, their cleanliness; what the staff looked like and a sense of how smoothly people worked with each other. All we got were a view of the awards and the reception area. We felt that this 'excuse' was how we would be treated if we were to go to this dentist and at some point, it would show up in the treatment or billing processes. We thanked the office manager and left. We both agreed that Hillside was indeed a winner based our selection criteria. The next day, I called to make appointments to see Dr. Forster. Background and Treatment: As a result of a problem with Bruxism (unintentional grinding), I tend to develop fissures and cracks in my teeth. My two lower molars had not been capped and they needed to be. Dr. Forster showed me where the problem was and thoroughly explained what needed to be done. I then set up a subsequent appointment. I was amazed at how proficient everyone was, how wonderful it is to be treated in an ultra-modern room with digital images of my mouth and my medical record at our fingertips. Dr. Forster and his assistants were in synch and efficient. We all conferred on the proper color choice for the caps and reached a consensus. Andrew has an artistic eye and really understands not only the medical aspects of his profession but also the esthetic side. He is a bit of a perfectionist with a real sense of humor - a great combination in my book. Because of the shots with this kind of treatment, there is usually moderate pain once the numbness wears off but all I needed was some Advil and an ice bag for 15 minutes and the pain was gone. In two weeks, my caps were ready. Of the eight molar caps I have had, these are best I have had to date. They are perfect and the adjustment Andrew had to do was minimal. This speaks to the lab's and the Dr.'s relationship and collaboration. Top notch. Bottom line: I would highly recommend Hillside Dental - top to bottom; front to back. read more

I hadn't been to the dentist for a while because I was living abroad nor had dental insurance upon my return. Needless to say, I was nervous about what might have to be done (deep cleaning, etc). I was very happy with this office. The women at the front were very welcoming and helpful. My hygienist, Phong, was also really great. My teeth needed a lot of scraping but she made sure I was comfortable and wasn't in too much pain. Andrew seems like a really good dentist. He definitely put me at ease even though I have a cavity. Andrew was my dentist at Gental Dental (not my favorite company, but that's where my parents took me as a kid) and really enjoyed his down to earth manner, relatability, and skill as a dentist. Also his sense of humor and lack of being condesending made him my absolute favorite dentist I've ever had. (I've had about 15 or so, in 3 states) When he started his own practice I jumped at the chance to follow him. The staff is great and work well with my ODS and Aflac insurances. There are cool ammenities like massaging chairs and televisions while the operations are going on. He also really helped me out with a special situation, saving me 90% on dental implants. I recommend Andrew to everyone I meet. I really hope you give him a try. read more

I am very nervous when it comes to dental work but this place is awesome! Danielle did my cleaning today and she was really great. She took time to explain what she was doing and why she was doing it. She was friendly, professional and really good at her job! Dr. Forster is awesome too! We have been coming here for about two years as a family. While there are some things that our family can appreciate about Dr Forester and his staff, we have been disappointed by miscommunications that occurred on their side (one office manager/secretary in particular) and the subsequent patient-blaming that happened afterward. There has also been a lack of careful consideration and treatment for our child's dental problems. We have tried to express our needs and ask for help, but it feels like they are eager to get us out of the door without providing some patient education, or effective treatment options etc. Dr forester can also be interpersonally awkward and even off-putting or demeaning at times, particularly with children. We don't feel comfortable and haven't felt our needs are taken seriously here. Update: 3 days after writing this review, my husband and I received letters from this office saying they would no longer treat our family. read more

This must be the office strategy because I never saw an employee smile, call me by my name, or initiate a conversation during my 2 hour visit. This was a very impersonal experience. I love this dentist! I have been to quite a few, some not so great. Hillside at Bethany is by far my favorite. They are honest and reasonable. My dental insurance is very limited, so I appreciate that. The only improvements I would like to see is to have tvs on the ceiling to watch during your appointment. My old dentist had that and I loved it! And the waiting area is a little worn out. read more

My boys have been coming here for a couple of years now and it's always been a wonderful experience! The front desk ladies are very nice and organized. They have a massage chair in the waiting room that you can use while waiting for the kiddos to get work done. They also provide coffee, tea, juices and snacks! I have been going to Hillside Dental for 2 years and enjoy my experience ever time. I have TMJ and suffer from anxiety and the staff is so good with creating a calming and relaxing environment. They offer massage chairs and blankets to make you more comfortable. Danielle does a fabulous job cleaning my teeth and her presence is calming. Dr, Forster is very laid back and soft spoken. I've been seeing Dr Forster for the last 5 years. Fairly happy with the twice annual cleanings and inspection. The biggest procedure I had here was to have a crown put in after a root canal. It is a dentist's office, so it's not totally painless. But Dr Forster is willing to work with you to get the right level of anaesthetic to help manage it. read more

After moving to Portland in 2017, I recently started receiving dental care with Dr. Forster at Hillside Dental. I had a some mild pain due to a new cavity and also had a crack in an old crown. I found Hillside Dental on Yelp and made an inquiry. Dr. Forster returned my phone call/inquiry very promptly (and on a weekend) and I got an appointment quickly the following week. His staff is very friendly and helpful. Dr. Forster did a great job and my pain is resolved. I have a new crown which fits perfectly and I had no difficulties at all. Dr. Forster is careful and thorough. He is sensitive to my needs, made sure I was comfortable and is also really nice and funny. His office plays great music! read more

From the front desk, through the dental technicians/hygienists to Dr. Forster, this is a very friendly, smooth chain of caring folks with personalities who really know their stuff. Most important, my pressing issues were dealt with quickly and satisfactorily. I'm back on a cycle of cleanings and check-ups and the maintenance between those appointments is really easy! The front desk turned me on to Dental Plans, allowing me to get needed work done at a discounted rate. The technicians gave me detailed info on how to floss and Dr. Forster has the most encyclopedic knowledge of music I've come across (too bad it's with my mouth open and full of dental tools). read more

I don't recommend this place. I had a bad experience. I wish that the dentist had felt bad about my tooth pain that I got with paying much money. I came here to change my very old silver crown to a white one. After the dentist here did, the tooth started to ache. I called the dentist but he said that it could happen because the nerve was very close to the crown. I believe that he had just told me that the nerve was very close to the crown but I don't believe that he gave me the information that I would have a risk to have pain. After several conversation, he asked me if I would need a translator, which pretty much offended me, because it sounded as if I had had problems to understand what he said. I am not American but I understand that people are saying. I had no issue to communicate with the previous wonderful dentist in WA, and he changed several silver crowns to white ones on the same day with no problem. I had to come back to Hillside Dental At Bethany to explain the issues but finally he just referred to a root canal dentist who he knows. Of course I don't go there. I don't trust neither of them. In the waiting room, I saw a paper asking and encouraging patients to write good reviews for them on yelp so I doubt if their yelp reviews are accurate or fair. read more

I switched to this dentist after moving to a new area. He refused to obtain my old records from the previous dentist, and it turned into a large cavity requiring a painful repair, then a root canal, extraction, and subsequently an implant. It cost me thousands of dollars even with insurance, not to mention severe pain for many months. The worst part is how I was treated afterwards. He refused to take responsibility and when I tried to share my experience, he threatened my first amendment rights through his lawyer, and actually had public posts removed. I was going to just let this experience slide, but couldn't sleep knowing that others are going to him and may experience similar problems. read more

Appreciated the staff's willingness to make time to do a thorough, careful fix rather than a quick patch so they could rush home to their own families. Okay, I almost never write a review, but this one is long overdue, particularly since I've been seeing Dr. Forster since his days at Gentle Dental. Today I just got a good reminder of what makes him -- and his staff -- so great. My permanent retainer came dislodged while I was flossing. (Plus, I've recently been getting some really ugly, annoying staining on my bottom teeth from being a black coffee fanatic.) Let me just say right now that the difference in the way my teeth looked and felt before I visited Dr. Forster earlier today to now -- it's unreal. He removed the piece of the retainer still cemented to the back of my tooth, filed down the remaining cement,which was driving me crazy, and my favorite part -- he made my teeth pearly white from a scary gray color. Oh! And I forgot to mention that he also did an impression for a guard that will keep my bottom teeth from getting crooked again. Big relief, because after braces for so many years as a teenager, the last thing I want is to throw it all away. Plus, he laughs, he jokes, and he puts you at ease. And his staff members always listen and have great advice themselves. Everyone is so friendly and efficient, and you never feel like just another patient. Oh, and the office itself? It's the nicest I've ever been in. Hi-tech equipment and great amenities. If you live in the Bethany area, or even if you have to drive a ways, this practice can't be beat. read more
